Tell Us What You Think – Titleist Brand Survey

Brands are not just what they say they are. Brands are what consumers say they are. – Ari Jacoby, CEO Solve Media

Your Opinion Matters

We know that golf companies have some pretty lofty ideas about themselves. And while we also know that some of you have some pretty interesting (that’s a nice way of saying insane) ideas about some of the golf companies, it’s absolutely clear to us that very often there’s a strong disconnect between how brands view themselves, and how you, the consumer, view those same brands.

With that in mind, we think it’s going to prove exceptionally interesting to learn exactly how our readers perceive the biggest names in golf, how you think each brand compares to the competition, and because this is the world we live in, how you think each brand is doing doing with Social Media.

Once we’ve gathered the data, we’re going to share some of the more compelling results with you, and with any golf company who stops by to read.

While there will be more surveys to come, we’ve decided to start with Titleist. Why Titleist? No particular reason…seriously. Why not Titleist?

You have to start somewhere, right?

There’s Something In it For You. . . One Of You, Anyway

mgs-stitch

One survey taker (you have to complete the survey) will be randomly selected to receive a MyGolfSpy Prize Package containing, among other things, a really cool MyGolfSpy Headcover from Stitch Golf (pictured above).

The survey is only 21 (short) questions long, and the first handful is all about you. That’s not so bad right?

As I said, we’re going to be publishing the results of these surveys. Be sure to check back soon to find out what other MyGolfSpy readers truly think about the biggest names in golf.

I have always liked the Titleist ball. I have strayed twice in over 40 years playing golf. Switched to the Maxfli HT 100 in the balata days. recently have switched to the Srixon Z star but have had duralibility problems due to new irons. Have switched back to the Pro V. I have played Vokey wedges for years up until recently when I switched to Infiniti custom irons. Titleist blades never hit good for me but that is just me does not have anything to do with quality of their product. I did have one Titleist driver a 979vjs it was one of the straightest drivers I ever owned but did not give me good distance. Since then I have went mostly the custom component route ie; wishon and now Hathaway. In reality If I had not found the wedges I have now I would still be hitting Vokeys. Now Scotty putters that is another deal and what I am fixing to say is gonna piss some folks off sorry A Scotty for the most part is just a high price Ping copy. even though I never liked their equipment as a whole I think they make the best ball in golf

Good survey. Great golf balls. Too expensive. I’m becoming a fan of Wilson balls. I agree with Joel. The clubs have to fit you or you have to be lucky. Pros play clubs for sponsorship money.. Notice how many hang onto a favorite 3 wood or putter after they change their logos.

In my bag I use Vokey wedges I find the feel and spin is extremely good. I would recommend the wedges to any serious golfer and also they help bunker play too , with the feel they give off.
Prov 1x is the ball I use . I choose this as it has great feel around the green and with the driver it comes off the face great. Short game is defo better with this heavier ball. Thanks Titleist.

I am constantly surprised at how little most golfers know about the equipment they use. How it is made, who makes it (not assemble, but manufacture), what specs are meaningful, loft and lie understanding, cast vs forged and their qualities, etc. I have played the game for 70 years and still play 250+ rounds a year, but find that most players at both public access and private courses have little knowledge of what, why they play certain clubs, other than ” It got great reviews in XXXXXXXXX magazine” or more frequently “it was on sale at GOLF STORE XYZ” and the guy said it was good for my game. “No, he never saw me play or swing. I told him about how I score” No wonder so few players play well. I am still a 6.5 index……My clubs are fit for me by a professional fitter.

