HOW IT’S MADE! – Xenon Custom Putters

A Truly Custom Product

There are custom putters and then there are CUSTOM putters. Lumpy over at Xenon Golf…he is one of the few left in the industry making truly CUSTOM putters.

How custom?

You got a napkin and some basic sketching skills?

If you can dream it, Lumpy can make it. Lumpy has been making putters for a few years now, but recently ramped up the business and started churning out dozens of customs out of the small shed in his backyard. And unlike today’s high volume shops that rely heavily on computers to do the milling work for them, Lumpy  does all of his milling by hand. He’s an artist.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Xenon putters is the creativity you see in his designs. With most major putter manufacturers, they are limited to producing the market staples. I’m talking about Anser-style blades, traditional mallets; all the stuff that sells and sells well. The problem with that approach is that it means that some of the best ideas never get made because of the risk involved with putting an “out of the box” idea in to production.

With Xenon putters, as you can see from their Facebook Page, your own mind is the only limitation. For those that are not in to handmades, I still suggest you take a look at his work. This guy is making putters on one of the smallest machines you could ever imagine a putter being produced from, and the finished products are absolutely sick.

One conversation with Lumpy leaves little doubt that his putters are true labors of love.

How Xenon Putters Are Made

We had Lumpy from Xenon Putters make one of his best sellers, the kUrve.  What you see below is the step-by-step process it took to make the: Handmade kUrve in 303SS, with electric blue accents and welded flow neck.

Let Lumpy know what you think!

just got my second xenon putter and it will probably not be the last one… after I tried my First xenon putter, my old scotty feels very hard- the xenon ones have so much softer feel and just look much better!

      Charlie,

I’m with you. While “performance” is in the eye of the beholder, satisfied customers speak volumes. It’s definitely possible to spend $350 for an OTR putter and improve your putting tremendously (if you happened to buy a putter that fits your stroke better its entirely plausible whether it says SC on it, or any other brand name). The difference is that you are getting a product that is every bit as solidly constructed plus, the guy who’s name is on it made it from start to finish particularly for you.

I believe that a golfer could putt just as effectively with a $10 putter that fits his stroke as a $5,000 putter. In the very unique niche of boutique club making, especially putters, it’s more about providing the buyer with an experience that you couldn’t possibly get from buying an OTR putter.

No question Xenon putters perform as well as the best putters available, but I’ll bet owning one is infinitely more satisfying and the ordering process is far more enjoyable than buying a putter OTR.

Fantastic article! I am the proud owner of 4 Xenon Putters and I can tell you first hand that you won’t find a better, more accomodating guy to work with than Lumpy. If you are considering buying an expensive retail putter in the near future, contemplate this: for less than $100 more, you can own a 100% American hand-made product built exactly the way you want it. Not only does this include setting the specs (length, loft, lie, head weight, offset, toe hang) to suit your stroke, but also the design of the putter itself. Easy decision.

      I dunno… I like my Scotty a lot…
What do you mean by outperform? I get pretty amazing distance control and I feel like I have a good amount of face control.
I played a ghost spider and 2 odyssey putters before receiving the Scotty as a gift. The improvement in my scores was pretty much immediate.

Camerons for me just do not perform, big price tag for a putter (IMO) is pretty average. A putter off the shelf for me just isn’t an option for me, and although you can get scotty’s made to fit, it still isn’t the same as totally designing your own putter!
I have a copper putter, at the moment I am struggling to think of an off the rack putter that is copper?
Plus all the other materials that Lumpy uses as well! You need to try these putters, trust me!

Amen to your thoughts on custom vs OTR. I just purchased a copper putter from someone else (not off the rack yet) and it is the best putter I have used in many many years. I am wondering why others do not seem to want to use copper… The price of the metal????

I an seriously thinking about commissioning (I guess that is a better word than buying in this case) a Xenon or Byron Morgan putter.

So a question for Charlie and flaglfr, you both have copper putters, but as you point out these are few and far between, so I have never had the opportunity to try one. Could you try to put words on how it differs from milled stainless steel?

I use a Scotty today as I thougt it felt “softer” than for example a Ping Anser Milled (more hard, crisp), but still a true milled feeling. I don’t like the either “dull, dead” or “springy” feeling of a face insert, of which I have experienced both.

So my question is, how does copper feel compared to a milled steel face (given somewhat similiar millpattern)
