So…yesterday we asked you what was your (current) perception of Wilson Golf? Lots of comments still coming in but between what we heard on the site, Facebook and Twitter I think we have a pretty good idea of where you think the brand currently stands in the industry.

And so does Wilson. Which is why Wilson hired a whole new group of people to be in charge, a new club designer and a totally re-vamped R&D facility…they are aware of where they are and they know they needed to make changes. Which brings us to the purpose of today’s post. Today we told you we would show you a couple new products they have from what they are calling the D100 line. We have some “spy pics” of the new 2013 Wilson D100 Driver & Wilson D100 Irons.

“The Right Light”

These are for the highest handicap golfer so before you scratch golfers start screaming….oh man look at all that offset or look how thick that top-line is…remember these probably aren’t for you. The idea behind the SuperLight D100 series is all about “The Right Light”. Basically the ultra-light tech is a big buzz word in golf right now. But if not done right it leads to diminishing returns in regards to distance and accuracy. Is there lighter clubs compared to the D100 driver and irons? Yes…the Cleveland line is a perfect example. But they don’t just want light they want “The Right Light”. And after a lot of testing not only on their clubs but also with their competitors, they think they have done it the right way.

You will not only produce higher swing speeds, ball speeds and distance but also and most importantly accuracy for the properly targeted player. Which we will also highlight in a fitting we did with a properly fit golfer in the new D100 line-up. He gained +4 swing speed, +6 ball speed and was 10 yards more accurate…more info on this coming soon.

Just bought D100 driver. Excellent set up, and long off the tee. About a 15 handicap. Shaft is the Ozik R, 4.1. Accuracy was a problem, had it shortened to 45″, recalibrated swing weight back to D1. Now it is very accurate and no sacrifice in distance. This is a great driver. Highly recommend it. Wish they would offer shorter shafts.

I am very interested in buying the Wilson Staff Women’s D100 irons her in Canada. Can you direct me to a store where I can see them? The price should be 20 % Lower because the tariff has been removed for sports equipment coming into Canada from the USA, according to the new Harper Government Budget deliver today, March 21, 2013.

I ordered irons yesterday. Hit them side by side with Taylormade RocketBladz. At least 6 – 8 yards longer with the Wilsons, but that’s just me. 13 handicap.

Foe everyone who is ripping the driver for its looks you may have a point there, but as for performance I’ve just been hitting this club at a demo day today and I can honestly say it is a pleasure to hit, it’s long and forgiving, a lot more so then my ping i20 which is a great club! And trust me it is longer with very similar spin. Also the woods and hybrids are sweet I actually purchased 1 of each. The shaft is also top quality. If ur after performance which I believe is most important do not overlook these clubs. Just cos a club looks good doesn’t mean it performs good. And it’s cheaper than the like of shit company’s like taylormade. My point is dont knock it till u tried it

I was trying to find reviews of the new Wilson D-100 irons that are on the market. I just read SaraH’s reviews and now I am sold. A gentleman that owns a local golf store here was giving me his specs on the irons. He is a former European tour golfer and has plenty of knowledge of the game. His swing speed on his driver is about 115mph and I’m not too far behind him in that category. I have played Mizuno MP30 irons for a couple of years and now I need a bit more forgiveness in my game. Brian I’m glad my post was helpful. MY new D100 Irons came in last Friday. Went out and played them. Just an update, with the 7 iron, in my r9’s I had a total distance of 133. With the new D100 irons, my carry distance is 157 with a total 168. I am so very happy I made the change. For anyone else not believing in the club- the shaft in my D100 irons is the exact same as what was in my r9’s. Weight, length, grip, are all the same plus the lofts on the club are the same. The technology in the club head really makes this club! I will gladly enjoy being 25+ yards longer with every swing.

Thank you for the update Sara. My irons should be here this week or early next. I’m really excited about playing these irons. I will need to play a few rounds w/ them b/c of the distance variations from my Mizuno MP30’s. Also Sara, those are impressive numbers you’re showing. I am also glad to hear that the store I bought these irons from wasn’t blowing smoke up my a$$. The gentleman was very helpful and fitted me well. I will post a review when I play these irons. Thank you again.

I think Wilson has some marketing and budgetary problems with their Staff line but having played them for many years (C and D sets), I think their irons are maybe the most underrated in the industry. Even then newest sets can be had for less than half of the MSRP and at that price, they’re an incredible value. My experience with woods and hybrids is not great so I avoid them. But I agree with the question, where are they going?

Too many people are putting way too much stock into the basic look of a club, especially irons!! Can you even see what the cavity looks like at address? I care about the performance of the club in my hand. I have gone through every brand of OEM iron. I’m also a club fitter and club builder and at the end of the day my Wilson Staff irons always find their way back into my bag. I’ll put my Ci11’s to the test against anything on the market right now. As for these clubs. I can see where the Callaway comparisons come in on the driver and irons but in terms of cavity back looks, it’s what all the big name companies are doing these days. The carved out cavity is to promote heel and toe weighting to keep the clubhead stable at impact. Bash this company all you want but SERIOUSLY these clubs are good!!

