Mizuno’s First Adjustable Driver

This is a Mizuno story, and I’m leading with the driver. You can file this under It’s about F’n time.

The guys at Mizuno have finally gotten around to creating an adjustable driver; joining the ranks of…well…everyone…accept maybe Wilson who, by the way, will also be releasing an adjustable driver this season.

I believe that’s everyone.

We can argue all day about whether or not anybody really needs an adjustable driver (I know…just get properly fit). We can argue over whether or not they actually do what they say (does loft really change). And we can certainly argue about whether or not it’s all pointless anyway because the average guy simply doesn’t understand what the various adjustments actually do.

We can argue all day and it won’t matter. When you’re the odd man out – one of the last…if not the last…golf company of sizable consequence not to offer an adjustable driver you could be seen by the average golfer as lagging behind.

Even if the average golfer doesn’t need it, you still have to offer it…at least when you’re playing at Mizuno’s level.

How Does It Work?

While we don’t have details yet, I’m not expecting anything revolutionary from an adjustment standpoint. Past Mizuno releases also suggest that retail options will be limited (I doubt we’ll see an 8.5° model for example). In case it matters to you, Mizuno is calling their adjustment technology “Quick Switch”.

One of the more important aspects of Mizuno’s new driver is what I’m willing to bet is a replaceable weight screw. Unlike some others, I don’t expect Mizuno will be telling any sort of associated ball flight story. Instead, the replaceable weight is for swing weighting purposes, which again, while lost on the average golfer should allow the experimental gearhead types to try shafts of different lengths and weights…assuming they have the proper plug.

The JPX-EZ Woods lineup also includes fairway woods and hybrids. I’m just spit-balling here since it’s not clear from the images, but my guess is they’re not adjustable. Unlike drivers, adjustable fairways and hybrids, while more common, haven’t evolved to the point where not offering adjustability stinks of antiquation.

And Yes . . . There are Irons Too

It’s Mizuno, so of course the JPX-EZ line includes irons.

The photos released so far suggest a game-improvement iron (a given for all irons in the JPX series). Like the newly announced MP-54, the EZs feature a pocket cavity design, so you can expect a story about the repositioning of discretionary weight, and perimeter weighting for maximum forgiveness.

As with the driver, I’m not expecting anything ground-breaking in terms of the technology, but we’re still talking about a Mizuno iron…a grain flow forged Mizuno iron. While there’s still a segment of golfers who believe that forged irons…any forged irons are more difficult to hit than basically any cast iron, Mizuno’s commitment to offering forged irons for what most of the industry still regards as a non-forged audience.

Mizuno almost never misses when it comes to irons, so my guess is the JPX-EZ irons will continue what Mizuno started with the JPX-800 series. While it’s not easy to shake the reputation of producing irons exclusively for better players, the EZ irons are clear evidence that Mizuno is serious about game improvement.

Have Your Say

  • Does the introduction of an adjustable driver change the way you think about Mizuno woods?
  • What’s your initial response to the JPX-EZ Irons?
  • And while I’m asking questions…does anybody else think it’s weird that all of a sudden Mizuno is using oranges and golds while TaylorMade’s SLDR (and presumably more of the 2014 line) is blue?

I was Mizuno custom fitted and purchased the JPX EZ Forged 4-PW irons, coming from a nice set of Ping i20’s which were great! After a nice Mizuno demo session-the JPX EZ Forged irons emerged as winners. The tweaking to perfection for me was priceless! The specs are similar to the Pings (KBS Tour X soft stepped, +1/2 in) with the only difference I’m now 3 degrees upright as the fitted Pings were yellow dot. I am looking forward to playing many great rounds with the new Mizzys! The distance/control is awesome! These are strong clubs and the mishits behave well. Even demo’d MP series irons et al., but the computer indicated I was most consistent with the JPZ EZ Forged versions. Most happy and back playing golf and having big hit fun! (Scoring is lower too!) See ya over in the Mizuno forums for ongoing feedback!