Personally I have always felt that Titleist was made for the serious and traditional golfer. I don’t even know how this all came to be? Maybe it was just ingrained in my memory as a child watching golf on TV or that Titleist script was everywhere back in the 80’s 90’s when I first started getting interested in golf. If you were to watch golf in the 80’s 90’s you would see all these players playing Titleist golf balls wearing Titleist hats, and almost every player wore FJ classics. Titleist was almost like a level of accomplishment. If you were playing Titleist equipment and wearing their garb it meant you were serious about the game of golf and it’s tradition. To me Titleist was all things golf. I can remember I started out playing HB Powerbilt Fuzzy Zoeller woods and irons from K-Mart. Obviously that meant I was a weekend hack and and knew nothing about the game, but if I had a full set of Titleist in the bag it was perceived right or wrong that I knew something about the game. Titleist was something along the lines of Ben Hogan, there was that mystique about Ben the man and Titleist the golf company. At least that’s how I felt and still feel to this day, that Titleist represents tradition and quality although I only play a few of their clubs i still feel they make equipment geared towards the better player. Now over the recent years Titleist has changed a bit bringing game improvement irons into the line up and try to appeal to a wider golf audience. Also you have to remember that most of my opinions of Titleist were formed long before there were computers and long before this thing like the internet. Now present day I still feel Titleist makes some great equipment, but now I also know about custom fitting and not one brand fits all.

Interesting survey and very interesting comments afterwards. If you actually read the text prior to the survey it does mention that the purpose of the survey is to judge brand perception – ie how we (golfnerds) view the OEM’s even if we don’t use their stuff.
Personally – Titleist is a ball, shoe and glove company that sells clubs as a way of reinforcing their desired image of a serious, traditional but also technologically able company who also realise the importance of making beautiful things (ie people will pay more for something that is visually appealing). Lately however the retail industry (together with improved products from competitors) is forcing an adjustment in pricing (at least in Europe)

So I am still confused as to how our opinion “matters”… is this survey solicited by Titleist, are the results going to them? I don’t think our opinion matters here in a forum like this.

And where was the question about how expensive ProV1’s are??? Titleist charges WAY too much for golf balls – doesn’t matter if they’re the best or not. That’s not helping the game’s image as being catered to rich snobs. Their entire golf ball line is more expensive than the competition. I always buy used balls for this reason.

      1. No, this survey was NOT solicited by Titleist

      2. No, the results are NOT going to them

      3. This is how your opinion matters to us:

Almost all surveys ARE solicited by companies for their own internal knowledge. Our surveys are not. These are for you guys. What I mean by that is already we are starting to see some interesting information and data coming from this first of many surveys. And once we publish some of this and put the story around the numbers in relevant future articles, I think you will then start to see why YOUR opinion matters.

One of my main purposes behind MyGolfSpy is to educate where others in the industry are not willing. They generally lack this willingness because there is a lack of monetary incentive for those types of content for them. I put the consumer first and the company last which is the opposite approach. And in my opinion information and knowledge is power for the consumer. And we plan to give you that when no one else is.

To me Titleist clubs are for better players. (Single handicappers and lower.) I would love to own Titleist clubs but I do not believe they are engineered for those of us who need “forgiveness” out of our sticks. If they are engineered to be forgiving then Titleist does a poor job of advertising that aspect. Other major brands do a much better job of pushing the forgiveness factor. Convince me they are as forgiving as others on the market and I promise my next purchase will be Titleist. I have always had great respect and admiration for Titleist products – as far back as the mid 1960’s I have coveted those clubs. Yes I want Titleist equipment, I can afford them, I just worry my 10 handicap would creep up without the forgiveness factor that is built into other major brands.

since this was a survey on tit-lest ill stick to that maker and not talk about other makers untill we come to that survey. with that being said, ive hit some wedges by tit-lest but ill stick to what i have now. also I have used said companies balls before but I now use different balls as I like the feel of balls I now use over the tit-lest balls.I believe that the prices on their balls is higher then other balls and I just cant justify spending that kind of money on a ball I dont like the feel of when i hit or putt with it.I know other balls can cost just as much but if you hit other balls and compare you can find a good ball at a lesser price and just as good in my opinion. It all depends on what you like as a player. and Im not a geat golfer i carry a 18 handicap but I love to play and play as much as I can.I play maybe 36 sometimes 54 holes a week. Yes I know you play that much and still suck. hey I just love the game and its that 1 shot that makes you keep coming back.oh and my 4 some I play with are not slow. if no one holds us up we can play a round in less then 4 hours. so I might suck but I play golf ready.

