VOKEY SM4 Wedge Spotted!

The new 2012 Vokey SM4 Wedges was spotted out in the wild….notice any differences?  Well not to many to be honest.

The new 2012 SM4 Vokey pictured below is the satin chrome finish which replaces the tour chrome.  They will also be available in  black nickel and oil can finishes.   Also the grooves are little sharper and they added a couple grooves so that they could maximize spin.

Any guesses what the SM4 stands for?

Looks like Vokey has a pretty good thing going with the SM4, looks like a well thought out design, like the hardened groove idea because the previous versions of the spin milled wedge did NOT hold up well at all to very much practice. The sole grind options are nice and you can get a KBS Tour shaft or a Nippon shaft installed with NO up charge according to the Titleist website.. Kudos to Titleist for that. All that said, I still like forged better than cast. Cast clubs are better than they used to be but they still can’t quite match the feel of a forged club. I believe it is also cheaper to manufacture cast clubs than forged. The SM4 are retailing for $129.95 at most places I believe.

MeexJNR if you can’t spin a CG15 you have more issues then just the wedge you’re using. Honestly, Love the Irony hit everything right on the spot. Wake up people Vokeys are the best wedge design in golf bar none.

If you don’t want to play with the best equipment don’t play Titleist right now in my bag I have a 54 and 60 degree vokes C-C my (can you bounce bounce JIZZZ’) 710.MB’s 909 woods and hybrids and the 910 driver. The only thing that I don’t use is a cameron putter I do Like my odyssey putter feel’s so much softer then any camerons but other then that play titleist. Also Titleist does by far the best job of protecting people from counterfeits.

I’m a fan of the Vokey. Until I find something better of course!.

They don’t seem to reinvent the wheel, would need a demo but in no need of a new wedge right now. Mizuno is also an option, and would love to demo miura, but in Australia possibly a little difficult

Seems like everyone hates on titleist vokey’s, but I can understand why. Titleist dominates the ball and player’s iron markets, not to mention the Scotty Cameron following. But as a relatively non pro-titleist guy I think the vokey’s have great feel and put loads of spin on the ball, even for mid-high handicappers.

Are Vokey tour wedges cast? I can not imagine

Yes. Manufacturing advancements have made it so you can cast a club and make it “feel” softer than a forged club. Pretty sure Vokeys use 304 which is buttery soft and easy to bend – same as Wishon wedges. The #1 advantage of forging a club these days is so you can market it as “Forged.”

I really think Vokeys are fantastic wedges. True, they may not be a new innovation, they may be cluttered, they may not be your favorite. I love them. They work for me.

I dont understand that Titleist still stick with Cast Iron wedges when all their other top end products are forged. I agree with It’s me, the round leading edge is not great and the cast feel is not up to the level of other Titleist irons. That is why I play Mizuno, the wedges are forged and the design classic. I also play Miura wedges, yes they are expensive but the sold grind and the leading edge is fantastic.

      Adam,
Spin milling a wedge isn’t done to add spin. The spin milled portion is done on cast wedges so the face surface is flat. When the head is cast the face doesn’t always come out perfectly flat, so they they mill it. A few years ago Vokey started making the milling pattern noticeable to the naked eye and twisted the marketing terms. People all over think it’s done to add spin. It’s not and doesn’t.

Well that is an M grind on a 54*, which is something they’ve only offered in the TVD and special grinds plus only 58-64* lofts, so I’m guessing that the M in SM4 stands for the grind? These look good, and are similar to the Sonartec grinds that were amazing wedges. Just might have to give Vokey another shot if these are going to retail at $119!

The sole grind looks nice, but I can’t stand the BV wings logo and the rounded leading edge.
They have four logo variations all on the back. Too cluttered. If it wasn’t for the name recognition/marketing I’d think the wedges look like cheap Wallmart items.

gonna go out on a limb and say SPIN MILLED 4. The 4 is a change in the spin milling process that they made to conform with new groove rules?
