Adams Idea Black CB3 Irons

(Written By: GolfSpy T) When our contact at Adams dropped me a message to let me know we had some demos of the new Idea Black CB3 irons on the way I jumped to the conclusion that they would fall between the MB2s and the Idea Pro a12s the Adams lineup. Even after unpacking the irons it didn’t occur to me to double-check those initial impressions. Hell…even when I was going back and forth with TaylorMade discussing what their acquisition of Adams would mean for the better player irons in the Adams lineup; I actually used the Adams CB3 as an example.

Fortunately, before I got golf balls deep into this review I decided to get confirmation on the placement of the irons from Adams. It turns out I was wrong. They fooled me, Jerry!

The reality of the situation is that within the current Adams lineup the Idea Black CB3 falls between the Idea Pro a12 (what I call a transitional iron), and the SGI Idea a12 OS (most definitely super (duper) game-improvement. Sure…if I had initially taken the time to look the CB3’s over, I would have been able to piece it all together, but at a quick glance, it was an easy mistake to make. As you’ll learn time and time again throughout the course of this review, while the Idea Pro Black CB3 might qualify as a game-improvement iron, it barely looks the part, and that perhaps is what makes it so damn appealing.

The Marketing Angle

Adams is billing the Idea Black CB3 Irons as having Better Looks, Better Feel, and Better Playability. Here’s the short story of what makes that possible:

  • Forged 8620 carbon steel – triple milled (cavity, face and grooves)
  • Black Ni/Cr PVD finish with a glass beaded face to produce an exceptional look at address.
  • Engineered with progressive sole widths that allow for easier to hit long irons and deadly accurate scoring clubs.
  • Scoring clubs designed with improved bounce and camber to reduce turf interaction for more workability and control.

Our test sets included 4-GW with KBS Tour 90 shafts in both stiff and regular flex.

PERFORMANCE SCORING

Short Iron Performance

While not quite the 44° model we saw withe the Wilson Ci11 irons we tested, for the CB3, Adams too has gone with a strongly lofted pitching wedge. Of course, strongly lofted is a matter of opinion, and for better or worse, 45° is quickly becoming standard for game improvement sets as the 3-iron disappears, and the gap wedge ingrains itself as fixture in the modern iron set. As you might expect, shafts too have been lengthened (again, compared to a traditional pitching wedge), with the PW playing at standard 9-iron length, and the gap wedge measuring standard for most pitching wedges. All of this makes perfect sense. When you factor in loft and length, the pitching wedge is basically a 9-iron anyway.

Would anybody be surprised if I told you that most of our testers found the entire set 1 or more clubs longer than what many have in their bags right now?

Looking at the actual data we found that our testers missed the pin by an average of 26.57 feet. That’s within our average range, and is perhaps higher than it might otherwise have been. One simply didn’t hit the CB3s well across the board. The 2nd normally plays irons bent 2° flat, so that certain could also impact accuracy (we’ll be moving to more of a custom fit model for testing, which should help mitigate these sorts of fitting issues).

When we adjust the average by removing our least accurate tester from the equation, distance from the pin improves to 23.43 feet, placing the CB3 right in the middle of all the irons we’ve tested under the new system.

As you can see from the chart, misses tended to favor the left side. Perhaps most surprising is that more of the misses to that side fell short. Generally speaking golfers will miss short right and long left.

Looking simply at our tester’s ability to hit the short irons straight, we see that our testers missed the center of the target line by an average of 19.03 feet. When we adjust the average, accuracy improves to 15.88 feet, which suggests our testers weren’t quite as straight as they’ve been with some of the other irons we’ve tested.

When we look at our testers ability to reach the target distance (regardless of left/right orientation), we see that our golfers missed the distance by an average of 14.95 feet. With the least consistent tester removed, distance control improves to 13.93 feet, which is above average for the irons we’ve tested to date.

Finally, when we look more closely for birdie opportunities we find that our group of testers as a whole managed 6 shots (from (3 different testers) inside of 10 feet. Bumped out to 15 feet, the number of birdie opportunities jump to 15.

In general we saw some bigger misses than we generally see with short irons, and that may be due to the CB3s very un-game-improvement take on game-improvement, however, the best shots were also generally tighter to the pin than we normally see from clubs in this category.

Short Iron Performance Score 89.39

Middle Iron Performance

With middle irons (defined in this test as 6-8 irons), our testers missed the pin by an average of 29.54 feet. As it always does, the average improved to 27.60 feet when our least accurate tester was removed. While it’s not a stellar number, it’s squarely middle of the pack for the irons tested to date.

Looking at our golfer’s ability to hit the ball straight, we find that our testers missed the center line by an average of 19.76 feet. When we eliminate the golfer least able to avoid spraying like a graffiti artist crystal meth, left/right dispersion improves to 17.98 feet.

Distance control played out similarly to left/right accuracy with our testers missing the distance by an average of 18.27 feet. With our least consistent golfer eliminated, the adjust average improves to 17.36 feet.

Looking at what matters most (legitimate birdie opportunities), we find that our testers were able to place 10 shots (at least one from all 6 testers) inside of 15 feet. If we’re feeling good about our putting and define birdie range as 20 feet, the overall number of reasonable one-putt chances increases to 17.

Middle Iron Performance Score: 91.58

Long Iron Performance

Not surprisingly, the majority of our long irons shots with the Adams Idea Black CB3 landed short and right of the target line (a fact in which played a substantial role in its creation).

