MyGolfSpy’s 10 Most Wanted Golf Courses – Texas

Texas, known for Lone Star Beer, an abundance of armadillos, and perhaps now, its apparent affinity for tribute-style golf courses (there are two on our list).

While the state’s golf reputation may not equal that of California, Florida, or the Carolinas, Texas is home to Nike’s Oven, Ben Hogan, UST, and, once upon a time, Adams Golf.

Its roots in the game are strong.

As you’ll see on this list, the state is also home to some spectacular golf courses.

To build our list of the Most Wanted Golf Courses in Texas we used our #Datacratic process and stats from our partners at the TheGrint, a golf handicap and stat tracking service, whose extensive database contains more than 120,000 golf course reviews submitted by average golfers like you.

#1 Cowboys Golf Club

most-wanted-texas-1st

“Cowboys Golf Club is the premier resort-style, daily-fee golf course in Texas. Inspired by excellence, an innovative golf and entertainment experience awaits you. As the world’s first NFL-themed golf course, this is the ultimate destination for business entertainment, corporate tournaments, executive meetings and special events.”

#2 La Cantera Golf Club (Palmer Course)

most-wanted-texas-2nd

“The Palmer Course at La Cantera, at just under 7,000 yards in length, might be one of the best kept secrets in the United States. Designed by Arnold Parmer, this golf course was carved right out of the beautiful hill country on the northwest side of San Antonio. The golf course is fun for new players and a real challenge for even the best players. The clubhouse is a perfect place to unwind and relax after your round of golf, while the views looking down on the 9th and 18th green are spectacular.”

#3 The Quarry Golf Club

most-wanted-texas-3rd

“The front and back nines play very, very differently. The front nine is links styled like you might see in Scotland or Ireland. It features rolling hills, large, expansive bunkers and sloping greens. The back nine is where we get our name, The Quarry. 100 years ago it was an active, busy, limestone rock quarry pit providing stone for a growing San Antonio area. Today it is beautifully maintained 9 holes of golf for all of you to enjoy.”

#4 Texas Star Golf Course

most-wanted-texas-4th

“Texas Star is well-known for world class golf that is secluded in the midst of the bustling Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. This serene public golf course has a private feel with 275 acres of plush fairways, magnificent views, stacked rock ponds, waterfalls and natural woodlands. Please visit Texas Star for a truly unique golf experience, Texas style!”

#5 The Tribute Golf Club

most-wanted-texas-5th

“The Tribute’s brilliantly crafted par-72, 7,000-yard championship layout was designed by Tripp Davis & Associates to emulate holes from some of the greatest golf courses in Scotland, the birthplace of golf. Complete with wind-swept dunes, sea-washed grasses and other authentic Scottish links-style design elements, the course’s captivating variety of holes include the famous par-4 17th Road Hole; the breathtaking starting 1st and finishing 18th holes from St. Andrews.”

#6 Brackenridge Park Golf Course

most-wanted-texas-6th

“Brackenridge Park Golf Course is the heart of the Alamo City Golf Trail. Located just north of downtown San Antonio, this course is accessible for locals and visitors alike. The 2008 restoration of “Old Brack” re-routed the course to Tillinghast’s original layout and renewed its conditions to compete with San Antonio’s premier golf courses. Anyone playing golf in the San Antonio should tee it up at Brackenridge to enjoy its wonderful history and fun city-park layout.”

#7 Tierra Verde Golf Club

most-wanted-texas-7th

“Tierra Verde is the first golf course in Texas and the first municipal course in the world to be certified as an Audubon Signature Sanctuary. Walk onto the first tee and enter an environment where golf and nature come together in harmony. Opened in 1998, and carved from 250 acres of secluded terrain, the course’s unsurpassed layout encompasses a variety of natural settings and offers an outstanding playing experience on every hole”

#8 The Golf Club At Fossil Creek

most-wanted-texas-8th

“Just the way golf was meant to be, The Golf Club Fossil Creek will challenge golfers of every ability. Gorgeous rolling fairways and 18 testing holes all intertwined throughout streams created by Fossil Creek. This exclusive par 72 public course, designed by America’s foremost golf legend, Arnold Palmer, winds its way through 1150 acres of natural Texas terrain.”

#9 Tour 18 Golf Course Houston

most-wanted-texas-9th

“Imagine yourself playing on carefully simulated holes from some of the greatest golf courses in America. This collaboration of incredible replicas offers players a memorable experience of walking in the footsteps of some of the great legends before them.”

