The Metrics:

Just like with our Cart Bag Buyer’s Guide – we’re always fine tuning to ensure we deliver the best data. Continuing that trend, we’ve updated and refined this year to bring you the best buying advice we can.

*Weight is measured with straps and rain hood (factory weights do not include these or other accessories).
*Bags weighing more than 5lbs. are listed at 5lbs.

For 2016 we added more testers who put in even more hours of testing covering multiple days. They assessed more more metrics, creating more data and allowing us to boil down to the nuts and bolts of what makes the best bag for a range of users. We tested with two brands of push carts (Bag Boy Quad and Clicgear 3.5+).  Each bag was loaded with 14 clubs, 1 rain jacket, rain pants, 1 dozen golf balls, 20 tees, a laser, 6 pack of beer (if 6 fit), ball markers, two extra gloves, phone, keys, eyeglass wipes, Burt’s Bees Wax lip balm, and a Ken Kershaw pocket knife.

Testers abused clubs and bags: inserting and removing clubs repeatedly, pockets stuffed, zippers were torn back and forth, bags were loaded and unloaded from push carts. Pockets were counted and recounted, full length dividers were noted, and any special features were loaded into our metrics.

Because stand bags were built to be carried, every bag was fit onto each tester’s back while fully loaded with the previously mentioned clubs and extras.

    • Club Binding – Regardless of the number of dividers, this metric simply measures how much club grab/binding occurred when inserting and removing clubs from a bag. (10 possible points)
    • Storage – The number and usefulness of pockets. Types of storage, eg: external tee holder, insulated drink pocket, ball pocket. Ultimately, how functional is the available storage as a whole. (10 possible points)
    • Comfort – Measure of comfort with the bag fully loaded and carried on each tester’s back. (10 possible points)
    • Adjustment – Ease of strap adjustment. Is the range of adjustment robust enough to allow the bag to fit a variety of golfers? (10 possible points)
    • Durability – Testers examined each bag’s stitching, sturdiness, build quality and overall construction to determine the likely durability of a bag. (10 possible points)
    • Features – How feature-rich is a given bag. Do each of those features function as intended? Pockets, glove strips, towel loops, strap pass-through, velour pocket, cooler storage, grab handles… (10 possible points)
    • Stability – Tested with the bag fully loaded and legs extended. (10 possible points)
    • Top Grab Handle – How easy is it to use – is there enough space for someone with larger hands to fit their fingers between bag and clubs. Zero points awarded if not included. (10 possible points)
    • Zippers – How easily do zippers open and close. (10 possible points)
    • Recommended – Testers were asked to provide a score of 1-10 based on likelihood they would recommend a bag to a friend. (10 possible points)

Final grades were awarded based on total scores.

Best Overall and Runner up are our two highest overall scoring bags.

Lightweight stand bags never get past 5 pounds. These bags are designed to carry everything you need for a full round of golf and not too much more. They won’t leave you stranded, but they weren’t designed to pack your 6 pack and kitchen sink and thrown onto a cart every round. These bags should be designed with the ultimate bag carrying/walking purist in mind.

A Sunday bag allows a player to get out and play a pitch and putt course without needing to lug everything (14 clubs, 20 balls and so on) for a shorter course. Speed golfers also tend to embrace a more Sunday-style bag to allow them to carry everything they need and nothing more.

Golf’s Most Wanted Stand Bags

stand-winner-2016-1

Good: The best bag for 2016. Whether you’re the range hero, an occasional walker, a push cart user, or you always ride in a cart – this bag does it all and does it well. Everything is there.

Bad: It may be near impossible, but we’d love to see this bag drop to just below the 5 pound mark. Also, the strap adjustment could be simplified a little.

Notes: The straps are comfy, the bag carries the load well. It’s sturdy and durable, and everything works just like you’d want it to.

stand-buyers-guide-runnerup

Good: There was a LOT of thought put into this bag – everything you need is within reach while you walk down the fairway with the bag on your back. ALL 6 dividers are full length.

Bad: Not a ton of storage for cold drinks and just a bit too heavy to be a true carry bag.

Notes: In speaking with the designer for Projekt, we had high hopes going into testing, and the Kozmak didn’t let us down. It’s a bag that was well thought out. We would LOVE to see what Projekt might do with a true carry bag or a fully committed hybrid design.

Good: The best lightweight bag for 2016.  You want to play Pebble Beach or Bandon Dunes? You’ll likely find yourself carrying your bag on your back – and our recommendation would be taking the Callaway Hyperlite 3 – tipping the scales just over 4 pounds, this bag offers storage, comfort and function.

Bad: We’d love to see an improvement in the club binding department. That bag definitely wants to keep your clubs in place.

Notes: The walking golfer who wants to carry a bag on their shoulders will find the Callaway Hyperlite 3 does what they need. It may not do a ton more, but that’s the goal, to create a bag that doesn’t let you pack too much, but allows you to bring the essentials.

stand-buyers-sunday-winner

Good: Lightweight yet still providing enough storage to allow you to choose how many clubs you want to drag around. If you’re a 4 club guy or an 8 club guy, you won’t be left in a bind.  The best Sunday bag for 2016.

Bad: The bag may be a bit larger than some would want for a Sunday bag.

Notes: You like to parse things down on Sunday (I on the other hand want to bring extra beers). If you don’t want to bring a 6 pack, but still want to carry enough clubs to allow a variety of shots – this bag is your workhorse. Storage that will allow a rain jacket and some extra balls – yet a weight that makes you wonder why other larger bags aren’t this light!