On average our testers missed the pin by an average of 44.15 feet. With our least accurate tester removed, the group average improves to 39.59 feet, which like most of the accuracy numbers our testers posted for the CB3, is squarely in the middle of the pack.

Looking at proximity to the center line, we see that our testers missed the mark by an average of 33.91 feet, and 28.31 feet adjusted.

Looking at our tester’s ability to get the distance, we find that our testers missed their target distance by an average of 20.65 feet. When the least consistent tester is removed, accuracy improves to 17.89 feet, which makes the Adams Idea Black CB3 (as of the time of this writing) #1 overall for long iron distance control.

Looking at birdie chances (inside 20 feet) we find only 5 shots from 3 different testers. If we’re feeling generous and bump the distance out to 25 feet, the number of one-putt opportunities increases to 13.

Long Iron Performance Score: 89.99

Performance Notes

Overall the Adams Idea Black CB3 proved to be a very solid game-improvement iron. This is one of those cases where I feel like the scores came back a bit lower than what I personally think the iron is capable of producing. Given that we had two first time testers, and one of our other testers clearly didn’t have his absolute best stuff, it’s reasonable to think there may be a few more points out there, but lines must be drawn, and this is that.

MGS OVERALL PERFORMANCE SCORE: 90.31

The Interactive Data

The charts below show the individual and group averages (black dotted line) for each shot our golfers took during our test of the Adams Idea Black CB3 Irons. You can click on each of 3 tabs (Adams CB3 – Short Irons, Adams CB3 – Mid Irons, Adams CB – Long Irons) you can see where each shot came to rest on our virtual driving range, and the raw data (averages) for each of our testers. Hovering over any point will give you all the details of that particular shot. You can use the filters on the right-hand side to show and hide individual golfer based on handicap and proximity to the pin. At your whimsy you can drag the Distance from Hole slider around to show you how many shots fell within the area you specify.

SUBJECTIVE SCORING

Looks

What really stands out to me is what ultimately could be the downfall of the CB3 in the marketplace. The damn thing doesn’t really look like a game-improvement iron. In many respects, the CB3 is simply a larger, potentially more forgiving version of the Pro a12 iron. The entire iron is basically done in gray scale; from the black nickel PVD finish, to the silver badge to the black ABS frame. It’s an absolutely beautiful game improvement iron, but the total lack of color (save the red on the KBS label) might turn off some GI guys who are accustomed to more than a splash of color in their irons.

While the topline is thick, it’s not intrusive (or offensive). Yes, soles are wider, but certainly narrower than what we see  in most game-improvement designs (which suggests the CB3 might not be solidly in the GI category). There is a generous amount of offset, but the guys at Adams did a pretty solid job of blending it such that the hosel doesn’t look like its sitting well in front of the face.

While not as compact as a player’s cavity-back, the face is relatively compact, though is certainly taller than what I have in my bag now. The bottom line is that game-improvement designs have developed a bit of a reputation for being “shovels”. If you’re a fan of shovels, the CB3 may not be for you.

“The looks…reminded me of Titleist irons” – Lou Y. (how often do you hear that about a GI club?)

One other noteworthy aspect of the looks of the Adams CB3 irons, is the inclusion of what Adams calls progressive sole widths. Essentially, as the clubs get longer the soles get wider. Interestingly, this is the opposite of what Cobra did with their AMP Irons (as the clubs get longer, the soles get more narrow). The result of what Adams has done are short irons that look and play more like player’s cavity-back designs, long irons that look a bit more like, and play closer to traditional game-improvement irons, and middle irons that bridge the gap between the two. Effectively Adams has created one of the first true “combo sets” for mid to mid-high handicap golfers. How cool is that? Don’t answer…I’ll just tell you…it’s really, really cool.

While in many respects they play like a game-improvement iron, the Idea Black CB3 iron barely looks the part…and that’s good thing.

MGS Looks Score: 93.53

Sound & Feel

Whether you want to chalk it up to being forged, or simply the subjective impact that the idea of forged irons have, our testers mostly loved the feel of the Idea Black CB3 irons. While one of our testers told us that the middle irons felt lighter than the short irons, he still found the nebulous concept of feel to be outstanding at impact.

Truth be told, game-improvement irons have come a long way in just the last couple of years (where feel is concerned), so it’s not the surprise it used to be when we receive a great feeling game-improvement club.

Worth mentioning…I don’t think we can discount the shaft entirely in the feel equation. Irons that feature KBS shafts generally score better than those with most anything else in the feel category. The pattern suggests (as most would assume to be true anyway), the shaft definitely plays a role in the feel equation.

MGS Feel Score: 92.45

Perceived Forgiveness

Our surveys came back with some interesting results for forgiveness. Not surprisingly, the tester who struggled across the board didn’t find the CB3 to be a very forgiving club. The same is true of our senior tester (despite posting some of his highest performance scores to date). The CB3 more or less does what I’d expect a game-improvement iron to do. They produce mostly straight shots, and do a better job than most at keeping you out of trouble.

If there’s a knock it’s that the CB3 might be a bit more penal on shots hit high on the face compared to some of the other GI irons we’ve tested, but overall, it rates above average for forgiveness.

