PING Ketsch – Designing and Manufacturing 2014’s Most Wanted Mallet Putter

(by Dave Wolfe and Tim Halberg)

Based upon your comments, I would say that many of you really enjoyed reading about our visit to PING HQ. If you missed those articles, you can find Part 1, HERE, and Part 2, HERE.

It was fun for me to take you all along as we toured the expansive aspects of the PING facility. You may find this hard to believe, but I actually skipped over part of our visit.

That’s right, there was more!

I wanted to hold a little something back for later. You know, like that last piece of pie that you stashed behind the pickle jar. Mmmm pie.

What is it that I kept from you? What piece of PING equipment deserves that hidden-pie treatment? Of course it’s the 2014 Most Wanted Mallet, the PING Ketsch.

Un-Ketsch-able

ketsch badge

Un-Ketsch-able. That’s what the PING Ketsch was in the mallet competition. It just pulled away from the competition. It seemed like our testers just couldn’t miss from the 5-foot mark. OK, they did miss two out of fifty putts. For those of you who have been out of school for a while, that comes out to 96%, earning the Ketsch a best-in-class A.

What I have for you today is a little more information about the design of the Ketsch, and also some great shots of how the Ketsch is made, courtesy of Golfspy Tim.

S-Ketsching the Design

Engineering and design seems the natural place to start a Ketsch discussion, as that is how PING develops all of its new products. The Ketsch was no exception. PING engineers did not set out to build this putter, but rather studied the science of putting, adding to their knowledge environment, then subsequently creating the Ketsch from their findings.

The foundation for the Ketsch really came from two separate studies; one about face impact patterns, and a second about alignment.

Face Impact Studies

grooves

PING engineers began their research process by exploring the putter face impact pattern in relation to player handicap. As I mentioned in the visit article, one of the cool things about working at PING is that you can choose to be a club tester a couple of times a week. For the engineers, this represents a whole bunch of data to work with.

Anyway, the study in many ways was similar to how impact position on a driver face impacts ball speed off the tee. This time though, it was ball speed off the putter face.

It is from this data that the PING engineers developed their TR groove system.

The TR grooves normalize ball speed across the face of the putter by reducing center-strike ball speed, and increasing ball speed on off-center hits. PING is not the first company to pursue this design idea, but I believe that others have used inserts rather than grooves to achieve the result.

A PING engineer explained to us that the TR grooves make the putter perform like it has a higher MOI, though this is more apparent in the Anser-like heads as opposed to the already-high-MOI mallets.

Basically, this allowed PING engineers to change the inertia of the head without changing the shape of the head. This is key, as many of those head shapes have proven to be quite successful (re. PING gold putter room).

Alignment Study

DSC_0018

Next, PING engineers returned to their tester pool, this time exploring the effect of different putter design elements on accuracy.

Their hope, in studying the head shape, lines, dots, and so on, was not just to develop one putter, but rather to generate knowledge that could be used in the development of all future putters. It’s knowledge first, then products at PING.

PING engineers determined three components that improved putter alignment/accuracy.

  1. A line going from the back to the front of the putter.
  2. A curve from the back to the front of the putter.
  3. Ball-width visuals (lines) on the top.

If you take the knowledge that led them to the TR Grooves, and combine it with the knowledge from the alignment study, you can see where the Ketsch design came from. Other PING putters created from this knowledge base include the PING Nome TR (tied for 2nd Most Wanted) and the Scottsdale TR Anser T (currently competing in the Most Wanted Blade competition). So far, the PING engineers are 2 for 3 with this product pool in our putter competitions. I too am curious how the Anser T will score.

DSC_0045

That gives you some insight into why the PING Ketsch was made. Let’s no take a little look at how the Ketsch is made.

Ketsching Fire

Back in Part 1 of our visit article, I mentioned how the shafts are glued into the Ketsch heads and then bent to meet the fit-for-stroke requirements. I bet that many of you assumed that like most of the other PING clubs, the Ketsch heads were manufactured elsewhere and then precisely assembled at PING. That may be the case with most of the other clubs, but not so with the Ketsch.

