“No single driver we’ve tested this year comes close to matching the Adams 9064LS as far as the opinions of our testers are concerned!”

Adams 9064LS – Speedline Technology is back in black

You may recall that earlier this year we put Adams’ Speedline Fast 10 Driver through our test process. In fact, the Speedline Fast 10 was the first club we put through the new review process we implemented earlier this year.  Looking back through the drivers we’ve tested since then, I think it’s fair to say that the Fast 10 has held up pretty well against the competition.

Adams isn’t one of those companies that frequently releases multiple drivers in a single golf season.  The all black 9064LS features the 4th generation of Adams Speedline technology, which utilizes aerodynamics to reduce drag, and increase clubhead speed.

I’m not going to rehash too much of the technical stuff about the 9064LS. To a large extent we covered it when we previewed the 9064LS back in May, and realistically, the underlying technology hasn’t changed significantly since our review of the Adams’ Speedline Fast 10 Driver. Adams would like you to know that the 9064LS has a deeper face, reduces spin by 15%, and like most new drivers on the market today offers up to 15 more yards off the tee.

I’ve probably hit every driver Adams has released over the last several years, and have come to the conclusion that I’m probably not an Adams guy, well at least I wasn’t before. While it’s safe to say there’s never been single one that I absolutely hated, it’s just as accurate to say that there wasn’t a single one that I really loved either. While many of our testers thought highly of the Fast 10, the truth is that I wasn’t one of them. When that review was complete, I came out of it thinking that the Fast 10 was probably just another driver that would get lost in the shuffle as the season progressed. That was at least 10 drivers ago, and while in hindsight I don’t think I appreciated it as much as should of, I think we more or less got the review right. So as much as I like it when new clubs show up for testing, when UPS dropped of the 9064LS, I wasn’t nearly as excited as I otherwise might have been.  But read on and find out why I am a whole lot more excited now.

Adams 9064LS Technical Specifications

  • Available Loft: 8.5°, 9.5°, 10.5°
  • Length: 45.5″
  • Volume: 460cc
  • Swing Weight: D3
  • Stock Shafts: Aldila RIP (Alpha and Gamma models available)

What We Tested, and How We Tested It

Adams Golf sent us a sample of the 9064LS with the following specifications:

  • Loft: 9.5°
  • Shaft: Aldila RIP Gamma
  • Flex: Stiff
  • Grip: Adams/Golf Pride Performance Velvet

Like we often do when we receive a new club, we tested the specifications against the manufacturers stated specs.  I then taped the crown and sole with Ghost Tape to protect the clubs during our testing process and finally, we have golfers hit the product, and share their thoughts on how the 9064LS compares to what they currently play as well as the other drivers they’ve tested this season.

All performance testing was done using PGA TOUR Simulators, powered by 3Trak, from aboutGolf.  Testing took place at Tark’s Indoor Golf Club; a state-of-the-art golf training, club fitting and repair facility located in Saratoga Springs, NY.  Recent upgrades to the software that powers the simulators have given us the capability to provide even more swing data than we have in previous reviews, so even more detail in our next round of reviews.

When I review a club, I almost always swing it over the course of 3 or 4 sessions before I sit down to do my testing.  Most of the time I don’t notice any significant difference between my first session and the final session where I collect my data.  Rarely do my first impressions fail me, but I do it because I believe that as the primary tester, I should spend a reasonable amount of time with a club in order to provide the most complete perspective that I reasonably can.  While the sampling is admittedly somewhat small, for no club that I’ve tested so far has my initial thinking differed from my conclusion.

Performance Rating

While neither myself nor anyone else who hit the 9064LS for us can honestly claim it gives us 15 or even 10 more yards, most of our testers did find it to be at least 5 yards longer than their current driver.  As far as you the 9064LS compares to other drivers we’ve tested this year; if you read our review of the PowerBilt Air Force One N7 drivers, you can no doubt understand why we consider that club to be the gold standard as far as off-the-shelf raw distance is concerned.  While the majority of our testers that hit both clubs hit the N7 Tour farther, I personally hit the 9064LS 5 yards longer on average.  My tests alone certainly aren’t enough for me to call the Adams 9064LS the longest driver we’ve hit this year, but across the board it’s in the top 3, and that’s plenty to warrant an A-grade.

Distance Grade: A

My results, as well as anecdotal results from regular testers Dan and Kent suggest that the Adams 9064LS may very well be the most accurate driver we’ve tested this year.  Dan, who normally misses the centerline by somewhere in the neighborhood of 22 yards, found that number improved to 16 yards with the Adams.  With most clubs that I’ve tested, I generally find myself missing by 15-18 yards, with the Adams, I missed the centerline by 7.8 yards on average. The chart we use to assign a score for accuracy can be brutal, with nearly every yard off the center line chipping away at the score.  While no club has managed an A+, the final numbers for the 9064LS are as close as we’ve seen to date.

Accuracy Grade: A

GolfSpy T’s Range Chart:

While I harbor no illusions that I’ll never miss another fairway again, our results show the 9064LS is a fairway finder.  While Adams certainly deserves a ton of credit for pairing a very good head with an extremely high performing product, I’d be remiss if I didn’t suggest that some of that performance, and more specifically, the accuracy of the new Speedline, should be attributed to the Aldila RIP shaft.  I’ve found it to be extremely stable, especially during my less than elegant transition.  What is most impressive to me is that distance is not traded for accuracy. The 9064LS offers both without sacrificing either.

