The biggest problem with facebook vis a vis site is that when you are on facebook and then have to sign on to mygolfspy, you are not always brought back to the mygolfspy page you were on via facebook and have to try to navigate back to where you were. Not always that easy.
Lots of time I have been dumped back onto the mygolfspy homepage and have just given up on either the contest or the issue at hand, especially when using a smartphone…

Anthony, the rules have been posted since day one…No surprises…..Though I have an FB account, I barely have ever used it & know even less about it, though the one thing that I deduced, long before this contest was even an idea, is that FB is one huge popularity contest….

So come on…NOW you see it’s “just a popularity contest”….”It’s really not fair?”……”It will come down to who has the most friends”….No sh*t Sherlock…..Let me fill ya in on a little….Not really, cuz anyone with an IQ north of 100 could deduce this, however this who contest is to get MGS exposure…To bring in new readers, members and ultimately more $$…

And to reward you for assisting them, they are giving you the opportunity to win just over $10,000 in prizes, with over 5K of it for you if you win….You just noticed that it was a popularity contest?…There’s also another avenue to the prizes, though I read your entry & between you & I, it’s nothing special, definitely not top 5….

Anthony, you take yourself and your entry a wee bit too seriously…Instead of moaning and whining, how about submitting another entry….And regarding the popularity contest?…Don’t feel so bad, when this contest started, I had four frickin friends…Now I got a reason to bitch and it’s got nothing to do with MGS or this contest….

Grow up & compete like a man and instead of crying and moaning, go find some more friends….lol…..

I entered th contest on Facebook. I took it seriously with ideas that I think would make your site better. I thought things out and took the time to write it and now that it is on Facebook, and now I see it is just a popularity contest. That’s not really fair. I opened the account back up for this contest and now it will come down to has the most “friends”. Not at all fair and definitely not the contest I though it would be. That’s what really SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a good amount of votes right now but I noticed I forgot to put my Name on the entry. Will my entry not count. I was in such a rush to get entered i just put my email and comment and hit publish.

I love the contest everyone should stop complaining. The only thing that is a problem is it is very cumbersome to vote especially from a phone. But I am showing everyone how to do it so I hope since it takes a little work to vote some people will be turned away and i can get 1st or 2nd. This is a contest I feel I can actually win instead of just a random drawing. Will the second round of voting be different.

Quick question. If you go over 100 by a bit, can you correct it and repost in the comment section with the right number and have that count as the entry? Or do you need to have the whole thing deleted and start over?

I was over on two ideas by 5-15 words or so and re-wrote it to get under 100 words in the comments. Will that be OK?

On a serious note you know what I find quite funny (semi-serious) is that technology has allowed us to become more interconnected and from that we can share information with everyone….though YOU can control the amount you wish to share. If the MGS guys asked you to write a small essay detailing why you should be a worthy winner and send it off to an address in one of their many tax havens you would be livid! Wondering which century they were in. Writing on rocks is the earliest form of facebook…….SHARING INFORMATION! I learnt last night that my wifes cousin was hit by a car whilst cycling, I learnt that a pupil I used to teach now owns a house in Sydney-Australia, I saw a beautiuful image of Mars from the curiosity rover, and I posted an amazing picture of my three year old daughter in her new school uniform for family to see…..all on facebook!
Then we have the sheer audacity and cheek of people to get in touch (via a blog…much like facebook) and complain after the guys have slogged their arses off to provide its readers with a class competition……maybe MGS should just ‘dislike’ these cretinous individuals, who display no manners, in the future!

Thanks for the great prizes. I refuse to use facebook but not mad about the criteria. Honestly its a part of many contests these days for all companies

My only suggestion for future contests would be to let us know up front if facebook or other social media Otherwise we get excited about the prizes and then letdown bc we dont want to participate due to the entry requirements

I’m sure if you let everyone know up front less people would complain less

I’ve learned over the last year that almost all contests use social media so i never get too excited

Thank you for the opportunity and for all the hard work you guys put into this site

Some of the reactions to this contest make for interesting reading! My only critic of this would be the voting system which seems a bit arbitrary. You vote for your friends, and not for the post you think has the best ideas. Its also likely that non-golfers (friends and family) will be the deciding votes, which again is not quite right. The extra level with staff votes helps- but if the the goal is really to find the most popular/best IDEA and not just the person with the most FB friends, then the votes will be mostly meaningless.

But its a good attempt! And there will be LOTS of good ideas from it. Just make sure you go through all the entries – whether they have votes or not- so those hidden gems are not missed.

FB just for kids? Is that why the World Bank, the IMF, the United Nations, Chase Manhattan, the EU, the OSCE, SHELL, EXXON, BP, Callaway Golf, Cleveland Golf, TM Golf, Nike Golf, Bridgestone Golf, Adams Golf, Tititlest, Ford, GM, GE, and just about every other global organization and industry have pages on FB? To reach the kids and find dates? Who knew?!