I do not think that the big names really cater for the avarage golfer (16-24 hc). Before an avarage golfer gets use to his clubs the manufacturer introduces (according to them) a wonderful improvement and so the dog starts chasing its tail. Retailers are smiling because golf equipment has become a huge fashion statement. I also believe that huge profits are made at the expense of golfers. Almost all the equipment is manufactured in China so why do we have all these arguments about the quality? Go out there and find the equipment that works the best for you and enjoy this wonderful game.

IMHO, the survey did not do justice for the brand, nor did the design of the survey will help the brand. It is a very poor job and I hope the brand didn’t pay for such low level task.

Survey is another way to market the products, this survey did not do that.

Survey should seek what the customer or the surveyer are looking for, this did not do that.

Survey questions are narrow, did not address the market position, competition and weakness thoroughly enough to be effective.

I love Titleist Balls, and the Vokey Wedges. I’ve hit the best Titleist balls most of my life and have never suffered for it unless I lost one. The rest of the Titleist clubs have never fit my game and my Handicap has ranged from a 2 to a 15, currently 8 for a 63 year old. Titleist doesn’t care about high handicap, and especially Senior Golfers club wise.

More than 15 years ago I put together some knock off Clubs for myself and friends, back then the tolerances between the KO’s and Factory clubs were huge. You couldn’t always tell about things like rebound effect, but you could weigh heads, check thickness of irons, and of course loft and lie. My experience was that Mizuno was by far the most reliable Manufacturer, second back then would have been Callaway and Cobra.

I have friends that carry the Master Club Builder badge of honor and was curious about how close clubs were today, who was the most consistent, etc. Two were consulted and they live in different states, both said the same thing, the majority of Knock offs and the real counterfeits still are all over the place in terms of conforming to any kind of standards. Both have seen Counterfeits but deny selling them, and I believe them. Today they told me that the best Manufacturers in terms of producing near identical club consistently were, Mizuno (no surprise), Callaway ( 2013 only, not previous years) and Bridgestone. Both said that except for the Vokey Wedges they had not handled enough Titleist clubs to have a handle on them. They both opined which company was the loosest in tolerances, I’ll check with my attorney before I publish that under my name.

Hey, yet another thing designed by someone who, evidently, will never have to use it. What brain surgeon designer thought that white would “really pop” — white???!!! Have you ever looked at the color of the water coming off those grips as you wash them? It’s the color those head covers will be after 3 rounds. C’mon, please give us a headcover survey. I am inclined to think, by virtue of the questions limited alternative answers, that this survey was, if not put up by Titleist, it was at least Titleist bias.

Perhaps there would be room for personal comment about a brand.

e.g. Titleist golf balls are excellent but not sufficiently better to justify the price differential.

      100% incorrect.

Titleist, not only did not pay for this survey the questions were completely thought up and devised by Tony and myself. If you have read the other comments you will see what our purpose is behind doing these surveys.

And like we have stated numerous times before, WE DO NOT ACCEPT AD DOLLARS OR ANY COMPENSATION FROM ANY LARGE OEM (INCLUDING TITLEIST). So, if we were to sell out don;t you think we would have done it for more than a survey ;)

This is our first one, and I am sure the questions can and will be improved. That being said if we were to include everything we could (the kitchen sink) there would be too many questions and no one would take the surveys. We appreciate the feedback though, honestly. And like I stated we are always looking to improve things.

I thought the survey was excellent, especially for the first try. I would add a section about “differentiating” products, drivers or wedges or irons, OVER several years, and WITHIN a new model year. I can never remember if the drivers that end in 2 are more or less forgiving than the drivers that end in 3, etc. Same for the irons. At least the putters have names that stick with you! But I love to tinker with three year old technology after all the playing reviews, like GOLFSPY’s, are in! I found a set of Cobra FP irons at the thrift shop for $15 with Nippon shafts…and they were a valid HOTLIST selection years ago. They are great irons! Will try Ping 2013s in a few years! Love to do more surveys!

