‘These might be the most precise milled putters in golf’
‘On close examination you can’t find a single burr or tool mark on the entire putter. That’s really quite amazing, and a first in my experience.’
‘This putter designer already has a cult-like following in both Asia and Europe’
Introducing Gauge Design
No…the man’s last name is actually not Cameron or Bettinardi. It’s actually a name you may have never heard of….well not yet at least. But we think that might be changing pretty soon…and for many reasons. Not only is Dave Whitlam from Gauge Design one of only a hand full of people that I have ever seen be able to combine both beauty with functionality in the putter design industry…but he also does it with an immaculate level of precision. And of yeah…did we mention the man is also a part of an almost extinct breed…he actually makes all his putters from start to finish right here in the US.
And if it wasn’t for a very interesting lawsuit a few years back (we will cover this in the next few days) he might have already been a house hold name for golfers all across the US. The name Gauge Design already carries rock-star status in both Europe and Japan…and it is only a matter of time before it catches on here.
Could Gauge Design Be The Next Putter Rock-Star
There aren’t many Scotty Cameron’s in this business…but Whitlam might be the next one…his putters are surely deserving of it. Cameron was extremely fortunate…he actually hit the golf club designer lottery. Scotty basically got picked up out of a garage by Titleist…they saw a custom putter he made and they were impressed. It was a right place at the right time kind of deal. He is very fortunate that Titleist is now the distributor for his putters…they do a damn good job. But back when they picked him up there weren’t as many custom putter designers for them to pick from to fill their spot. Nowadays, there are many more to choose from…just look at the article from last week “15 Top Custom Putter Designers” and you will see how many more guys there are trying to follow his path. Do you think if Titleist had it all to do over…they would have chosen Scotty to be their guy? If you have seen Scotty’s first putter and compared it to some of the 15 guys work we wrote about you would have to say a resounding NO. Like we always say Scotty is talented but also very lucky.
‘What Cameron was able to do was make a great putter (Anser) pretty. Not better, just prettier.
What Separates Gauge Design
What separates Gauge Design from his competitors is his commitment to quality. Each of the Gauge Design putters are designed with one thing in mind – improving your game. The goal of founder David Whitlam is to make Gauge Design the next biggest thing on putting greens across the US. And after looking at some of these photos and putting with one you will most likely agree…there might not be a better putter then a Gauge Design.
Welcome Readers from CameronCollectors.com
First, I would like to welcome all the readers coming over from CameronCollector.com today…you and your opinions are more then welcome here. And just so you know…I and no one at MyGolfSpy are Scotty Cameron haters as you would say. But we are also NOT Cameron lovers like you guys…but that is ok. We have been in this business for a long time…and we tell it like we see it. We are not paid by Gauge Design or any other golf company…and never will be. It goes against what we started this blog for…and that was to inform golfers about the experiences we have had and testing we have done over the years. I also want to answer some of your questions below…I have registered on CameronCollector.com and as soon it the registration goes through I will try to answer more:
- We didn’t say these ARE the next Scotty Cameron’s…we said they could be…this is because from what we hear there might be a major company interested in doing to them what Titleist did to Scotty
- We don’t hate Titleist and love Callaway. Like we said we tell it like it is…and we think Titleist is overhyped and Callaway is not.
- For those that said you can’t fix stupid…lol I think I would be willing to challenge anyone other then a handful of that have been in the business their whole life to knowing more about the design industry then they guys here. We spend day and night doing nothing more then seeing and doing everything we possibly can do cover this industry and give you our un-biased opinion.
- For those that said Scotty wasn’t in the right place at the right time…then please explain what he was. There are many more talented putter designers then Scotty Cameron both now and then. Yes I know you guys are CameronCrazies so I know you won’t agree and you don’t have to. I love your guys passion for both the game and putters and respect that.
- For the guy that said he had never heard of any of the “15 Top Custom Putter Designers” in our article…this is because they are guys that are CUSTOM designers meaning they are like Scotty was before he got picked up. And that is the reason we wrote the article…so people could become aware of them…they offer some pretty nice stuff and some will even make a putter that you yourself draw up.
Like I said…I love you passion both for golf and putters. And like we have noted in every article we have referred to Scotty…he is very talented and I respect him very much. But since the day I started this golf blog…I told everyone that writes for us…”I want to hear your feelings, experience and opinions when you write something on MyGolfSpy…otherwise we are just like every other golf magazine out there that is in the pocket of every golf manufacturer…you can always respect someone’s honesty…you might not like it but you can at least respect it.”
Oh yeah…thanks for banning us out of the forum. You guys really are CrazyForCameron!