These EZ irons look great, until you set them down at address. The topline is fat fat fat. I have the JPX825 Pro where the topline is beveled to hide some thickness, but there’s no attempt in the EZ to hide that fat topline. If that doesn’t bother you, then good for you. It bothers the heck out of me. I still say that when technology finally allows for a blade size head with flex faces and a tad of forgiveness, watch out! That company will make some money. A small, nice looking, nice feeling, game improvement club for the golfer who finds the sweet spot but would like to take advantage of new technology. An update to an ancient iron design—because that is what blade-sized muscle backs and cavity backs are—played by better players is needed. Only a company that has big enough resources and the spirit of innovation can lead the way for a small minority of golfers. The buzz from them will attract the mid to high handicappers too.

Love Mizuno. I try not to be to vain and superficial but I’d have a hard time playing a forged iron (dint care if it’s gi) that says EZ on it. FORGED and EZ shouldn’t be on the same club.

Just got fitted for the EZ forged irons, steel shafts. Tried the MP64, TaylorMade Speedblades, Titleist AP2, Cleveland 588CB. Came down to Speedblades, 588CB and the EZ. The EZ was 5-10m longer than the 588CB and as long as the Speedblade. Feel was lots better vs Speedblade, as was control, so went for the EZ. Actually hit the 4 iron the straightest of all the irons, but not any longer than the 6, so just got 6-PW. Very happy. Great feel, nice distance, excellent value. Can’t wait to take them on the course.

Have played three rounds w/jpx ez driver 10.5 std adjstmnts. The feel of this wood blew me away. Gained 15/18 yds no doubt !! Felt like Armour persimmon (some of us do remember the feel). Orange doesn’t bother me, I’m not a Tenn. fan. Results count, this got it done!! Now I might try to fine tune w/adjsts. But I start w/std satisfaction

I tried the new driver last night at a demo night at my local range (Brisbane, Australia). I’ve recently had a lesson and have tweaked my swing which has helped me hit the ball better (18 handicap and coming down) and this driver was the most consistent driver I have tested in ages. Balls went dead straight except for a couple that were off centre a bit. There was no slice or hook, good height and long penetrating ball flight. The friend I was with said to get my cheque book out, it’s the best he’d seen me hit a driver before.

Loved the look of the JPX blue, orange sucks so very bad and so unMizuno,,,, want them but can’t deal with the pumpkin color scheme, will wait for the blue version upgrade,,, Callaway leaned you can’t sell green with extreme, Taylormade had to make the R-1 black, and Adams White Supers were a flop because of the goofy paint scheme. Marketing is about consistent brand image, they really have to be good to overcome the look , even golf clubs have to have curb appeal.

Just finished a session trying out the new Mizuno mp 54 & 4 along with the JPX EZ forged. The suprise was the EZ Irons. Did everthing I wanted when hit on the screws and had plenty of help when missed, but in a good way. Currently gaming the mp 59 @ 7.5 hcp.. Great distance consistency, none of the high hooks or slices when over cooked. Just tried them to try them and man am I glad I did. Haven’t had time to play like I use too and these fit the bill. Maybe there is still hope to get back to a 2-3 hcp. again. Oh and by the way, they have that buttery feel when pured and misses are easily diagnosed through feel, although muted in regards to Mizuno standards, which for me is an added bonus. Still remember thinning a few shots years ago with my mp 32’s w/x100’s – lightning bolt to the left wrist “never to be forgotten”. Mizuno has some real winners here!!!

I tested the EZ forged 6 iron yesterday, along with the MP 54 and MP 4. The EZ and MP 54 were with a DG R300 shaft and the MP 4 with a S300. My current irons have the S300 as well, so I felt more at home with that shaft.

The EZ had longer blade length, and the top line was really thick (which I don’t like). It had some offset, which didn’t really affect straight shots, but felt a bit awkward for shot shaping. On the other hand, the sole was quite thin, surprisingly thin to my eye, comparable width with the other two. I seemed to hit it best slightly on the toe side, whereas the MPs worked better with a slight heel strike. A solid hit felt powerful and lively with some springiness and a nice crack in the sound, giving the feeling the face gives me some extra yards (or meters in my case). To me, this blade felt more lively and giving more feedback than the JPX 825 pro. On the other hand, it is bigger and fatter from the top, whereas the sole had this sharp non-bevelled look which I like.

I also tried the EZ with a graphite shaft. The graphite was lighter and I had timing issues (the weight is a matter of getting used to, I guess). The graphite altered the feel significantly, I think it muted it, and I didn’t get the same liveliness, and I was missing the feeling of extra distance, although I seemed to actually it it further.

