SNEAK PEEK! – 2013 Callaway X Forged Irons

#FiveYearWar

There’s a war going on in the golf industry!

Ok…well not really…cause last time I checked in a real war both sides usually need to know that they’re involved for it to be an actual war.  And secondly, if there was, wouldn’t consumers actually know about it?  I mean did you even know there was one going on? Well Callaway is damn sure hoping and betting you and more importantly Taylormade will know about it pretty soon.  Because, in this case the “Callaway/Taylormade War” was actually initiated by Callaway, they have actually coined the name on their Twitter account as the #FiveYearWar.  Look it up, I’m not joking.

And while they didn’t call Taylormade out as who they will be attacking, it’s pretty obvious where their weapons will be aimed.  Yeah, Callaway’s PR and marketing guys will tell you a story about the #FiveYearWar being a mission to change the look and feel of Callaway and about how they want to transform consumers impression regarding where they are headed over the next five years.  And all of this is true, but the end result of this war is about one thing:  Taking over Taylormade as the #1 Golf Equipment Company in the Industry…PERIOD!

1st Warning Shot & Counter Attack

And while they didn’t even know they were involved, earlier this morning, Taylormade fired a major warning shot across Callaway’s bow…letting them know that they aren’t messing around in this fictitious war.  The missile Taylormade fired happened to be called RocketBladez. It was their big iron announcement this year, well so far.  And like most warning shots, the other party involved is often left with two choices: (1) put your tail between your legs and proclaim your opponent as the winner (2) or fight back.

Callaway decided to fight back and launch a counter attack of their own just hours after the warning shot,  by releasing info about their newest iron.  Their missile (aka: iron) is called the 2013 Callaway X Forged. And while they’re in different categories, Taylormade’s in “Game Improvement” & Callaway’s in “Players Iron”.  I think it was made pretty clear from those at Callaway that they think their new missles out shine Taylormade’s.  But we will leave that up to you guys and gals.

Tell Callaway Your Thoughts On Their Irons

Like we always tell you the guys at Callaway and other companies are listening to what you have to say.  How do we know, let’s just say we are pretty good at this espionage thing.  So let them know how you feel about their new irons and their #FiveYearWar.

It is interesting that Callaway and TaylorMade fight it out for the mass market while Mizuno, Titleist and Ping, to some extent, are aimed at the better player. These irons from Callaway are not aimed at TM, but at improving their image as a quality manufacturer that can produce a club for the better player. TM’s reputation as a manufacturer of “player’s” irons is non-existent. Most better players look to Mizuno, Muira or Titleist for their irons. At the moment, TM is winning the revenue battle, but may lose the war as their reputation for quality equipment deteriates under the weight of garbage like the RocketBlades in both the “everyman’s” version and supposedly “better player” version

Taylormade is iron hype. Nothing great at all. Not to sure about the extra grooves and spin on these new X Forged. I think Titleist irons are better than both companies. Maybe Ping is better in irons than Callaway or Taylormade. Mizuno for sure is!

Although not a fan of either Callaway or Taylormade, Callaways new forged irons are good looking and come with top notch shafts. TaylorMade’s Rocketballs “Blade” irons are not in the same league with Callaway. HOPEFULLY, THEY PERFORM BETTER THAN THEY LOOK. TaylorMade needs to bring their blade offerings up to the level of their woods. The old adage that form follows function does not hold sway if the user can’t stand the look of the clubs at address.

Points to Cally on this one if we are talking about the RB tour irons as competition. In any case this Cally offering hints that they are bringing their A-game on the entire line of clubs this coming season. I am very interested to see what might be coming. Perhaps the Legacy line will get more press? I’d at least like to se a more coherent package of the entire line. So you know what you want to get.

In the 50’s True Temper introduced the “ROCKET SHAFT” Hmmm “ROCKET Shaft”. Interesting. Weren’t we led to believe TaylorMade and NASA owned the word Rocket. Apparently it’s been used before in golf.

Golf is not about the game of golf anymore – it’s about market share, margins, profit, Golf Course Management companies competing for the same courses, all trying to leverage their brand to get what they want: $$$ Nothing new about that.

Year after year we’ve been told “with this new and improved technology in this driver you will hit the ball 10, 12, 14 yards further, your miss-hits will be straighter and if you make this little adjustment to your club you won’t have to change your swing. With this new dimple design this ball does this and that ball does that… and the beat goes on.

“Buy this, buy that, buy these… and you’ll be able to do this better than the other guy.

These claims are nothing new – In the 50’s Spalding’s ads stated “You’ll reduce your handicap by “one-third” with our new advanced club technology “Synchro-Dyned”

In the 1920’s Macgregor advertised their clubs were “Harmonized in Mathematical Relationship”

Wilson claimed “Only Wilson puts in a plug for more distance”

There are great designers in these R&D departments – but there are an army of marketing people thinking up the next “buzz word or color” to get you to open your wallet. And the spiffs, whew, the spiffs…

Companies are sold, employees go to the competition and then return (they know who they are), CEO’s come and go… .

All are great products – but it’s exhausting keeping up with the latest and greatest. Can’t we all just enjoy the game of golf without being pressured to “pay for a better game”?

For years now Callaway has made far Superior products than TM. However TM has won the war due to their superior marketing campaigns. The driver category, forged irons, and wedges by far are areas that shine for Callaway. With Cally’s new CEO and marketing director, formerly TM’s, they may be able to successfully wage this war. Only time will tell.