Tester Perceived Forgiveness Score: 91.38

Likelihood of Purchase

LOP scores broke down along the same lines as forgiveness scores. Several of our testers rated the club extremely high (and much higher than I’d expect from any game-improvement club), while our least accurate, and our most senior tester basically told us there’s no chance at all they’d purchase the CB3s. That’s going to happen with most any club, but what I find most telling is that a group of guys, many of whom habitually rate Game-Improvement irons low for likelihood of purchase told us that if they were going to purchase a more forgiving club than what they currently play, the Adams Idea Black CB3 would likely be the one.

Tester Likelihood of Purchase: 86.00

Just one guy’s opinion here, but when it comes to designing a game-improvement iron that might actually appeal to guys like (guys who thumb their noses at anything bigger than an Idea a12 pro iron for example) Adams basically did everything right. It’s a stunning iron that offers outstanding feel, and can easily make you forget your holding what is probably a game-improvement iron. If you love the idea of a game-improvement iron, but aren’t a fan of the aesthetic sacrifices often made to increase performance, we may have just found the iron for you.

TOTAL SUBJECTIVE SCORE: 81.38

CONCLUSION

I’ve talked in the past about the concept of a transitional iron…something between a game-improvement iron, and a players iron. While there are clearly several design elements that could squarely classify the CB3 as a GI iron, Adams doesn’t want to pigeonhole it into that category, and based on my experience, and what I saw from my testers, I can understand why. The CB3 is a bit of a unique offering. While we humans love our taxonomies, the CB3 isn’t an iron that fits comfortably into any of the categories we like to use. In my estimation, it sits somewhere between a transitional club, and a modern game-improvement iron. It offers the playability of the latter, but has the aesthetic appeal of the former.

As I said earlier, the Adams Black CB3 is in some respects a combo set for mid to mid-high handicap golfers. Those of you out there who want a more traditional look in your scoring clubs, but aren’t willing to sacrifice the forgiveness of your game-improvement long irons, finally have a set that truly offers the best of both worlds.

I don’t say this often when it comes to GI clubs, and I certainly don’t say it lightly; the Adams Idea Pro Black is solidly at the top of an extremely short list of game-improvement clubs (if you want to call it that), that I (and some of my testers) would actually consider putting in their bags.

MGS TOTAL SCORE: 89.38

Has anyone tried these with the graphite shafts?
I was thinking of the new Cobra Amp, but their lofts of too jacked up.
If anyone has played or hit some with the graphite shafts please let me know your thoughts and if they are worth the up charge from the KBS steel.
      Thanks

My CB3 Steel – Reg have proved perfect for my game. I am a casual golfer and I am happy I bought them. They launch my ball high, I love the sound & the feel when struck well from the sweet spot. I feel that KBS Tour90 shaft is lighter and well tuned as a stock offering. The clubs are appropriately forgiving while stock Adams grip is perfect as well. The overall quality of the product is commendable and I would recommend these to anyone who is a weekend / casual golfer and wants to enjoy his game. Thanks!

I know I’m late to the conversation, but I went to get fully fitted for clubs at TourStop at WGV today (something that was not well done at Edwin Watts whent I got the clubs I’m currently using). The process was a solid two hours (maybe a little more) and we went to the range three times (at the suggestion of the fitter NOT the fittee, which I appreciate). I went with Mizuno JPX 825 Pro, TaylorMade Rocket Bladez, and Callaway RazorX Hot in mind (in that order) but kept my mind totally open because, really, WTF do I know. I hit those and it was between the Bladez and the 825 Pros with different, lighter, shafts (in that order). So we went back and he brought out the CB3s, which I learned later that most of the guys at the store use them (CB2 or CB3) and you’d think the guys there know a thing or two about clubs.

Anyway, I hit the CB3s (and I mis-hit them) and almost all of the hits (and mis-hits) went well. VERY WELL! VERY VERY WELL! And believe me, I tried to hit the Bladez and 825 Pros as well (or as bad) but there just wasn’t a comparison in flght, feel, performance (not in that order). So I bought the CB3s, except they didn’t have them in stock…

I will let you know how I REALLY do with them (in the real world once I pick them up next week), but I’m fairly optimistic! Actually, VERY! optimistic! LOL!!!

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to hit an Adams CB3 demo 6-iron. Not knowing anything about it (Player’s iron? Game-improvement? Super game-improvement?), I had no preconceived notions about the club. These are reasonably forgiving and long. As a 16.8 index, this was helpful in that it had been awhile since I last hit balls. Though forged, the CB3 irons are only marginally softer feeling than my cast Pings. The standout is having KBS Tour 90 shafts as the stock offering! I would recommend any decent ball striker (and those who think they are) to try these before buying. I wish I had!

I would like to be entered into the contest. I would like to see Adams advertise more. They have great equipment but I don’t think most golfers consider their brand to be competitive with Taylormade, Callaway, etc. Right handed, stiff steel shafts, clubs need to be lengthened 1.25″. I live near Richardson so I could easily go to your custom fitting center should I win. Good luck everyone!

I would like to see Adams come out with more aggressive styling in their irons to match cobra and tm. To me, Adams has always looked like your “grandfathers” clubs, but you can’t argue with the performance. I think the cb3 blacks are on the right track. Good looking irons! I play light weight stiff steel shafts in my irons.