Hey listen, MGS is putting up a contest where you can win thousands of dollars in prizes and people are pissed about facebook/alienation? I’m sorry but not everyone can win and not everyone is part of everything. That’s life. It seems to me the more someone has to add creativity to a contest, the more they find some reason to complain. It never fails.

I completely agree. I could have overlooked it, but last time I checked this contest was FREE. Do you go to a fine dining restaurant and then complain to the general manager about the price of the entrees? Do you go to a bar and then complain to the bartender about the cost of the drinks? I hope not. If you don’t like the prices of the entrees/drinks you have the option to get up from your table and leave the establishment. FB is a part of the contest, so deal with it. I personally deactivated my FB account and will not enter the contest, but it doesn’t mean that I’m gonna cry like a little baby. I’ve got more important things to worry about than me not having a chance at winning a contest because I don’t have a FB account. MGS, I enjoy your site and appreciate your insight and reviews. Keep up the good work. I won’t be entering the contest, but I’ll be back here everyday to catch the latest reviews and new releases.

I’m disappointed with the FB condition but would not have entered any way as my bag is set. Beside, if any thing I won was white I would give it away.
I will continue to enjoy the website and reviews, and look forward to the future when not required to join a overpriced IPO. Because that is what we received over the past 12 months in donations….$2,000. You guys including yourself have no clue what goes on behind the scenes here and if you did you would never complain. Once again you tell me who do you know that would turn down over $250,000 in income to try and keep this place the way it has always been. Facebook’s deal is that contests can’t be hosted on their servers. You have to go through a 3rd party. Splitting hairs when you think about, the entire thing is 100% Facebook integrated, but technically speaking, is hosted off the Facebook network.

We’re 100% by the rules, but again…it’s just weird.

I helped a little with a major health admin company’s FB page and the small print on FB said they couldn’t hold a contest. The company’s lawyers immediately canned it specifically because of FB’s fine print regarding contests.

BUT I see FB contests all the time so you’re probably fine.

Again, great contest, great prizes and great execution. I understand that people think it is a popularity contest, but that only comprises 1/2 of the entrants… For those complaining about having poor writing skills, sit down for a while and think long and hard before you enter. Quality does not come naturally for some, but it will come with time to others.

Seems most of the facebook complainers are either conspiracy theorists or lazy and would rather just be handed the prize rather than have to put effort into winning it. I feel bad about this, because you guys obviously put a lot of time and effort into organizing the contest. Yup just like government programs (which voted itself the authority to invade all aspects of your fb without you being aware and incriminate you on its context thereof) when you hold your hand out for free stuff you don’t get to complain. So just don’t enter the contest. Everyone else that uses fb just go ahead and enter the contest and return to using fb for what its really used for by all the “adults” on here…looking at pictures of young girls you shouldn’t be.

Maybe you need to pull your head out of your own ass. The generalization that all “adults” use social media to look at young girls is ridicules. Do you have sick S.O.B. out their that do sure that’s what the privacy settings are for in locking down your profile from public view, don’t put a profile picture of yourself on their and don’t accept people as friends that you don’t know, really damn simple if you ask me to avoid that kind of behavior from a users stand point.

As long as the user makes their profile friends only, doesn’t post a profile picture or header image of themselves that are public and doesn’t accept anyone as a friend that they don’t actually know in real life they have less sensitive information into FB then you do on any site which you have made a financial transaction of any kind. Besides, most of your information is already public record in the first place that I can go down to the local library / archives and find out about it has been that way for YEARS now.

If you are so against social media in general, what are you doing using the platform that supports the websites in the first place. People when the internet first came out thought it was the devil and was going to corrupt today’s youth. No it helped provide more knowledge to today’s youth. Some now think the new devil is social media, that is just people that don’t understand it and don’t take the time to understand it. When people don’t know anything about an issue / topic they get defensive and jump to conclusions, The better way of approach is education on the issue / topic and then come to a informed conclusion.

Like I said once before, I work as a web applications developer. The company I work for their product targets High School students and College Students. One extremely effective way to connect with these young “adults” and teenagers is using social media. They want blogs, social media streamed into the website, links to the social media pages. If you like it or not social media is not going anywhere it is mainstream now, sort of like the internet in general.

I just suggest that if you are that paranoid about your personal information don’t have a computer and don’t use the internet at all. It is that simple, change with the times and what the current trend is or get left behind in the dust with the third world countries.

People complaining about Facebook need to understand they are trying to get something for free and understand the man power and effort that has already gone in to this project. If you don’t like Facebook, please complain on Facebook. What if GolfSpy allowed you to enter by posting on the blog, and they accidentally miss your post? What if you post multiple times as is allowed and MyGolfSpy misses those posts? Are you going to still complain and say it is not fair since they missed your post? Think about the efforts these guys are putting in to put this together, and be thankful. And if you claim to be a grown-up not using Facebook, then please GROW UP!