This is what the Ketsch looks like when it hits PING.

0053_2W2A4012

What you have there, fearless reader, is a block of aluminum. It is from this billet, that the Ketsch is carved. Think of how a statue comes from a block of marble. The statue hides inside the marble block, the artist need only find it.

With the Ketsch, the engineers have developed the sculpture, and the milling machine was tasked to find it. Here is the progression from block to putter:

First, the top of the putter is milled.

0055_2W2A4016

Next the bottom is milled.

0060_2W2A4036

Note the difference between the sole plates on the standard and counterbalanced models. That knob is where the extra weight comes from.

0062_2W2A4042

Finally, the Ketsch is ready for cosmetics and shafting.

Milling Madness Bonus Round: The PING Tour Wedge

Tim and I also were able to watch Gorge grooves being milled into the faces of PING’s Tour wedges.

The wedges hit the shop groove-less, looking like this.

0069_2W2A4065

Next, wedges are loaded three at a time into the milling machine.

0068_2W2A4062

The Gorge™ grooves are then cut.

0071_2W2A4072

The grooves are constantly checked for spec, making sure that they conform to USGA standards.

0056_2W2A4019

After all is said and done, the PING Tour wedges and the Ketsch putters. Head out to the customers, and a whole bunch of metal scrap heads to the recyclers.

Playing Ketsch

bottom

After all the design work and manufacturing precision that went into the development of the PING Ketsch, it’s little wonder that it already has multiple wins on multiple tours this season, and more importantly, it won MyGolfSpy’s 2014 Most Wanted Mallet competition by a mile.

I know that we will see more gold-plated Ketsch putters in the PING vault in coming months, as well as in lots of recreational golfer’s bags. Maybe even yours…

Win A Custom PING Ketsch

How would you like to own your very own Most Wanted mallet? The PING Ketsch can be yours just by leaving a comment about the Ketsch in the comments below. In about a week, we will pick a random winner, get your custom specs, and then PING will send a new custom Ketsch your way. It’s just that simple. Good Luck and I’ll Ketsch you later.

Has the new model of this come out yet? Since they don’t sell them on ping’s site it’s hard to tell if you’re getting the newer model or the old model. Is the newer model the cadence tr or is that a separate club all together? Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated!

I am a 12 handicapper who faithfully keeps stats of each round I play. Putting has been my Achilles heel when it comes to lowering my handicap. I used a demo Ketch for a round at the end of last season and couldn’t miss from five feet and in. Maybe more remarkable was my distance control; lots of tap-in par putts.

I bought the PING KETSCH when it came on the market ,I’m a Blade putter and honestly tried in earnest to have this mallett woork for me .In vain :I have révèrted to the NIKE MÉTHOD MCO and the TAYLOR MADE DAYTONA GHOST TOUR .
For m’y own use ,they are far superior .With a blade you feel exactly where you have hit the ball :with the mallett you just don’t know!
I précise I am a fairly good putter :28/30 puts per round .
I was told thecPING KETSCH was dicontinued because it’s ” non confirming “.Right or wrong ?

I bought a new ping Ketsch putter about a year ago. It is an OK putter I use it on occasion. Ping announced this summer that there was a manufacturing problem, stopped production and promised all Ketsch owners a $30.00 refund. I have contacted Ping numerous times, see below:

You asked: I owe a ketch putter #0060061R I have been told FOR MONTHS that there will be a $30.00 rebate. But NOTHING happens. Please explain. Our reply: We are still waiting for the website to go live for the rebate. Once that occurs, you will receive an email advising you how to proceed.

One would think that they could get the link running in 6 months. They must have Obama’s Obamacare webmaster working on it.

This putter has the lines that helps me see the line so much better. It feels like magic in my hands as I love the weighting of this putter. And I like the longer than standard length of this putter. It’s definitely a beauty and something I see where we will be good friends over the coming years.

Anything under five feet is in the hole, no matter the shape of the green. The lag putts from far out (20-30+ feet) are amazing – it seems easier to judge distance despite going up or down hill.

