(Written by Golfspy Dave) “Which one of these putters is the right one for me?” Do you ask yourself that question?

I ask that question every time I check out a newly released line of putters.  We are rapidly approaching the 2013 PGA Show and that means that we will get to see a whole bunch of new putters over the coming weeks.  These new flatsticks will come from the big name manufacturers and from the little shops as well.  Regardless of the company, I see myself wondering which of the new putters is right for me every time I see a new photo.  Some of you may be able to stick to your old faithful putter year after year, but I know that some of you are like me, constantly on the lookout for the latest beauty in the putter corral.

Today, I submit for your perusal the new Core Method Weighted line-up from Nike.  The Method Core Weighted putter line is the latest interpretation of Nike’s Method Core series.  This new line builds upon the success of the previous Method Core line by bringing something new:  weights.  What do the weights do?  Let’s ask Nike.

David Franklin, Nike Golf Master Modelmaker, stated, “Most people don’t realize that they are about 3/10 of an inch above the ground at impact. You need to keep the center of gravity of the putter as low as you can so that it never gets higher than the CG of the ball. This stops the putter from driving the ball down and creating backspin on the ball.”

The Method Core Weighted putter works to solve this potential putting inconsistency with its strategically designed weighting system. Franklin continued, “With the Method Core Weighted technology, we worked to get the center of gravity lower than the ball, enabling the putter to rise up at impact, lift the ball and turn it over quickly.”

So there you have it, the weights help get that ball rolling forward.  Combining this new technology with the Polymetal™ grooves and multi-material insert sounds like a great combination.  So let’s check take a look!

General Specs:  Nike Method Core Weighted

:: Tour Weighting for optimal forgiveness, roll and accuracy

:: Multi Material Insert w/ Polymetal Groove technology

:: Heel-Toe sole weights

:: CG’s that are lower and deeper

:: Mid-sized Method Core grips

:: Tour Satin Chrome finish

:: Milled Faces

:: Putters Weighted to Lengths (33”, 34”, 35”, & 43” in belly version of 11w)

Nike Method Core – MC01w

The Nike Method Core MC01w has a classic blade shape with a short flow neck.  This neck creates quite a bit of toe hang (5:00) and will most likely fit those of you with a strong arcing stroke.

// BEST FIT – Strong Arc

Nike Method Core – MC02w

The MC02w is another classically shaped plumbers-necked blade, whose toe hang (4:00) should fit more of a slight arcing stroke.  This is not just the MC01w with a different neck though.  The MC02w is shorter heel to toe, and wider face to flange that the MC01w.  Personally, I found this compact geometry very visually appealing.

// BEST FIT – Slight Arc

Nike Method Core – MC03w

The MC03w’s half-mallet head has the shortest heel to toe length in the line-up.  Rather than the more typically found flow neck, Nike has equipped the MC03w with a plumbers neck.  This brings the toe hang (4:00) and playability (slight arc) more to the realm of the MC02w than to the other mallets in the line-up.  If you like the mallet head, but want a bit more toe hang, this may be your putter.

// BEST FIT – Slight Arc

Nike Method Core – MC04w

The MC04w is a double-wide version of the classic blade.  The extra deep flange and the double bend shaft give the putter just a touch of toe hang (3:15), likely dropping it into the bag of the straight putting player.  The MC04w has the same length heel to toe as the MC02w, but is definitely wider than even that wider-than-normal blade.

// BEST FIT – Straight Back Straight Through

Nike Method Core – MC11w

The MC11w is the true mallet in the Method Core Weighted line-up.  Like the MC04w, the MC11w also has just a bit of toe hang (3:15) and should fit a straight stroke.  The MC11w is also available as a 43” belly putter.

// BEST FIT – Straight Back Straight Through

General Impression: Feel

Most people who rolled the Nike Method Core Weighted putters were surprised at how nicely they feel.  I was in this camp as well prior to rolling them.  I love the original Method and the Method Midnight lines, but have prior to now avoided the Core line likely do to my anti-insert snobbery.  I think that this line may have dispelled my anti-insert mentality.

The feel of this putter is total Goldilocks.  Is it too mushy? Nope.  Nor does it have a hard, plastically click at impact.  Impact sounds good, and the ball definitely rolls well like the designer of their weights and the grooves says it should.  These putters may be at the lower end of the price scale, but they feel nice and rich at impact.

