TRUE linkswear TRUE tour – REVIEW

“A Ridiculously Comfortable Golf Shoe”

(Written By: GolfSpy Dave) If you read through the TRUE linkswear website you will run across a number of great quotes about their shoes.  “Slipper with traction” and “…more comfortable than my favorite sneakers” are two of my favorites.  These quotes set the expectation bar pretty high for these shoes.  Today we are taking a look at the 2012 TRUE linkswear tour model.  Can these TRUE tours really achieve the professed level of comfort while maintaining the necessary level of golf functionality?

Style

“If you ever catch me wearing those shoes, kill me.”  That is a direct quote from someone checking out Ryan Moore’s TRUE’s on the range at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro/Am last February.  While I think that his sentiment is way too harsh, it does demonstrate the presence and position that the relatively new TRUE shoes have in the golf marketplace.  Golfers are definitely aware of the TRUE product, whether a golfer likes the TRUE style, or not.

The TRUE tours do not look like traditional golf shoes.  As expected, those who hold the traditions of golf on a lofty pedestal view the TRUE style as a threat to the sanctity of the game of golf.  I’ll admit that that the TRUE style made me think “Clown Shoe” when I first saw them last year.  However, over time, I realized that I really liked the unique style of the TRUE linkswear shoes.  I like that they are different from the other golf shoes out there.  Many people would have a tough time telling traditional shoes apart if the brand logos were removed.  Not so with TRUE linkswear shoes.  The shape and design of the TRUE shoe may just be one that people either like or dislike.

Shape aside; there are some other cool aesthetic elements present in the TRUE tour.  There are excellent color choices available to the consumer, ranging from the conservative to the bold.  I loved the white and green combination when I first saw them.  For me, there was a bit of an emotional attachment as the colors reminded me of my old Adidas Rod Laver tennis shoes that shared the same color arrangement.  Upon closer inspection though, you can see that TRUE has taken the aesthetics of the shoe into consideration for even some of the most minor of details.  Take a look at the photos and you can see green stitching complementing the white body, embossed TRUE logo to the tongue, white spikes amidst the field of green on the bottom, as well as a second set of green colored laces to truly change the look of the shoe.

The style of the TRUE tour may not match your personal taste, but there is no denying that these shoes have style.

Style: 18/20 Points

Fit & Comfort

I have a wide foot.  It is more of a rectangle than a foot.  One of the things that attracted me to the TRUE tours is the fact that they look wide.  For me, the TRUE tours are true to size, although others have said that they go down a half size from normal to get a better fit.  Not necessary for me but your mileage may vary.

With “Fit” comes the concept of comfort.  The expectation of “slipper” type comfort was not far off from the reality.  I always take new shoes to the range a few times before taking them out on the course.  With the TRUE tours, I could tell right away that this would not be necessary.  The material is soft, but the shoe still feels firmly anchored to the foot.  The shoe feels a little thin and harsh when you walk through the parking lot, but as soon as you hit grass, it feels like the shoes disappear from your feet.  AMAZING comfort on the grass.

Fit & Comfort: 20/20 Points

Performance

Super comfortable on grass?  I bet you can see where the performance score is going.  I don’t think that I have ever walked a round in a shoe that is more comfortable than the TRUE tours.  They are so comfortable to wear that there was more than one round where I just drove home in the TRUE tours rather than switching back into my non-golf shoes. Also, although a proper gentleman doesn’t talk about foot sweat, the excellent ventilation in the shoes deserves mention as well.

I found the traction to be excellent in the TRUE tours, both on the grass and also on the artificial mats at the range.  Even on fairly wet and/or long grass, the cleats held me to the ground securely.  One other cool feature of the spike pattern is that they don’t seem to pick up as much junk as traditional soft spikes do.  There was a “sticky mud” incident one morning, but a bit of time dragging the shoe through a puddle/wet grass and the spikes were clean again.

My only real play criticism is the change in weight distribution that is promoted by the shoe.  The design of the TRUE tour really seems to cause a shift in weight for me toward my heels.  So much so that it almost feels like the toes are elevated.  What is happening, according to the TRUE website, is that the design has placed the heel and toes on the same plane, as opposed to traditional golf shoes where the heel is elevated compared to the toes.  Regardless, my feet and weight distribution feel different in the TRUEs compared to traditional golf shoes.

Is this difference a bad thing?  I don’t think so.  I went to the range and played multiple rounds in the TRUE tours without switching back to my old shoes during the process.  My game didn’t seem to suffer from the change in weight and I actually think that driving the ball improved.  My tendency is to go to my toes with the driver and the footprint of the TRUES seems to reduce this inclination.  Overall, I have the feeling that once I become accustomed to playing in the TRUE tours, switching back to a more traditional shoe may feel out of the norm.