#10 The Bandit Golf Club (Bandit)

most-wanted-texas-10th

“While The Bandit is officially part of a housing subdivision, homes along the course are scarce. You’re more likely to see deer meandering beside Long Creek or a hawk swooping along the fairway than an oversized Texas mansion. A quiet secluded atmosphere permeates the course, providing a true escape from the city. The hilly terrain provides welcome relief for Texans used to playing the flatlands, which may explain why golfers come from as far away as Houston and Dallas to play The Bandit.”

Here is a novel idea…… why don’t you poll the people in Texas who actually play all of these courses. Get their top 10, and then compile a “Top 10” from that list. I live in the DFW area, and have played almost all of the courses on this list, and also disagree that it is not even close to accurate!
Fossil Creek?? good course but not a top 10.
Texas Star?? definitely a Top 10, but maybe coming in at 10th.
La Cantera?? Resort! Over priced! Fun, but not a Top 10!
The Quarry?? C’mon, you’re reaching now! Fun to play, but not even a Top 20!
Many other GREAT courses in Texas, (public, resort, private and TPC). Very poor attempt to just put up a list on the internet!

I’m a die hard Cowboys fan and want to play the course one day, but I’ve even heard it’s not anything really special and definitely not worth what they are charging.

Anyone here from Austin that could recommend a course for me when I’m visiting my family over Christmas. I don’t want to spend more than around $75 to $100 at the most since I will also need to rent clubs.

As a resident of Texas i am fairly surprised that Lajitas did not make your top 10. Great resort and staff there and the Blackjack course is Awesome along with its maintenance. Located in the Big Bend area of Texas offers some fantastic views!!

I think this list shows the real flaw with using the Grint’s review service as a ratings for courses. At least in Texas, the reviews are clearly coming from people who frequent mid to upper mid range public courses. The issue here is that it is clearly excluding elite TPC, private, and high dollar courses. I’m sure this is because people who are members of clubs don’t feel the need to rank their own club on a tool like the Grint. Plus the fact that less people get to play those elite clubs. And even if they did, the # of reviews from public courses would heavily out weigh the private/elite courses. If only 3 people say that one of the TPCs (or any of the PGA Tour used courses) was a 5 star, but 80 people say the Cowboys Course is a 5 star, it’s going to rank higher on this list. I think that fact that none of the courses used by the PGA Tour or Web.com tour made this list (as far as I can tell, I didn’t fact check that statement).

I have to agree with the other comments, after reading this list it will negate any past or future course reviews from MSG/The Grint. Still a fun read though, and all the equipment reviews are still industry leading in my book!

This list is so bad it makes me question all the other lists here.

What does tranning in golf mean, hitting from the women’s tees? :-)

As a DFW resident I can support Cowboys and Texas Star, both great tracks buts Fossil Creek is home of the 5 hour round with suspect conditions and Tierra Verde while a nice course has suffered from burnt out greens and shaggy tee’s and fairways when the budget gets tight. This list just discredited the other lists.

Why did I know that the Texas BBQ Curtain would be chiming in on this list?

I believe this list is pulled directly from the Grint ratings and there’s no editorial bias. So, with that in mind…. I guess?

I mean, I wouldn’t even put the Quarry and Brack in the top 3 in San Antonio (TPC, Hyatt Hill Country, and maybe even the newly renovated Golf Club of Texas ahead of them).

uhhhhhhhhhh. MSG/Grint will probably get a lot of flack for this list…. There is no way The Palmer, The Bandit and Quarry (Three San Antonio Courses) is better than THE TPC OF SAN ANTONIO. This list is WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY off. #Datacratic FAIL.

As a Houston resident, I could not disagree more. Only one site listed from Houston and you pick Tour 18? I know DFW has some nice courses, but let’s balance it out a little…

Respectfully (as I do enjoy your site), I can only assume you have never visited the course or played it. Tour 18 Houston is a great concept, but the course conditions are marginal for the prices they charge — and its difficult to play 18 in under 5-6 hours because of slow play. I played the course this spring and vowed to never go again.

Played La Cantera on a visit to Tx in 2012, but the resort course which is IMHO best suited to mid-high handicappers, superb experience, great staff and with my military discount good value.

      Highly recommended.

The Resort course is test for all skill levels, not just Mid-high cappers. The PGA played the Texas Valero Open there for yours before going to the TPC of SA

As a resident of north Texas, I would disagree with all of the DFW selections. Maybe if you are only counting public courses, maybe…