I’ll never buy a titlest bag again. The last 2 bags from them the zipper broke in the biggest storage section…same exact spot. Sent them a letter and they basically said to bad I said goodbye .

Great call there! I used to double bag all of the time. That was the best way to make money if you weren’t forecaddying for 4. Did it for 9 years. Many times guys would show up with way too much in their bags or not even a carrying bag. We always had bags to switch the stuff into and they were fine with that. Maybe a system can be set up at a few courses where the caddies switch out the players bag prior to for testing? Good stuff!

I carry and occasionally ride, never push. The amount of bands on the market that cater to just simple carry is very poor. Too big around, to heavy, to many bells and whistles. The older Taylormade Micro-Lite and Callaway 2.5 bags were simple and efficient. All those bags and I see nothing any good. Bring back Madras, Ping LT and others

Where is Ogio??? I have had two of their stand bags and loved them and thinking about buying a third. To me, most of the bags are means to gaudy advertising by the golf bag manufacturers. They should pay us to use their bags!

Well the only bag I like & I have tried many is the Ping Hoofer series! By far the best quality bag, easy to carry, nicest straps. It might not be the lightest on the scale but feels light carrying it. Not to mention you never have to fight with the legs coming down because of a strap that keeps them tight activated by the shoulder strap. Another nice feature is the fact that the leg activation is inside the bag so it doesn’t snag anything when input it in the back seat of my truck.

The sun mountain two5 is unbelievably good/awesome/terrific. I am very cheap yet I happily paid $180 for this one. Yes, there aren’t lots of pockets. But If you’re a full time walker like me you don’t need lots of pockets. This has plenty, and easily enough room for 14 clubs. And it is LIGHT. lots of my buddies are getting it after feeling mine.

Love my nike air hybrid! The 14 dividers keep every club nicely in place without too much chatter while walking… “which is important to me because I take very good care of my clubs and hate how your irons can get nicked up from bouncing around in your bag” it also has great versatility. I do use a cart when I can and this bag is just as nice as any cart bag on the market. But one of the biggest deciding factors was the color options. The vapor yellow stands out in a crowd.

Thanks for the insightful test Tim but the Sun Mountain 2.5 is not a Sunday bag. It’s the lightest carry bag ever made!

Gotta say, it’s weight is impressive – and personally, I’d have at using it for a carry bag on a 36 day like at Bandon Dunes. But as a daily use bag, we found it better fitting as a Sunday Bag.

We could probably say it’s not a sunday bag and give it runner up status under “Best lightweight bag” – but then it wouldn’t get a mention.

As someone who carries exclusively, next year I would like to see you consider refining your ratings categories and metrics to provide a distinction between true carry vs. carry/push cart bags. You can’t judge the best lightweight bag, assuming this means true carry, with metrics for whether it works well in a push cart. Also the storage comparison to some of the bigger hybrid bags are not in line. JMO, Thanks

I really, really hope that this “review” is an extremely late April Fool’s joke. Stand bags are to be carried for 18 holes. As such, the primary metric should be weight. I started golfing 56 years ago and have had the opportunity to use dozens of bags. For the past several years, I have gamed a Jones Bag. Two weeks ago I put a Sun Mountain 2.5 into play. If the beverage pocket were changed into a Jones like ball pocket, the bag would be perfect. Any bag which tips the scale in excess of 4.25 pounds should be consigned to the non-carry category.

I could not disagree with you more! My personal preference is stand bag above cart because I am looking for the freedom and versatility it gives me as a player on course. Working out regularly, I don’t have a great issue with the stand bag being 2 or 6lbs. Personally I am looking more for the durability, comfort and storage. Hence, I appreciate the metrics are weighted equally. Otherwise, we’re looking on a subjective discussion on which metric should be weighted above the other.

I appreciate the transparency of the test values. I would personally not go for the winners in any of the categories, but I can check the metrics that are important to me, and find “my” winner.

However, perhaps a remark/question to the great guys at MGS–> Is the grading based on expectations or comparative? Finding it bit hard to swallow how the pencil bag “Mizuno Tour Scratch” could score a “10” in storage, evidently the same result as the massive Callaway Tour bag…

Great question. The Nexus, Wilson bag is in my opinion the best bag out there PERIOD.

      Reply

      MyGolfSpy

Here are some of the reasons that the Nexus moved down in our results:

      – More testers
      – Additional and updated parameters
      – Updates from competitors without updates in the Nexus (the Nexus weighs more now than it did originally)
      – Introduction of a new bag to the market that in and of itself without updates to the parameters would have knocked the Nexus out of “runner-up” (Projekt)

Interesting that the Callaway HyperLite 3 scored so much higher than the HyperLite 5 in most categories, when the 5 is supposed to have more features/benefits than the 3. I’m in the market for a Callaway stand bag and was going to go with the 5, but this ranking may change my tune.

I have the HyperLite 5 and no complaints from me. Although, I do agree with its Club Binding score as sometimes I’ll grab my 7 iron and the 6 and 5 irons decide they want to come out too.

I always use a push cart (or ride) and the bag fits on nicely. Also easy to lug to the range.

My 2002 ping J bag gave me years of joy. I retired her after last season. That bag wore like iron but sadly the inside liner started to come apart and clubs started to get tangled. It almost cost me a stroke in a tournament because I couldn’t get my driver out of my bag… it took 3 of us to get in out!
