MyGolfSpy’s 10 Most Wanted Golf Courses: Arizona and Nevada

The search for the best golf courses in the USA moves to Arizona and Nevada.

While the desert offers some of the most unique scenery the game has to offer, it also presents a bit more danger as well. From the wildlife, which includes coyotes, scorpions, and rattlesnakes, to cacti; most notably the notorious jumping cholla, desert golf isn’t without its risks. Toss in temperatures that can rise above 110° in the summer, and you have an abundance of reasons why desert golf is uniquely challenging.

For adventurous golfers, however, the good far outweighs the bad.

To build our list of the Most Wanted Golf Courses in Arizona and Nevada we used our #Datacratic process and stats from our partners at the TheGrint, a golf handicap and stat tracking service, whose extensive database contains more than 120,000 golf course reviews submitted by average golfers like you.

Here are the 10 Most Wanted Golf Courses in Arizona and Nevada.

#1 Wolf Creek

most-wanted-az-nv-1

“Wolf Creek Golf Club strives to deliver the ULTIMATE GOLF EXPERIENCE to each and every guest. As you are called to the first tee and look down towards the green, you notice a one of a kind canvas. The detail of the striped emerald green fairway below, lined with brilliant white sand bunkers, you instantly know that Wolf Creek is a special place. This is only a small sample of what is yet to come.”

#2 Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort (Wolf Course)

most-wanted-az-nv-2

“Just 25 minutes northwest of the famed Las Vegas Strip, this international golf destination is serving up the ultimate trio of magnificent, championship golf courses. Sculpted by World Golf Hall of Fame architect Pete Dye, these courses are his only pure designs in Nevada.”

#3 Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort (Sun Mountain)

most-wanted-az-nv-3

“Just 25 minutes northwest of the famed Las Vegas Strip, this international golf destination is serving up the ultimate trio of magnificent, championship golf courses. Sculpted by World Golf Hall of Fame architect Pete Dye, these courses are his only pure designs in Nevada.”

#4 Gold Canyon Golf Resort (Dinosaur Mountain)

most-wanted-az-nv-4

“The scenery, dramatic elevation changes, abundant wildlife and exhilarating views all make for a memorable golfing experience. “Unforgettable” certainly describes the Dinosaur Mountain course where the championship layout is laced with a rollercoaster ride that would rival Six Flags! Most golf courses have one signature hole, Dinosaur Mountain has at least ten holes that could fit the bill.”

#5 The Boulders Resort Golf Club (South)

most-wanted-az-nv-5

“The South course provides its players with much of the same experience they would find on the North course. The scenic views and desert beauty continue – with even more locations for the perfect KODAK moment. While the North course is the original offering from the resort, many people believe that the South course is the most scenic. In fact it has holes that go right up into the boulder formations. During your round you will encounter the signature “Boulder Pile” and also “Rosie’s Rock”, two of the resort’s most recognizable rock formations.”

#6 Quintero Golf Club

most-wanted-az-nv-6

“Playing over 7200 yards from the Championship tees, and a comfortable 5043 yards from the forward tees, the Quintero experience offers strategic bunker placement, generous landing areas (for the straight hitters) and multi-level bentgrass greens often referred to as some of the smoothest and truest in the Southwest.”

#6 We-Ko-Pa Golf Club (Cholla)

most-wanted-az-nv-6-1

“The Cholla Course at We-Ko-Pa is dramatic to say the least as it plays across desert washes and atop ridges flowing seamlessly into greens tucked into hillsides and desert arroyos. Cholla is one of the most pristine desert golf experiences in the Southwest. Threading through an open expanse overlooking the Verde and Salt River Valleys, Red Mountain, and the Superstition Mountains, Cholla preserves the essence and purity of desert-style golf. In fact, you will often hear as much talk of the setting and sensational views as you will about the incredible golf course at hand.”

