Insert or No-Insert?

Question: Insert or no insert in your putters?  Which do you prefer?

Well…for most of you out there…one of the first things you think about when the name Odyssey putters comes to mind is the insert.  Actually they started plopping them into their putters “way back in 1999….they called it a “Stronomic Insert”  But the material actually got its start back in 1991 when they made an entire mallet putter from the elastomer material.  And there is a very interesting story behind how it got the name “Stronomic”…which by the way would surprise most golfers but not people in the marketing industry.  I laughed when I first heard it and still do to this day.

...back to the putters

Like I said most of you think inserts when you think Odyssey…well that is changing.  Most likely to keep the Tour players happy and many of the type of golfers who frequent sites like MGS.  Their 2012 line of top-shelf putters will have NO insert…called the ProType Series.  You might have heard about them before…we showed off a few of the models last year.  Well this year they are re-introducing the line with a couple changes.  I predicted last year would be the year of customization and personalization and it is looking like 2012 will be more of the same.  This year you will be able to:

Custom Options:

  • Custom Paintfill
  • Custom Grip (6 choices)

Details:

  • Price $269.00 (tough price point to compete in)
  • Available 2/17/2012
  • No insert
  • ahhh…finally NO WINN GRIPS
  • 1025 Carbon Steel

I don’t really need handstamps and all this stuff.
The only thing that matters is that I can make as many putts as possible.
Odyssey just offers very good performing putters for years.
They simply work, no need for gimmicks like handstamps and funky paintfill and grip colors actually – just ask Luke Donald, Steve Stricker, KJ Choi, Ian Poulter (Odyssey) or Martin Kaymer, Lee Westwood, Webb Simpson, Miguel Angel Jiminez (Ping) and others. They win Tour events with stock putters.
And the pricing isn’t much different to other brands (Scotty Cameron, Taylor Made Kia Ma, Ping Redwood & Anser Milled etc.), so I can’t complain about it.
Nothing wrong with the PT line. Nice putters and I’m sure the work very well.

I don’t roll a china made putter either, just think its classless to essentially post an ad for another manufacturer on a product’s review page.

I am 100% with Jordan. Meh is all I can say.

For that price i’ll get properly fitted into an answer or order a Scotty.

Odyssey is cheap stuff in the end.

Can’t beat them when they are $78.88 on clearance, but otherwise overpriced IMO. Their black series and this series are nothing special.

Douchey move there Jordan. I for one will now never consider a 350 putter because of that…

I have no affiliation with 350, just satisfied customer. But if you want to waste money on a mass produced (China) putter that’s literally probably 100-150 overpriced that’s your problem.

The fact that you used the phrase “OUR std price” makes me pretty sure that you work for them and are trying to backpedal out of being called out on it. Nothing wrong with it, if you’re confident in your product, stand behind it.

I do like the clean simple look and the dark color. All they have to do now is get several pros playing them and they just might have something.
