Coming Soon – MyGolfSpy’s 2014 “Most Wanted” Driver Test

Coming Soon – MyGolfSpy’s 2014 “Most Wanted” Driver Test

Last April we published the inaugural edition of our Most Wanted Driver Test. Goal was simple, conduct the most comprehensive, data-driven test the industry had ever seen.  Show how the top drivers of 2013 performed, and show all the data to back it up.  No marketing, no hype, no medals just results.  And let the results speak for themselves.

Not only do we feel like we succeeded in doing just that, but in 2014 it’s going to be even better.  No longer will there be any question when golfers ask which is the #1 Driver in Golf, you will now have that answer.

So, for those who can’t wait for the 2014 version, I have good news. We’re going to be publishing our 2014 Driver Test much earlier this year.  It is coming in the next few weeks.

Invites Have Been Sent

Invitations were sent to twenty two different manufacturers. Each was invited to submit anything and everything from their 2014 lineup. Manufacturer and driver totals have exceed last year’s count. What that means is that once again we’ll be able to offer you the most comprehensive (#Datacratic) comparison of 2014 drivers you’ll find anywhere.

The rules for participation are the same.

Manufacturers have been invited to provide driver samples in a range of lofts and flexes so that that we best fit our pool of testers. Anything that can be purchased “off-the-rack” by the consumer is fair game. This includes tour/pro heads and tour/tp shafts. If you can buy it, manufactures can and should send it.

For our part, we have 3 improvement goals for this year’s test: Test more drivers, simplify the data/scoring, and build for the future. I’ll expand on what all of that means as we get closer to publication, but sufficed to say we’re extremely confident that this year’s test is going to positively kill it. As the guys at Callaway would say…#BOOM!

police-lineup-wall2

Who’s Out

The participant list has grown substantially, and all the drivers participating have now arrived. So, as always we believe in being 100% transparent regarding not only how the testing is done but who chose to participate and who didn’t.  That means if you participate we tell the readers and if you don’t…well…its only fair to tell the readers that too.  They deserve to know if a brand they would like to see included chose not to participate and why.

Companies who declined our invitation to participate :

  • Both Tom Wishon and Geek Golf will not have new product available in time for the test. (for obvious reasons they aren’t able to participate).
  • Miura Golf  (Facebook) declined our invitation (irons remain their focus).
  • Bombtech Golf (Facebook) for an ever-expanding list of reasons, has regrettably declined to participate.
  • Titleist (Facebook) has declined our invitation and has declined to provide a specific reason for their decision. Draw your own conclusions.
  • Kick X Golf (Facebook) failed to respond to multiple email messages.

* If you would like to see these companies participate, feel free to contact at the links provided above to voice your concern.

The Competitors (Who’s In)

1. Wilson Staff FG Tour M3

Last year was a proof of concept year for Wilson Staff. With the D100 doing well at retail, former Adams designer, Michael Vrska, was given the greenlight to push ahead with the FG Tour Series. The FG Tour M3 is Wilson Staff’s first ever adjustable driver. The dark matte grey 460cc head is adjustable from 8.5° to 11.5°.

Wilson FG Tour M3-7

Stock Shafts: Aldila RIP Phenom50, Aldila RIP Phenom NL 60
Retail Price: $349.99

2. ONOFF 2014 Type-D and Type-S (Gravity Control)

Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) powerhouse brings us thee Type-D (Red Driver) and Type-S Drivers. More than a few of you have asked us to include ONOFF in one of our reviews, and we’re more than a little excited to do just that.

The Type-S will be tested by our higher swing speed (and generally higher spin) players, while the higher launching Type-D is designed with the average golfer in mind.

The Typse-D features a joint hosel design that allows for loft and lie to be adjusted by 1° in either direction.

ONOFF-1

Stock Shafts: ONOFF Smooth Kick MP-513D, ONOFF Smooth Kick MP-614D, Labospec Tataki 60
Retail Price: $700.00

3. Tour Edge Exotics XCG7 and XCG7 Beta

Tour Edge’s absence from last year’s test was glaring. This year, they refuse to be left out.

Our average swing speed players will be testing the 460cc XCG7 while our higher swing speed/higher spin guys will be testing the 440cc deep-faced XCG7 Beta. Both models are adjustable from 8.5° to 12°. Obviously we don’t know how they’ll stack up once the swinging starts, but I’m certain our testers are going to love the look of the new model.