Subjective Rating

Looks

If I had one complaint about the looks of the Speedline Fast 10 it was that I’d have been happier without the teal sole.  Thankfully Adams has replaced the teal with black.  If fact, the 9064LS is practically all black.  The sole is black.  The crown is black.  The Aldila RIP shaft is black.  And of course, the Golf Pride grip is black.  If you’re the kind of guy who demands a splash of color with his golf clubs, the 9064LS probably isn’t right for you.  For the rest of us though, the color palette (or lack thereof) combined with a high-tech head that manages to both look traditional, and set up perfectly (neutral) at address, you’re unlikely to find a better looking driver.  If you could see the funky, scooped-out sole, the score might be lower, but for our testers – who threw around words like “sinister” and “bad-ass” while when describing the 9064LS – to a man, everyone thinks the Adams 9064LS looks great, and the majority (myself included) think, from butt to head, it’s the best looking driver we’ve seen this year.

Looks Grade: A+

Sound

Sound continues to be a tricky thing to quantify, as we still have a few testers who don’t care what a club sounds like.  Of course, when a couple of those guys tell us that the 9064LS sounds great, it makes us think there really might be something special about this club.  While I won’t declare the new Adams to be the best sounding driver of the year, it’s on the short list, and that alone makes it worthy of the ‘A’ our testers gave it.

Sound Grade: A

Feel

Not unlike sound, getting our testers to give us a meaningful rating for feel can be a bit tricky.  I’ve learned that the best way to do it is have them hit the test driver, then their driver, and then the test driver again.  Occasionally I’ll throw something else in the mix, but at least this way we can get a relative sense of things.  In the case of the Adams 9064LS, the majority of our testers thought it felt “fine”.  Then most hit their driver.  And then the Adams again.  In most cases, the Adams felt “great” the second time around.  Based on feel alone, I greatly prefer it to what’s in my bag now.  And I’m not alone.

When talking about shafts, guys often throw around words like “smooth” and “stable”.  Those certainly apply to the Aldila RIP shaft.  Moving back and forth between the Adams 9064LS and my current gamer (Nike VR STR8-FIT with a “made for” shaft) is night and day.  I definitely feel more in control with the RIP, where as the Nike VooDoo feels a bit whippy.  Despite being only a few CPMs apart in flex, the difference in feel is substantial, which if nothing else illustrates that when comparing shafts, flex only tells part of the story.

Feel Grade: A-

Value

I have three thoughts I’d like to share about value in general.  Firstly, the gross majority of drivers are overpriced.  Secondly, accepting my first point, the industry “standard” for driver pricing should be in the ball park of $300.  Thirdly, points one and two not withstanding, a driver (or any club for that matter) is worth whatever someone will pay for.  Reconciling the three into a coherent value judgement isn’t really that difficult, at least not where the Adams 9064LS is concerned.  With a retail price of now only $299 it far exceeds the cost of many name brand drivers we’ve tested this year.  Of course, it’s also a fair amount cheaper than others we’ve tested.  Factoring in the Aldila RIP shaft, and what we’ve come to believe are superior looks, feel, and sound, well, me and Adams are probably still about 8% apart, but at the end of the day, you could spend a more and do worse.  Actually, I’m guessing most of you have.

Value Grade:B+

>> Subjective Score: (37 out of 40)

SpecCheck Rating

For woods and hybrids, our current SpecCheck involves verifying length, Swing Weight, and Flex.  The Adams 9064LS measured exactly 45.5 inches, and came in within fractions of the specified D3 swing weight.

At 258 CPMs, the Aldila RIP Gamma fell right on the line for the leading edge of our stiff range.  In my mind, this is the rare shaft that actually feels stiffer than it is.  Of course, in this case, what I mean by stiff is actually stable.

Our Conclusion

It’s actually very difficult for me when a review turns out like this one did.  As you may have already discovered on your own, there are other golf blogs out there which habitually give great reviews to nearly every product they review. We are NOT one of those guys. We pride ourselves on our objectivity.  We’re not beholden to a single OEM, we’re not on anyone’s payroll, and I’m personally more than willing to make a little noise when a club doesn’t live up to its billing, or when the marketing information is silly, stupid, or just plain doesn’t make any damn sense.

For the most part, the majority of the clubs on the market today, look and perform…well…like most every other club on the market, which is why most of the clubs we review end up with B grades and scores in the mid-80s.  I suppose we could set our baseline at 95 instead of 85, but that doesn’t really allow much room for the cream to rise to the top.  Yeah, I hate glowing reviews because I’m always afraid that they convey some sort of bias.  They make me feel dirty, but the thing is, every so often, a club is truly worthy of a glowing review.

As far as our subjective scoring is concerned, not everyone is going to agree what looks good, what sounds good, and what feels good; except all of our testers did.  While individually some testers gave higher scores to other clubs, no single driver we’ve tested this year comes close to matching the Adams 9064LS as far as the opinions of our testers are concerned. If fact, save the most subjective of all of our categories, value, the 9064LS could easily have squeezed out enough points to become our first ever A+ driver.  If it was priced $50 less it would have.

With respect to performance, only the freakish PowerBilt Air Force One N7 has proven longer, and no driver we’ve tested this year has been, on average, more accurate for our pool of testers. Comparing the numbers to every driver we’ve tested this year, the 9064LS ranks 2nd in overall distance, and 1st in accuracy.  Wow.

We have a strict formula we follow to arrive at these scores, and the Adams deserves every bit of the A grade that it finishes with.  Normally I find myself wondering if we’ve been too generous with the points (maybe an A should be B+), but in this case I find myself wondering if I should be trying to find a couple more points to get the Adams 9064LS to the A+ level.  If you were to tell me I should, I probably wouldn’t argue.

I said at the beginning that I’d never hit an Adams driver that I loved.  That’s not true anymore.  Numbers aside, the Adams 9064LS is my personal favorite driver of 2010. While I can never be certain that somebody won’t send me something I like better tomorrow, right now the Adams is in my bag and will probably stay there until the snow falls.