Performance: 38/40 Points

Value

The TRUE tours come in at around $150 a pair.  While this is competitive with other shoes that offer the same waterproof performance, the lack of the ability to replace spikes does give me some trepidation about their longevity.  Perhaps this concern is unfounded, but I won’t really know how well the spikes hold up until I have had a chance to wear these for a season or two.  If the spikes do wear well, the value score should actually increase, as you would be able avoid spike replacement costs down the road.  Time will tell.

Value: 17/20 Points

Summary

Are the TRUE tours “ridiculously comfortable”?  I would probably say that they are “amazingly comfortable”.  People who wear TRUE shoes typically become TRUE loyalists, where the initial pair of shoes rapidly becomes multiple pairs.  When I first wore the TRUE tours to the range, the guy in the stall next to me noticed my shoes and asked if it was my first pair.  He was wearing a pair of tours from last year and he told me that he owned six pairs of TRUES and was planning on buying some of the 2012 models.  The TRUE lovers are loyal, and vocal.  Based upon my experiences with the TRUE tours, I foresee the ranks of TRUE lovers growing in 2012.

Having read many stellar reviews, I bought a pair of True Tours and walked 18 yesterday. Ended up with blisters on the bottom of both feet sort of right next to the balls of my feet toward the middle. They appear to have been caused by the round white traction nub located in the middle second down from the front of the shoe (see picture above). I cut it off with a razor, and assume that will solve the problem, but I’ll have to wait and see. There is so little cushion between the sole of the shoe and the traction nubs, that particular nub might cause blisters for other people too. I’m a righty and the blister was worse on my left foot.

Great, well it looks like the link goes to the 2011 model, (no round cleats on the tread) but at 40 % off its worth a mention. Rock Bottom is among the better Golf retailers out there.

Got a 2011 edition pair last month. Trying them on In the store, I liked the way they moved my weight back, which I thought would help since I tend to get over my toes . Wore them at the range a few times and found that my balance was much better.

Played a round today and I felt like I had to choke up on the club a little bit because the shoe’s sole is thinner.

As golf shoes go, they are very, very comfortable, very lightweight, they feel great while walking on grass. Even though I have wide feet, theses “mediums” fit very nicely.

Good traction in sand, too. I gave that a thorough test today during play, though that wasn’t my intention.

How do these compare with the ecco/Nike/Adidas big manufacturers more laid back golf shoes? Are the trues a class of their own?

I bought a pair in June 2011 and beat them up chasing balls into the canyons, playing in the rain, out of water hazards, and about 100 rounds. Not sure if they qualify as game improvement by definition, but for me, they did just that. Not only could I get a better feel for greens and the level areas on the t-blocks, I am able to be more stable with more weight on my heels and less roll. I definitely would appreciate a new pair of these great shoes.

I bought a pair of TrueLinkswear Tour shoes (black) last year. I liked the look so much, that I kept them to use on stage in my band. Very comfy! I then bought another pair of PHX’s to use on the course, which I have been wearing.

Love my 2011 model Tour shoes, despite the “clown shoe” look…have had some joking comments but they are absolutely great to play and walk in. I have a wide foot, so all the better with the Tour larger toe “box.”. Think the 2012 re-design / look improves the appeal from visual point of view, but just as comfortable. Going to add another pair!

True Links are the best shoes I have worn for Golf or anything else. I purchased Lynco foam orthotic insoles to give some arch and metatarsal support, worth the money. Wearing a 12 EEEE running shoe has made it impossible to find golf shoes. The outside rolls over, and has caused ankle sprains, and/or ruined shoes in about 2 months. Wide toe box, high quality, and excellent fit! I have purchased 3 pairs and wear them for almost everything, not just golf. I might wear them out quick but the comfort is well worth the price, and has become my day to day shoe. Try them out if you have a wide foot, they may just be the ticket!

I was born with club feet and pretty much have pain all day every day. I bought a black pair of the True PHX, and tried them on when they came in at work. I immediately started wearing them every day to work. I still played golf in my regular shoes, because I wanted to be able to wear “the most comfortable dress shoes ever” to work and not get them dirty. Went to Vegas a month later to play golf. First round played in my Asics golf shoes, played horrible, horrible foot pain. I decided to weart the Trues on the second day and that was a big change. I had very little pain that day, and that is amazing for me. I also tend to hit the ball thin, and I did not hit a thin shot all day. Just felt closer to the ground. Second pair is on order, so I can have a pair to play golf in and one for work. I am a big fan of this company, and this is the best my feet have felt in 20 years. I run the IT department in a bank and I am walking all day long on tile, and the trues perform better than any other shoe I have ever worn to work. Plus, they look good enough to wear with slacks. Everyone should try these shoes. I am debating getting a pair to do “P90X” and “Insanity” in every morning.