I think any comments about social media in terms of “grown ups” not using it are completely misinformed or you are just living under a rock. I happen to be an adult and use social media as a way of communication. My grandparents that are 60-70s use social media, are you really going to sit here and tell me they are not “grown ups”? Only time I might use the term “grown ups” is when talking to a child, it sounds like you are a child talking to other adults or attempting to insult someone’s intelligence.

Social media has become the primary way for the younger generation to communicate. Universities have started to lean to social media heavily as a way to promote events and get information out to their students and potential students. It is what they are resigned to doing because it is the current trend there is not an option to refuse using it meaning the employees of the university better have a good handle on what it’s all about.

Social media offers different levels of privacy, Facebook especially will allow you to lock the profile to friends only and you can fine tune even what your friends see by adding people to a group and setting content filters. I have a group called “Professionals” and i place majority of the people I work with in that group with it limiting the content that is posted and no images that I have on my profile other then my profile images that have to be public.

If you don’t like the fact that social media is the trend for the youth and a very affordable way to have a custom application through FB interface, don’t complain about how the contest is run if you want a chance at $5,400 grand prize, I’m okay with you not entering thanks to social media it means one less person I have to beat out in this contest.

I can relate to the budget thing, I happen to be a professional web applications developer. I know that when I do “consulting” / “freelance” development outside of work my price tag is anywhere from $25 to $100 an hour, which is actually on the low side of “consulting” / “freelance” development for software. It really gets based on the labor hours and skill sets that have to go into the project as to what you are going to pay for it.

Keep up the great work MGS, you absolutely do not have to justify your logic to anyone that fact that you attempted is more then enough in my book. Lets be honest FB is not just social media anymore, it has become a platform / interface for small businesses to get solutions ou to people in an affordable manner, probably one of the reasons I am not working freelance development.

Scott – I think I’ve been as polite is warranted given the amount of people irate about having to use Facebook to get something for nothing.

Regarding my initial reply to your comment – you basically suggested that we are somehow using this contest to “track users” (grow our following, yes…’track’ not so much), and that our advertisers would have access to that same info.

Both insinuations are patently false, which is why I wanted to make sure other readers (and participants) understand as much.

      Scott

To Golfspy T- Wow, you insult me again, just amazing. ( “Track”- not so much) Your comment needs no explanation. Your PR needs a little refining.

      mygolfspy

I am the owner of MGS, and PR (which means BS, lying, stretching the truth, covering up, etc most times) is not what we are about. However if you are looking for honesty, truth, and being a stand-up no bullshit kinda guy we are your site. Unfortunately this old-fashioned way of doing things has been replaced with BS PR and media.

So if what you want is for us to lie to you to make you happy I can, but I would rather tell the truth and if you don’t like it I am sure you can find someone else to blow smoke up your ass. Just not gonna be on MGS.

Here is the TRUTH – none of our advertisers or us are secretly tracking your movements. This contest was done because we thought you guys would like it, and looks like a lot of people already are doing just that. And that Facebook aspect of it came in to save us a couple thousand dollars. And make it much easier to manage. Those are the facts. And who says that readers can insult us and we can’t give our opinion back? You are too used to being told the customer is always right type statement. I don’t get down like that Scott. If you insult what I have worked hard on and I think you have a leg to stand on…I will be the first to admit it…but when you don’t…once again I will be the first to say so.

      Scott

Scott what you originally said was “By requiring people to go to Facebook, you and your advertisers are able to track users in a more efficient way”.

All I said in my reply is that you are misinformed insomuch as Facebook does not allow us to track anything, nor will we be sharing any info (the only actual info we’re collecting is email addresses) with our sponsors.

Everything else is you taking offense, I presume, at being told your original statement was incorrect (which it was).

I meant no offense, and it’s too bad you’ve taken it that way, but it’s really time to put this aspect of the thread to bed, and focus on the readers who are interested in participating in the contest, or at least voicing their objections to the Facebook component.

Is it wrong to be a little happy with every comment I see about people not entering because it’s on Facebook? It just means one less person I have to compete against!

On a side note a couple of my friends have already asked me why I hate your site so much because of the comment I wrote on Facebook. I had to explain I actually love your site and that it’s part of a contest you’re running.