I think that with Adams Golf being purchased by Taylormade-Adidas AG you have the making of a perfect storm for the golf consumer. Taylormade has established itself as a marketing powerhouse even with the golf club industry suffering in sales globally. The brand loyalty of it’s wood lines is stunning given their annual turnover of models. Adams on the other hand has been known by industry insiders as a cutting edge technology driven company. Astute (not just seniors and ladies) golfers were already aware of the often understated Adams golf advantage. With the patents on Adams hybrid and wood technologies expiring soon they are now postured to change the makeup of golf club sets forever. Linking Adams hybrid and irons technologies with Taylormade woods and brand loyalty should make them the major player across all skill lines of equipment in golf. From the better player to the weekend hacker they should be able to meet all needs with highly competitive price points. WIth this merger and the Taylormade advertising machine getting teed up other brands must be shaking in their pocketbooks. As long as they stay true to allowing both companies to maintain their identities future success seems to be a no brainer.

Just demo’d these today with the Stiff Flex among a ton of other irons and these were by far my favorite. Unbelievable feel. Not only did I hit these farther (I hit a 7 farther with the cb3 than most other 6’s I tried) but I also hit these more accurately and more consistently. I think the reviewers shouldnt be taken lightly when they say they would consider putting these in their own bag. I would love to win this contest so I could do the same. I think the only thing Adams need to do if the rest of their products are like this is improve their marketing. They definitely caught my eye but only after I tried it first-hand.

TM seems to have the golden touch when it comes to marketing. They have become the Apple of the golfing world and this leaves the future of Adams in question. TM obviously determined there is a substantial upside to the Adams name and/or patents and products. With the number of TM drivers in bags these days, they may be looking to integrate the Adams hybrid line to officially dominate the woods market. With Yes putters included, there could be a drastic increase in putter offerings as well.

All I hope is that I can still buy a hybrid that isn’t white in a couple years.

Would like to see Adams come out with GI/player irons that have conventional lofts. The strong lofts screw up the scoring irons and make wedge selection more difficult.

I would like to see Adams come out with a driver that performs like some of the component driver heads. Big hitters will always damage driver heads but the component companies seem to be a little more durable. Adams is already know for being long so what not try to keep the performance with a little better durability. If there is any OEM shop that can do it, Adams can.

I have just started to play golf (in 2011) and shosed an old setup with Adams idea pro gold (forged) stiff flex graphite shafts. Both the irons and the hybrids works excellent for me. Enough forgiving and great playability. It’s like “falling in love” for the first time. Feels perfect! I was told this was not clubs for a beginner but they looked and felt that dam good so I bought them anyway. Have not regret it a single time, and I still don’t understand why they are not for beginners…
I would like to see more inovation/thinking in custom setups and possibility to balance the clubs for more finetuning. Today it’s feels more like a coincident if a certain club fits you “perfect” or just “good”.

And golfspy: great reviews! Keep up the good work

The CB3 looks to be the perfect iron. Looks as if Adams has built a players iron that’s extremely workable but still has the forgiveness of the A4 or A12. I have held them at a demo day and at address they scream confidence. I would play the heck out these if I could get lucky enough to win such a awesome prize. I play X-STIFF. Thanks

I would hope that Calloway does not reassign the Adams design engineers and creative personnel away from their great work currently on the market. Leave Adams as a niche market for those of us that appreciate their work. Adams is ahead of the curve with their new finishes and especially their iron styles so, Calloway, leave them alone please. Don’t diminish your talent pool.

I would like to see Adams reinforce their position as the easiest set of clubs to play through the bag. I am a senior player and play to a 1 handicap. I have 3 Adams hybrids (3,4,&5) in my bag. I can honestly say that without the option of a hybrid my handicap and scores would be higher and I would be seriously challenged when playing longer courses. I have played with all the top hybrid clubs including those of their new parent company. My Adams hybrids out perform all of the rest. That’s not just me, it’s conformation from my peers who constantly reach into my bag to find out what I am using. The market segment of older players with slower swing speeds is a growth market that only Adams has addressed. They have accomplished that with a no nonsense approach to developing lighter clubs that perform, not an easy task. Taylormade needs to allow that philosophy to continue. The opportunity for them is to apply their marketing juggernaut to the Adams brand and get out of the way.

I think Adams has some of the best Drivers, players and semi-players(slight GI) irons in the market right now. We all know how great the Super GI and Hybrids are. I have hit these and like them a lot. Loved the looks and feel.

I think with some of the TM money, they should have more demo days to let people know how great thier stuff is. Also a Combo set of 4-GW with something like CB3 4-5, CB2 6-8 and MB 9-GW in Black PVD would be awesome. Or what ever is new in the works. Hopefully TM doesn’t harpoon them like Cally/Hogan.

I’m hoping that the only change made to Adams with the Taylor Made acquisition is a higher profile and more effective marketing strategy. As a long time fan of Adams I would really like to have better access to Adams products in the more “average” golf shop. I really like the way Adams seems to be able to simultaneously focus on different levels of golfers and pretty much hit the mark in each segment. I hope this continues.

I would like to see Adams go back to more chrome / steel finish on the irons and the sole of the woods. The black or colored finishes look great when new, but tends to wear away quickly. In fact, I would like to see a more durable finish on the sole of many of the Adams clubs. (case in point- I have an old set of Adams Idea A1Pros 3-PW and Idea Pro Gold wedges that clean up great and look nearly new, but have a set of A7s (that I love) but the black/graphite finish on the back is all nicked up and Tom Watson wedges w/ black finish that have completely wore the finish off). Likewise with the woods – I have Adams Redline RPM woods that still shine, but have an Speedline 11 driver that the sole already looks dull. Love the performance, would love it better if they looked better for a longer time.