Totally OT: How would you compare P90X and Insanity? I’ve done P90X but I can no longer tolerate Tony Horton. Is Insanity of similar intensity? Were your results as good?

Insanity is much more intense. You do not stop moving. Amazingly, due to my feet, I can run or jog, but the short bursts with Insanity are fine. I have had pretty good results, but you need to follow the diet more than I did. I have also noticed that golf takes a lot less out of me. Also, my BP was high and after a month of Insanity, it was below normal. P90X is great, but I don’t feel winded with it. I am currently doing a hybrid of 2 days of P90X and 3 days of Insanity a week. Maybe I will add in some P90X2 in there also. P90X2 was probably the best workout for my golf game by far due to all the balance involved. Great results, but I did not have much to lose.

I bought Trues last season. I walk almost all of the time so they seemed a good fit. What’s been written in most reviews is true, they remain dry, there’s good traction and you can really feel the course which I found really helped on the greens. However, I ditched mine at the end of season. My Achilles were killing me by fall. Generally, I’d start rounds fine but by the back nine I was in pain and this was taking its toll in other sports as well. I talked to my doctor and the first thing she asked was whether or not I had any flat shoes? I figured the most likely candidate was the Trues so I got rid of them. So far this season (Canada) I haven’t experienced the same pain.

I wish I could say that I’m looking at getting another pair, I like the company and product but unfortunately it looks like they were the culprit for some pretty harsh pain after a number of months on the course. These are cool shoes and perform well, they just might not be the shoes for everyone. Really though, which shoes are.

Check out Lynco orthotics, They are all over the internet and can be found for you shape of foot. I wear some type of extra support in all of my shoes due to my size, (6’1 265) 12 EEEE Wide toe box, narrow heel. They make a world of difference, but are still flexible enough to feel the surface and not hinder good footwork. Orthotics in general have limited my back and knee pain. Hope this helps!

Love the shoes and ended up buying 5 pairs over the last two years….but same problem now as Mstod.. Tendinitis in the achillies and Dr. has identified the True Linkswear as the suspect due to the low heel and increased strain on the tendon.. Went back to my old FJ’s and no problem.. Not meant as a knock at the shoe but like Mstod…..i agree that they may not be for everyone. Will try orthotics in my True’s once i get this problem behind me as i preferred the feel and playability.

I kind of wish TRUE had gone with a green inner lining too, but these do look better than the Stealths IMO. Have any of you compared them side-by-side? How much of a difference is there in quality?

Do these come in different widths? I have an extremely wide foot. I wear runners in. 13 4e in width. So far I have only found 2 pairs of golf shoes that fit my feet, footjoy contours in x wide. They are not comfortable and they bruise my back foot near the ball of my foot after about 6 holes I can feel the pain and it lasts a couple of days after. My new pair are footjoy casuals and they are fairly comfortable and made huge. I only need 12 wide in these shoes although I can’t lace the up too tight or my left foot gets a little sore but if I lace them appropriately they are amazing. After 2 weeks of use I have already noticed wear on the spikes on the outside of my foot. I am hoping it’s just initial wear but well see. I would love to find alternatives.

Nick, TRUE Linkswear come in only a single width, though my understanding is they’ve received positive feedback from golfers with both narrow and wide feet. I haven’t tried the Stealth yet, but based on my own experience, I’d recommend the Tour model from this review. If the don’t fit, or you don’t like them, it’s not an issue. TRUE offers a money back guarantee.

After reading your review a while back (at the golf show) I purchased a pair of these, The Tours, in black. After two weeks of wearing them I purchased the White/Green ones. I would have to agree with you all throughout the article. By looking at the pics on the True Linkswear website you can’t actually tell that the toes are wide (clown shoe looking). So, when I got them in the mail I was not a fan of that look at first. After wearing them, and wearing them in, I quickly got over that and like I said, soon purchased another pair. Actually, it wasn’t even that I ‘got over’ the look, I like it now.

They are SUPER comfortable on the course. I walk 90% of the time. Off the couse (mainly in the parking lot), like you said, ‘a little harsh’, but no golf shoe is meant to be worn off the course. In the clubhouse on carpeting, not so bad. This is most likely because of True’s Barefoot Platform, meaning the platform or sole is only 10mm off the ground, compared to 22mm average of other shoes. But on the turf, you can really feel that your feet are closer to the ground.

The ventilation is GREAT. I notice every time I take these off that my feet aren’t nearly as wet/sweaty as they used to be with every other pair of golf shoes I’ve worn. At $150, for as comfortable as they are, I won’t hesitate to buy another pair when mine wear out. These are the most comfortable golf shoes I’ve ever worn. Love ’em!!!

The Tours are awesome John. I just wore them all weekend while I worked a booth at a golf expo. Feet were still happy at the end of day three.

Green laces are just a style bonus