I just purchased this driver on 3rd May 2013 during old stock clearance. Adams driver is not popular in Malaysia at all. But I was very tempted to purchase due to Mygolfspy’s review. So, when there was a 70% discount offer, I wasted no time to bag the driver (10.5 degree loft and Aldilla RIP stiff shaft). My first impression, the head with deep face was intimidating. Looked like a pro driver. But surprisingly after my first 18-hole, I found the driver to be quite forgiving. Most obvious trait was it hit much straighter than my other two drivers i.e Ping G15 and Cobra LD Speed. And I can still work the 9064LS both fades and draws. My Ping and Cobra are slight draw bias. In term of distance I rank all the three drivers in this order — Cobra, Adams, Ping. My flight mates also tested the driver. They were very surprise with the forgiveness. So, did I make the right purchase? I would say … I didn’t waste my money at all.

Ping45, to the best of my knowledge there is not really anything on MGS as far as a review , formal or otherwise on the F12…I would just google Adams Speedline F12 driver or F12LS if you want something on the adjustable driver…While I haven’t hit the F12, two of the pros in my swat play the LS & they love it..the one replaced his 9064 with it..Sorry I can’t be of more assistance, though there should be a lot of info out there..And please, my friends call me Richard…The best..Faiways & Greens 4ever…

I have had a couple 9064’s and find them to be outstanding, but would really like to learn more about the Fast 12’s. Can you help? With my thanks

Tim, without knowing anything about your swing it’s hard to comment because forgiveness is relative..I had the 9064 in my bag for a season & it’s currently my back up driver..If forgiveness is important to you, the F12 or F11 would be a better choice..The 9064 is a beast for distance though I would say that if your ss is less than 100mph that there are much friendlier drivers out there…The I20 replaced the 9064 in my bag & they are ver similar, at least to me..The I20 review was just posted…I’ve played with the RBZ Tour though I put the Ping back in my bag..Anyway, hope that this was helpful..Fairways & Greens 4ever…

I never heard of the 9064 driver until finding this review! I was gaming a Razr 9.5 fit with an oban devotion 6 shaft and wasn’t happy at all with the feel, dispersion, and especially the inconsistency. I decided to give this driver a try based on the overall score and review from Adams main site. I found one with the same Oban Devotion shaft and I’ve been in love ever since. I only have one round under my belt but I immediately noticed the decrease side spin (side spin too!), and the solid feel. The sound was indeed tingy but with all the fairways I hit and tight dispersion, I didn’t even notice. Definitely a keeper for me!!! Thanks MGS for your honest review.

Im a huge fan of this site. I currently own 2 Adams drivers. The 9064LS 9.5 Gamma, and the 9064LS DFS 9.5 Gamma. The sound on the DFS is completely different but still it gets the job done. I have had my share of slices, hooks and mis-hits with these drivers. However I can honestly say I hit more fairways and my drives are longer than any driver I have hit. If you are looking to make any purchase regarding golf, no matter if its clubs, training aids, or apparel read the reviews on this site first. I guarantee you will gain a huge amount of trust in their results. I tried the 9064LS simply because of this review. I also purchased a TourEdge CB4 3 wood, True Linkswear golf shoes, and the Clicgear 3.0 push/pull cart. I promise you every review on those items are dead on. They are all awsome products. Im also looking to buy the Wilson FG V2 irons. I would have never even looked at any of these items had it not been for the reviews. Thanks ya’ll so much and keep up the good work.

After reading the reviews on this driver on this site and other I’m now interested in adding this drive to my bag but not sure which RIP shaft to select. My ball flight is low and I use a stiff flex shaft. Which RIP 60 would be the better choice with a 10.5 degree loft…the GAMMA or ALPHA?

If you can grab a few swings on a launch monitor to check the launch angles I could give you a better answer, but in general: Gamma if you want to launch higher, Alpha if you want to go lower.

Ok. I’ve played 2 rounds with the new driver. When it’s on… IT’S ON. Drives over 250, sometimes 275, straight down the middle! Awesome feeling to watch the ball soar out of sight and hear the other guts ohhh in jealosy. Bad hits are still that, bad hits, but I’m thrilled about the driver. Oh, and bought it used for just $99. I hope the driver can improve my game as much as the reviews say the irons will. I’m a high handicapper… hit a decent drive with my square driver knockoff, 200+, but am worried I might have made a mistake. Someone reassure me!!!

After reading all the great reviews on the Adams 9064ls driver, I had to buy one this is my honest opinion…
I have gone through alot of drivers recently and ended up with a Ping g15 Serrano shaft which is a fairway finder but i have found this club up to 30-40 yards shorter than my old King cobra s91 pro s which was a beast of a driver but i couldnt controll it and it was wrecking my score card… Bought the Adams 9064ls and fell in love with the look , shaft, sound of the club pretty much every thing. To me it doesnt seem like a 460cc club head it looks smaller and as mygolfspy quoted it was a very forgiveing club i would have to tottally disagree.. I have found this club to be 5 yards longer of the tee than the cobra S91 pro S, but pretty much the bad shots are terrible. I have the stiff Alpha R.I.P shaft in mine and was wondering if i should of got a heavier shaft. Love the distance BUT will probably game the Ping as this really is the fairway finder I would choose better scores over distance any day. Would love tohear some feedback because im amazed at how many people have said the dispersion has been better than any other club I wish it was for me…

I’m lovin my 9064ls driver, its almost a year i have using it. Great driver, always ahead from my buddies with the other branded drivers, my longest drive is 280 yard (swing speed 95-100mph). but my problem is that what i have is the tour issue 9064 head. and when my swing is bad, i tend to hook my driver. could a retail version offers more forgiveness or even less? i love adams driver and i have just bought the fast 10 3 wood. easy from tee and the grass. saving to buy the adams a12 iron and hybrids.

