      This year… nothing.

Things that dramatically changed my game is a pretty short list.

1997: Big Bertha Heavenwood. I used that thing everywhere for every kind of shot.
1999: TM Supersteel Woods. Loved these so much I didn’t use a driver till 2007. Wish I had kept them, they would be like super hybrids now.
      2003? Original Cra-Zee PING putter. Suddenly… I could put!
2007: Cleveland Hibore XL driver. Suddenly… I could drive straight and reach 200 yards.
2008: Bobby Jones Player Hybrids. My introduction to what a hybrid could really do. Still amazing. Still in my back up bag. They are short on distance, but AAA performance everywhere else.
2010: Cleveland Niblicks. A short game revolution- started to break 100 regularly with these.

After that… nothing really. Special mention to the Cleveland Custom XL I guess. Straight and over 230 yards. But that was last year and not really a ‘game changer’

I have tons of newer equipement but my favorite addition over the past two seasons would have to be a range finder (eyes are useless beyond 100 plus yrds now), recoil shafts (great for tendonitise,) and good fresh gloves.
Hard to say what was best addition. scoring apps have done wonders as well, when they don’t crap out. Oddly enough, one of my most surprising additions has been a simple tee, plastic, that only goes in a set amount. It takes huge variables out of the driving game.

Got a Titleist Vokey SM4 52 Degree Wedge for a gap wedge, this is a great club, and a Titleist 913Fd 15 deg. fairway wood from the demo barrel at G-smith. Good club, but the shaft isn’t for me. A hook machine.

Typical me, buying closeout and stuff from the demo barrel.

Got a shaft spiner thing and this is cool because this winter I am going to spine all of my irons and fix all of those ferrules that aren’t where they are supposed to be anymore. Might try a graphite shaft in one of my long irons. (yea, I still got them) Did my 7 iron already and it feels great. We do stuff like this in the north in the winter to make ourselves feel better.

In the final days of our Indian summer, I have discovered the Martini tee, wow, could a tee really make that big of a difference. Hit 2 absolute smokers today with that tee. Ever hit a ball so good that you are afraid to hit another one because it just can’t be that good again? (like your first love)

If I could only find a Martini putter. Actually it is the reverse, my putting makes me want to drink Martinis.

Cally X2Hot 2 Deep for me — use it off the tee when I lose my driver swing — it’s a beast! Also picked up a set of 4 yr old Srizon Z-TX irons on eBay that helped me gain more confidence in my iron game – very sweet sticks! They have KBS Tour shafts, and I did fall in love with those after playing with PX 5.5’s for the past few years.

      1. I ditched my TaylorMade RBZ Stage 2 Tour driver this season in favor of the Cleveland Classic XL Custom after hitting a few balls with one. I immediately noticed a tighter dispersion with a distance gain of about 5 yards on average. I am consistently hitting a high fade which is my preferred drive shape, out there about 275 (275 carry). This driver has been such an improvement for my game as I can hit more fairways with it, I average about 9 a round now – up from 7 for the past 2 seasons with the RBZ. All my friends make fun of me for hitting a Cleveland driver (saying those are clubs for “old men”…) until they hit it themselves. The best feature of the driver is the feel/sound. It is like butter, almost mute, like you can’t even tell you are hitting the ball. I can’t really describe it – you have to experience it for yourself. But I find myself swinging through the ball more because I am not anticipating the contact – thus I end up finishing my swing better.

      2. I have always played multilayer urethane covered balls, but I was given a sleeve of the new Nike One RZN-X balls at a club tournament this summer. I loved them. I shot my best round of the year that day (73) and finished 3rd in the tourney. I recommend these balls to any 5-10 handicapper. The first thing you will notice is how much longer they are than other tour balls. I usually play the TM Lethal or ProV1x – this ball is 5-10 yards longer than those. And it flies straighter due to the firmer cover which many better players may not like – but if you miss a lot of fairways and greens this ball will help with that without sacrificing too much of that shot-stopping spin. The ball obviously spins less than urethane covered balls, but on full shots you really can’t tell too much difference, unless you have a really low ball flight then it tends to hop once or twice before stopping. In the short game – chipping, pitching, bunker shots – it does roll out a bit more which takes a couple rounds to get used to. But it is seriously worth trying the switch.