Callaway vs. Taylor Made. Callaway has the quality, Taylor Made has the hype, the pizzaz, the “in your face”, The big loud Tour show. As a clubmaker and repairman I give the whole edge to Callaway, their product has always been solid, well made, and quietly going about the business of making good, solid, attractive Clubs.

Talylor Made pumps a lot of clubs out, not bad clubs, but not great. They advertse everywhere and if you don’t play them you are nothing. Fact is quality is not that hot, I reset at least one iron head a week in my shop. that produce them fast and use as little epoxy as they can to hold the heads on and the result is they come loose. As far as the rest, TM does not hold up to the hype and loud marketing. It shows though that money talks.

Me? I will stick with Wilson, very good stuff along with Callawau.

Callaway is betting on similar technology that they have used before, although the pxi shaft is nice (I hit it on new Mizuno M-H4). Taylomade, however, is movng forward in technology. The X forged looks nice, but as others said, a much smaller niche of players. Taylormade is going to get more attention and A LOT more sales from both Rocketbladez and Rocketbladez Tour. They are definitely worth a demo. New technology always interests a golfer. It’s legal to play with so it doesn’t matter what’s under the hood. The main this is that it feels good and gets great results. I’M SURE THE TOCKETBLADEZ WILL DO JUST THAT.

My Mizuno bias aside, these are beautifully designed and very solid looking heads. I want to look into my bag and see a lineup of irons that look as if their maker was focussed on the form/function balance. But Callaway’s got me feeling like I almost don’t care how they function if they’re going to look that good!

Feb 1st the Taylor Player irons come out. Right after the PGA Show. By that time Callaway’s release will be forgotten about.. The buzz from the PGA Show will help TM selll thru in the spring. Callaway may have released these irons a bit early. I think they are going for holiday sales(smart) Callaway needs some buzz. 2013 is a make or break year at Callaway.

Personally I will take my MP-59’s

Yep, have to agree that I love the clean look of these. I think it’s important to remember re the ‘war’ (as others have stated) that the TM RBladez and Callaway’s new X Forged irons are not in the same dcategory, so unless TM is also hoping to entice ‘players’ players to GI clubs (and they probably will get some who will) then these clubs are not ‘directly’ at war with eachother.
I think the real test will be to see how the Tour version of the RBladez goes compared with the new X Forged’s. For me, the X Forged irons certainly win the looks battle compared to the Tour version of the RBladez.

Honestly, I don’t understand why someone would buy this set over the X-Forged made in 2007 or 2009. Obviously the difference is new vs. used… but in terms of design they nailed it on the first try and have just been messing them up ever since.

Well for one, these irons are within the USGA groove rules. (but thats a general new iron statement) Have you hit the current X-forged irons? Because it isn’t even comparable in my opinion to the older models. Now justifying buying the new vs current X-forged irons would be a tough task.

If this is the first battle of the new model year between Callaway & TM – Callaway won – beautiful looking irons! Not a big fan of large top lines on the TM product or the strengthening of lofts and lengthening of the shaft to claim more distance. Guess I’m “old school”

Beautiful looking model, but I think that if Callaway is competing with TM, it would be touting irons like the RAZR HL or prior iterations such as the Diablo Edge R irons, as that is the area where TM is always promoting clubs. Their slogan is “freakishly long”, so this model isn’t really aimed at TM’s main sellers. Clubs like the RAZR HL or the Diablo Edge R irons would probably hit more similarly to TM’s game improvement irons, as they also have stronger lofts and hit the ball high, with wide soles and low C.O.G.
Seems like Callaway is aiming more at Mizuno with this particular iron model.

I want so bad! That is the best looking iron I’ve seen in a while (since the MP-32).
I was very close to getting the razr forged irons, but ended up getting the Mizuno MP-63’s instead. I really couldn’t notice any difference between them in feel or performance but I could get the Mizuno’s for $100 cheaper. If they had been the same price I probably would have gone the razrs (I have and love my Razr Hawk driver), but they were just too expensive. I hope they don’t make these more expensive than their direct competition as well.

We’ll have to see with the hit test but I do want to get my hands on these.

Excellent choice by Mr. Brewer on high to decree no Uniflex shafts for these and then went the full distance and put one of the two hottest irons shafts in as stock (IMO, also the better choice over C Tapers for those who might by off the rack).

      +5 Callaway, +5.

Just on looks they beat all other sets out there. For the record, I think the RocketBladz are ugly, though I’m intrigued with the long iron tech.

      My point goes to Callaway – very interested into these irons + they match their MB’s design-wise + 1025 + R.Cleveland =winner
TM is for the masses, I just hope there is some truth to their claims – interested into the review of the Tour version of the bladez what the distance benefits are in comparisson to other clubs, cause on their site they only have distance gains for the regular version vs. other companies.

I would be surprised if the USGA and R & A folks aren’t starting to get kind of twitchy on the subject of irons that spring the ball off of the face like fairway clubs. Would rather put my faith (and $$) in traditional iron designs, like these new Callaways, that manipulate mass properties (dispersion, CG placement) to get desired ball flight characteristics, rather than face flex.

Irons have to adhere to the same core ru;es as any other club. Already been looked at. It is now that that the OEMs are looking at thinner faces in irons that produce the trampoline effect of drivers.

First iron I’ve liked from Callaway in a while, but if they’re fighting TM, they are doing it in an area where IMO TM doesn’t try very hard. The TM TP irons are some of the worst forgings I’ve tried.

These, with 1025 carbon steel, are going to be very sweet to hit if you can play them.