I agree 100%. I bought the 9064LS gamma RIP somewhat on a whim but even standing over the club you get confidence, and that’s 90% of the game. I have been really impressed after a single round. I have played Adams hybrids for a few years and love the product. Steered away from other clubs by ego – the name. Shallow me. I love the hybrids and the driver…now looking at some irons. The MB2s review really well….and look great. Again, guys, this game is all about loving the gear and having confidence to use it. Now that;s where the enjoyment comes from. Spare me running the brand down. They make great quality products backed up with R&D.

In your Razr Hawk review you talk about people that completely ignore a brand because of some bias against it. Thats how i’ve always been with Adams. I’m 28 and the tight lies were just breaking onto the scene when i was a teenager. I just think of it as an old guy/weekend warrior brand. I’ve ignored almost every club of theirs. But after this review and the fact that you can pick these up on ebay for $150 I’m considering a test run. I’ll still be a little ashamed to have the headvover sticking out of my bag, but if it works I’m sure I’ll get over it. p.s. Love the site!

Bought the standard Adams Speedline 9064LS and am finding my drives in places on the fairway longer than ever before. Even with the 10.5o loft the boring trajectory gives me so much more roll. I play to a 9 and was having issues with spin off of my previous driver. The 9064 LS forgiveness has greatly helped with that (as advertised) and it’s really nice to see my ball rolling straight and far after touch down. I love this driver!

To quote your original review above….. “In fact, save the most subjective of all of our categories, value, the 9064LS could easily have squeezed out enough points to become our first ever A+ driver. If it was priced $50 less it would have.
Earlier this week I went to the Dallas PGATourSuperStore and tested on their machine the Adams 9064, Cobra S3, Ping I 15, Adams Super Speed, Callaway Razr Hawk and having NO preconceived notion came away from the test with numbers showing the Adams 9064 superior in all categories including length, spin, sound, feel and value. The best thing about it was the club had just been reduced to $199 new. I am not a shill for Adams and honestly would have spent whatever it took to find the absolute best club for my swing. I posted two weeks ago under the Cobra S3 review that I had just broken the head off my current driver and was still looking for a replacement Thanks for such a candid write up of your drivers. As I posted earlier I had already tested the Cobra S3 on a machine and came away with very good feelings but when I was able to test all these fine drivers side by side it became quite apparent that there was no comparison. I was also mistaken earlier about the sound of the 9064, it is absolutely fine, no tingy sound. Guess I have tested way too many drivers. The 9064 is now in my bag and having played my first round this week with it I can say if you in the audience do not test this club against what you currently are hitting or thinking about buying you would be doing yourself a great disservice. I have a 95 mph swing very similar to the numbers your tester Mark puts up and find that the 9064 hit it 9 yards further than the closest club in comparison and that the accuracy was amazing. Check it out folks.

Which shaft, David? It always seems we 95-97 mph guys are “between flexes”, with R being too whippy and S too stiff. I now have a Ping G5 with a Graphite Design VSQ-65, S flex, trimmed 1″ soft.

Just read this review today and was shocked to not see anything about side spin. I watched some video of Jamie Sadlowski and saw he used a Adams head, so I went to GGalaxy this past weekend looking for a 9032 to tryout used and found 1 9064LS in the whole store, R shaft rip60 gamma, put it up head to head with R11 tri, RAZR hawk, F11, G15 Ping, and used Fast 10 Stiff. They all went around 265-275 for me and relatively solid performers. What I could not believe was the reduced sidespin #s on the 9064LS. Almost every swing (90+%) was under 800rpm of sidespin resulting in a statistically significant reduction in off center yardage, most swings were under 500!. Typical sidespin was 1000-1500rpm on other clubs tested. Back spin was also reduced from 32-3500 to 21-2500 for me personally vs the other drivers. I’d love to find a used 9064LS to replace my FT-IQ. Great review, unbiased and I will be back to read more. Thanks Golfspy

I just bought one of these to try it out and I really liked it! $70 too! I’ll test it out on the course next week and see how it goes. Right now it doesn’t seem any longer, but the range goes back uphill and it was into the wind, but it is very easy to hit str8.

John – Last year we were doing a fair amount of experimenting with different ways to present the data, so although the scoring system remained constant, the presentation varied from review to review while we tried to discover what worked and what didn’t. This was simply one of those iterations of the presentation.

I definitely wish I could redo some of these older reviews with the new format, but it is what it is.

      John,

Unfortunately the newer review style requires a ridiculous amount of very specific formatting of data to generate those charts. At the time we reviewed the Adams, we didn’t store the data in the same manner we do now, so unfortunately it’s not possible to retroactively generate the graphical shot patterns.

I have three 9064LS drivers: 9.5 with Porject X 6.5, 9.5 with RIP Alpha 60X, and 8.5 with Voodoo XVS7. Love the 9.5’s, expecially with the Project x shaft. I get a nice mid to high trajectory with no ballooning and lots of roll. It’s at least as long (average 285-290 for me) as any driver I have ever hit…and that a LOT! The 8.5 with XVS7 hits low bullets, which is good in the wind, but I have to work really hard to get the most out of that combo….makes my 54 year old back hurt. Overall, with the right shaft for your swing, this is as good as any driver on the market and hands down better than most. Best of all, no gimmicky flight control add ons that most people never change. They are very affordable now. Try it. You’ll like it!

Is the 9064LS good for high handicapperr? How is it compared to the one with DFS?

