Swing Over 100 MPH? Here are your Top 5 Drivers!

We know that not everybody, not even a majority of golfers, can generate over 100 MPH of clubhead speed, but there are plenty of you who can. It stands to reason that the higher swing speed guy (and often a lower handicap guy) might require something different from a lower, or even average swing speed guy when it comes to his driver.

That could mean lower spin. It could mean a more compact shape. And while lower swing speed guys might favor ultralite models to help raise clubhead speed, we’ve found that bigger hitters often get better numbers with shafts in the 75 gram range. Our higher swing speed players put 23 drivers to the test, and these 5 were the top performers.

hss-separate-1

Adjustability, ball speed, and distance, the TaylorMade SLDR brings it all to the table. Pound for pound, the SLDR was the longest driver we tested this year. Whether you choose the standard 460 model, the 430, or the new SLDR S, you’re going to hit the ball a long way. Even with your above-average swing speed, don’t be afraid to try the 12° model.

hss-separate-2

It’s the Tour Edge Exotics XCG7 Beta, not the SLDR that produced the lowest spinning drives for higher swing speed players. Plenty well-known for their fairway woods, you should be paying attention to this Tour Edge driver as well. The XCG7 is unquestionably the best driver Tour Edge has ever produced. If it’s not on your demo list, it needs to be.

hss-separate-3

Performance evolved. That’s how we’d label the PING i25. The i20 had a solid run as the one of the top performing drivers we’ve ever tested. 2 years later we find ourselves smitten with the i25.  The racing stripe alignment system is cool, but what we really like is that the i25 offers more forgiveness than you’d expect from a distance-favoring driver.

hss-separate-4

You know the G25 is an outstanding option for slower swing speed players, but it turns out, it’s one hell of a driver for faster players as well. As they were for our lower swing speed guy, accuracy numbers are stellar, and the forgiveness of the G25 cannot be questioned. If playing from the short grass is your goal, the G25 will help put even the longest of hitters there more often.

hss-separate-5

Do you love distance (and the color orange)? Sinister (creator of the Agent Orange driver) isn’t exactly a household name, but their driver showed that it can hammer the ball down the fairway with the best of them. For those not interested in lofting up, worth a mention is that the Agent Orange is the only driver on this list available in 5° and 6°.

The Ping is nice but, my shaft broke three times at the hozel. All on center of the face hits. Xstiff stock shaft.

Well, I invented the only training aid Mr. Harvey Penick ever endorsed in wonderful life. The Mr. for this Master golf teacher is well deserved. His gift was simplifying the very complex game of golf. He taught that the set up is 80% of the shot with his best known phrase Take Dead Aim.
The Magic move of golf, and many other things. He wanted everyone to enjoy the game of golf.
He taught all the legends but would never tell you that. A humble good man. Truth as he saw it.

Been building and studying for 50 years.
So, I’m going to give you the straight facts bout drivers. All the heads are about the same. Very forgiving and built for high handicap players. They all give you the best possible distance on miss hits. The same applies on sweet spot center hits. Fact, swing speed at impact is the determining factor for possible distance. Then, we get into aerodynamics of the flight. That is determined by trail and error nothing else. The right shaft is the truth. Being able to determine what variation works best for your swing characteristics is the only way to buy a game.

How about providing a table with the specifications for each driver (slower swing speed clubs too). Shaft: Model and Stiffness, Length, Loft, Lie. That way it’s known what was tested more than just the driver model itself. Listed elsewhere perhaps?

Almost none of these top driver selections match your 5/16/2014 article for the top 5 fairway wood selections. Why ? What happened to the Callaway Big Bertha driver since it was ranked #2 for distance and accuracy ? What happened to the Ping Rapture, it was ranked #1 for distance and accuracy ? Hard to believe golfers are now just mixing and matching sets of drivers and fairway woods ! Almost certain to screw up your game with different shafts, grips, etc. and void any performance gains from an individual club itself. Best to test clubs as a set.

Sorry Rob, have to disagree. When I went to the launch monitor to try out clubs, I thought the same thing you did. At the time, I was hitting the Rocketballz the best so naturally I wanted to try the 3 wood and although I was hitting it well, the Callaway Razr x black fairway would was at least 20 yards farther and straighter. I then tried the hybrids, and of all the ones I tried, the Adams A12 os hybrid was the most consistent of the bunch. Don’t have to be loyal to 1 brand .Try them all. The last thing I expected was having an Adams or Callaway club in my bag and they are both still there

as long as the shafts have similar frequencies and the grips/ heads are assembled to the same swingweight, you won’t screw up your game. My set has 5 different manufacturers, and my irons have 3 different clubhead types but they all match perfectly with one another to give me a solid 3 handicap.

Nice comparisons… I have the SLDR, it’s long but I can’t hit the damn thing sraight. Thinking of getting another 913 D2 for backup because it seemed to really cut down on my wayward drives.

@kygolfer Don’t blame the SLDR, get a properly fitted shaft and you will more than likely keep the ball in play, more often. Personally, I like the SLDR, I hit it longer and straighter than my R-11S and the spin is less as well. It rolls out farther than any driver I’ve owned.

Good reasoning, the name of the game is shaft. A shaft that will increase your swing speed with giving you more center face hits. One that happens then you go to the numbers. Launch angle, spin , etc.

The Taylor Made slider with a 75 gram shaft swing weight would be E5 or more. Making it hard to perform with the club. The only golfers who have lighter than 20 gram slider weights are tour players. The heavy head with the 20 gram slider weight up front put the ball low. TM has.basically force golfers to hit the 57 grams shaft and accept low ball flight.

Nice reviews, but why are you repeating your driver reviews from February? I look forward to reading insightful reviews and commentary on new clubs, etc. not rehashing old articles. Besides why review drivers more than half way through the year when most of them are selling at discount prices? Odd review timing.

The interesting thing to me is the distance differences between first and last. Five yards, That’s it. Five yards. This to me emphasizes the fact that you could chose any one of these (and probably others too) and not be any better or worse off. Accuracy is in the same boat too.

Guess it really highlights how far clubs have come. Technology has been able to put us all close together in equipment potential.

Given such results, which technology really benefits everybody most? Is it front weighting, back weighting, side weighting or none of the above? One could legitimately argue that it really doesn’t matter much.

      Five Yards.
      Wow.

MSG (SOP) one article per day (no matter how old or redundant). Focus on repetition, and keep readers on the edge of their seats with the articles titled “wait till tomorrow”. When all that is said and done, reply to the comments we don’t agree with ( even though it may double our work load)

Excellent review. Bought the SLDR S because of this exact review. Don’t get me wrong, I tried them out and the Ping G25 was a close second. When will we see a wedge and or iron competition? I’m in the wedge market right now!!
