What’s With All Those Screws?

What’s With All Those Screws?

Months of hype have been leading up to this.

Members of the MyGolfSpy staff are currently in transit to meet with Parsons Xtreme Golf (or PXG for short) to learn more about the so-called technology behind the company’s inaugural equipment line.

You can bet we have questions:

  • What’s with the screws?
  • What’s with the names (0811 driver, 0311 irons, etc.)?
  • When you’re pricing strategy makes Miura look like a bargain brand, what’s the point?

And that’s all before we even start talking about actual performance.

parsons2

After all, we’re talking about a company that’s achieved absolutely nothing in the golf industry, and yet has the audacity to make the sort of claims that would make the guys at TaylorMade and Callaway blush. Parsons talks the talk…

At first glance, the PXG 0311 irons look like a blade, but they are designed to outperform today’s larger game-improvement irons in both distance and forgiveness.

And that’s just the irons.

You can bet we’re going to find out how well that story holds up.

Submit Your Questions

We’re sure you have questions too.

If there’s something you want to know about Parsons Xtreme Golf, its products, its business strategy, and where it sees itself in the golf industry, post them in the comment section below. We’ll take as many of your questions to the Parsons team, and get you the answers you deserve.

For those asking, the reason for this article is they wanted to know what we wanted to know about the product since they were going to their facility.

Keep it coming Rookieblue7, I want to learn more about this clubs. I hope nobody gets them, so I can be the only ones with them. I’m tired of everybody having the same BS equipment all the time. #Innovation

The Go Daddy dude with all the cash has miss the point here – people, regardless of how wealthy they are, are not interested in having LOTS of adjustability. The wealthy weekend warriors – who probably play week-days too… will pay for quality, but it has to be simple quality. you don’t buy a Mercedes and have to adjust 69 things to get it feeling and driving good. Parsons should have developed clubs that feel great and are easy to hit – all over the face…..that don’t require a technician to get best sorted.

Wow, is all I can say, if this clubs are getting compared to a Mercedes. Kudos to Parsons.
One thing is true, the newest and youngest company to sign up a few pros, and the equipment is not even out! They must be doing something right.

I’m a Marine, so is Bob Parsons. MOS 0311 is the United States Marine Corps (USMC) Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) code for Rifleman. It is the primary infantry MOS for the Marine Corps. He’s implying the irons are deadly accurate like a Marine.

MOS 0811 is the United States Marine Corps (USMC) Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) code for Field Artillery Cannoneer. He’s implying the driver is long like a cannon.

Since most OEMs offer irons with some form of “hot” steel insert backed by a thermoplastic goop, is the primary distinguishing feature of their irons a dramatically higher MOI arising from their screw based perimeter weighting? Do they anticipate that most of their sales will come from Japan?

also, i’m kinda with Mike here- you already introduced this brand, and no new information. i thought the point of this website was no hype. especially for some big money brand.

My question. Why is this even an article? The article says virtually nothing and you already introduced this brand. Really? $$$

That was my first thought too… This seemed like it was either just a filler article since there was nothing else to publish or they’re just pumping this brand for some reason…

Can I change and dial in swingweights? It drives me bananas that my 8 iron is D5.5 and my 7 is D 6.5 because that degree of fine tuning isn’t easy with tungsten and glue. And no one building clubs is as anal as me. Is there a manual for the do it yourself guy to tweak stuff?

If there’s one thing I definitely don’t want to do more of, it’s adjust weights, gravity cores, flip-zones, etc. I don’t care how “infinitely adjustable” this driver is… I’m not going to go through the 65,536 permutations that are possible with 16 adjustable weight, each having two possibilities (heavy or light). Not even a tour player would do this (or would even have time)! Pass.

My guess, as a former U.S. Marine, is they are named after jobs nomenclatures. 0811 is an Artilleryman, 0311 is an infantryman. These make sense to me anyway.

Well Rocco is using em now so who knows but its all hype as usual , Im sure they feel good like any other club if u have a good swing but how much better performance can you get, you cant its at its limit . A club is a club it all comes down to yr SWING PERIOD.

The fact that Rocco is on the PXG staff is, in it self, an indication that team PXG has a very …unconventional… understanding of what (or who) motivates the blue blood golf community (the folks that can afford this stuff) to give consideration to a line of equipment. In a word: Callaway had no issue losing Rocco to Dick’s…..

now THIS would be a fun test… screw performance… let a guy play a few rounds… a couple with the crappiest gear we can throw at him, and another with stuff fit to his swing – how different would his score be?

“The platinum-colored screws are made from high density tungsten material. The black screws are made from low density titanium material. The heavier tungsten weights provide a significant amount of moveable mass in the club head, which is easily adjusted to optimize launch, spin and direction.”

Do they have any plans for more moderately priced options in the future?

Will they submit products for MGS testing?

Doesn’t look like any open holes if you look at the image up top. There are two sets of screws … some with a black finish, the others with a silver finish. Otherwise those open holes would probably be good for catching dirt and otherwise be a real pain in the tookus to clean out continually.

Since they are priced for the top 1% of the 1%, I will never look at these, let alone game them.

Well I believe the Callaway razr fit Xtreme won the best overall driver from MGS 2 years ago. I take that pretty seriously considering I actually still have one in my bag. Its a name. Golf companies mess with spelling all the time. The only reason I won’t consider the Parsons equipment is the price. I could care less something’s name as long as the product is good.

I’d love to know if the screws have functionality, are interchangeable for weight distribution and how the open holes (which I’ll assume are to relocate said screws) effect aerodynamics. I’d think they’d be pockets that would trap air and slow club head speed just looking at it. I’d also like to know if the heads are manufactured to sit square , open or closed and what their tolerances are as far as loft/lie.

From the web site…”The PXG 0811 driver’s one-of-a-kind adjustable Zoned Weighting System features 16 interchangeable screws on the sole of the driver, enabling players of all swing speeds to optimize their trajectory for maximum distance and accuracy.

The platinum-colored screws are made from high density tungsten material. The black screws are made from low density titanium material.