Great feedback. I did notice I was leaving solid strikes short due due to what I believe is from the graduated grooves, but once I had stroked it for a round that all polished out. I don’t even notice the miss hits at all. This one should be in the bag for the next ten years.

Great putter. Been playing it for several rounds now and whilst I still miss the odd putt I am getting far more confident. I used the ping app to determine putting stroke (straight) and then got my favourite length (34). What I would love is some sort of gadget that determines lie. I guessed it at 2 deg flat. Very close as it sits really well. Never had a better putter. Top notch! Thanks a bunch. Also been looking at irons. Currently playing i10s and wanted to love i25s. To much offset and I dont play enough for s55. Some of us draw / hook naturally so dont want offset. Please release a less offset I series set.

As a sleep-starved parent to a newborn, I’ve been in a bit of a stupor of late…but it was amusing nonetheless. Re. the putter, here’s a question for the design team at Ping (or the MGS community at large): to what extent does changing the shaft length in the adjustable version of the counterbalanced putter impact the ‘counterbalancing effect’ as compared to the counterbalancing in the fixed-length-shaft version? Does that make sense? No? Did I mention I was sleep-deprived…?

I now have played 27 holes with the Ketsch and also putted for about 4 hours on practice greens. The feel with this putter is ABOVE average. I believe this is due to the aluminum material used. It feels the same to me as the Scotty Cameron Detour putters that had aluminum inserts. This putter surpassed my expectations on lag putting, feel, alignment, and even the knee knockers. Its in the bag. I’m sure it will become a popular choice for professional golfers.

      Mike,
I know with other models, so I presume with the Ketsch, Ping makes an adjustable putter that goes from 31″ to 38″. Unless you want a belly-putter, you can get one that is longer to fit your height and stroke.

When my girlfriend informed me that I was to get a new putter for my birthday this was at the top of my list of putters to try primarily due to the results in the most wanted. After trying several stores in the hopes to find one, I have been told that they are bassically sold out here in Aus. I’ve been trying a lot of different putters over the last two weeks and at the moment the Karstan Answer 5 is my favourite off the face which just makes me want to get my hands on the ketsch even more. I’ve had to resort to putting in a special request through a teaching pro friend to the Ping rep to find and bring one along to there next demo day for me to try

At my age [ 73 ] and being a late starter in the great game, appearances are all important especially as an aid in “phsych-ing out” the opposition as you stand on the first tee. One of these would blow the opposition away, and therefore sinking putt after putt would simply be a bonus.

You do understand that every major media outlet visits PING and nearly every other OEM on an annual basis right? There’s absolutely nothing at all unusual about that at all. Way to get to the bottom of it, Sherlock. For someone who’s telling others to be smarter, you appear ABSOLUTELY OBLIVIOUS to the fact that PING (who incidentally for the record as a matter of fact, does not pay us a dime in advertising, and does not provide us with any more product or contest warez than any other OEM…actually it’s measurably less) spends considerably less money in advertising other places than many other brands. Has it occurred to you that where PING finishes in other test (I don’t really know, I don’t look often) isn’t a reflection of how much they spend at MyGolfSpy (again…it’s ZERO) but rather a reflection of how much money their competitors (who incidentally also spend ZERO here) spend elsewhere?

You want reality, here it is: There’s a quarter million bucks or so in ad dollars from big golf companies that we leave on the table annually. We don’t take money from Callaway or TaylorMade (or any other golf company for that matter). A Quarter Million Bucks. ZERO (MGS) vs. A QUARTER MILLION BUCKS (the other guys). Quadruple it for print. Be Smarter.

I don’t believe anyone else has laid out their testing protocols in as much detail as we have.

Your Fraud Detector is defective. Be Smarter.

But by all means, if you have proof that we’re “PAID by PING”, offer it up (you can’t because it doesn’t exist). Otherwise, as Tillman says, from a legal perspective, your comments border on libel.

