The KING OS is Cobra’s most recent foray into the Super Game-Improvement, or perhaps more aptly, the high-performance Super Game-Improvement category. If any of that gets lost in translation, what we’re really talking about is Cobra’s latest take on maximum distance coupled with maximum forgiveness.

The KING OS isn’t a compact iron, but that comes with the territory. This is what best of both worlds technology looks like.

For those who might be wondering, the KING OS isn’t a direct replacement for anything in the current line, but I suppose one could argue that it is a replacement for Cobra’s original (1994) KING OS. Fun fact, that classic was the best-selling iron in the market from 1995-1996.

Talk about your extended release cycles.

The big difference between then and now? According to COBRA, the 2017 version of the KING OS is its first iron that reaches the USGA’s COR limit.

Cobra’s recent MAX offerings, while most definitely SGI by design, had a decidedly more senior slant to them. KING OS’ appeal should extend well outside of the gates of The Villages. It’s for anyone looking for a longer and more forgiving iron. When golfers are honest about their abilities and limitations, that’s a massive demographic.

LONG LIVE THE (BIG OL’) KING

Given that Cobra is reviving a classic franchise, it’s fitting that KING OS is positioned against another classic revival. Cobra believes the KING OS can stand toe to toe with Callaway’s Big Bertha, and anything else in its class. We’re not talking about a shot-shaper’s iron. This one is for those of us willing to admit we need help.

As you might expect given the nature of the category, what we’re actually talking about is a beefy iron that offers plenty of mis-hit protection, and an abundance of speed as well.

I’d say KING OS is Fast and Forgiving, but I believe that particular phrase has already been taken.

PWRShell and Tungsten

The bulk of the KING OS’ benefits is the product of what Cobra calls a PWRShell face. PWRShell allows for a larger and thinner face, which produces more speed (especially on mis-hits). PWRShell’s design saves weight in both the face and sole structures, which frees up a bit of that highly desirable discretionary mass. A lightweight aluminum badge frees up a bit more.

You can probably guess what’s coming next.

“Really the key to distance is lower CG, which is a big challenge when you create a larger iron. Our multi-material cavity construction and strategically placed tungsten weighting in our KING Oversized irons allows us to place CG lower, which ultimately delivers more speed and higher launch.” – Jose Miraflor, Senior Director of Product Marketing, COBRA Golf

The KING OS’ large cavity gives Cobra plenty of room to work, and more specifically, plenty of opportunities to strategically position mass. Each of the OS irons has 50-70 grams (deepening on loft) placed low and deep to drive the center of gravity down and back. It’s easy to get bogged down in the relative numbers, so just understand that we’re talking about a lot of tungsten and by extension, a lot of strategically placed weight.

The result is an iron that creates higher launch, more distance, and plenty of forgiveness.

Purpose-Optimized Grooves

Cobra’s KING OS irons feature a 100% milled face with loft dependent grooves. The long irons (4-6) feature V-grooves for lower spin and more distance, while the short irons (7-PW) offer U-grooves for increased spin and more control. Finally, the GW and SW features the same groove pattern as Cobra’s Tour Trusty wedges. What that gets you are set wedges that provide the same green-stopping power as real wedges.

I bought the original Oversize in 1994 and still play with them. Although the 2017’s are a revamped version and technology has changed a lot since then. I don’t believe these are forged like the old ones. If I do change my iron set, it will be for a set of Forged Tec or Forged Tour clubs.

How big are these? Given the price point why would anyone take these over the King Forged Tec?

Actually having played players irons for years, why would I want to go to a forged iron? I have seen significant improvement to my game with the advanced oversized irons and I came across a set that are essentially F7 irons with an OS flavor! For most of us game improvement amateurs, this is a godsent and the same powershell that I have in my F7 4 iron and gap wedge, consider me sold!

The king os were the farthest best hitting clubs I’ve ever hit. With ping isk a close second before. I went down Down hill after I got rid of them for a few years scrambling for the new.

OK nice SGI clubs but why slap a billboard on the back? A little more taste would be a good thing. May as well say “I suck” on the back. Not against SGI irons just ugly golf clubs.

      I think they look okay.
I love the KING on the back, not so much “Oversize” with it.
They seem to have a very thick top line, which is the norm for SGI irons, but all that weight low screams “chunk” to me. I like their ideas with the different grooves and having functional wedges in the set.
I currently play the Cobra S3 irons from 2012 or 13..? with graphite shafts and hit them well., ball comes out low and hot yet sits softly on most occasions. It would take something special for me to give those up at this time.
The 1Gnote price point is steep in my opinion.
I also have no issue with Black and Orange as a color scheme, Its classic and looks good. Flyers colors work for me, but I’m 34 and am from Philly so….

IMHO the S3s might be the best irons Cobra ever made. They should bring them back and just re-brand them

Hey G…I played OS irons for years, and am not intimidated by the OS design or the name. Essentially all game improvement irons are OS irons by nature. I currently have the F6s and the 4 iron and gap wedge in the F7s and would be more than happy to upgrade to these from my Bio Cells. IMO these are irons that I would consider every bit as good as the F7s and their powershell toe design! I see a set going for $250 CDN on Kijiji! Best deal yet on a decent set of GI OS irons!

WOW! Only 5 total comments after a whole work day displayed on mygolfspy for the “NEW” Cobra irons? (now 6 with my comment)
This should be a HUGE wake up call for the brass at Cobra Golf. Your irons are UGLY! Enough of the orange accent colors! I don’t care how much you are paying Rickie Fowler. Orange sucks! Orange is Powerbilt’s color and look where they are.
Please give us something interesting and aesthetically pleasing for a change and the market will respond.
For now, just another turd iron from Cobra.

Not a bad look. I’d be curious to see what it looks like at address, I’m one who doesn’t mind a little “junk in the trunk” as long as it’s not an obnoxious amount.

I wonder if these are more in line to compete with the XR OS by Callaway vs. the Big Bertha which are a couple years old now. Other than the revival of the name of course.