I know that Adams has traditionally been known for producing excellent clubs for seniors and women, but I think they have produced some really excellent “players” clubs in the past several years. I am currently playing the Idea Pro A12 hybrid. In my opinion, this is one of the best “iron replacement” hybrids on the mjarket. I find it to be much easier to hit than my AP2 3 iron but still very workable. I had a chance to hit the CB3 irons at Golf Galaxy the other day, and I was really impressed with these irons. I love the look and the idea of making a club that is very forgiving but looks like a players irons. This was also my first time to hit KBS shafts (it is hard to find good demo clubs when you are left handed), and I think the KBS tour shaft works really well in this club. In the future, I hope Adams continues to develop these “players” clubs and also maintains the innovative approach that they have had over the past several years.

Love the review T. I also think it’s a pretty important point to touch on what Adams tried to do with making this a combo set without calling it a combo set and sticking it up against say the VR Pro Combo’s or the 588 combo’s in the market place.
The again, is this not what Ping has done with the new G20 and I20 lines as well?

What I want to see from Adams is to keep pushing the envelope. Keep pushing the looks, the funky designs, deep faced drives that a lot of the rest of the OEM’s stay away from and most importantly keep offering excellent shafts as stock choices. As more and more people finally figure out the fitting thing, I think this will push Adams more and more to the fore providing they get their name out there.
Do you want X iron brand at $899 plus $200 to go to KBS or do you want the Adams that perform the same for arguments sake that are $799? No brainer.

Well I’d like to see Adams remain independent and continue to produce a well balanced range of clubs pushing the technological boundaries. I think they need to get a little more inventive in terms of their marketing but not too cheesy and arguably misleading. RBZ anyone?.

Hats off to Adams for taking the industry toward an area most golf companies fear to go, the area between big and clunky and hard to hit. I like to black nickel finish and appreciate a thinner top line. Would like to see more technology put into their pro line clubs (not that I can play them). I play a men’s regular flex shaft.

I have only been playing for 11 months and have been bitten hard by the golfing bug. I am 40 years old and regret not taking up this special game earlier in life . My father, identical twin brother and I all play with Adams GI clubs and love them dearly. They have been playing for 30 and 20 years respectively and both have A3OS sets. I have the Adams A7 OS max which never came to Australia so I got It online. I have tried all other brands at demo days but always find the Adams feel and forgiveness to be superior. My golf teacher also uses the MB,s from Adams and loves them. No, he is not in the senior category which everyone pigeons Adams to be. I feel that Adams are simply a company that strives for excellence and takes pride in their work. Financial success is obviously very important but its not just about the bottom line. That underdog spirit has driven them to think outside the square and has resulted in them being the most innovative golf club manufacturer
In the market today. I am excited to learn that TM have purchased Adams as I see TM having a real opportunity to harbor that culture and support Adams ideology. If they can do that then the team at Adams can really spread their wings and soar. TM whatever you do just do your best to keep the Adams team together. Give them a payrise if you must but don’t loose the spirit that makes Adam golf great. They are the underdogs and everyone loves an underdog, especially when they show the big boys a thing or two.

I love Adams golf for their “no frill” looks and attitude. It appears to me that they make products that are real quality and will get the job done. Unfortunately that isn’t going to help them beat out the competition. I hope they find a way to keep setting the standard and still offer a “shinier” product. Some other brands are great at putting sprinkler on a turd and selling a ton of them. If Adams made a “glam” product and actually put quality into a golfer’s hand they could dominate the market.

I would hope that everyone at Adams has the chance to allow the initial ethos that they drawn up during the birth of the company to be realised. I hope that the company continues to develop clubs that represent players at every level and recognise (which I think they do now) that it is not the tour that represents golf but your weekend amateur who pays through the nose to enjoy his/her love. With this in mind I would like to see a hybrid that has a slightly flatter head than a g20 so it would have a iron like feel but also look like you could pick it off a fairway like a wood can. I would like the hybrid to have a large selection of shaft options that didn’t cost a bomb with a variety of flexs….and I want to to go dead boring straight! I want it Matt black on top and whatever Adams desire on the sole. I want this done by Christmas so that when I’m in Orlando I can pick it up from Edwin watts and murder a course with it. X

I’m loving these irons from Adams. I do really like the darker colour scheme employed in the players irons from Adams.

At the moment I’m playing Burner 2.0 at the moment in stiff flex. And currently I’m looking to upgrade to a forged game improvement iron. I’m looking at the Mizuno MP-53s, the Taylormade MCs and now these Adams CB3.

I think the dark gunmetal finish is sublime. We’ve all seen the chrome finish irons glaring in the sun when you’re out on the course and this colour sheme will really cut that out.

As far as the forged offerings from Adams if like to see them put together a combo set. I think there are a lot of players who would appreciate a little more help in the longer irons. And in addition to that Adams is ideally placed to offer Hybrids as 3 or even 4 iron replacements which would come as standard in the set.

I play a stiff shaft in all my clubs.

The ADAMS clubs have their own unique development and design of clubs for most handicaps, from high to low, and they should remain that way, NOT inherit TaylorMade’s club designs, simularily as they, Adams, have done with the YES putters take over.

This is exactly the type of iron set that I’d like to see more of from Adams Golf. As someone who has recently taken up golf again after a significant period of time away I’m really looking for something that inspires confidence but that doesn’t look like I’m throwing down a mallet. One addition that I would like to see (even just as an option for the set) are 3-hybrid and 4-hybrid irons. Adams hybrids are the best I’ve tried and, for my mind, would make a fantastic addition to this set.

