SPOTTED! – 2012 Cleveland Black Tour Driver

SUPER STEALTH – Cleveland Black Driver

Today we give you a sneak-peek at the 2012 Cleveland Black Tour Driver.  Now this is pretty outside-the-box looking for Cleveland…and honestly it slipped under our radar.  Not too shocking that this one got under our radar though..for one it’s stealth black…and secondly seeing as Cleveland really hasn’t released a driver in the past 5 years that was polarizing to the average golf consumer…made this prototype SUPER STEALTH to our radar systems.

RATE THIS DRIVER!

Gotten quite a few emails about this one…which means at least they have created some interest for this new driver.  But I want to know what all of the readers think about this one.  Let Cleveland know your thoughts!

Do you like the new all black design? What do you think the “Speed Crown Design” will look like?  Think this is an improvement on previous Cleveland driver designs?  Think you will be giving this one a try?

So…tell them what you think…rate this driver on a scale from 1-10 for appearance (10 being the highest score). Take a second and leave your 2 cents…you never know…your opinion might just become part of the next prototype!

wow ! just tried that driver today and I was thrilled right away…so easy to hit ! the feel is incredible and adding yardage simple..over 200 yards easy…can’t believe it !! easier for me than my Razor Hawk draw that I hit an average of 190 yards with…so the gain for me will be fantastic !! love the look too !!! thank god for that Miyasaki shaft !!

Bought this driver at the 7.5 loft.
Instantly hitting ’em 30+ yards further, and the club sounds insane when you nut it!
      Taylor Made who?
People WILL ask you about this club, it’s happening regularly to me.
So sweet! Good on ya Cleveland, and thx!

First time I ever hit this driver on a monitor, my swing speed was 8 MPH faster, which obviously means increased distance. Took it out to play and WOW!! Best driver I ever hit.
I truly enjoy the lighter shaft, makes a world of difference.
      You need to try it.

I had the priviledge this past weekend of hitting this club. It looks good and being only a 440 cc size makes it look like a driver. IT IS HOT! My buddy is hitting it further than ever and he is rocken a high draw with an X shaft in it and he is 55 years old. Solid was the word that came to mind when I hit it. At this point not comercially available most of us should be hitting the CG Black which is BAD ASS!!!

What a lot of people don’t realize is this Black driver is for the player that has a swing speed under 100 – it is not for the Pros or the above average speed swingers 100 +
According to Cleveland VP – heard a interview with him this club is designed for the player that needs help keeping the ball straight and adding yardage. A 100 plus swinger will not get the results or distance that an average golfer will.
They would be better off with the other Cleveland models.
And everyone should know their swing speed and ball speed and be fitted for the proper club.

Looks great, I always like black drivers. I would love to see a wider face, with more pear-shaped profile. If this driver ends up like that my 9088UL might have some competition.

      Some more comments:

      1) PLEASE let “speed crown” mean “HiBore” style crown.
      2) Love the fact that it has a screw to adjust headweight. I hope it means we have access to the internals of the head, i.e. can hotmelt without needing to pull the shaft.
      3) Hope this comes in a 11.5 loft, for us low bombers
      4) Assuming a Miyazaki shaft. Something comparable to a Tour AD Di (hi launch, low spin) would be great.

By far, the best looking Cleveland driver to date. I agree with many others that they have to go away from the “lighter, faster” approach and get back to what they were known for. Solid drivers that outperformed the competition. As someone that works in a golf retail store, Cleveland has had the slowest year (along with Nike) ever, in terms of sales, because the current product is just awful and has no pizzaz or appeal to consumers. This is the first step in the right direction!

From this one view I’d give it a rating of ‘Best looking Cleveland Driver to date’ The address shape seems to be pretty symmetrical which will be a nice change from Cleveland’s more pear shaped offerings. The Bug looks Chrome to me, not white, but I could be wrong. Lets just hope that Cleveland makes this for players and not only offered in some super duper ultra extreme light weight so that I will actually want to play it.

