2013 Taylormade RocketFuel Driver?

Love’em or Hate’em

Love’em or hate’em….Taylormade Golf is King right now.  And love’it or hate’it….the name RocketBallz is on the tip of every golfers tongues in 2012.  If we were to have polled MGS readers before the launch of the RocketBallz line I would guess between 75-90% of you would have said the name was a terrible mistake (we heard from a lot of you in our inbox saying it was).  Take the same poll with marketing experts and the numbers would have most likely been reversed…75-90% thinking Taylormade hit it out of the park with the RocketBallz name.

POLL: RocketBallz (vs) RocketFuel

That brings me to today.  And the name RocketFuel!  What is RocketFuel?  Well…Taylormade just put in a trademark application (shown below) for this new name.  So I’m guessing they think RocketFuel is even better than RocketBallz.

But…that’s where you guys come in.  Since we didn’t poll you guys last time to get your opinions on the RocketBallz name we thought it would be a good idea this time around.  So…what do you think about the name RocketFuel?  Is it a good name for a golf club?  Is it better than the RocketBallz name?   You tell us…and well Taylormade…because I know they are reading this ;)

Just looking at the colours you have used for “Rocket Fuel” would it be a educated guess that the colour threme will be the purple they have started rolling out on the tour bags. Seems like TM new colour brand for 2013 if you ask me.

I also like the name RocketLauncher, and the ball should be just plain space balls. Its like, I’m going to use my rocket launcher to hit sum space balls. I would be using my Fujikura 59gram Orbit shaft or my low launching Aldila galaxy shaft.

Let’s try “RocketLauncher” instead of R——FUEL since the golfer will supply the fuel for the spaceshot if all else is clearly superior… what do you think?! s/N

i could personally see the rocketfuel name being attached to the equivilent of the burner series of golf balls, or they just needed someting that Y.E. could pronounce correctly in a commercial

I think rocket fuel has the same potential to be remembered as rocketbalz so it will work just as well. I still do prefer rocketbalz slightly more as it relates to golf a little more. Either way it won’t make much of a difference. I must admit that my first reaction to rocketbalz as a name was negative but it didn’t take long for me to start using it in everyday golfing conversation and rather than cringing at the sound of it enjoying how it rolls of the tounge. It certainly is easier to say than r11s etc. Far be it from me to question the boffins at TM, they certainly know what they are doing. For what it’s worth that is my 2 cents worth.

Whatever the case Fuel is much more advanced technology than Ballz. Don’t believe me? In a few months when they come out with it, all you Rocketballzer’s will be playing with inferior technology leaving mounds of yardage on the table. Disregard that silly little governing body called the USGA and the limits they’ve placed on head size and spring like effect across the face that have been in place for 10 years. I’m confident Taylormade will have Justin Rose tell you so (who cares if he is still using his original and inferior R11). It’ll be true. More true because it will come with a white crown with a little Rocketship for a lineup aid (except the TP version). The “science” of white just got a rocket ship added to it.

I think RocketBallz is far more effective for marketing. I predict it will sell far fewer models than the RBZ. I was in the bag room the other day at one club I go to a lot and bags were just overflowing with them. They were everywhere.

I think that it should just be Rocketz. Simple, easy, and they can keep this name just as long as the R series. Then they can change it to RZ1, RZ2, RZ3, etc. It’s never too late to start with the numbers.

How bout RocketLauncher (maybe too similar to Cleaveland’s trademark), RocketBallz Dual (a pair is always nice), RocketBallz SuperMax (who wouldn’t want that?)….

I’m waiting for the next new driver/3 wood to come out in the summer so the RBZ goes down in price so i can pick one up cheap =)

Don’t like RocketBallz, although I have some clubs, Rocketfuel is even worse very tenuous link to golf and poor image connotation. I like something like Rocketfly or Rocketflight if they insist on Rocket. For something completely different what about Firefly?

At this point they can call it Szetty Ballz and get away with it. everyone in their right mind said “rocketballs????? come on???” they took the original public reaction had the tour guys make a commercial saying the same thing as everyone else and smacked us all inthe face with it. then when you hit th eclub because of the lure and see wha tit’s all about SOLD!!!!!! They’re adding something to the head to create more distance no doubt but no what DJ is going to be hitting his driver 400 with roll and his 3 wood 335…new USGA rule if you carry RBZ/RBF then you are limited to only 10 clubs instead of 14. Considering the change in rules constantly and the annual struggle between rules and the technology of the game the USGA has to do something???? no?????

I’ve been in marketing for more than 15 years and I can promise you it will be a profitable name for Taylormade. Rocketballz didn’t work because it was a good name, it worked because it was sold to us by the best marketing company in golf. I hear people say all the time how stupid they think a commercials are, but it’s those commercials that people remember. Marketing isn’t about giving something the proper name, it’s about making something stick in your head.

Bingo! Absolutely correct David — the name has to be memorable, and Rocketballz – and it’s baby brother RBZ – are more than memorable. What’s the old saying? – Donn’t care what you say, just spell the name right! TM has people talking about their stuff more than any other company in the business. When you combine excellent marketing with a solid product – well, it won’t be much fun for the other guys…

Maybe they are going to sell a line of shaft upgrades. That way you can add new “fuel” to your driver with a hot shaft. Or maybe it is their new line of training aids to add fuel to the rocket that way.

I too thought energy drink at first.

After Ballz, Fuel is quite a tame option. I was hoping for Rocketballs Deep!

I’m telling you now, as the banter went back and forth in the forum, go head to head with Cobra’s orange and match it up with some crazy day glow blue and call it the Blue Ballz. Your frustration with your old driver has never been greater, Taylormade BlueBallz. It sells itself. Although I can’t remember who said it, think it was RR or RB7, give it a classic finish and call it the Taylormade BrassBallz. As far as RocketFuel, I’d pass. I’d rather see RBZ Mach 2 or RBZ 2.0 than to attach Fuel to it. Actually, one last though, RBZ AfterBurner. Combine the lines and stick with the shuttle launch theme. (Hey TMAG, I want a royalty check if this one gets picked up or at least a new 3wood. I know you guys are reading this.)

Yeah, RocketFuel makes far more sense to integrate as a golf ball to go with the Rocket theme. FYI, while they can register the trademark for a golf club, as long as the name is compatible with the original filing, they could still use it for a ball, shaft, or anything related to the original filing.

I thought Rocketballz was a slightly silly name but didn’t get worked up about it. Clearly the clubs were effective and they sold like crazy so the name worked. I don’t know that Rocketfuel is as effective as Rocketballz.

Personally the name of club or its appearance doesn’t effect me very much. I care completely about whether it performs for me. I’d play wedge called “Sissy Petunias” with flowers and kittens engraved on it if I thought it would help my chipping. Besides, there is always lead tape. – Nevin

Maybe TM is expanding into the energy drinks/snacks market? Or perhaps it’s a material inserted into clubs to add another million yards?

I wonder if TM is going to go after the Hammer-X with it’s add featuring gratuitous amounts of rocketz? :)

Oh man…I’m abstaining from the vote. The question shouldn’t be good vs. bad…it all boils down to effective (from a marketing perspective). And while I’m guessing most wouldn’t admit it publicly, there are probably half a dozen marketing people from other companies wishing they had thought up RocketBallz.

RocketFuel…not sure it will have the same impact as the original, but I suppose it’s not the worst way to go.
