2016 Most Wanted Golf Course – South Carolina

Where the Northeast Hides from Winter

South Carolina ranks just outside the Top 10 in total number of golf courses, but when you consider that the state is, in terms of land mass, only the 40th largest (or 11th smallest – not counting DC), it’s hard not to be impressed by the course density.

As golfers would likely expect, a healthy number of those courses, including several from our Top 10, are jammed into the Myrtle Beach area. We must also point out that many of the state’s premier golf destinations are found farther to the south. Kiawah Island and Harbour Town (you may have seen them on TV) should not be overlooked by anyone looking to escape a brutal winter, or simply enjoy a world class round of golf.

With so many courses in such a small area, how do you know which South Carolina golf courses are worth your time? To find out, we turned to TheGrint and to real golfers just like you.

About Our Rankings

To generate our rankings, we used data from TheGrint, a golf handicap and stat tracking service that also allows golfers to rate the courses they play. Here are the pertinent details:

  • Ranking derived from over 200,000 golf course reviews
  • Only reviews from the last 365 days are considered
  • A course must have a minimum of 30 reviews is required in order to qualify for ranking

Nearly every aspect of a golf course review is subjective and there’s always going to be a difference of opinion, so healthy (and hopefully polite) debate is to be expected.

Not even close. Sage Valley is one of the best courses in the country. Most of the best courses are in the Upstate, not that embarrassing stretch of coast called Myrtle Beach. Best courses – Sage Valley, Cliffs At Glassy, Cliffs Vineyard, Palmetto Club, Greenville CC (Chanticleer), Thornblade CC.

Glen Dornach, top 10 in SC, that’s delusional in my opinion.
I live in Surfside Beach, quite near these “Top Ten” courses.
While I have a personal bias towards Caledonia, they deserve to be #1public.

The TPC/Myrtle Beach deserves the #10 spot.
      I’ve played both G/D and TPC a # of times…

      Tomorrow playing Kings North.
Blackmoor was mentioned – wearing their hat as I type.
      Nice course.
One more that should have been considered, The River Club in Pawleys Island.
Both the R/C & the TPC groom to a PGA level.

Palmetto Golf Club is easily in the top ten. Personally, I think it might be in the top 3.

I’ve played 9 of the 10 and am a local in the Myrtle area. Ask any local the best golf course in Myrtle and it is either Dunes or Caledonia. How is Dunes Club not on the list??? TPC is also in the conversation at the top shocked it was left off.

Dunes is a Private course and when it is open there’s no where to leave a review.. This list is compiled of 30 reviews.. Since the Dunes has no reviews it’s not on the list.. I’m a local also and you’re 100% correct it is right there with Caldonia if not ahead.. I’m playing the Dunes mid Sept for a Corporate Tourney and I’m already losing sleep thinking about it, love that course!!

Played 1,3,6,7,8,10. Can’t argue with the choices. We are fortunate to have so many great courses in the Carolinas. Moorland and the Witch are worth a try.

I’ve played most all of them. It’s a good list. Blackmoor is another one I’ve really enjoyed. Caledonia has always been a favorite.

Sage Valley… #1, easily. good luck getting a tee time. you can play if you participate in their Dollars for Scholars event. I think it’s around $400 for 18.

One that is missing is the Dunes Club (Sister club to Grande Dunes Resort and Grand Dunes Members clubs). I would have it near the top and both it and the Members Club I would rank ahead of Grande Dunes.

I’ve played #1, #3, and #8. The order for these three is correct, and for once I agree on your #1 selection. Caledonia Golf & Fish Club is one of my all-time favs… anywhere.

I live in South Carolina and have played number 4, 8, and 9 and they are all great courses. Good list. I live 15 minutes from the Wild Dunes courses and love them both.