General Impression:  Looks

Overall, I think that the Nike Method Core Weighted is an attractive putting package.  I always get a bit concerned with glare potential of a silver finish, but the Core Weighted’s Tour Satin Chrome Finish was glare free.  The stock grip looks great and has a great tacky texture.  My only concern with the looks comes in the realm of durability.  The bottom edge of the face seems unusually prone to dings, especially on the MC011w.  You can see a few in the photos above.  Nothing is visible at address, and play seems unaffected.  Perhaps this is a headcover coverage issue.  Regardless of cause, I found their emergence surprising, and thus worth mention.

The One For Me

Many of you who have read my reviews probably know which version of the Nike Method Core Weighted that I picked as my favorite.  Did you guess the MC04w?  If so, you are correct.  I really loved the look and feel of that putter.  It was a solid performer for me as well.  The very first putt I took with it was a 25 footer that dropped for birdie.  I didn’t drop every putt with it, of course, but after a few (one?) holes I did feel very confident with it.  One of my friends, we will call him Agent R, had this to say about the MC04w.

“All of these putters feel really good, but that one is special.” – Agent R

I was actually surprised by my second favorite putter in the line.  Looking at them, I figured second place would go to the MC11w or the MC03w.  As it turns out, these two were third and fourth.  Number two for me was the MC02w.  Maybe I have an eye for square heads, maybe it’s the MOI, or maybe it’s something else.  Whatever the reason, the MC02w and I seemed to get along quite well.

In Conclusion

I was definitely impressed by Nike’s new Method Core Weighted line.  Maybe pleasantly surprised is a better way to describe my overall impression.  The addition of the sole weights to the existing Polymetal Groove/Polymer-Aluminum insert allows the Method Core Weighted line to produce a great feeling, true rolling putt. I appreciate that the Nike designers have included quite a diverse range of head shapes in the line-up as well.  If one of the models catches your eye, and/or sounds like it will fit your stroke, I strongly suggest you take it out for a test roll.  Take it from this now former insert snob, you are in for a treat.

      I would love to try the Drone 2.0 belly putter, I’d actually convert it to a counter balance putter by cutting it down to 36 inches and installing a superstroke 3.0 XL grip with a 50g weight. Thank you and I hope to try this out and let people know what I think.

      I have used mc05w and mc3I. Both are great putter. But, mc05w is better because you don’t have to struggle with back swing. It come very straight, it doesn’t go out of line or rythm. Most of us amateur golfers or some pros, pull or push away in take away from line of swing. This putter has help me in taking straight line I want. The feel is by far the best. Secondly, consistent distance. I never putted so confidently before. I never worry about distance I will pass from the hole or leaving short..

      I prefer the MC-01. I’ve used Nike putters for a long time and here’s why I’ll never change. I was in a tournament last season where I was draining 10 footers all day and when it came down to me tapping in a 3 footer for a playoff, I choked. After that I childishly threw the putter in disgust and as my stomach dropped while I watched it tag a tree trunk at the face of the club thinking there went $200 and my favorite Nike putter of all time; it was fine! Built like a brick house! Beautiful! Well balanced! I’ll never throw my baby again!

      I’ve played Ping and Snake Eyes putters but recently rented a set when I went to play while on a trip. The set was Nike covert vr-s and came with the Nike Method MC04W putter. I’m not really a blade putter kinda player but I have to say that this putter very much impressed me. Smooth grip and fluid movement when moving from front to back hand. Contact was solid and it gave me a boost in confidence when on the green. Weights made a different when having to put a little more force on the ball with long uphill putts. Very nice, very attractive, very impressive.

      Went down to my local golfstore to compare the Ping Karsten TR Anser 2 with the Rife Aruba. While I was there I also tried many other putters including the Nike Method Core MC02W. When I finally got back to my comparison I ended up buying the Rife since it felt good and was at a very competitive price. The really interesting part is that when I was home that night all I could think about was the way the Method Core had felt, sounded and rolled. I used the Rife the next day and it’s a good putter, but it’s not the MC02W. First time I’ve ever pined for a putter!

      The Nike Method Core MC11w is the one for me. I prefer mallet type putters and it fits my style of putting: straight back and straight through. Additionally, it is shafted in a manner that I find more appealing. The added weights being low and further back should lower the center of gravity and assist getting the ball rolling forward with ease and aid forgiveness, accuracy, and consistency.

