GOLFBUSTERS: Drunk Driver

Does drinking actually make you a better golfer?

Today, in the name of golf (and science?) MyGolfSpy set out to test one of the oldest myths in the game.

Welcome to “GolfBusters” a place where golf, fun and folklore all meet on the first tee. How much does alcohol really affect people when they play golf? Do they get better or do they get worse?

Let’s find out.

LET’S GO GET DRUNK!

FINDINGS

It does look like the more alcohol you consume the worse your game gets.  However, there does seem to be a sweet spot after about 1-2 drinks (generally between 0.04-0.06 BAC).  After this we found that not only does your score get worse but distance too. We will have to do a bigger study to determine exactly how much alcohol hurts your game, but there does seem to be a correlation between how much alcohol you drink and your golfing ability.

YOU DECIDE:

Which is more important beer or golf?  Oh hell, just go have fun.

There is no doubt I’m better when I drink. I have a terrible sway when sober. It goes away between drinks 2 and 3 and I probably peak at 6 or 7 (light beer, so nothing too strong). If I ever quit drinking, I’ll need to quit golfing, haha.

We play in a foursome scramble that has had 100 beers in one day (not all but most on the course) shot -17 at a fairly difficult track. Myself, I’m good for a 6er on the course during league play and shoot consistently around par. I’ll volunteer for the next study.

I think a beer or two can remove tension from my swing. If I have a poor start then I will open a can of “aiming fluid”….after which I settle in nicely for the rest of the round. I think it is really just symbolic of letting go of the obsession to win and just “being the ball.” #thetaoofgolf

I split a 5th of bourbon with my Caddie during the state open qualifier and shot a -2 under 70 to qualify. Not sure how I honestly did it, but it worked.

This is the question? What is the break even point i.e… I find if I have one or two i play better, yet if I have three or four it goes down hill fast…

Always wondered this myself, can’t say I’ve ever been a soup sandwich on the course, but I do enjoy a few once I’ve snap hooked one to many drives! Next time I wanna be there, and I’ll bring the blue moons!

I never drank and golfed. As doing so ruined my play. But the best thing I did for my game was to stop drinking altogether. Since going completely dry my handicap is now in a free fall, down 6 strokes in 5 months and looking for it come down more this season.

Can’t drink and play well myself. If I’m having a bad round I may have a drink on the back nine. I really hate golfing with guys who feel the need to bring a 12 pack on the opening tee. By the 3rd hole they are nothing but an obnoxious distraction and ruin the round. On the other hand, a snort of whiskey along the way is more of a bonding agent with friends and doesn’t impede the golf or fun. As with most things, moderation is the key.

Well said. I just returned from a Myrtle Beach golf trip. One of our foursomes drank about a beer every other hole and by the end of the round he could barely get it in play off the tee. Another of our group was struggling for a while I gave him a pull one my Jameson bottle and he relaxed and scored 4 strait pars.

Done this on “$1 dollar beer” day. We played 54 holes and averaged a beer every 2 holes. It was a case of beer per person.

Need to clear the air a little. Bob Renengar got screwed over big time by his church going little friend Jack Gilbert. Him and his investor friend set out to get rid of Bob and did so by filing on company so they could screw him even more. After dealing with Jack and making offers and going back to my typed phone calls I find that Jack lied to me and others I think they will sell off the inventory file on their new company then you will have no place to go for returns . We made many offers including $5,000,000 for 100% of company and then he tried to get us involved in a bidding war on the court house steps, I have tapes of the next TV soap

A silly video, but a relevant and interesting question. Since I rarely warm up, I like to have a beer before the first to get loose and another somewhere on the front if need or not. I agree that beyond two drinks, things generally will skid downhill.

Never had the yips, but I just got my driver mojo back and I’ve developed this almost first date anxiety about driving the ball. It’s taken a couple drinks right off the bat to soften the edge. But I start stoking it somewhere along the way and suddenly I’m super confident and ripping it. What happened to the crazy mental BS? What a game!

I cannot not play and not drink. Around my golfing buddies im usually known for having the beers, 8AM tee time or 4pm tee time, whenever. I pop one on the first tee, no problem. I carry a +1.4 index. Last Saturday I played and didnt drink cause i had to work after round shot an uncharacteristic 86 and my riding partner say ” I dont think you can play golf sober”… depends on the player i guess

I learned a lot working on the PGA Tour about the pros and amateurs . Like when a tour pro miss hits a 5 iron, when round is over he will go to range and hit 5 irons. Amateurs go to the bar for a few beers. It’s like amateurs go to range and hit the shots their good at. Pros watch amateurs warming up and the ones hitting their drivers all the time they don’t want because like one said to me that player will be tired about the 12th hole. Just watch and listen to them you learn a lot . More than from any where else. I have been playing this great game and I may have had two drinks in 58 years on course.

A few years ago on a golf trip to Turkey ( all enclusive ). We drank from 7pm till 7am and then played golf drunk as a skunk. Felt terrible the whole round, double vision, feeling sick and so so tired. 17 straight pars later stood on 18th tee and felt pretty good, second wind and sobering up nicely. Double bogey finish and straight to the bar. I put the decent golf down to not hitting the ball very hard as the noise of ball on metal was giveing me a sore head. Didn’t miss any greens in regulation due to taking at liest 2 clubs more on every shot. Don’t ever drink on the course and only moderately the night before. Being Scottish, we like a small libation of an evening. Hic hic

Golf and drinking on an empty stomach is a bad thing. If I start a round off good, I don’t drink until after the round; if I start off bad, then what the hell.

I might be an anomaly to this study. Game does not change with 6 freshly squeezed beers in my belly. We can play a little Nassau at the MSG Texas Open coming up!

Among my foursome buddies it’s known as my Italian Sports Drink. I carry it in an opaque container. It is otherwise known as Pinot Grigio. It does lubricate my swing. It makes my good shots better and the bad ones less painful. Only thing weird about it is when I’m sipping it in an early morning round.

My scientific study: 2 beers* a side keeps the swing loose and keeps the mind free of clutter. 3 or more beers a side and you start to ponder about the meaning of life while tapping in for triple bogey.

      * On a well-hydrated, well-fed body.

Will y’all do a study on music during a round of golf? And the best genre of music to listen to during a round? I always found classic rock has a strong and steady beat that keeps the swing in rhythm…and BONUS…your putter turns into a nice guitar when ZZ Top is ripping it up.

That’s another good study. I never heard music during the round until a few years ago. To each his own, I guess. I golf for the solitude and camaraderie. Wouldn’t bring a bluetooth speaker on course myself but it’s not as distracting as I first thought. After the first couple holes I just tune it out. Nothing wrong with it unless it’s played so loud it distracts others.

I love to play with quiet music. It is very relaxing between shots and easy to ignore during shots.

I’m not much of a drinker but occasionally enjoy a cold one after a round. However, I just love when other guys I play with are knocking back the brew. I watch their game head downhill on the back 9 and I scoop-up the easy money. Cheers!

Love the scientific expertise here…LOL I completely agree with the sweet spot. When I’m not playing well and get tense I can grab a double crown and ginger or a couple of beers at the turn and I usually play better on the back. It loosens me up. If I start drinking on the front nine, my back nine usually suffers.