Amen Pedro, I have the V2s and the Ci11s. I keep putting the C11s back in the bag. The V2s are amazing, but being an old fart the Ci11s with the graphite shafts is a better fit for me, and they are great.

Wait till you hit the new D100 woods and hybrids, they are by far the best yet.

My family owns a golf shop where we have been caring the Wilson Staff product for the last two years. I personally was not originally on board with the idea for I had the same views toward Wilson golf clubs as many of you seem to. However when I saw the Wilson Staff Ci11 I had my doubts and then I gave them a chance and was very surprised by the results. The irons were longer and straighter than any of their competitors that I had compared them to and they had a better weighting for a feel player like me than the other clubs. So when I had the opportunity to swing the new D100 product line a month ago I was interested in seeing what the results of the club would be. I will say upfront I am a seven handicap who has played TaylorMade irons for the last eight years. I currently have in my bag TaylorMade r9 irons. When I hit both the r9 iron and D100 iron side-by-side on our Zelocity launch monitor the results blew me out of the water. I was on average ten yards longer with the Wilson D100 irons AND I was even more accurate. These will be going in my bag in January along with the fairway woods, hybrid and driver. That is how impressed I was with the feel of the club! Trust me if you give Wilson a chance you will understand why I have made the switch from the other guys and put Wilson in my bag. Like their commercial says “Wilson Staff SERIOUSLY.” If you give Wilson Staff Irons a chance you will understand why Wilson staff was our number one selling iron this year in our store.

Kevin, I think I understood them to say after the first of the year. I suggested they do it ASP, as they are that good and really could help with the Product. The Dr. has replaced me Taylor Super Fast, and the Hybrid is amazing, compact, all Black, and a little cannon.

They will be worth the weight, although I wood like to see them soon. One of our Pros hit the 3 wood and said it is every bit as good as his RBZ. I will be waiting for the frwy wood and a couple of more hybrids. They are all D 100 series.

I just met with the Wilson rep yesterday and his boss, the big mucky muck and to make a long story short have a new D100 Driver in me bag today, plus a new hybrid, they are really good.

The Driver is much better looking and shaped than the pictures appear and is HOT! The 47 gram Matrix shaft is good and the face is unlike any of the Wilson Drivers in the last few years, IT IS GOOD!

I was told that the Tour Staff has been looking at it and that Ricky Barnes IS playing it. I can hardly wait to get the rest of the Woods, and the Hybrids are WOW.

Rather than trying to find ways to knock it,,,,, try it.

I think a lot of the comments are just riot mentality . These clubs don’t look bad at all but some of you just want to be on the right side of the argument. See how they play and then judge. There is store outside of Charlotte NC that kills with the Wilson line because it works for the customer AND he the dealer can make a fair profit. Further he is not the 20th TM or Ping store in town. Everyone wants the little guy to make it then kicks him when the herd says it is not cool enough.

I usually like WS irons, but these are a step back from the Di11s & especially the Ci11s.

I’ll give the driver a try if its like the Cleveland Classic line. I’ve been playing the 270 for about 6 months & really like the light feel. Seems much easier to get the head through the ball with an ultralite driver. Sound will be a key component though. I don’t like tinny sounding drivers & the last WS driver I had (the Spine) sounded like an aluminum bat.

I guess Wilson is trying to be all things to all people! But so is everyone else.It’s about market share. But the product has to look good or be a new Idea type product.The Irons look as good as most everyone’s max. game improvement irons and they should be tested against the competition before release. The Driver looks like *^>> *.Somebody wake up and design a driver that is not 3 years behind the rest! ADJUSTABLE!! The small shield I can live with . But the bright white lettering has got to go! It should look bold , mean , powerful,..(Weights?) for tuning.
Hire a better graphics designer and get ahead of the trend . LEAD DON’T FOLLOW
I use to drag race and we could always find a way to get more with thinking outside the box!!
The rules only told use what we could do , not how we did it!!I know a way to lighten the head and shafts without milling and that adds room for ideas which then adds performance!!To be the best you have to beat the best…

About the only informative information coming out of all these comments is similar to the “old days” when guys spent their time debating +++’s and —“s (or positives and negatives) of Fords and Chevys…No two can agree, because everyone has a preconceived idea of what they like and what clubs should look like. Wilson is trying to come up with a winner…and I for one admire their intent…and wish them luck..

Lots of good posts here, but unfortunately they sometimes forget that ALL clubs look the same today. They, all of them, just copy a successful club and change the colors, or logo, or whatever, but all the same.
One big point is that in the old days, there was only one line offered, no matter how good or how bad you were, you only had one club to chose. Now there where other models sold in Dept. stores and sporting goods stores, but they were the Signature series and not the same quallity.