When I recently went to the pga superstore in Chicago on a visit I was truly amazed by the feel the weight and the look of this putter. I have been looking for the right putter for over a year now and feel if I find the right putter I could shave atleast 4 strokes off my game. I tried this out in the Pro-Shop of my leagues Golf Course in Hudson OH, Ellsworth…
      Since I just got a new used set of clubs, looks like I will save up my dimes towards end of season to get my putter of my dreams…All the best…Nice job a again Nike

      The MCO1 is now called “Harry” (Putter) because of the magic that he has brought to my game. The lower CG is perfect for rolling the ball and distance control is a very short accommodation from the standar ‘part of the set” that was my putter for the past four years while I have been searching for Harry.

      I “test drove” the MC03w a few days ago because I had left my Scotty Red X at home by accident. It looks a lot like my Scotty but with more weight and a softer feel. I felt like I had great control and the weight helped to slow my tempo a bit. I definitely like the softer feel of the club head and I felt that it was a little more forgiving. I putted great with it and am now considering saying good by to Scotty!

And even if it didn’t putt like a dream( which it does I’ve tried it) I would still try as hard as I could to love it because of how sweet the thing looks. Nike rolled out some winners, hopefully I could get to use one to roll out some one putts.

      I’d have to go with the MC04W…which bears a very strong resemblance at first light to the Scotty
      Squareback…which I have…and have always liked. However, I still wish they came with an option of a lite, but bigger grip…which I have incorporated onto several of my 15 putters…Actually, I see in all of them a determination from Nike to further penetrate the putter market…and likely will!

      The MC04w is the one for me. The peripheral view of the double-wide version as the club moves through my putting arc will give immediate feedback in practice and on the greens. The double bend shaft tends to disappear when focusing on the ball during the putting stroke. No chunks of metal and no square corners on the shaft allow my peripheral vision to focus on the putter face and the black alignment line. The weight and feel as the club swings through the putting arc provides a smooth stroke I feel will get the ball rolling cleanly on the line I set myself up for. When done correctly, I expect to be one putting quite a bit more.

      MC01 is the one for me. Very classic looking head shape. Although slightly longer blade length than normal in this style. I like the half shaft offset better than the full shaft offset in the MC02. $349- $169 – $0? I was out putter shopping today, almost sure I was gonna spend $349 on a Cameron Newport 2 but after comparing both, I liked the $169 MC01 so much better. I think the insert is so forgiving compared to the Cameron. Every putt felt solid compared to some with the Cameron. I realize thats the indian not the arrow miss hitting those putts, but lets face it, my names not on my bag and thats who Nike is selling putters to. I have hit all the Method putters out there and this line is my favorite. I will eventually get the Method Core MC 01, lets just see how.. $0

I like a putter with a little more weight…like up around 360/275 range.. Do not underestimate the method core putters this year. I was skeptical of Nike putters until I started trying out the MC04W and MC11W. I was sold! Both puters tested great. I have a slight arc putting motion so I thought the MC04W was the better choice, but using face tape, it proved that the MC11W was actually the better choice for me. So definitely get fitted for the putter because you may actually get different results. Overall, the line has geat feel to it and a nice roll. Just wish the headcover was magnetic like most brands and not velcro. Otherwise, nothing else to complain about.

      MC03w all the way. Love the plumbers neck and the small mallet shape. Little bit of toe hang … perfect! LOVE the way these putters feel and how nice the ball comes off the face.

      Putting has always been the worse part of my game. For many years, up until this year, I’ve putted with a face balanced putter. I tried an old toe hang putter that i never really used, and my putting definitely improved this summer…..even though I don’t care too much for its appearance. I’m thinking that with a toe hang putter that I like the looks of, I may even be able to master greens, so, I would have to choose the MC01w.

      The 04 would be my 1st choice with the 01 a close second. Just can’t do the plumbers neck,always seem to pull the putts with that neck.

      i would love to have the MC04W. it’s sort of like the gap wedge fills a void in degrees of loft.. the MC04W fills the void between blade and mallet.
      i like the blade apperance with the extended base line looks of a mallet.
      it’s a gap putter

      I’d go with a MC03w, I’ve always played an anser, wanted to see if I would benefit from a high m.o.i. putter and switched to a manta. I make a lot more putts, but one of these days i’m going to get a two stroke penalty for throwing up on my ball because looking at it and it’s size makes me sick. Maybe something like the MC03w that’s in the middle would be the right fit…

      I think the MC04w would best fit my stroke and visual preferences. It would be nice to get some added stability without going full-on mallet, which is a compromise this model appears to achieve.