As far as videos go…as a matter of “proof” of our tests, I’m not sure what they’d actually add. Be Smarter…Any idiot with a camera can film guys hitting golf balls and call it whatever they want. That said, it’s something we’ve looked into, but quite frankly, editing (if you’re going to do it well) takes a considerable amount of time, as does importing all of the data we collect, analyzing it, putting it into an understandable format, and finally writing up the results. We don’t have large team, and since time and time again we’ve learned that video content doesn’t actually perform well, we focus our efforts on what matters.

It’s great that they offer some user fitting capabilities when ordering from their site. I do wonder if the Slight-Arc model is a 30% (3:30) toe hang or much more such as 4:30 or 5:30. I do wish all brands would specify such specs so we don’t need to wait to determine find these out in a store or a forum via user comments. This is a somewhat important spec if you have been measured on a SamPutt lab but not critical, it’s of course possible to learn to putt with just about anything.

I have been reading really good things about the Ketsch putter so I went by one of our golf stores to see it. I don’t know what exactly is different from the other 100 or so putters I have owned, but it really rolls the ball well. If I don’t win one I guess I will have to just buy one!

I bought the PING KETSCH (Slightly Inside version ) after the excellent rating in GOLF SPY ,though I am a “BLADE PUTTER “.
I have being playing lately the wnner of last year’s contest ,the Blade NIKE MCO 1.
It took me some time to get used to the PING KETSCH :I have to admit it’s a fantastically accurate putter :it beat’s outright all the others within 9 feet .
On long lag puts ,15 to 25 feet ,I “feel “better the NIKE METHOD MCO 1.
      I carry both putters in my bag ,and switch in between them ,depending on distance (Of course not when playing in a competition ! );
Same with the drivers :the PING G 25 ,which came out number 2 in the GOLF SPY contest is my preferred driver, essentaly or its accuracy ,but I play also ,when distance is needed ,the KRANK FORMULA ,who didn’t do well in the GOLF SPY trial ,though it gives impressive distance ,but it’ a driver difficult to play for a not single figure handicap player (At 80 ,I still play to a 7 Handicap )

Ping Nome with an adjustable shaft is my current gamer. I was looking to upgrade it to the TR model last year. I am glad I did not, so now this putter with the TR technology and a counterbalanced shaft should be in my bag soon!
The adjustable shaft of my putter acts like a counterbalance, since my grip is at the normal position, and the balance of the shaft above my grip acts like a counterbalance one. I adjust my grip on the shaft for longer putts, I swing as usual but my hands are raised 1 or more inches and it allows me to use the same swing!

After the MGS test, I went to my local Ping shop to test out the Ketsch (adjustable model).

Result? I just can’t miss! I joked the the putting mat was rigged and then I brought my own blade putter. I was slightly less accurate with it compared to the Ketsch but I had to really concentrate with every stroke. Using the Ketsch allowed me to be more relaxed and not be so tensed up in comparison. The mallet just swings down on the correct path on it’s own and everytime it goes into the hole. The fitter advised

I just changed a whole set of irons and was actually looking to buy new woods but I might just use that money for the Ketsch since I probably won’t be able to win one as I’m from Singapore. Also I will use the putter more often than my driver/woods.

Realised I missed out on a sentence.

Grooves make for higher “off-center” ball speed than if hit in the sweetspot???? Grooves work like high MOI?? I am a Engineer, and this fits in the realm of bamboozlement. So why did this putter stood out? My theory is the white alignment markings’ location & design fit the eye of this group of MSG testers..

So here’s a test, redo the Mallet test with a different set of testers. Ketsch wins again, then I could be a believer….

After reading your PING HQ stories, it makes me realize the need to get a putter fitting. Plus with how much this blew all of the others off the green, I will have to roll it at a golf shop and if better than my Backstryke, look to make a switch. PING’s craftsmanship and attention to process are a beautiful combination.

I’ve been playing a black dot 355 gram Ketsch, 35″ with Superstroke 2.0 for about a month now. I tested it extensively (about 250 measured putts from 3 distances) before I bought it. While it’s a very good putter, and a slight improvement over my Odyssey 2-ball, it is by no means a birdie machine or automatic inside of 5 feet. I wouldn’t rate it any better or worse that most others I’ve tried from that distance.