Another thing is the fact that today we have several lines in a brand for different Golfers. You have the light ones, the heavy ones, the game improvement clubs and the Tour models, and others in between. Wilson had done great with the Tour Irons, fabulous clubs, but the need Good Woods that can compete with TM, Cally, Titleist, Ping, etc for the good player and the light stuff is not the answer. They need a strong Driver that the Pros will put in their bags.
Light is great in testing and for Women and Seniors, but a strong young player needs some heft for accuracy. Sure, light can be longer, but for accuracy you need a bit more heft. They are trying, so lets sit back and see.
Oh, and the logo,,,,, stick with the Red and Black, and not all black, Wilson and the shield plus the Staff name IS Wilson Staff.

I played the old Wilson Staff Goosenecks for a loooong time and still love ’em, even tho I’ve moved onto using some irons from TM and Srixon. Always wanted a set of FG62 blades, but I’m not good enuff to hit ’em consistently. So I have a nostalgic appreciation for the Wilson Staff name and pedigree. The new FG & V2 irons are sweet too. Wilson is definitely trying to offer some newer designs, but the loud graphics are a definite contradiction to the historically classy look of past “Staff” designs. These GI irons look a cool and interesting design that’s been puked upon by the marketing and graphics departments. Adams knows how to highlight their technology without shouting “Look at This!!!!”

Despited the looks, I would at least like to demo the irons. The driver not so much.

Correct me if I am wrong here but the driver bottom is the exact replica of the callaway Diablo Octane and the Irons resemble the RBZ line with a little less in the cavity. I know that companys take from each other when there is a good scheme but this is Blatant plagiarism.

I thought we were trying to make our “OWN” identity no??

I think Wilson (at least the golf division) is a company in transition. These were probably in the pipeline before Vrska came on board, so he may not have had much say in the design.

Clubs are fine, nothing special. Di11/Ci11 were better looking, in my opinion. I am sorry to see that they went away from the wide-tip shaft. In my experience, that was a technology that flat out worked and even set Wilson apart a little in the max SGI category.

The logo is nice but cheapened on the face of driver. The “D-100” is so big and weirdly positioned on the driver it again cheapens the look. Adjustable drivers are the norm these days and give a feeling of quality design, even if a fitting session will give a much better result. The iron’s sole definitely looks like a copy of others, so a cheap design, even with the nice inserts…

i like the driver, but the iron looks like a cheap design iron. the red badge is really disturbing. i think they need to bring some forged version of the ci7 – ci11. that would attract many people that thinks forged is better than cast. a forged forgiving cavity back would be nice for us average golfer. i personally use the ci7 in rotation with my adams cmb, and i love the ci7 iron performance, but the design and feel is a bit behind other manufacturer (at that time). and plase wilson, weaken your loft a little. 44/45 Pw is too strong.

Driver looks cheap compaired to the competition. Heck, I bet most of us commenting could come up with a more appealing design. I know I could. W/S just can’t get their drivers right? As for the irons, at least they got rid of the Fat Shaft. Hopefully W/S will have a few more custom shaft offerings for their irons next year. I’m guessing a new ball to replace the C:25 also.

I have a set of FG 62’s. I love them. I have their DX 5 wood, 22 and 25 deg. hybrids. Wonderful clubs. I wish they would put out a nice classic looking driver and an iron a bit more compact. Hybrids with a smaller head would also be nice.
Those big clunky clubs that look like car bumpers are just plain ugly.

The irons look better than most SGI’s imo. Lose the red in the center of the badge and they would look better.

The driver has an ok shape but it looks a 10 year old with a box of crayons got ahold of it. Ok, so we’ve got some red, we’ve got some funky grooves on the face and a logo in the middle, We’re not just light, we’re SUPER LIGHT, so scrawl that on there too Johnny! Don’t forget the brand and the model! No, c’mon, bigger than THAT, take up the whole thing, there’s still room! Sometimes one has to know when to quit.

I personally think both of this things are butt ugly… I have to say that they are trying too hard to wow people… shit look at TMaG all they had to do was paint drivers white to wow people and get the zombie like reaction…

I think the driver is ugly and I think the irons are even worse. Good thing they didn’t try to get crazy with their blade design at least the FG62 is clean looking… Again sometimes less is more and you just need a different paint job and good marketing angles…

That massive logo in the cavity is an immediate turnoff for me. Sorry. Soles look almost identical to the burner and rbz lines… clean up that cavity and class it up a little and you might have something. As is, its a no go for me…

Almost looks like they’re trying too hard to appeal to and attract consumers away from other major brands. With that said these are not bad looking clubs at all, if that driver performs I’d bag it considering my love for my Fybrid 3 wood. And those irons look a lot less clunky and slicker than most Callaway stuff out there.