TourEdge XCG7-12

Stock Shafts: Fujikura Exotics Fuel/Fuel Tour (Standard), Matrix Exotics White Tie/Red Tie/Black Tie (Beta)
Retail Price: $299.99, $349.99 (Beta)

4. PowerBilt Air Force One N7 DFX

PowerBilt is back for a 3rd time (1 review + our 2013 Golf’s Most Wanted) with their latest driver the N7 XFD. Like previous PowerBilt drivers it’s Nitrogen-charged, which as you should by now know, PowerBilt says creates more ballspeed and subsequently distance.

Overall last year’s model performed well enough, but was positively abused by our testers over some design elements that could be described as tramp-stampy. This year’s graphics have been refined, but the deep face that plenty of guys love remains a signature.

If you’re looking for a longshot that could pay off, here’s your horse.

AFO N7 DFX-1

Stock Shafts: Graphite Design G-Series/Fujikura Motore F3
Retail Price: $299.99

5. Tommy Armour 845

As far as good story goes, none in our test will like surpass the Tommy Armour 845. The last time I saw the once popular brand was roughly 8 years ago on the shelf at Dick’s. The brand almost disappeared into obscurity before becoming the house brand at Sports Authority. That doesn’t mean you should write it off. After years of questionable management of the brand, Sports Authority brought in Paul Boe to revitalize the line.

Boe was part of the hybrids team at Adams…you know, the guys that kicked Sonartec’s ass and made Adams the #1 Hybrid in Golf. The dude has legit street cred. Rather than outsource development (as was the case in the past), Boe, along with former Adams guy David Martin, handle the design work for the Tommy Armour line.

If you’re looking for an additional excuse to consider Tommy Armour. Think about this; while nearly every other driver in our test is $300 or more, the Tommy Armour 845 is currently being sold for $129, and while normal retail price is a relative steal at $149, Sports Authority will occasionally run $99 specials on the driver.

Tomy Armour -11

Stock Shafts: Apollo Shadow Tommy Armour 845
Retail Price: $149.00

6. Cobra BiO Cell Driver

Cobra’s entry in this year’s test is the new BiO Cell. The new model features updated 8-way adjustability, a larger effective sweet zone (more ball speed across more of the face), and retains Cobra’s SmartPad technology designed to keep the club square at address regardless of how the MyFly Sleeve is set up.

While Cobra hasn’t moved away from its signature color (blue, red, silver, and orange are still available) for the traditionalists among us, the BiO Cell is also available in black. All colors feature visible crown cell weighting towards the rear of the club.

Cobra BIO Cell-1

Stock Shafts: Project X – PXv
Retail Price: $299.00

7. Cleveland 588 Altitude and Custom

Cleveland’s Altitude is billed as an ultralight model that gives more distance to game-improvement, and moderate swing speed players. We’ll see about that! Our higher swing speed/low launch/more aggressive hitters will be swing the Custom version of the 588.

While last year’s Classic finished middle of the pack it was most certainly a driver that I enjoyed hitting. With some known Cleveland fans in this year’s testing pool, it’s safe to assume that this is one of the drivers that some of our guys are going to be excited to hit.

Cleveland 588-3

Stock Shafts: Matrix RADIX
Retail Price: $299.00

8. Krank Formula 5

A bit like the PING Anser last year, the Krank Formula 5 was reviewed as a one-off, but is back again to go head to head against basically everybody who matters in the driver game.

By now you should know the story. A long driver crossover trying to make inroads into the 18 hole game, Krank has the reputation for being one of the longest drivers in golf (however it’s played).

Fresh off their victory at the RE/MAX Long Drive Championship, Krank is hoping that our Most Wanted Driver Test will make it 2 in a row for the Formula 5.

Krank Formula 5-1

Stock Shafts: Fujikura Inertia Tour
Retail Price: $399.00 (Special Price)

9. Nike VRS Covert 2.0 and VRS Covert Tour 2.0

The most visually stunning driver in our 2013 test was, if we’re all being honest here, arguably the biggest disappointment in our test as well. While both the Performance and Tour models produced some monster drivers, overall it didn’t quite match up to the top tier drivers in our test. VRS Covert was the driver everyone wanted to love, but nobody did.