#8 Troon North Golf Club (Pinnacle)

most-wanted-az-nv-8

“Revered as Scottsdale’s crown jewel, the challenge, visual sensation, and special ambiance of Troon North sets the standard by which all other courses are measured. The immaculately groomed fairways, bentgrass greens and exceptional customer service create the renowned Troon Golf Experience.  Troon North’s Monument and Pinnacle courses consistently rank at the top of every golfer’s must-play list”

#8 Raven Golf Club at Verrado

most-wanted-az-nv-8-1

“Tucked in the foothills of the White Tank Mountains in Buckeye, Arizona, stretching to more than 7,000 yards, and offering jaw dropping views and rugged natural beauty, Verrado Golf Club is an exceptional West Phoenix Valley golf experience that can accommodate golfers of all levels. After your round, the Verrado Grille restaurant is a great place to relax and take in the Sunset!”

#10 Troon North Golf Club (Monument)

most-wanted-az-nv-10
“Revered as Scottsdale’s crown jewel, the challenge, visual sensation, and special ambiance of Troon North sets the standard by which all other courses are measured. The immaculately groomed fairways, bentgrass greens and exceptional customer service create the renowned Troon Golf Experience. Troon North’s Monument and Pinnacle courses consistently rank at the top of every golfer’s must-play list”

I live in Las vegas and am lucky enough to call Paiute my home course. The staff is great, the courses are almost always in outstanding shape, and the practice facilities are some of the best and most expansive I’ve had access to anywhere. The prices and memberships for locals are very attractive as well. I highly reccomend anyone traveling to Vegas for golf to make it a point to visit Paiute. Wolf creek is an amazing experience as well, it’s definately a must play, I’ve never played anything quite like it and it’s only about an hour or so from Vegas.

One course that did not make this list that I think should have was Coyote Springs, a Jack Nicklaus designed course halfway between the Strip and Mesquite. Land in Vegas and play it on your way up to Mesquite to play Wolf Creek!!!

I played Wolf Creek twice in one day 3 years ago. The morning round was windy as hell and we had a GREAT time on a great golf course. The sun came out and the wind stopped blowing for the 2nd round and it was an ever GREATER course under nice conditions. I can’t wait to go back. FYI…if you have time, play Conestoga as well when you’re in Mesquite!

I have played several in AZ. All nice courses, but if you consider price and value of play, I think the Most Wanted list would change. It’s a nice list of high end courses, but not practical for most of us except in 110* heat.

Have played all of these more than once except Paiute/Wolf (its on my play list). Absolutely agree that Wolf Creek is #1. Have played in twelve states so far and agreeing with previous post, it is the best desert golf experience thus far. Many memorable holes. Is it gimmicky? maybe a little but you have to think on this course. Tee shot is all about placement. Very often it is not a grip & rip shot (3,5 wood or hybrid anyone?). There are no adjoining fairways to save the poorly executed tee ball. Staff is superior.

      Verrado is a hidden gem.

All of these deserve to be on the list. Think you may have missed one however. This course is not as famous as those on this list. That course is Laughlin Ranch in Bullhead City. Love the layout and very scenic as well with reasonable rates in summer.

Wolfcreek is kind of odd. It’s nice, but its got a really weird layout. It has no flow. Its just kind of off. Its fine but I didnt love it by any stretch of the imagination.

I love Troon North and the Cholla. Word of advice for anyone contemplating Wolf Creek: don’t play it when it’s blowing 25. You’ll have enough trouble with not knowing where to hit it or what club.

Boy I did not have that kind of experience at Wolf Creek. They had just punched the greens and there were several tee boxes closed as well. No mention of it and no discount on rate, but they did us a hat in the proshop instead. I found the layout to be completely gimmicky, to the point where there were actually no memorable holes at all. It would not be on my list to re-visit. On the other hand, Quintero is phenomenal (particularly for the money( and I would have it much higher up the list.

I’ve lived in AZ for 10 years and have probably played 90% of the courses here. I think Quintero is the best course in AZ. The odd thing is that not many have played it. The price is pretty reasonable in the summer.

I live in Arizona since ’98 and have played all the Arizona courses on the list and have played Wolf Creek, they are all fantastic and unique, especially for those who have never played desert golf. If you can stand the heat and sun, most can be played for around $50 or less in the summer. Raven at Verrado and We-Ko-pa is the best year round bargain.

This is completely ridiculous. Not a single course in Tucson. Shame on you. So many phenomenal courses in Tucson.
