First Look: ECCO CAGE PRO Golf Shoe

The 20 Second Intro:

Model: ECCO Cage Pro Spikeless Shoe
MSRP: $210 laced, $230 BOA
Availability: Now

ECCO says the golf shoe market is nearly evenly split between spiked and spikeless (technically, it’s 51%-49% in favor of spiked, but we’re still waiting for some rural precincts to report). ECCO is fine with that, since it’s happy to sell you both.

ECCO made its bones with spikeless – or what they call hybrid – shoes back in 2010 thanks to Fred Couples’ run at the Masters. And even though the company has come out with several spiked shoes over the years, the ECCO brand is still primarily associated with spikeless.

Today ECCO continues that tradition with the introduction of the newest model in its spikeless lineup: the ECCO CAGE PRO.

ECCO CAGE PRO -1

What’s New?

There’s plenty going on with the ECCO CAGE PRO, but the one detail you can’t miss is on the bottom. Most spikeless shoes feature an array of nubs and protrusions in varying patterns, but ECCO’s new SPYDR-GRIP® outsole can officially be described as different.

ECCO Cage Pro Outsole

At first glance you might find yourself wondering if Peter Parker has joined ECCO’s design team, but ECCO’s says the design has a purpose. The SPYDR-GRIP® sole is engineered for optimal grip and traction at your foot’s natural pivot points.

Who knew our feet pivoted so much?

It’s a radically different sole for ECCO – and for anyone this side of Nike, for that matter. Close inspection suggests the nubs appear to be a tad deeper than previous ECCO models, but only a tad, and while the web-like pattern appears random to the casual observer, ECCO says every detail is by design.

ECCO CAGE PRO - 2

Anyone who’s ever used spikeless shoes (or spiked, for that matter) knows the heartbreak of sole-clogging, especially when you’re out early enough to chase the mowers. ECCO claims the unique SYPDR-GRIP pattern actually helps to self-clean the outsole and minimize clogging.

Once the snow melts here in Minnesota we can put that to the test.

Other Features

This is the first spikeless shoe to feature ECCO’s cage technology. It’s a one-piece direct-injected polyurethane stability frame – or cage – that wraps from the heel, through the midsole, all the way to the toe. It’s designed to help the shoe form to your foot and maximize stability. ECCO says the heel cage keeps your heel in place during the swing, while allowing the forefoot to move naturally.

ECCO CAGE PRO - 3

The leather upper is treated with ECCO’s HYDROMAX® technology to keep your feet dry.

And what may be the biggest news, the ECCO CAGE PRO and it’s spiked cousin, the new ECCO CAGE, will both be the first ECCO shoes equipped with the BOA enclosure system.

ECCO Cage Pro BOA

The ECCO CAGE PRO in the laced version is available today on ECCO’s website, listing at $210.00 and is available in Black, White, Camel and Concrete.

The BOA version is also available today and has a slightly different look. It comes in Black and Shadow White, listing at $230.00.

Thoughts on the new ECCO’s…

Too out there, or does it have your attention?

i bet they are comfy and love the BOA system…but these dawgs are super ugly to me. not a style that works and unfortunately I bet they don’t do so well with this line.

I have wide feet with high arches. Ecco has always been the most comfortable golf shoe I can find. Comfortable right out of the box. Not everybody needs a roomy toe box but if you do, Ecco is your shoe. Comfort first, performance 2nd, durability 3rd, price least important. I will be buying the Cage Pro Boa shoe.

Replaced 2 year old Hybrids that were very comfortable…after 2 rounds…the spydr grip does provide more stability and “grip”, comfort seems the same, the BOA provides consistent fit/snugness. Wife doesn’t like the looks but it’s no real concern to me. The new sole provides best grip since changing from spikes years ago, that’s what I was looking for.

I walk 75% of my rounds and wear Eccos. They’re incredibly comfortable and quite durable.

I could definitely see myself wearing a pair of these! I like the white pair however I would love them if they came with blue trim over the lime.

I fancy the fact that those are spikeless. Might give them a consideration once those drop in price.
Just a shame that they made a mess out of the BOA shoe because this is dead ugly.

I like Ecco comfort but agree pricing is starting to drive me away, especially with the great reviews on Footjoy SL/Pro and the puma total ignite.

I’m really tired of the inflated prices for golf shoes. I will wait and see on the “Cage” design. Ecco became popular with Fred Couples, but come-on man! The basic Ecco spikeless is just like a $50. running shoe, not $200. I do like their shoes for comfort, but I try to find them at discount and close-out prices.

I love ECCO shoes and they are what I play. This model however will never see my closet. It may have great stability but that outer heel cage is butt ugly. They should have hidden the cage inside the the shoe.

That last picture of the ECCO with the silver lines on the top……those lines don’t go all the way to the rubber sole surround makeing it look like two things have happened.

      1. A manufacturing defect

      2. Someone who is accustom to writing on their Chuck Taylors decided to get into golf and brought their silver marker with them.

Lastly I will say that I like the webbed bottom….but how often do you get to see those ?

Let me try again, since I was laughing too hard thinking about you crusty old farts getting bent…

These shoes look like butt. Only old guys with towels hanging off their belt loops would wear this trash. Can’t wait for more Jordan’s to drop so you old farts and racists can let a few more fear nugs drop in your winter obesity shorts

Are Ecco’s really that much better than everything else that they are worth $200 plus?

I’m not sure I could keep the Cage clean. I like the sole design. I’d give them a try, but they would seriously have to be on sale before I buy them.

Ecco, spikeless and BOA sound like a winning combination. I definitely can’t wait to see these at the PGA Show in a couple weeks.