Victor, I don’t know if I’d use your handicap as a determining factor as much as I’d use your swing. While there are perceived drawbacks to adjustable drivers vs. one piece(sound, feel, etc.), much like the “buttery feel” that so many talk about, I don’t feel it, at least with the drivers that I’ve tested. The DFS model does give you the length options via the sleeves(blue= 1/2″, red=1″) w/corresponding sole weight, which is also colored coded. I play mine @ 45″. I am not a fan of the “longer driver= longer distance” school for most golfers(95-98%). If they would work on hitting the ball on the center of club, they’d be amazed at the distance gains that they would see. That being said, if you want the flexibility of the length customization, go with the DFS. If not, stay w/the regular LS. The F11 is probably more forgiving than the 9064LS(MGS could probably answer this better than I), though you do have the longer stock shaft, which I had cut down to 45″, w/the appropriate tape added. This is my “back-up” driver’ & I’ve found it more foregiving than the LS w/DFS. The best way to find out is to hit them both(or all three if you look @ the F11). If possible, take them out & play them. But do not just judge them on one day, one session. Whatever your experience, good or bad, get a few sessions in on which to base your decision. If you have a fairly consistent, reproducable swing, I would give the 9064LS(or DFS) a serious look. If not, I might look to the F11(w/shorter shaft) or one of the other more forgiving drivers out there. Regarding driver shaft length, you can read Tom Wishon’s thoughts on many of the sights. The very best to ya….Greens & Fairways 4ever…………..

As always, top notch review!! You nailed it..I too, was not in the market for a driver when I saw the DFS model behind the counter @ a local pro shop. Although I do play the A7(17′) & Pro Black(20′) hybrids & the Pro Gold irons, I have been very happy w/my driver(TM Superfast 9.5′, 44.5″ Rifle PX 6.5). That is until I saw the 9064LS w/DFS. Beautiful driver..absolutely gorgeous, & I’ve never considered myself so superficial as to be swayed by looks(women aside..LOL). The Pro let me take it out to hit a few balls. The model that I hit was the 9.5′, RIP Gamma S. I made no adjustments, keeping the length @ 45′. The distance was outstanding, though what sold me was the ease in which I could work the ball. Although I play to a 4.2 handicap & play tournaments regularly, my normal ball flight is a slight draw. I have worked on a fade w/my driver, though I would say I am no better than 30-40%, & I do not attempt the fade in pressure situations. That may change soon. I still have work to do before I would be comfortable trying a fade in competition, though this driver has given me much more confidence. I know the drawbacks of the adjustable vs. one piece driver, though I must say, the DFS has a rock solid feel & nice sound @ impact. The only change that I made was to the RIP Alpha XS. So, if you’re in the market for a driver, you owe it to yourself to hit the 9064LS. It’s an accurate cannon!!

Wow. Excellent review, I think I just found a new favorite site.

Any comment on how it compares to the Speedline Fast 10? I currently have one in 9.5 deg stiff wasabi shaft and hit it low/mid trajectory. Was thinking I might like this driver better in a 44.5 due to it’s heaver stock swingweight (D3) vs. the Fast 10’s 46.125″ length @ D1. Not sure which shaft to go for, around 105ish swing speed.

Purchased the 9064ls in a *8.5 w/ RIP Alpha stiff shaft. I was able to go to the range a couple of times and played once before the weather turned. Extremly accurate and forgiving, which is more important than distance period, though I will say it was just as long as my ex- Callaway FT-Tour driver that I have since launched ! I was most impressed with tee shots into the wind, just bored right through, the spin has been greatly reduced that is a FACT. Some may perfer a different shaft, but ya need to give this driver a shot, before the other usual suspects !

I bought this club and could not hit it for the life of me last week. 9.5 degree, gamma stiff shaft. I swing slower than most and wondered if my swing speed was why I could not poke it out past 200 yards.

I since revamped my tempo as I discovered I was way off tempo at the top. Sooo, what a difference retooling that made.

Brought it out today and had no problems on most of the holes. Two drives were lower than I would like. My buddy hit it also on every hole to test drive it (I know, what a guy I am right??). He swings 100 mph on driver and crushed it several times with some spectacular ball flights… I had three really great 260 drives with it.

We both commented on how forgiving it was, how long it was…

ONE MORE THING… if you have hit Adam’s super black hybrids (2010 version), you know how solid the response and feel is of those clubs, right? Its so buttery and solid. Well this driver, when hit on the screws is kind of like that same hybrid solid impact feel we all have come to love. Great feel, great sound, Great all around.

I am keeping this driver. It is impressive. Glad I did not give up on it.

My buddy is now in the market to get one.

I have insomnia tonight so I thought Id come in here to share. Golf is my crack cocaine I guess. I picked the 9064 (gamma) up last week and was pained to discover that thus far, one bucket of balls, I can’t hit it at all. I could not poke it out past 220 yards! I was thinking the RIP shaft was too much for my driver swing speed (90ish mph, I swing my irons at avg 79 mph. I’m a 42 yr old 17 handicap male, not an old man). I just feel more in control slowing it down. Anyhow…! So yesterday, the 9015 I bought on ebay for like 30 bucks comes in the mail and I run out to go drool over it at the range. I hit the 9015 a few times and the 9015 goes a country mile. Hmmm. Now this golfspy review about the 9064 has me wondering if I was just having a really awful swing day when I tried to hit the 9064 last week.

I shall go and hit it again tomorrow and return back with my report!!

Also… I have played the Adams speedline fast10 draw driver w/ aldilo wasabi stiff flex shaft for about 6 months now. I usually hit that on the screws but the draw driver aspect of that club drives me nuts sometimes giving me a hook once in awhile…. and… I love to tinker with new toys, hence, the reason I have two new toys to play with. I am a good little golf consumer that way…

Well if you’re fine with a “heavy” (60 gram shaft that is pretty stout IMO) then go ahead. But if you’re looking for a distance and SS increase, Adams makes a corresponding driver to the 9064LS that’s lighter called the 4G UL (same price and $100 rebate at participating stores): http://www.tgw.com/customer/category/product.jsp/SUBCATEGORY_ID/15715/refScid/1086/sattr0/Gender/sattrVal0/mens It has a lighter shaft available in a Regular-Lite flex if you’re interested.