I’ve always included them in comparison with other clubs when looking for new ones but, they have never come out with a true GI iron or driver IMHO and I have never been comfortable with them. Titleist makes excellent quality products and has for years but is a bit behind in the hype department .Taylormade makes average to poor quality golf equipment but hypes the hell out of it and therefore Joe Average thinks their stuff is wonderful. We are in a golf market that has few really knowledgable buyers, so the shit with the biggest ribbon wrapped around it sells the best.

I have played golf for over 40 years and average over 80 to 120 RDS a year. I also play all over the USA and in several countries. During this time, I can not recall playing with more than a few people who played titlest clubs. The only product of titleist that was played most was their overpriced pro v. It is sad to see people playing this over hyped and priced product harming the performance in their game. Overpricing in golf in both equipment/balls. and green fees is the main reason the game is losing players.
The other side of the coin is that most of the equipment is made overseas with cheap labor and then sold at inflated prices. For this reason I have stopped buying new equipment and even buy mint recycled balls. All the courses in our area are struggling to attract players and many courses may close in the near
future even though we are pulling slowly out of the recession. I think golf spy should be doing surveys onwhat is wrong in golf and what companies/courses are delivering the best values. Sending surveys out on companies that over hype and price their products does seem to be not focused on golfs future.

Having been in every aspect of the game for 60+ years and currently dabbling in teaching and repairs Ttileist is a good, solid performer year in and year out. When they bought Golfcraft out in the early 60s Golfers were looking forward to playing the clubs. The ball was recognized as the best and we all though the clubs would be great, and they were.

They are solid, not many problems like others with heads coming off and so on. They are just a solid, steady, quiet company without a lot of fanfare and not gimicky like others. Serious and traditional good product.

If golfers as a group really feel something equal or comparable, that will be reflected in the overall results.

The reality is that very few things are truly average (even when it comes to our opinions). The average is made up of things above or below it, but seldom is anything truly average.

Like I said, if average is what the larger group believes, it will be reflected in the numbers, but giving everyone the out of picking average or same won’t really tell us much.

      Kenny B

I am only speaking for myself, but I wasn’t considering “average”. When I took the survey, some choices were “better than” or “worse than” (or something similar). Consider the example of the ProV1; when I compare the ProV1 to some brand’s comparable balls, there may be some differences but if it basically performs the same, then how do I rate it better or worse? I would certainly not rate the ProV1 average; it would be rated very high (along with the other “comparable” balls).

The results should be very interesting, and I hope the surveys continue. Thanks!

No this was not initiated by Titleist. This is something we want to do more of in the future, to better educate not only us but also our readers with the data these types of surveys provide.

Other data collection surveys are typically done for the sole purpose of the collector. We think it will be interesting to publish this data for all of you to see the results. Consumers are almost always kept out of the loop with this type of information. We want to try and change that.

That is truly appreciated. We are asked or at least I’m asked to do any number of surveys on a variety of topics related to golf and never receive the survey results.

I hope this means you’ll be doing a similar survey for the other OEMs.

Yes, the plan is to do the other OEM’s and a few other interesting surveys as well.

Everybody whose logo is on that banner at the top is on our list. I can’t promise we’ll share every last bit of data, but we’re definitely going to highlight the interesting and relevant stuff (and show you some graphs and charts) in a future post.

The response so far has exceeded my personal expectations, so if that continues we’ll definitely keep it up.

Same here, in IE or Chrome, the survey section is blank.

      I don’t care what surveys I take.
I will not buy any clubs from the major OEM’s anyway.
I find that the specs of the clubs have too big of a tolerance for my liking

Thanks for the irrelevant opinion. If you don’t care don’t comment on it.

What I found lacking in the survey was the option to check off ‘average’ for several of the questions. Only ‘slightly superior’ or ‘slightly inferior’ were given as middle ground. Frankly I find that it is more about the type of ball that is important and not who makes it. Price could have been a larger focus of the survey too. Titleist along with several other big names are just too expensive. This applies to their balls and equiptment. On another note I know of at least one PGA player who sticks with Titleist only because of his indorsement contract. That’s why I think that players like Rocko Meidiate are wise to not be obligated to any one sponser.

I can’t even get the NEXT button to work. All the questions up to then were about Title is. Great product but dramatically over priced. Especially their balls.