I love the look. If they put a high quality shaft in it like they did this years model I think they will have a winner. Let’s just hope they release it here in the US not in Japan first and here two years from now. Would love to see the club at address if it is square and not closed I think they have a winner. Also need to watch what they put as an alignment aid on top.

      Berniez40,

Would disagree that the HiBore was a “disastrous” golf club. Vijay played it along with tons of their staffers for quite a while. Most innovative club to come out in eons that was then copied by ALL the OEMS as it related to stretching out the back end of a golf club and increasing MOI. Very hot face on that club as well. Cannot speak to the Monster, looked like that club never really gained much traction. You might not like the HiBore looks but it was a solid performer in my opinion. It was too darn loud, that I remember.

Wouldn’t mind seeing the top line of the club. In Chicago that’s the part we see when we are about to swing. Appears to have a traditional shape to it, which I like. I think lighter is a sacrifice for feeling where the club is. Swinging faster and crooked puts it farther in the woods. Harvey Pennick mentioned that before. I would rate the sole a 9 out of 10. I would probably rather see the grip than the sole though.

Cleveland may actually have hit a home run with this one. After the disastrous Hi-Bore and Mediocre Monster, it’s good to see them finally come up with something worthy of replacing the venerable, but rather Long in the tooth, “Launcher”.

Looks solid and tour like. If they could give it a solid feeling with an old style click when you crush it they’d seal the deal. Would like to see a tour club come out with just options for ” real” shafts and nit the dumbed down versions. Reminds me a little of the old tailor-made 282 head that is still a cult classic.

This looks great. I would like to see the face paint to be strong and not wear off after a while. The black coatings tend to wear badly and ruins it. It also makes it harder to sell later on if the face looks bashed in. Great to see that it will have more loft options than 9, 10 and 12deg. I would like it to have an awesome smash factor off the face and a smart selection of shaft offerings, also.

I love the look! Hopefully it’s low spin, with “normal” shaft options, not just light. Even though the shafts aren’t the real deal, I like how Titleist has multiple stock options that cover the spectrum of spin, launch, and even weight. Going just light weight with the recent Cleveland drivers cut a big segment of golfers out of even trying a great driver, as evidenced by what Keegan Bradley did with his. Come on Cleveland, give all of us a shot at your driver again!

Looks like a driver that people might actually like to hit considering it doesnt have a super scoop to it and doesnt seem like some over night gimmick that Cleveland came up with like this whole weight thing. It appears that Cleveland has finally gotten the message that if it looks some what good, people will buy it no matter what the hell it costs! Took a play out of TM’s book that time huh?

please no more light weight garbage for old men and females. The swing faster stuff just makes people less consistent. If you cant hit the center of the clubface at a slower speed the last thing you need to do is swing faster with a lighter club

Im going 10 for exterior. Its a good looking clubhead.

Please no 1974 Spalding Executive crown…The concept is great on paper, but looks, feel and sound are the core values to a driver. Again, an adjustable club is kind of the trend right now and maybe a unique sound would be the ear catching ticket in today’s market.

I think that the appearance is a solid 9/10. Hopefully they don’t add much to the crown in terms of graphics.

Are they still pimping the lightness as a selling point, or would that be non-tour. Light didn’t seem to really drive sales…

Looks badass–will really appeal to the bomb and gouge crowd. From below it looks a little ADAMS-like. I’d definitely game one, hope it’s got a 46″ “S” RIP beta or KUA shaft available–remember, the shaft is the engine!!!

I like the simplicity of it . Couple things , as a club fitter we need a driver that absolutly kills spin off a golf ball !!! Personally I would love to see an alignment feature as follows , you can leave the crown in a gloss black finish but I would make some egg shell finish matte black alignment features that you can square up to the golf ball and line up similar to a putter and line on golf ball theory . With the subtle finish differences this can be accomplished maintaining a stealth look . I wish I could draw it on here to share my idea.. Congrats on a big win !!
