First Look: PXG 0311XF Iron
“Trust me, forgiveness has never felt so good.”

It might be premature to say that PXG’s latest offering, the 0311XF iron, rounds out the company’s lineup, but it definitely expands its reach into a new performance segment.

As should be clear from the XF in the name, the 0311XF is PXG’s first foray into the Xtreme Forgiveness, game-improvement space. At least that’s how PXG is telling the story.

Me, I look at it a bit differently.

PXG0311XF-10

While the original 0311 looks like a player’s iron – I’d call it a slightly oversize blade – the performance characteristics are very much game-improvement. If the new XF plays as advertised, what we’re talking about is really super-game improvement playability engineered into the footprint of an iron only moderately larger than PXG’s first.

PXG’s engineers didn’t so much build on the existing platform as they did expand it. Literally. As in they stretched the 0311 in three dimensions with the goal of creating a larger, and by extension, more forgiving version of the original.

“We’d all love to hit the ball perfectly every time, but the truth is many of us don’t. Most players struggle with imperfect swings and for some playing, a blade can be intimidating. So, we engineered a game improvement iron that is even more forgiving than the original PXG 0311 irons and just as sexy. Trust me, forgiveness has never felt so good.” – Bob Parsons, PXG Founder

PXG0311XF-5

I’m not trying to undersell PXG’s latest efforts, but the XF is basically a 0311, only bigger. And that’s the point.

As you would expect from any iron explicitly positioned in the game-improvement space, the 0311XF features a wider sole, longer blade length, thicker topline, a bit more offset, and more mass in the back cavity as the clubhead transitions from center to sole.

While those changes aren’t insignificant, in isolation the XF is nearly indistinguishable from the 0311. It’s not a bulky iron, but side by side with the 0311 it is noticeably, though not significantly, larger. In my mind, these distinctions can be summarized with a single word: scale.

PXG0311XF-11

Expansion not Evolution

You’re not getting any revolutionary new technology story this year. PXG uses the same Thermo-Plastic Elastomer (TPE) filling to support the 0311XF’s ultra-thin face. You’re not getting any of that clichéd stuff about undercut cavities, and you’re most definitely not getting an aggressive color scheme and the elaborate badging that often comes with it.

PXG0311XF-9

You’re not getting anything that screams Look at me, I’m a game-improvement iron.

What you’re are getting is a larger version of the 0311, and with that comes more forgiveness (higher MOI), and higher (apples to apples) launch due to the resulting increase in dynamic loft.

PXG0311XF-4

While that may sound a bit too straight-forward, and perhaps overly simplistic, the true-to-PXG design creates a kind of continuity within the lineup that rarely exists elsewhere. Seriously. Where else does the most forgiving iron in the lineup look nearly identical to the tour model? Where else can you get a clean aesthetic (screws/weights notwithstanding), in a legitimate game-improvement iron?

PXG0311XF-8

My point is that while there are always geometric trade-offs between game-improvement irons, cavitybacks, and blades, it’s exceedingly rare that geometry is the only major distinction. While that may not seem like that big of a deal, for PXG the 0311XF allows it to expand into a new segment without deviating from its established identity. For the PXG player it means you now have three distinct, but not incohesive choices for the bag. Feel free to mix and match, and create one hell of a combo set.

PXG0311XF-7

“I love my PXG 0311XF 4-iron. Off the tee I hit it 260 yards and when someone looks in my bag it blends perfectly with my 0311 irons. You would never know that it’s a game improvement club – and I like that.” – Charl Schwartzel

Specs and Pricing

0811XF-spec

Stock lofts are, across the board, a degree strong than the 0811. PXG would likely tell you that’s, in part to offset the inherent center of gravity differences. I’d tell you it that it doesn’t matter. Trust your PXG fitter to get your lofts right.

PXG 0311XF irons are available for $350/head in Chrome finish and $500/head in PXG’s Xtreme Dark, a black Diamond-like Carbon (DLC) coating.

I am a disabled vet and I heard about the discount PXG had for vets so I called them. I had just got measured today for Callaway Rogue X, I am standard across the board except 1 degree upright. Kyle in customer service walked me through the whole process and I went over my fitting numbers and I got the 0311XF for $120 a club, 7 clubs for $840, that was less than the Callaway’s. I have hit a friend of mine’s before, but I wasn’t going to drop that much for irons. At $840, it was a no brainer.

I bought a set of 0311xf and it was the best decision I made .
Have played golf for nearly 50 years and only change clubs every 4 years or so . The enjoyment that these will bring ( and have already ) is a small cost compared to everything else in golf . Treat yourself – you will not regret it .