I love the 9064LS. The only thing that has me turned away at the moment is the Aldila shaft that comes stock. Don’t get me wrong, it is an excellent shaft. The fact that it is 60 grams is what has kept it in my closet replaced with a heavier driver. 60 grams is way too light in my opinion especially for an X flex. Normally shafts get heavier when they get stiffer, but not in the case. The Aldila RIP is a great shaft and I am currently looking for the tour prototype 80 gram shaft on the market to replace the other with. With saying all this, the 9064LS has been my favorite driver thus far due to its looks, feel, and stability. Once the shaft is replaced it’s game on.

I bought this driver yesterday and took it to the track and found it to be 20 yards longer than my titelist D2 and Ping G15. More important, it was VERY accurate, consistently finding the fairway. Shot a 77 from the tips with an 7.7 handicap. The Titelist and Ping are now in club graveyard, my trunk.

On the first hole I mis-hit it and to my surprise drilled a straight boring liner 260 down the midde. My Taylor would have been 240 in the rough. By the 5th hole when I was warmed up I was hitting majestic 300 yard bombs down the middle! This driver is incredibly forgivng and long. I have a very medium trajectory on my drives, neither high nor low. My last four Drivers have all been 8.5’s. just curious if I should stay with that or not when choosing the 9064LS Driver.

In general (but not for everyone), the average launch angle was a bit higher than the bulk of what we’ve tested, but certain nothing substantially higher about it (half a degree give or take). Like any club, it comes down to custom fitting and playing a bit of mix and match between the loft of the head, and the characteristics of the shaft. In my case, the Gamma has proven to be a good shaft, but I’d definitely would have liked to compare it head on with the Alpha model.

@Michael, as far as I understand it, Adams uses the “real” Aldila RIP shafts. Unlike many other OEMs, Adams generally doesn’t go the “made for” route.

      Reply

      Pablo

They are the real deal, plus Adams offers 2 different RIP shafts for this driver that are both in the 60-gram range. The Gamma (orange eyes) is like a mid-high launch shaft. The Alpha (red eyes) is a low, low-mid launch shaft with torque somewhere around 2.8 and 2.9, so it’s a stiff shaft. With the Alpha, it’ll probably be a mid launch driver and the Gamma launches it a little higher. So depending on the type of shaft you usually use, you could go for an Alpha, Gamma, or any other custom shaft.
**Just saw that the Mod said Alpha, but this can clarify for Joseph the difference I guess. =)

It’s great that this driver got great reviews, but it probably should be A+. You said if it were at least $50 less than it is ($379-$50= $329) it would likely get A+. But nearly ALL golf retailers are offering $100 rebate on the full price ($379-$100=$279!), and Adams’s track record with rebates shows that they usually keep it going until the club goes on sale and pending a retail replacement. I’m just hoping you take that important and well-known fact into consideration, in no way am I mad. Just pointing out the $10 rebate like they’d had with the 9032LS driver and other clubs.

We are aware of the rebates, but since they come and go (sometimes quickly), when we do our testing and collect our feedback, we have to base our questions on the retail price at the time. Your point is valid, but at the same time, my thinking is, rather than play these rebate and gift card games, manufacturers should price the clubs appropriately from day 1.

( you should review the positive putters, positiveputter.com). I am a plus handicap golfer.
Well, I broke the face of my tour issue driver in a tourney hitting it from the rough, there was a rock out of sight and it punched a hole in the face, stupid I know.
I admire and resect your reviews so much I bought a tour issue Adams 9064 LS head on ebay without ever hitting one, it was a great deal @ $154.90. I paired it with the matrix ozik tp 6 hd stiff shaft. I hit my r9 tp about 250 to 270 but had a hook of about 25 yards at times which was troubling. The Adams 9064 LS, my first ever Adams club, is dead strait as your review lead me to expect. I hit it about the same I may have gained about 5 yards with the cold it is hard to say for sure. I can hit about a 5-10 yard draw or fade with it. The looks, sound and feel are top teer.

I love and curse you because now I am thinking about getting fitted for the Miura irons based on how much you have raved about them. I always told myself my kzg irons were as good as they are but I also considered Mizuno clubs to be the equal of KZG. Since you have Mizuno clubs and feel that the Miura clubs are much better I am tempted now… Bastard! Thanks for such a great review sight. I would donate but now I am saving up for the new irons… I will help support you after I get them. Let me know how much you like tham when you have had the chance to put a few rounds on them. I have several rounds with the 9064 ls already and it will be a keeper. Have you played both kzg and miura? If yes, what difference would you say there is? I have enjoyed my kzg’s for 5 years but if the change would be significant I would make one last change. I have been told that all three brands are forged in the same factory, is that true, and if so what would make the significant differences? In a blind test before I bought my kzg’s I tryed about 50 different clubs with the backs taped to keep my from being influenced. I chose two of the same kzg irons with different finishes and the mizuno mp 32. Since I like two of the same club I went with them. Will the Miura’s make a noticable difference?

I have a question. Why do you tape the face and sole.? Tape slows the spin rate. So you aren’t getting correct readings. Less spin means less slice and hooking effects. Tapes slows spin rate, so on the higher lauched drives would get you more distance. Makes the driver several swing points heavier. Why do you about how much it weighs coming from the OEM? Your testing procedures are flawed do to the tape. Are you testing the driver or you trying to resell the driver? Get rid of the tape and give out true readings. Hitting off a mat ,all you should have to worry about are sky marks. Sky marking a driver is something only a hack would do

Magoo – As it states in the review, we tape the crown and the sole, not the face. Since our testers come from a range of handicaps, and most will admit that bad swings can happen to anyone, we protect the clubs to ensure that they look the same for all of our testers. We don’t want anyone’s opinion being swayed by a skymark.