      Although I’m not currently bagging any Nike equipment, you can’t help but laud the strides they’ve made in the market, particularly with their putters division, considering how inherently fickle and subjective they are by nature. Pretty impressive.

      I entered the store determined to buy a Scotty Cameron and left with a secondhand Nike Method 003. The putter isn’t even symmetrical and it still looks beautiful but that doesn’t even matter, it simply works. I hated putting before I had this putter but now I look at a 15 foot putt thinking, I’ve got this.

      The way I see it the MC03W would have me looking at 20 foot putts thinking, I’ve got this.

      MC01W or MC04W . I am currently playing Nike Irons, Wedges and Hybrid along with an old Nike OZ putter that I had to modify by filling the shaft with sand to add weight. I’ve been waiting for a weighted Nike Putter

      DEFINITELY the MC01(w). I got to putt with it the other night at Dick’s. I have a Ghost Manta, so I tried it along side that, along with the Method 001 and the Method Core and I have to say, this one feels SO much more solid. I tested the Cameron Select and Cameron Studio Select, and though the Cameron Select feels better and the Studio Select feels hollow with more skid, they are not as smooth as the MC01. I was shocked… might be time for a new putter. ;)

      Let me start by saying that I thought all Nike putters (and clubs for that matter) were garbage, until recently. I went to my favorite place local golf store (PGA Superstore… love this place) and gave the new Nike Method Core putter lineup a roll. I WAS IMPRESSED!

      I’ve putted with a Rife 2Bar Mallet for many years, great putter! I am skeptical about changing putters and I don’t do it frequently but these Nikes are making me think twice. Being a mallet guy, I started with the MC11W first. I dig it a lot…. great roll, nicely balanced/weighted, great feel, and I like the way it looks when I stand over it…. overall it instills a lot of confidence for me.

      Second, I tried the MC04W. I love the fatback look (bc its mallet-esque). This putter is similar in shape to the Odyssey Metal X-6 or that Scotty but this Nike beats that them in every category for me. If I moved away from a mallet I would go with the MC04W. Superb weighting and feel….. and a great amount of confidence when I stand over it. Plus, I am more of a slight arc putter than any other arc.

      Nike has finally done something I thought they never would…. consider putting one of their clubs into play….(I may give the new driver a look now too)

      Short story – MC04W would go straight into my bag if I had one…. Nice work Nike!

      MC03W – Unlike many I actually prefer the feel of an insert putter and own a very outdated model nike mallet now. It has been hit or miss for me mostly to blame is my inconsistent putting stroke (I’m working on it). I’m usually always on line but either smash it through the break or over compensate and leave myself praying for a long two putt. I have been thinking about going for a smaller head on my putter for a better look at address but the look of a blade never appealed to me. The 03 of the original method was almost perfect for me but the price was out of my range and I really want an inserted putter. So I think that the MC03W along with its weighted technology would be perfect for me all around.

      Why? Because I am the Canadian putter hacker king!
      I tend to pick typical square arc style putters that conflict with my straight back straight thru stroke..
      Is there a method to this madness? No… There isn’t… But there could be a method to solving my putter woes :)

      If I were to make a change it would definitely be MC11w. I have gamed an original Amazing Grace for a decade, even though I buy 2 or 3 putters every year. I will try to find a replacement, give the newbie a several week tryout and eventually go back to dancing with the gal what brung me. If I could find something that matched my stroke as well I would be a convert. My SAM numbers always have me just slightly inside out with a face angle slightly closed to my path but square to the target. This makes face balanced work out the best as I hit up a little through the ball with virtually no face rotation.

      MC04W hands down. Standard blade putters just aren’t for me. I simply don’t have any confidence in them. I’m currently using a mallet style (Ping Scottsdale Wolverine) but it is center-shafted and that is what I have to have for a mallet. I do prefer center-shafted also with a semi-mallet like the MC04W but I’m ok with a heel mount. I just need the extra heft of the semi over a standard mallet to give me confidence.

      It’s a tough call between the MC03w and the MC11w (belly version). I love the look of the 03 and it reminds me of my Cleveland Classic BRZ #2, which I have gamed up until recently. I switched to a belly about 3 months ago and have been loving it, so the 11 would also be a good fit. Since the ban is likely coming, I’d put the slight edge to the 03.

      MC11W is the one for me. As someone who loves but struggles with milled putters, having a high MOI mallet that has clean top lines and an insert that can be described as crisp sounds like it would bridge the gap nicely! Especially since it will fit my eye nicely being a symmetrical design from a top down view when trying to stay SBST.