Don’t assume we’re haters- just disappointed. I can just imagine the amount of effort that went in to putting together such great prize packages. I get that I will not be able to enter without the free FB account. I have my reasons for not having one in the first place and if that excludes me from the contest, so be it. The disappointment comes from the build-up, as someone has already said, with no mention about the FB connection, from a site that prides itself on doing things a bit differently. But in the end it is also a business with budget considerations, which I also get. I’m not going to bail on what I believe is a great site because of this, but I am allowed my disappointment. Isn’t joining facebook free? Apparently I’m missing something, because I don’t get all the anger towards the facebook requirement. I don’t think anyone is requiring that you post your address, phone number, SSN, or anything else on facebook…just open a FREE account. Hell, open a facebook-specific email address if you don’t want Zuckerberg to have your “real” one.

I have had almost zero involvement in setting up this contest, but based on the lack of responses I’ve gotten from T and X lately, I know they are spending 24 hours a day trying to make this work.

Once again, I think the guys who are doing all this bitching and whining are overlooking the very simple reality that there is NO BUDGET. Tim, Dave, and myself are paid NOTHING. T and X left jobs that pay much more to work on this site full time. I’m sure there were ways to run this contest without facebook, but it seems they were cost prohibitive.

“Sorry” for the rant, but this is a huge contest that two guys spent months working on, and when I open this page I see a stream of guys bitching about it.

As I said, we knew the Facebook component would alienate some readers…and some of those would be long-time loyal readers. It’s not like this is the only giveaway we have, or will ever offer. There will be future opportunities that don’t involve Facebook.

But again, the complexity of the contest we wanted to run, along with our time and cost considerations left us with Facebook as the best option.

Quite honestly I find it trouble that long-time, and loyal readers, subscribers, etc. would truly have a problem with this. You guys know our situation (no big OEM advertisers), and what the implications are on our budget (we don’t have one). Despite that we were able to partner with OEMs both big and small to put together one hell of a prize package.

I have invested weeks of my life putting together this massive contest for those who choose to participate. The fact that some people are angry (disappointed I get, but angry…the sense of entitlement is bewildering) because they aren’t able to enter a huge giveaway 100% on their terms is offensive,

It appears that a Facebook link is required to participate. Seriously? The fun is NOT beginning. I guess “old schoolers” not doing FB are out.

f***ing facebook?!?! nice. guess I’m out. amazing prize packages, yes. amazing contest? not so much. count me very disappointed. to me “we knew we might lose a few entries” reads like “we knew we would be excluding a few of our loyal readers, subscribers and contributors.” yeah, I’m bitter.

SR, I don’t recall your name from ANYWHERE in the forum as a “contibutor,” so I’m curious, have you made a monetary donation to MGS that would qualify you as a “contributor?”….

And Dude, if a benign contest, that you voluntarily choose not to participate in, is enough to cause you bitterness, you’ve got issues far deeper than your disdain for FB…JMHO…….

Guys, grown-ups do not use (or for that matter necessarily trust) Facebook. Can’t believe the moving parts could not be managed in alternative technologies.

With nearly a billion people on Facebook, I don’t think it’s a stretch to assume a few are grownups. And yes…there are alternative technologies here, but when you consider that we have 2 full-time employees, and almost no budget, efficiency and cost control are extremely important to how we operate.

We knew Facebook would be a non-starter for some people. And while we do regret that some people will choose not to participate because of that, at the end of the day all we’re offering is a chance to win over 10K in prizes. Participation in any of our giveaways, regardless of the terms, is always optional.

How more gracious can our hosts be in answering a blitz of questions and explaining themselves. It makes sense that they’d need someone to manage this contest for them. If it weren’t facebook it would have to be someplace else.

I have an account, I’ve entered, I’ve encountered issues in entering despite the fact that I use facebook regularly but I’ve taken the time to learn how to work the contest. First place is worth $5,000. Do you expect something for nothing? At the very least we can be grateful to MyGolfSpy for everything the guys there do. Hopefully they’ll gain more recognition and membership from some of our facebook friends.

      Thanks guys very much.

DLouis808, are you in the USA ? If you are, then you can’t imagine all those who are dissapointed at not being able to enter 100’s,(if not 1000’s) of golf related contests,(or even in some cases, can’t even buy items) simply because they live in Canada ‘;’ Talk about putting up fences. Even if i never win one thing from MyGolfSpy, i can still take away the knowlage that i’ve gained about so many things golf related, and the cool people that add to the whole MyGolfSpy scene.

Unfortunately a Facebook account is required. Facebook was the only way we could manage the moving parts inexpensively.

We knew we might lose a few entries because of the facebook requirement.

The actual back-end of the contest is complex…essentially we have to account for entries, multiple rounds of voting, final results, etc, and of course, what gets displayed when requires a calendar/dating component as well.

Simply put, the website tools we have at our disposal don’t allow for us to manage this contest to the degree that it needs to be managed. Facebook applications provide an affordable way for us to put on what we think is a pretty amazing contest.

I find it really annoying that in order to enter this contest you need to join facebook. It would have been nice to know this ahead of time. I will not be joining and would like to be removed from your e-mail list. Thanks.