As far as swing weight goes, we check swing weight prior to taping the clubs, so our measurements reflect how the club was shipped from the manufacturer. The tape itself ads about 2 swing weights (the difference between D3 and D5), which most knowledgeable golfers will tell you is nearly imperceptible.

Boy BluMagoo, you obviously didn’t test well with your reading and comprehension. Crown and Sole is much different than the FACE. The notion that a sky mark is something only a hack might do is funny too. My guess is that you have probably put a sky mark or two on a club in your lifetime. I don’t know many people who haven’t at some point in their lifetime. In any case, if you are ever in Nashville let me know so I can bring my sky mark driver over and play you for some skins. I currently own th 9032ls. I average 250 with it. I can’t wait to try the 9064ls. Thanks for a objective review.

thanks so much for doing this review. I’ve been in love with the looks of this driver since I first saw it months ago. Been waiting for someone to do a good review. I had the 9032LS and I felt like I lost distance and could not hit it straight compared to my TM r7 limited (although I think the shaft was not stiff enough for me, to be fair). Looking forward to hitting this one soon.

MGS – I’ve been trying to find some meaningful information on the differences between the Alpha and Gamma shafts. The most consistent info out there suggests the Alpha (red eyes) is the lower launch / lower spin shaft, whereas the Gamma (yellow eyes) is the hugher launch / higher spin shaft.

Recognizing this awesome review is of a Gamma shaft model, could you confirm that my understanding is correct?

This is for the Alpha, straight from Aldila’s website (frequency in cpm, torque in degrees, weight, launch):

      RIP 60 Wood
      R 245 3.2 62g. Low-Mid
      S 260 2.9 63g. Low-Mid
      X 275 2.7 66g. Low-Mid

      RIP 70 Wood
      R 245 3.0 74g. Low-Mid
      S 260 2.7 74g. Low-Mid
      X 275 2.4 77g. Low-Mid

      Gamma:

      R
      245 3.7 62g. Mid-High

      S
      260 3.4 63g.Mid-High

      X 275 3.0 66g. Mid-High

Based on the above, you would be correct. Apparently, there’s a green-eyed Beta floating around, but I can’t find anything out about it, other than it’s the mid-launch version. The info on the Gamma came from an Ebay listing… Aldila’s website doesn’t have anything other than the Alpha listed.

“when comparing shafts, flex only tells part of the story”. That’s where torque comes in. If the Nike VooDoo felt “whippy”, it’s most likely (since there are no hardline guarantees) because it has a higher torque value than the RIP you tested. While having the correct loft and face angle for your swing is the most important criterion, having a shaft that’s the right torque for your swing mechanics will only enhance the hitting experience.

What is the comparison to the Insight 9015d? Length has changed in this model which will surely affect distance…….. Unsure if I should upgrade, any suggestions apart from testing as left handed Adams equipment in Australia is like water in the sahara…… Any help would be much appreciated.

Hard to give exact apples to apples comparison since our new review system came after the 9015D…and I don;t want to steer you the wrong way. But if you get a chance to test this driver I would…it scored higher then any other driver we have tested to date with the new system. But that 9015D was a great driver.

Have you guys by any chance tried the Adams Speedline 9064LS DFS (their adjustable driver, which includes shaft length adjustability)?? If so how does it stack up against the competition?

Unfortunately Adams only sent us the one driver for testing this time around. While I would be curious to see how the adjustable driver performs, what we’ve seen with some other drivers where both adjustable and non-adjustable heads are available – the adjustability comes at the cost of sound and feel.

Although this reply is way late in the game, hopefully better late than never… I initially hit both the standard LS & the DFS before settling on the DFS model…I probbably hit 150-200 balls & played 9 holes w/each..Both had the RIP Alpha XS shaft w/a 9.5 ‘ loft…My reasoning was the clubs felt the same and I liked the flexibility that the adjustability gave me, especially the ability to change the shaft length(45″, 45.5″ or 46″) and the loft(+1′ or -1’)….The problem was that I had a preconcieved bias towards the DFS in that I REALLY wanted it to feel better so I confirmed my bias & bought the DFS…In reality the regular LS has a much “fuller” feel if there is such a thing..The DFS felt “hollow” & this included the sound…My distance & direction was fine with the DFS although I was never totally comfortable with it…You know the end of the story….I swapped the DFS out for the standard LS in June & the honeymoon hasn’t ended yet…GREAT driver…It’s going to take something spectacular to move it out of my bag, though I don’t mean to diminish the DFS… Yet if it’s adjustability that you are looking for, there are better options out there than the DFS…For a one piece Player’s driver, there are none better than the LS…Just my humble opinion…Greens & Fairways 4ever……

My reply below(09/13/11) contradicts my previous reply to Victor’s question(03/10/11) regarding the standard 9064LS vs. the 9064LS w/DFS(adjustable)…I apologize for this though as I stated below, I was guilty of comfirmation bias in that I wanted the DFS to be the “better” club, so this is what I saw, felt, heard, etc…I still can’t tell “butter” from margerine either @ the table or on the course, though I can feel & hear “hollow”….Greens & fairways 4ever…..

I have had both drivers and I can tell you that the 9015D is probably slightly longer in terms of distance, and has better sound. In terms of forgiveness the 9064 blows the 9015D away. With its open face, the 9015D is punishing from a forgiveness standpoint, and also very ugly.

I would take a 9064 over my old 9015D any day of the week, if I was a tour player I would play the 9015D.

I would agree with your response P-Gunna in regards to accuracy for sure. The 9015D was very long but not as accurate. Thanks for your input.

What does “longer in terms of distance” mean? What else could longer refer to but distance?

IMO the 9064ls is more forgiving and launches higher than 9015d. Same low spin.