The MP 54 and 4 had pretty much the looks you’d expect, MP 4 having thinner topline and sole of the two. The 54 had a higher pitched sound and a bit of a crack. I was most interested in that model, but ended up liking it the least. The feel was somehow ambiguous to me. Bad shots didn’t feel nice nor really harsh, whereas the MP 4 really punished a bad shot with all the harshness of a true blade. I would say that the forgiveness difference of the MP 4 and 54 was more in the feel than in the actual ball flight. With a solid hit, the MP 4 felt really nice, and the sound was a soft and firm thump. That blade was somehow really workable, giving me a feel for what I had to do to hit a particular shot or a particular distance.

Someone above mentioned that “EZ” sounded like a TMaG or Cally name, haha. I’ve gotta agree, though I’m sure that the irons are top knotch, typical Mizzy.

Prefer the look of the JPX-825 irons, as I prefer the blue to the orange. Looks sort of Halloweenish, or maybe it is orange because Cobra has had success with Fowler’s orange creamsicle popularity.
I think that the dark finish on these new EZ irons will scuff easily, just like when Taylor Made used it on those Burner 2.0 irons.
I do like that Mizuno is using the forging on the game improvement irons, as I don’t think the JPX-825 irons were forged material (probably cast).

I have played with mizuno irons and woods for the last 10 years and have had 5 sets of irons and 3 different drivers in their line up and nothing else in the market compares to mizunos forged irons for feel and playability they are such a pure iron and the drivers I have had give me the distance I need
I am left handed so it is hard to get top level clubs that are so bloody good as the mizunos and I have tried them all from the other manufacturers and yes I know it’s all about the feel on the day but for money even thou they are more expensive than most mizuno will always get my business
Looking forward to the latest releases here in Australia in September

Adjustable driver? It would be very interesting to see the sales figures from the major brands. THEN, track those who have purchased the driver and see if they are still using it. Personally, it is just the usual golf industry hype to sell golf clubs.

Color? Who gives a flip. It doesn’t help you hit any better.

Why doesn’t the golf industry spend their dollars on quality (and sell that) instead of new stuff? Oops, forgot, quality doesn’t sell golf clubs just gadgets and color.

I would love to see a comparison between a bonded driver and an adjustable one. You could use Taylor Made RBZ driver for evaluation as they were available in both versions. I predict that the bonded one is 3 to 5 yards longer. If this holds true, then it will kill the adjustability factor. In the 80’s, tests showed that coloured balls were 2 to 3 yards shorter than white ones and everyone stopped buying them.

Highly intriguied by the entire line. If the irons are essentially JPX800’s that are forged, despite the silly name, they’ll have a winner on their hands.

If they actually allow people to order extra weights for the drivers, I could see the gear heads jumping on board as well. What I’m really curious about is if this is going to be adjustment ala Ping or ala Taylormade in terms of how much you can alter the loft/face angle.

Don’t get me wrong, Mizuno makes great clubs. I just can’t get excited about a Mizuno wood. I try and I try and I try and I just cannot get excited about it. Why do I try? The Mizuno MP-69s are my favorite clubs on the market, and I would love to fall in love with the rest of the Mizuno products for that reason alone. Still, their woods just seem to lag behind everybody else’s, like you said in the article. Look, there’s a reason why Luke Donald is playing the Taylormade R1 instead of a Mizuno driver, and he’s been with Mizuno for how long? 10 years?

I’ve never gotten hung up on what color a club is, so orange is OK by me. But, for some reason, I am picky about grip color. But those are easy to change out. For me it’s all about performance and how well I can hit a certain club. As of now, I’m playing the Mizuno JPX 3 and 5 woods. Believe me, I get some strange looks for bagging Mizuno woods. Truth be told, I felt my Pings may have been a smidge longer, but the Mizunos are so easy to hit off the fairway that it adds a ton of confidence to that part of my game. The only thing I don’t like about the JPX woods is the triangle shape. If the woods in this lineup have the same relief on the front that the JPXs do, but a more traditional shape from above, I’ll for sure take a look at getting some.

As to the adjustability, I don’t feel I need it. But, I understand it might be harder to sell them without it.