I can’t complain, my handicap has gone down 2 strokes this season (from a 9 to a 7) and I’ve had more rounds in the 70s this year and made more birdies this year than ever before. I haven’t played more or practiced more than in the past, so I only attribute this improvement to these 2 changes in my equipment. They are the only changes I made this season (driver and ball) and that can’t be just a coincidence.

Shafts have changed my game. Recoils in my irons. ilima in my 3 wood.(on sale!!). The ilima is the best shaft I have ever hit in any club. And elements chrome in my driver is tops too. (on sale!) Deadly straight, low spin, smooth as butter. tight as a drum.

Mizuno MP-15 Irons. These are deadly accurate, consistent, and an absolute joy to play. More forgiving than the 0-8 rating Mizuno gave them. I am a 12 HCP and have no issues at all. Be sure to get fitted for the right shaft using Mizuno’s fitting system.

This year I revamped almost my whole bag as I was playing a whole bag of cheap clubs from a discount sale. Not that they were bad but I started to get serious about this game and wanted something better. I got new PP9003s and the Bio Cell driver and hybrid. The PPs are fantastic but I feel the Bio Cell edges it out a little. My errant tee shots have lessened tremendously and it’s actually fun to pull out the driver now compared to the past.

The non physical thing that improved my game the most was my coach. I finally found one I can stick with for the long run and he has revamped my swing for the better. Nowadays it’s no longer with apprehension when I play the game. It’s with confidence and I actually scored a birdie last month and look forward to more.

Call me old school or cheap but i bought a UST Proforce V2 shaft for the hell of it. Yes you can still buy them new. I don’t think for that price there is a better shaft out there. I probably could of bought that over my Speeder and saved money and been just as happy. Awesome shaft!

Yep those shafts are good use to live by them. I’ve noticed the tour green is comparable and newer tech so I’ve moved on to those but the proforce are awesome.

I’m a shaft whore and I agree. I’ve bought a lot of shafts that cost as much as 10 times what one can buy the V2 for , and the difference in performance is negligible.

For me it was bagging a set of SCOR wedges. 50, 54 and 58 degree wedges with True Temper Spinner Shafts. Wedge Flex on the 54 and 58, Wedge + flex on the 50, because I use it for full shots at 125 yards out. These wedges have changed my short game.

Speaking of game changers, what about negative changes. I bought an adjustable Ketsch putter (based on the review here) that I simply cannot putt with. The improvements my new G25 irons and G30 fairway wood gave were negated by my bad putting.

The answer for me is… Walking. That’s right, was no equipment ,but walking help me drop HC from 5 to a 2. I use a pull cart, and now I dont feel rushed to the next shot like when I used a golf cart.

I’m actually looking for those electric push carts for next season. I actually walked an 18 with my cart bag on my shoulder and we have quite a few inclined holes where I play lol

I’ve seen some good ones at ebay, electric remote carts. That’s why I dont carry/walk with my bag even though its light weight, no need to hurt a shoulders or pull a back muscle. The walk will be great for your health too.

I looked also, just out of my price range. I’m trying to find something used. I didn’t really have a choice as the club is closed for the season and everything’s locked up. The only thing that’s going to stop me is snow lol. I might just get a regular one instead. I quit playing ice hockey (was a goalie playing twice a week) so really need to do something else to keep in shape.

After using pull carts and power carts all my life I switched this year to a 3 wheeled push cart. Love it. It’s easier to manipulate with less effort than my old pull cart and the new ones have card holders, drink holders, mesh bags for head covers or quickly accessible rain suits and phone compartments…Great investment that speeds up play considerably.