Personally, I’m just not interested in a company who is essentially absent on the PGA and European Tours and, predominantly, designs products for seniors and women. I’m also a bit struck by the declaration of this being an attractive driver. I find it to be very unpleasant to look at, inspiring anything but confidence from its overly aggressive, unauthentic appearance. I’m thinking the the life stage of the folks who evaluated this driver are all under 35… which most golfers are not.

Al, with all due respect, your comment is extremely narrow minded & foolish, & if you look @ my comments on this or any other site, I have never taken an adversarial stance w/other comments, because I adhere to the school of thought, “to each his own.” Yet, I’ve passed over your comment for the better part of 4+ months and maybe it’s just I woke up on the wrong side of the bed today, because I had to respond….Number 1, from a PGA visability standpoint, Adams has a nice staff assembled. I am glad that they don’t adhere to the marketing strategy of “buy a bag.” As Ryan Moore, one of their staffers said, he didn’t carry their bag until he was comfortable with their clubs & actually PLAYING them. Many of the tour pros have bag deals that do not include anything in the bag. This is a sham, & I’m glad that Ryan called attention to it. Furthermore, Adams has the most widely played(that means #1) hybrids on tour. More than #2 & #3 combined, and roughly 1/2 of those players are not getting paid a dime. That says something, both about Adams & the player! PGA visabilty has more to do with corprate bank account & strategic direction than club quality. Instead of buying players, Adams puts that money into R&D and that’s why, regardless of whether you play their clubs or not, you will not find a poorly designed or shoddily manufactured club. The same cannot be said for Callaway, Taylor Made, or Nike. Their A7(& A4 before it) are as fine a game improvemnt iron as you will find. I’ve played Mizuno for 25+ years, & I swithed to their Pro Gold irons(forged). Simply put, these are player’s irons that can go toe to toe w/any iron on the market. A well struck ball off of these is unbelievable. Their hybrids need no endorsement from me. As for their drivers, specifically the 9064LS, this is a player’s driver & looks the part. I have never hit, much less owned, an Adams driver(or fw metal), though after hitting the 9064LS w/DFS, I put it, along w/the F11 3w, in my bag. Oh yea, I’m 51yo, not under 35yo, so much for that high intellect barometer for judging a review. Having hit & bought the LS prior to reading Mike’s review, I was very impressed w/his thoroughness & accuracy. The only slight dissagreement I might have might be on value, where I think an adjustable driver(or any driver) of this quality @ $379 is a great value, but again, this is subjective & he acknowledged as much. Bottom line, it was a great review. You will not find better, & if you do, please forwrd me the site, because I & I’m sure others would love to read it. I play to a handicap of 4 @ a club that is a past(2003) host of the U.S. Men’s Amateur & three men that I play with who I let hit the LS, went out & bought Adams(though one bought the F11(their handicaps are 5, 2.2 & +3). So regarding your comments about Adams being for seniors & women, bro, simply put, Adams clubs are for players. Period. Nuff said. Greens & fairways 4ever………

Just because these clubs are not necessarily well advertised does not mean they’re underrated. When testing irons I found the Adams to be one of the better irons along with Wilson Staffs. I ended up buying Taylormade mcs (only because they are an amazing set of irons) but after hitting their irons, I am now very tempted to invest in their other clubs (woods and hybrids). Thanks for your comments and opioids Richard.

GREAT answer. I’ve been struggling with finding a driver for months, and went to several places trying to get “fitted”, but left without any satisfaction. Then a young pro put me on a machine, indoors, then suggested we go to an outdoor range. I had three drivers, none of which I was happy with. He brought out three heads and a dozen shafts, and began to “build” different drivers, having me hit each one several times, then tweeking the tool. Finally, I started hitting shot after shot dead straight at my target, and obviously longer than my own clubs. Yes, it was an Adams 9064LS, and I have one on order. I asked about moving the “specs” to another brand, but frankly, none offer this kind of adjustment and feel. Never would have considered Adams if I hadn’t seen (and felt) the proof.

I tend to try most of the new drivers that come out each year. I have played all of the Taylormade drivers from R7 through R11, also Ping G10 and G15 and Titleist 907, 909, and 910 series. I most recently custom ordered a Callaway RAZR Hawk Tour 9.5 with Diamana Kai’Li 70X shaft. I have to honestly say that the 9064LS is the best head of the bunch and the stock RIP 60X shaft is a great match for it. I am currently in the process of pulling the Kia’Li and Miyazaki shafts from other heads and putting 9064LS heads on them. The combination of distance, forgiveness, and accuracy the 9064LS gives just cannot be beaten in my opinion. If you give this driver a fair test, you will want to buy it!

Best “put down” I’ve read ever …. I’ve adams hybrids and they are stupidly easy to hit I also had the opportunity to try out a demo Adams CMB iron, a hard find in the UK and these irons are great and I’ve played Mizzies all my days.

      KMCA,

      Hey there!

      Thanks for droppin in :)

It was not intended as a putdown as much as I didn’t want some younger or newer players to the game to read it and discount Adams because of such a narrow, misguided & close minded opinion ;)

Anyway, I too have played Mizzy since ’86 cept for ’09 with the Pro Golds.

Well, have a great season Bro-

Seems silly to think only Calloway, Taylor M, Nike and the other golf marketing hogs are the only ones that make a good club. Tight Lie hybrids have been on tour for years and having recently purchased this driver I for one can say it looks amazing and hits beautifully. Now we all have opinions and no one opinion can stand for everyone. But I love this club and saved a bundle on Rockbottomgolf by naming my own price. I dont need the looks of the club to inspire confidence in my driving, just the results, and this club produces em as well as my Bertha used to.

I’m with you 100% of the way Mike. I had never found an Adams driver that I really liked, which is why I probably wouldn’t have given this one a serious look if it hadn’t showed up on my doorstep. While I’m sure some of the Adams fans out there aren’t the least bit surprised, I was shocked how well this club performed for me.
