First Look: FootJoy Pro/SL Spikeless Golf Shoe

Here’s your first look at the Pro/SL, the latest spikeless offering from FootJoy.

Less what’s generally called a crossover (a golf shoe suitable for wear on and off the course), and more a real golf shoe with admittedly non-traditional spikes, the Pro/SL is already one of the most popular shoes across all of the worldwide professional tours.

footjoy-pro-sl-13

FootJoy estimates that roughly 60 of its staffers, including Adam Scott, Louis Oosthuizen, and Andrew “Beef” Johnston, are wearing the shoe. That’s an impressive stat considering:

  • FootJoy staffers are free to choose any shoe in the FootJoy catalog (and it’s a big catalog)
  • The Pro/SL hasn’t been in the catalog particularly long

Adam Scott is particularly impressed by the Pro/SL’s versatility.

“I tested Pro/SL initially in the very dry, hard conditions of Chambers Bay then in the soft, wet conditions at St. Andrews and the traction was fantastic on both surfaces. I also felt like my feet had more surface contact with the ground and for a longer time during my swing, so competing in this shoe is a no-brainer.”  – Adam Scott

Scott is far from alone in his assessment. Tour Pros have moved to the Pro/SL so quickly that FootJoy moved up its release due to its emerging popularity. What good is a popular tour shoe if the consumer can’t buy it, right? Well, now you can.

Pro/SL Features

As far as features go, the Pro/SL is billed as a spikeless shoe that looks and performs like a real (spiked) golf shoe.

The upper is made from ChromoSkin leather by Pittards. The rest of the shoe is built largely from FTF (Fine Tuned Foam), which FootJoy says is 10% lighter than the more common EVA material.

The first layer is soft for cushioning and comfort. The second layer is firmer for support and balance during the swing. Finally, the spikeless outsole is made from durable TPU that FootJoy (and Adam Scott) say provides traction in both wet and dry conditions.

As you’d expect from FootJoy, the Pro/SL comes with a 2-year waterproof warranty.

Testing Underway

The FootJoy Pro/SL is currently in testing. Preliminarily, comfort and traction have been excellent. More details to come.

They look OK, but FJ shoes and my feet don’t get along well. It’s been quite a while since I tried FJ; maybe they have changed, but I think I’ll stick to my Trues.

I love mine, and they are the first ones that I have bought with Boa. They are very comfortable and was really surprised with the Boa. Loved spikeless but with the spike like secureness.

I find these ‘Old people shoes’ comments ridiculous. I doubt you’ll find any wearers of the Pro/SL on the Champions Tour and Im pretty confident that any older golfers if they saw these in a store would walk straight past them. Ive been a wearer of the Dryjoy Casuals for 2 seasons now and at no point have I ever felt that I’ve experienced a round where I wished I had a spiked pair of shoes. If I’m honest I feel have gained improved traction with the ground since I got them. I don’t think it’ll be likely I’ll buy another pair of spiked shoes in the near future

The old people/nurse comments wasn’t about the fact that they are spikeless. Heck I’m a 4 cap and I golf in Asics running shoes. It’s about the quasi-white with diamond quilting on the side, and about how the upper meets the sole in the rear. Its no exaggeration to suggest that these look like you would be pushing a food cart through a hospital. And honestly, the fact that 16 people above all said they look like they look like old folks/nurse shoes must mean something. Nearly 50%.

FootJoy has the ugliest shoes hands down. It’s a shame because they seem to have some great golf shoes from both a comfort and innovative features standpoint, but I couldn’t wear em. For some perspective I wear Nike Lunar Control 4’s…

I just recived my pair this week and wore them for 9 holes one afternoon. While they are comfortable, it wasn’t the walking on air feeling I had hoped for. Then I noticed they were 14M and I have wide foot, so I’ll have to see if they will switch them out for the 14W.

The initial feel when they went on was very good, and as Tony said, they are incredibly stable. I just think the more I walked in them especially late in the day my foot swelled a bit and I need my normal W size.

I have the freestyle now and I would consider a spikeless. This release needs to be in black. White shoes don’t do to well with me and they look like crap after a month. Overall, I will wait till the price goes down. I bought the freestyle in store for 75$ almost a month ago.

Love the look, I’ve been wearing only True Links the past few seasons, but they are becoming harder to find in stores. Would love to hear if these new FJ are similar in terms of comfort.

It’s been a while since I’ve worn Truelinks so I’m not certain how much they’ve evolved. That said, I’d say the FJ FreeStyle is closer in comparison to the TRUEs that I’ve worn in the past. The Pro/SL has a bit more stability. It’s really comfortable, though. Out of the box, I walked 18 holes over hilly terrain without a hint of trouble.

It does have an occasional squeak to it. It will be interesting to see if that fades with break-in.

I have a pair of FJ DNA’s and I love the comfort and function but they too have a squeak that I was hoping went away. I’ve been using them now for the whole season at least once a week and they still squeak.