Actually, I find that it excels at lag putts, but I do tend to fight a tendency to leave everything short regardless of length. It has taken me a long time to train myself to mentally “blast” putts by the hole in order to get them just past the hole. I have to pick spots 3 to 5 by the hole and putt to them, or I constantly come up a foot short. It is very good on slippery downhill putts, however and I’m able to snuggle up closer regardless of slope.

For what it’s worth, I couldn’t find a CB version anywhere when I went to buy last month, now they can be had easily on ebay.

One thing I notice about this club is that the alignment features seem to work better for me in an outdoor demo setting. The “fang” shape along with the ball width bar that the main sight line is painted on seem to jump out at you a lot more in natural lighting. This is my long rambling way of recommending that you try it outside if you get the chance.

Long time fan of Ping Putters. I have used a Craz-e for years and years. Everytime I think I will try something else, that Craz-e ends up back in the back within a month or two. Would love to have a new Ping in the bag!

As someone who had 45 (!) puts in his last round, I’m seriously considering a switch. My current putter nearly found itself at the bottom of the lake on hole 18 last weekend.

Really looking forward to pitting the Ketsch against my beloved STX xForm3 (itself no slouch in MGS competition). BTW, how do I get one of those raw, milled Ketsches? Sweet!

I never really considered any Ping equipment, but they seem to be doing well in all the Most Wanted testing. It makes me want to go try out the Ketsch putter. Maybe it’s time to trade in my Odyssey.

We had a demo days last month just after your test, and the Ping rep had one in the van. I got to try it, and it was NICE!! Would love to spend more time with it to compare with my gamer.

The Ketsch presents such a struggle for me as I really do not enjoy using mallet putters. However, nobody can do without a 96% success rate inside 5 feet. I may need to switch.

I’ve annoyed my buddies at the local golf shops with my constant pestering of when they will get a lefty Ketsch in stock. Think small child on long car trip asking if we’re there yet. So far just right hand on the racks. Needless to say, I’ve developed quite the stroke by putting right handed with the Ketsch. It looks great at address.

This club has been at the top of my ‘most wanted club of 2014’ since the putting results were released. I suck at putting so seeing the results gave me hope. Pretty cool to see how it’s made and hand bent for stroke.

This Ketsch putter has been seriously ruining my golf mind recently!

With every missed putt “ketsch” echoes in my mind. The results just don’t lie. Seeing your review and test data it’s definitely caught my eye. Never having a Ping putter before, this would be a perfect first experience!

Love the articles and Ping as a company.

Oh damn I would like the counter balanced version, love the shape and really want to return to Ping putters after years away and my putting needs all the help it can get…..5 footers for me are a big problem and that anchoring ban isn’t likely to help me…..

my Ping i20 irons have been a revelation, can see me moving more towards ping as the next season or two comes round.

This is literally the first putter I’ve been excited about. I’ve never been one to be impressed by the look or even feel of a putter, I want results and the test results were extremely intriguing. Now I’m just waiting for the local stores/pro shops to keep enough in stock so I can try the different styles…so far, there have only been one model available when I visited.

On the heels of the MGS tests, I test drove one of these at a PGA Superstore and bought it, immediately. I don’t know if it’s the fact I know it did so well in the MGS test, the TR technology, feel, etc, but this putter is no joke. Speed control is a breeze. Balls end up around the hole regardless of where you hit it on the face. The putter defintely increased my confidence. Recently, I holed birdie putts in the 15′ plus range and par putts in the 5-7′ range under tournament conditions. Granted, it was a scramble, but a birdies are birdies when you are trying to win something. Long story short, the ball goes where you aim it. It’s worth a try if you are in the market.

I believe that the Ping offices in Germany are in a town called Ketsch. Hence the name. BTW I have the putter and it is currently saving me 3 strokes per round on slow greens. Can’t wait for the burned out greens this summer, it should only get better.