I like to see the consistency Adams has into the future, do what you do best, provide the best quality and lasting experiences. Adams already figured it out the best 3 iron is the hybrid. Enough said. I love Adams clubs. Because of their concept, their focus and their delivery. I am a 11 handicap, STIFF, +1/2, under size grip size.

In the future, I would love to see not only a new blade from adams (hopefully their incredible R&D and engineers can find some way to make a blade that has a little more performance built in) but also some nice wedges. That is probably the one area they get the least play and seem to be the weakest. It would be cool to see some really strong wedges, hopefully some with different grinds or really versatile.

One of the main criteria in even trying a new set of clubs is whether they have eye appeal. There are some highly touted clubs out there that I’m sure are awesome clubs but if they don’t fit your eye, why bother. These are the rare find that would draw me into the golf store just to try them. Their appearance fit into the “beautiful tools” category. The top line is not too thick, the black finish classy, and the overall design very appealing. I was never an Adams fan because of the design and appearance of their clubs. These new clubs have what I would call golfers attraction. Lately, their woods have made major headlines not only for their quality and technology, but for their appearance. Now, these new irons are out and man, oh man, I’d love to get my hands on them. I’d bet that these are the new prototypes for future irons for other manufacturers. I just hope that any wedges similar to the irons are just as nice. Keep up the good work guys, their awesome.

this should appeal to the many avid golfers who fall into that 3-15 handicap range. This segment of the market spends money. Also these new iron sets Adams has come out with recently should help dispell the notion that they are a hybrid and upper end box set company. That is if Taylormade doesn’t ruin them.

I’m not sure if making the irons longer is a good thing or a bad thing, maybe for someone who is 6’+ but for me standing at an incredible 5’6″ I think it would get me to far away from the ball. I like the fact that the KBS is an offering on this set. I have to agree with Mike Sullivan though and hopefully TM leaves the Adams team alone, and it sparks some friendly competition withing the company. I play stiff flex shafts 1 up, my 5 iron shaft is a 4 iron shaft and so on.

Swallowed the ego long ago, enjoy humble pie and just want all the rewards that many golfers claim to have received by switching to GI or SGI sets. I need forgiveness, but have yet to find a GI that (for whatever reason) actually plays easier/better than my players cavity backs. For some reason, I play worse with GI’s than I do with player’s-CB because the look, feel and playability characteristics just don’t work for me. Lack of time/play has swelled my index from an 8 to a 12, so I can put a good swing on it, but still could use a little more forgiveness and distance. I’m hoping Adams continues in the pursuit of a product, reasonably balanced between noticable GI performance & accceptable aesthetics & pleasing/responsive feel. Holy Grail? Too much to ask? I’ve yet to find an OEM that’s found the perfect blend, but Adams is by far, is the closest to the mark. Hopefully the CB3’s will be the ticket.

After having played the Adams CB1 pro black irons (w/6.0 Proj. X) for years, I am glad for two things. One, that Adams has committed to create innovative forged/unforged (Cb 2/a12pro/Cb3) irons that more than answer their critics about being a one dimensional company (hybrids). Secondly, I am happy that they (at least it seems for now) are still able to apply their name to equipment that appears to be for mid/low handicappers that not only appeals to the eye, but plays strong. (Kudos for the a12pro setup…KBS and multi-compound grips) I was an “Adams guy” for a number of years, and I am struggling with their acquisition…much like Cobra people are likely doing now…This current product may not exactly fit me as a golfer, but I imagine it hits a greater market share and for that, one can’t help but be curious.
Viva Adams as an independent producer of equipment…after all, the last thing we need are more “walking billboards” with “17’s” and “Valentines” on their heads…

Along with that, continuation of the excellent metal woods families and hybrids. Throw in a little of Adidas/TMag marketing flare and you’d have a sustained growth of the brand and more people would appreciate the brand I absolutely love.

I’d love to see a non forged iron aimed at a players iron with forgiveness built in. Less offset like a blade but cavity back like a12. The reason for not forging the iron is so they won’t need o be constantly bent back to proper loft and lie. A cast iron would hold these properties better. Thanks again and I play dynamic gold x100 standard length , loft and 1.75 deg upright from Adams standard lie.

Also, I have a young son just getting into golf and I would love to see an Adams youth set of irons with hybrids. As a low ball speed single figure player this is a set which fits closely to my needs. The set might be even better if the rear trailing edge was chamfered to prevent snagging on takeaway. The longer irons could be improved with the addition of tungsten to lower the COG even further.

For the future it would be great if Adams could take the technology like the velocity slot and somehow make it less visually intrusive. It would be good if the range included clubs which suits the eye of better players but make them available with a wider range of shaft options and set configurations to meet the needs of the skilled low ball speed player.

IMHO, the CB3 should have stayed like the CB2 (more of a transitional iron) instead of going the GI road. There are enough GI and SGI irons out there and Adams had a really offering with the A12 and the CB2.

I would really like Adams to increase their presence in markets outside the US. When I bought my irons this year, I really wanted to demo the A12, but no fitter around me had Adams (they said they are not that sought after in Europe) so I had to go with Mizzy MP59. Now that they have TM’s marketing power, I hope they make good use of it, but don’t lose their own identity. Keep the player’s irons alive!