I played black PXG 0311 XF irons 3i – LW with Oban CT115 shafts (Shimada) for about 18-months. The total cost of this set was not something I care to admit — and I absolutely can’t stand them. They feel like I am hitting a stale potatoe. Initially I did like them – but over time can’t stand the overly soft and dead feel which provides NO feedback on mishits. i recently replaced them with Wilson C300 Forged irons with KBS Tour 90 shafts and I can honestly say at $85 per club, the forged C300 BEATS PXG in feel, perormance and looks. As for the PXG wedges and 0811X driver – absolute JUNK! Unlike a Ferrari vs a Chevy – spending more $$$ does not mean a golf club will PERFORM any better. As for PXG – they underperform and underwhelm in all catagories. Wish I had never bought a PXG product!

At 350 pounds sterling a club they are top end but the wow factor is definitely there they are a club longer than my jpx900 and feel softer. Do not regret changing or paying the cost for these one bit

Hi Paul Saw your post here. Curious, what JPX were you playing? I have JPX 900 forged and a JPX 900 hot metal 5 iron. I love my clubs, the look and feel is amazing. How you like the PXG’s now? Just curious. Have these on my radar Thanks for your time Scott

I took 3 swings with the 0311’s and absolutely loved them. Then after comparing the read outs from my Ping G25’s and all the other irons, the PXG’s data was the best. The one criticism I have and other guys at the shop who game them, say the same thing, is that you it’s hard to tell a mis-hit, if that’s a problem you tell me. The only way to miss-hit these clubs is off the hosel, or off the toe. The 0311’s are very forgiving!

It looks like Bob Parsons is trying to recover all the money he spent on golf equipment in one year. What was that amount $200,000 plus in a year. 48 years in golf and now this.
I think I will wait for the robots to come out, where you go to play rent one and it goes out on course with you then you put the club in its hand set the distance from your cart push button and see what happens. Oh yes, you still must get out of cart to putt. I will never know how all the older players made it in golf without all those gimmicks

I have never seen a Sexy Golf Club before, and I still haven’t. I don’t care if it is a “Rock on the end of a Stick” if I can hit it, it will go in my Bag. Get real $350 a club it better have a button that you push and radar that hits the ball in a 4 inch circle at 300 yards. I not saying that PXG’s are not good clubs, to me they are nothing but a “Status Symbol.” Or should I say for people that more money than sense!

You can criticize them all you want but until you own a set…..OMG. Have had them 3 months and handicap has dropped 4 shots. Hit 15 of 18 greens in regulation today, 17 of 18 on Friday. Handicap dropped from 6 to 2 in that short of time.. And long. Ping I’s were 140 for 8 Iron…..PXG is 150-160 for 8 iron. You want game changers spend a little extra and get fitted and enjoy the game every shot.

I am curious how much (if anyone knows) the PXG clubs cost minus the weights. As well, does anyone know how many grams the PXG weights are? http://golfweek.media.clients.ellingtoncms.com/img/photos/2015/07/21/pxg_weights.jpg

The primary cost is in the head. Shaft choice determines the totals. I have a set of PXG and love them and no I’m not wealthy. But after comparing to other brands it was a no brainer for me.

I have hit the 0311 and 0311T. I think they are all good, if not very good. The one thing to remember is they are not priced so that anyone can purchase them. These are supposed to be priced so that only a small percentage of the golfing world will buy. Keep that in mind.

A set of 8 (4-GW) in the dark finish would only set you back $4,000.00. For irons. A Set. One set. But it does include grips so you got that going for ya.

A picture of the “thicker topline” comparison at address would be nice. How much are we talking about?

I understand that these clubs are not meant for everyone, certainly not me at that price! But I have always loved the idea of marketing on the high end of products. There is a niche for “the best” in just about everything. It’s what distinguishes a business from everyone else. I just wish I could afford it.

If these are as good as advertised, they could sell them for 1500, but 2400 is pricing them out of 95% (maybe 99%) of the market.

I was intrigued by the first version, the newer more forgiving XF screams my name. But alas at $350 for a single iron, they are out of this guys budget.

I sure would love to hit one though, just to see and FEEL the difference. between them and my current very forgiving and good feeling iron.

I hit these in comparison with Mizuno MP15. I would say they felt good, but I wasn’t over the moon about them. I definitely hit a few on the money and walked away thinking, “Wow maybe there is something to these.” But when I looked at the numbers they were no better or worse than Mizuno (or any other top end iron by my estimation and IMHO). The problem is, when you swing a $300 iron, your brain thinks this must feel good! So you remember the sweet hits all the more. Distance comes from good physics at the moment of impact, and you control that.

I’ve hit both the 0311 and 0311T and they’re not bad. Kind of middle of the road feel wise, I’d put them in there with a PING S-series iron or a Titleist AP2. You can’t top the feel of a truly forged club, personally I’d take a Miura Giken (not the North American versions), an ENDO forged, or even a Kyoei forged iron over them in a heartbeat.

I have been in golf design since we started Lynx. You are right for sure. Physics is every things watch for a new 3 and 4 wood called down force first out in 70s now coming out in metal. It was tested at general dynamics aerospace center by the two men that put the first man on moon, oh yes they also got them home tested to the laws of physics coming out in two months