Nomatter what 19* hybrid I put in the bag, and I’ve put a few, lol, I keep goin back to the 19.5* “Fybrid”…That club must be 3-4 years old, but damn, I can hit it from anywhere…

I can see why people are saying the irons look somewhat like Burners, but I think these look much better. As most Staff equipment goes, it has a classier look to it than the others. The underside of the driver looks cool, wish the face was black too though. Also good thinking on the “high end” shaft, but as mentioned “made for” doesn’t usually gain much traction today.

Overall I like the looks of this lineup and if Wilson can keep their momentum from the last couple of years’ forged irons, they should be in good shape. I would be excited to see a good players driver from them.

Wilson has LOST their compass. Rather than building on the tradition or the brand and RESPECT it, it seems that the focus to to built CHEAP looking clubs. When I go to Roger Dunn, I see Titleist, Callaway and so many others riding their identity. Even their wanna be pro irons look “cheap”, straight for BIG 5 or WalMart. It is sad that the current management does not seem to have a clue as to what their are sitting on. Wilson ought to be at the level of Titleist and move a lot of high class product, instead they keep focusing on becoming WalMart specials. Wilson, please observe Adams new design and focus on these not on 5 year old Callaway designs with even poorer graphics. The new clubs seem fitted for a Muni-pro shop in the middle of Arkansas and not for a CC. Not interested in even trying them! I like my old FG62 and other clean designs of the past, Staff Tour Blade, just add some playability to these designs and drop the graphics.

+1 THIS…I can’t say it any better….Spot on for their GI and SGI irons…The 62s are as classic as classic can get, and I like their look better than my Mizzy 68s..

The Tour Vs & V2s are a little too busy on the face-back for my tastes, though a lot of guys like ’em, so it’s probably me that’s out of touch..I’m just a minimalist, especially on muscle-backs & cavity-backs…

But like MGS T said, the GI/SGI market likes the “NASCAR” look(PhanaJG24, you’re lovin this Bro..lol), so I guess ya give ’em what they want, though I really like the look of the Mizzy JPX-800 & HD series…Pretty conserrvative for the GI/SGI maarket..

I wonder how long before the plastic starts fallin off of the face-backs?…That’d suck..lol…

Oh yea, I don’t like the groove design on the driver, and while I love the Staff shied, not on the face…How bout the sole?…Just a thought…Though I guess if this isn’t a player’s driver, it might not matter….

I had played Wilson for many, many years and I really like their offerings this year. The D line looks great and has it’s own personality so I don’t know why they would want to produce a “look alike” iron. I think that it really comes down to getting people to hit their irons in order to sell them. These clubs don’t produce any excitiement at all. I really though they were on the right track with the black C’s. I can see those with black KBS Tour shafts and black GP Multi Decade grips then marketing those as “The Black” (think Bethpage.) Or offering that finish throughout the whole line as long as it wears well… They should be thinking like an American brand like Harley-Davidson or Cadillac and bring some “swagger” with alternate finishes to go along with their performance clubs… because those clubs perform great.

Please don’t destroy what Wilson once stood for. No disrespect but if your marketing and management people had any common sense your company would still be a contender.
But in Wilson Sporting Goods case common sense isn’t so common. Listen to your customers

To me, these clubs indicate design confusion at Wilson. The shaft choice *must* have been chosen to establish a premium status, yet the head designs and finish (especially driver sole) add up to a rather cheap appearance. Game Improvement doesn’t have to mean cheap, so are they targeting a premium or a mid-level price point?

Wilson needs to go the way of Tour Edge IMO. Make their premium line of clubs with a different name. Tour Edge has Bazooka and Exotics, two entirely different product lines for two entirely different customers at two distinctly different price points. When I hear “Wilson” I certainly don’t associate it with a tour presence and clubs for avid players. I think of box sets and SmartCore rocks that are less than a buck a ball. It is going to be very hard for them to make a club that is accepted mainstream when their name has such a cheap connotation in golf.

I think I can see some Burner/S3/AMP inspiration in the iron. Looks good. I actually like the cavity and the badge.

Ok looking driver. Couldn´t care less if the shaft is made for. They all do it.

Errrr TP4.1HD eh? I know the .1 from Matrix denotes that it’s been altered but I wonder how much it’s been altered from the original shaft ($1000 shaft by the by)

Looks like a bunch of Callaway Diablo Octane in that driver and a healthy dose of TM Burner in the irons. Not making a good or bad judgement there, just first impression…

Yep that was my though on them as well. Much too familiure. They look ok, but we have seen this film before and remakes from new directors are rarly as good as the originals. I was hoping for something a bit more innovative.

If they don’t significantly outperform the Burner and Octane then they will already fail since those models are already discounted.