Adams has the best iron line up, top to bottom, in the business. I have the MB2’s and until recently, the A12 Pros. The CB3 sounds like it fills a niche the market has not filled to date- a GI iron without the shovelish looks.

Now, bring on the CMB’s!!!! I will definitely be getting a set.

I would like to see more robust fitting station/ability for Adams Golf. Presently they do not have a fitting cart available at Demo Days where you can swap out heads shafts etc to get fit. You simply have to find a club they bring to hit and hope it is one you want to try out, if they do not have the head/shaft combo you want to try you are out of luck

I have been saving up for a set of these for the past few weeks. They have just the right combination of:
      1. the form that makes you think you are hitting a low handicap “players” club
      2. the feel of hitting a perfect shot in the middle of the face and
      3. the looks of a “classy” beautiful woman that just keeps making you stare
I can’t wait until they are in my bag! Regular Flex and 2 Degrees up if you please.

What I wish to see in the future are some high end wedges that offer several options of lofts and bounce angles that would look great and perform at the legal limit of the USGA regulations. Thanks Adams for thinking of Every level of player in this great game.

Certainly a tough question given the current situation. There seems to be a consensus that Adams will at some point stop designing clubs for mid-low handicappers and focus solely on GI equipment. I imagine that anything we do see from Adams in the “players” category will be from the product pipeline that predates the sale to taylormade. However, if they have the freedom to do so, i would love to see those damascus steel putters in stores, and a low spin driver from them with more lie adjustability (the dfs and f12ls can only be adjusted upright). I have stiff shafts in my current set. Thanks for the opportunity, and thanks for the great reviews (i would love to see fast 12/ xtd reviews from you guys! i bought the 9064ls because of your review, and would be interested to see how the new one compares).

“Driven by innovation” is what they say well, we can see that with other companies “borrowing ” the velocity slot technology that Robert Karlsson used to such great effect in Abu Dhabi from 275yrds with a 3 wood to the green on 18. The future of Adams golf is cemented in the game as one of the most innovative brands on tour along with the aquasition of YES golf they now offer a complete package for any golfer. In my humble opinion the future is big and bright.i cant understand why somepeople say that Adams has a “seniors club image” considering the likes of G-mac carries 2 of there hybrids and did so while winning the US open and helping the European ryder cup team to victory .I would not call the MB2 a senior set of irons by any means or any of there clubs i think people are missing the point all this shows is that Adams can adapt a set of clubs to anyones game without fault.6 iron measure length 38.25,swing weight D8loft 61lie30 stiff shaft. thank you

Little bid of players club with little forgiveness in a great looking package. Since Taylormade bought Adams, I would like to see them market their products more effectively. They are good to great products that you don’t see anything on, maybe the LPGA or Senior Tour. Show your technology to the masses like the Rocketballz. Slot tech all the way !!!!!!!! Great looking and feeling irons. Keep up the good work , Barney!

I think Adams is on the right track in that they offer a wide range of solutions for a wide range of golfers. This is not easy but they are on track. The one thing I would like from Adams Golf are more demo days in Canada. These would be appreciated during the golf season. There is a very different feel hitting balls on a range versus hitting into a screen. Adams should customize their adverts to include and encourage proper fittings from Adams trained golf shops. I would love a set of CB3’s in my bag with a properly fitted stiff steel shaft. This would need to be confirmed at a properly trained Adams Golf Fitter. Also, stamping lofts on the clubs would be beneficial as there no longer seems to be a standard loft for clubs amoung manufacturers…stick it close!

Keep-up the great resource you are providing! This site has helped me find great equipment that will fit in my price range while performing just as good if not better than a heavily marketed brand.
I recently traded in a set of TM Burner 2.0 irons for a set of Adam’s CB2 irons which I really like that I have my grip of choice on them. Truth be told, I wanted them from the start but was sucked in by the added distance due to the decreased loft on the TM B 2.0 irons, especially in the long irons. Even though I was returning to the game of golf after 8 years of temporary insanity I wanted the softer feel, consistent distance, and feedback on off center hits that the TM B 2.0 irons didn’t offer (IMHO).
The black finish on the Adam’s irons is attractive but would like to see a similar finish that didn’t come off as easy. I would also like to see different shaft and grip options offered to the average consumer. The KBS Tour Smoke shaft would look pretty slick with the dark club head finish.
Stiff shafts are my modus operandi.

Great review, particularly liked the “Interactive Data” component of it. It let me dial into to the handicap range that I am interested in to see the experience of people with similar skill level.

As for what I’d like to see from Adams in the future: Please continue to provide equipment for mid-handicappers. It seems like there are a lot of OEMs out there focusing on high-handicappers or low-handicappers with not so much choice for the mid-handicappers. I’d be interested in Adams fairway woods that work just as well off the tee box as they do off other lies (deeper face, more forgiving on off-center hits)

I generally play R-Flex steel shafts in my irons. Currently been gaming the Adams A4 irons for a few seasons and loving it. Would love a chance to upgrade to the CB3s :-)

So I get what you’re saying here:
“Overall the Adams Idea Black CB3 proved to be a very solid game-improvement iron. This is one of those cases where I feel like the scores came back a bit lower than what I personally think the iron is capable of producing. Given that we had two first time testers, and one of our other testers clearly didn’t have his absolute best stuff, it’s reasonable to think there may be a few more points out there, but lines must be drawn, and this is that.”
…but I was kind of surprised and disappointed with the short iron performance numbers. And really, how often do your testers (or any of us, for that matter) have their (our) “best stuff”? Maybe I have just come to expect better than middle-of-the-pack performance from Adams. The clubs look great, GI or not. And kudos to Adams for continuing to develop and build quality products. But I guess what I would like to see (and expect) from Adams in the future are products that are better than middle of the pack (those that I have played or demo’d that I believe qualify are the 9064LS driver, Pro a12 irons and hybrids and Fast 10 fairway). Stiff flex, please.

