Titleist C16 – The Company’s First Movable Weight Driver

Remember that story from last week where we told you that a mainstream company  may be poised to enter the high-end market?

Well, that company is Titliest, and today, the first product matching the product family description we were given appeared on the USGA’s Conforming Club list. As you’ve probably heard, there’s a pretty big tournament this week, so it’s not a total surprise that something new would pop-up. It would be a bigger surprise if a Titleist staffer were to be bold-enough to make a driver change going into The Masters.

The new driver is called the C16, the C, we’re told, being short for Concept. And while we don’t expect full details to be released for at least another few weeks (maybe even months), the markings noted by the USGA do provide some hints as to what’s new on the technology front.

C16

Identification Markings:

SOLE: Active Recoil Channel, Titleist, C16, (loft), 811 Ti Body
TOE: Titleist
CROWN: (C16 alignment mark), ATI 425 THIN CROWN
HOSEL: (dot), (orientation indicators)
HEEL: SUREFIT CG
FACE:SP700 RADIAL SPEED FACE

ATI Thin Crown – Manufacturers love to thin crown for weight savings. We can assume Titliest will promote that as the foundation for how they were able to create this next part.

SUREFIT CG – Arguably from the It’s About Time department, the photos clearly show rearwardly-placed, movable weights. This would make the C16 the first adjustable CG driver form Titleist. The placement of the weights suggests yet another high-MOI offering from a company that consistently and quietly produces among the most forgiving in the game.

SP700 RADIAL SPEED FACE – For now we’ll assume that SP700 Titanium is being combined with a Radial Speed Face to help reduce weight while maintaining ball speed on off center hits.

The $1000 Driver?

IF (and we’re still very much at the IF stage here) this is the driver we heard about a couple of weeks ago, expect retail price to be substantially north of anything Titleist currently has on the shelf. Our source told us the C16 driver would be priced upwards of $1000.

We have an email into to Titleist asking for details. We’ll update you if we receive any new information.

For now, we’ll have to wait and see.

To all the knockers, its true you can drive from point A to point B in an old beat up Datsun 120Y, but it’s a lot more enjoyably to do it in the latest Ferrari.

PXG very quickly has become a force in the high end golf equipment market; evan taking some of Titleist staffers away from them. Why shouldn’nt one of the “most trusted and iconic” names in golf step in to compete? I got no problem with it. I also will not spend that kind of money on golf clubs. I am an “ebay, prior year” guy. Not saying I won’t demo it though.

Great looking driver and I’m sure if will deliver a top performance, but $1,000 is way too much money for the average golfer.

It’ll only be bought by the more wealthy. Unfortunately Titleist has taken it out of the hands of the every day golfer with that sort of price.

Sigh. In 1973, Johnny Miller shot 63 in the final round of the US Open at Oakmont with a persimmon driver. He hit 18 greens in regulation and took 29 putts. I always like to remind myself of this little factoid whenever a manufacturer releases *yet another* best shiny new club(s) that are guaranteed to help everyone’s game.

My wife buys shampoo and cream rinse and other expensive products all at $10/bottle each. I buy one bottle of $1.99 shampoo per month. When she runs out she uses mine and I can’t tell the difference. But she will run out and try something new as long as the bottle says “Ultra” or “New Advanced Formula”. All I know is we could be eating filet mignon instead of turkey burgers if she didn’t fall for all the hair hype. So until somebody puts a $1000 driver on an Iron Byron and shows me it hits better I ain’t buyin’ the hype.

Here’s your reality check – the standard driver in every OEM’s lineup is not they can offer. Golf clubs are designed to a price specification first. What’s the most we can do and still make money at $450-$500? Cost is the limiting factor.

Everyone in the industry can do better…for a price.

Different materials, different construction techniques, tighter tolerances.

There are a handful of things that could actually lead to better performance, but implementing any single one of them would drive prices above what the consumer will be in any real numbers. – TC

I work for a manufacture (not golf) and sure you can add all the features you want to a product but it does come down to price. Materials, engineering, and methods of Manufacturing. If you are not creating a product with a price in mind, that is just bad business.

If Titleist were to produce the C16 with the same Qty as the 915 models they could probably get the cost down to the $750-$800 range which the general public would not fork out for a driver. In order for this then to generate a profit for Titleist they have to produce less Qty, there for cost go up as engineering cost now have to be divided by a smaller number and manufacturing runs are smaller also driving the cost up of each item. This driver is for the 1% that don’t mind forking out the cash, not the sensible weekend warrior.

With all due respect, all PXG have shown is that by throwing a bunch of money at it they can make some very expensive clubs and get a few tour pros to play them. They haven’t proven they can sustain growth or even turn a profit yet.

Theirs is a niche market for people that don’t mind overpaying to be different, much like many of the boutique brands that have come before them like Scratch, Honma, XXIO, Fourteen, TourStage, Epon, Miura, Harry Taylor, Hopkins, Air Force One, Bettinardi, and many others.

The parallel to PXG came from our original source on this (roughly 2 weeks ago, I think), who told us that the company “wants to compete directly with PXG”. It makes sense…margins are higher, it’s an opportunity to Titleist to push boundaries in a way their traditional audience may not appreciate. Also worth mention, despite all the groaning about alienating golfers, the premium market is growing. XXIO has kept Cleveland floating for the better part of the last 2 seasons, and from what fitters and other sources outside the company are telling us, PXG is obliterating initial projections. -TC

I personally understand and agree completely (as usual) with Mygolfspy.. CURRENTLY in the domestic market, the gold PXG irons are the talk of the super ridiculously high end market. At 200,000 a set, I’d say that they’re eating the JDM high end market’s lunch, and drinking it’s juice box.
I’d also like to point out that the writer for Mygolfspy probably knows more than you about what is in, or has been on the market in the past. The reference to PXG is current considering they just wrote about those new irons last week. Also considering they are writing to those who follow their site, the probably assume that you’d get the reference and not “PLUG” JDM for arguments sake. Just sit back and enjoy the article or simply, don’t! No reason to try to debate the writer because he’s not a JDM fanboy like some of the above individuals.. :)

      Reply

      Jordan L. Hill

My point isn’t the irons themselves, but the use as a reference when talking about the new “High End” Titleist driver for the domestic market.. The writer only mentioned the company and the irons as a small entertaining part of his article. Then the JDM fanboys jump in and get worked up and making claims that Mygolfspy is name dropping PXG.
I read mygolfspy because it’s entertaining, informative, and completely independent. So when I see trolls get on here and give it’s writers a hard time and making accusations that their plugging companies, I get annoyed. I’m sure I’m not alone.
If you don’t like it, don’t read it. I guess the days where if you didn’t have something nice to say, then don’t say anything, are gone in the golf world as well..lol