I would like to see Adams keep their forgiveness in their hybrids and enhance that a bit more in their irons. I think their partnership with Taylor Made will only help to grow the brand. The old perception that Adams was for senior players and 30 plus handicappers is slowly being put to rest. I play stiff flex +1 degree upright, men’s standard length. I would like to see what Adams could do about designing putters as well.

First thing is WOW , the CB3 Looks like everything I want in a players iron. Great look ! Simple lines and thinnner sole profile but good weight behind the face will equal a forgiving , high launching but very workable iron. A player needs to look at there club and have overwhelming confidence in it and these just scream ” reliability and performance !”. As far as what I would love to see from Adams is a tour caliber fitting and building of clubs . Be able to go out to Texas and get fit by the fitters who fit and build for the tour. Even though I do not play on the PGA Tour I still play at a very high level on tours like the Hoiters Tour or the Pepsi tour. I play Adams clubs from 2-PW, hybrids, fwys and driver and my play could benefit from Tour caliber attention from Adams. To be fit at the highest level could do worlds of help to my game . I could be farther along than I am now if I would of had Tour fitters dialIng in every club . Handpicked and weighed heads at time of build. Just give us the treatment your tour guys get . Of course for a price. Your treatment for $1500 plus price of clubs. You will have players beating down your door. Thanks for another great club, the CB3 takes every cake! Great Job!!

The future of Adams is going to depend on the stock holders and TMaG getting a better deal put together first – or if it has – then it may be possible and I stress “may’ be possible for TMaG to let Adams operate independently from a operations/design standpoint and ONLY add what TMaG does best and that would be MARKETING – BRANDING and MERCHANDISING. TMaG does do a good job on the operations and design/engineering side – but we all know why TMaG bought Adams. It wasn’t for their Marketing skills. Anyway – I purchased the F12 LS Driver and do like it quite a bit. The bounce/roll I get off that driver with a good high performance call – HX Diablo Tour (Mid Price) or Pro V1X (High Price) is amazing. So if these irons performed as well as everyone says they have – I have yet to even demo a Adams Iron – mainly because I am very happy with my PING G5’s – Bring em on!

I’ve always (perhaps mistakenly) placed Adams irons squarely in the game improvement category. I play Cleveland TA5’s, which by almost any measure were considered GI irons when I purchased them (similar to GI lofts, D0 swing weight with graphite shafts, etc). However, i never thought of the Cleveland clubs as GI because the blade size and appearance is more traditional, and certainly more traditional than the clubs I’ve seen from Adams.

These CB3’s might be just the ticket for me with their subtle appearance, slightly longer shafts, and modest GI characteristics. I am curious enough to look a little deeper and consider them an option to the Titleist AP2 I was considering and suggest by my instructor.

Living in Asia, Adams is not very big. So I can’t just walk in a pro shop and test them. Getting them for free would be nice.

I presently play Taylormade irons, but have been interested and intrigued by Adams irons for some time now. I presently play regular graphite shafts in my irons. Sometimes I wonder if I need an even softer shaft as I am 72 years old and do not possess the swing speed I once did.

For the future of Adams, I would really like to see more of their wedge line up. The irons and woods are fantastic, and their forged offerings always feel amazing. It seems to me that it’s time to push the wedges a little bit. I would like to at least be able to find them in a store.

Great review on the Adams CB3 irons. I would like to see Adams offer them in a satin or chrome finish. Darker finishes tend to show wear quickly. Would love to play them! Regular shafts please.

As far as the contest goes, I agree with everyone else. I love where Adams is at right now with their clubs, and if they do anything, they need to market their products better. I am just hoping that TMAG does not COMPLETELY take over Adams. I hope they stay good and keep the Adams name running strong. Just in case I somehow win this contest, I would want my irons with a stiff shaft.

As far as the review goes, I have to admit that I love the look of the club. As you golfers who have been active on the forum lately, you know that that has been happening me a lot. I don’t know why, but every club is just appealing to me. I am a little surprised by the short game-performance, but as you mentioned, new testers and off-days probably contributed to that. The fact that the LOP was so high shocks me even more. Overall, it looks like a great club. I just need to win a pair to see for myself ;)

I play Adams driver and fairway clubs, senior flex, and really like them. My wife has complete Adams set and I’ve tried her irons and like them. I think they have been most innovative in their approach to design; maybe it’s just marketing that has held them back.

These irons look amazing. Currently I play Ping 58’s 3/4″ long stiff. I like the way these Adams Irons look! BTW… Ask any good player 8 or less, the way an iron looks sitting on the ground is in your head and either you like it or don’t like it. If they see this club sit behind the ball their going to love it… For a game improving club their awesome!

I would like to see Adams shed the “senior or ladies” player image that it has. Rightfully so or not, it’s out there. I think their sticks are fantastic and full of technology. Knowing the TM has purchased Adams golf, I’d like to see Adams marketed better because I think their clubs are top notch.