For 2014 Nike is back with the Covert 2.0 series. The aesthetics are similar (my 2 cents, still the most stunning in the test), but both models have been refined with the most noteworthy addition being that of Fly-Brace technology, which Nike claims reduces energy loss due to vibration (particularly at the rear of the club).

I hit the new Covert 2.0 series at Nike’s Innovation Unleashed event, and while I’m certain the new models are in fact better, we won’t really know how good they are until we get them on the launch monitor with the rest of the clubs in this year’s test.

Nike VRS Covert 2-12

Stock Shafts: Mitsubishi Rayon Kuro Kage Black HBP/ Mitsubishi Rayon Kuro Kage Silver (Tour)
Retail Price: $299 / $399 (Tour)

10. Sinister Golf Agent Orange

The 10th entry in our 2014 test is a name you may not recognize. Hell, I had only just heard of Sinister Golf myself when they reached out to us and asked to be included in our test.

Sinister Golf began with an idea to create not only a brand, but also a movement in a small, yet powerful community. In that respect, the Sinister story doesn’t sound much different from our own.

We honestly have no idea what to expect from the Agent Orange, but when you’ve got a few companies going out of their way to avoid our driver test, we’re more than happy to oblige a smaller brand willing to do whatever it takes to get in. Besides, why should we let Cobra lay claim to being the only orange driver in the test.

Agent Orange-1

Stock Shafts: Sinister drivers are built to order, however, our test samples feature Fujikura EXS shafts.
Retail Price: $289

11. Adams XTD

Adams is telling a pretty interesting story with their new XTD. While they’re telling us it has the hottest face in golf, the more interesting piece is the focus on tight tolerances.

The Adams philosophy is that the XTD driver you buy will perform just like the one you tried in the story. The idea is that all clubs aren’t created equally. Some drivers hit the USGA’s max CT, and some…well, some may come up a little bit short. It’s a luck of the draw type of thing.

With the XTD Driver, Adams has a tightly controlled manufacturing process that measures the CT of every head at 4 different points during the manufacturing process. Sure, everybody wants max COR. With the XTD, Adams makes sure you get it.

Adams XTD-1-2

Stock Shafts: Matrix 6Q3 (Red Tie)
Retail Price: $399.99

12. Cobra BiO Cell+

When we announced that Cobra’s BiO Cell driver would be part of our test, there was plenty of speculation about BiO Cell+. Did Cobra choose to send only BiO Cell? Did MyGolfSpy not want BiO Cell, or were we just holding off on the announcement?

It was that last one.

Joining BiO Cell in our test is BiO Cell+ and its Venollum crown. More ZL than Amp Cell, BiO Cell+ is (loft for loft) expected to launch a little bit lower, and spin a little less than BiO Cell.

Cobra BIO Cell+-1

Stock Shafts: Matrix 6Q3 (Red Tie)
Retail Price: $399.99

13. PING i25

Under embargo until January 2nd, we weren’t allowed to tell you that the PING i25 Driver was part of our test. Now we can…and so we’re telling you that it is.

The i25 replaces the PING i20, which remains the #1 driver we’ve ever tested. While we fully expect that the i25 will hold its own, particularly among our faster, more aggressive, higher swing players, like some others in this test, the lack of 12.5° may hurt its overall chance. It’s not really designed for those guys anyway, so pay attention to the results from our lower loft players.

PING i25 Driver-21

Stock Shafts: PING PWR, PING PWR Tour
Retail Price: $399.99

14. Callaway Big Bertha

In case you haven’t heard, she’s back, and not only that, she’s going to be a part of our test.

There’s no bigger story in the golf equipment world right now than the return of Big Bertha, so it’s a pretty safe assumption that golfers are going to be very interested to see how well this lady (with her sexy adjustable perimeter weighting) can hold her own against the other boys in the test.

Callaway Big Bertha-1

Stock Shafts: Mitsubishi Fubuki Z
Retail Price: $399.99

15. YONEX i-EZONE TX

A Pro model of sorts, the YONEX i-EZONE is 445cc , has a deep face, and when you look at it from the side…man; the profile is distinctive.

There are a few unknowns in this test, but few if any are more compelling then this YONEX offering. This will be the first time YONEX has been included in our testing, and we’re definitely looking forward to seeing how they do.

Yonex EZONE IEZONE TX-1

Stock Shafts: YONEX Nanometric
Retail Price: $449.99

16. PING G25

Back again for the 2nd year in a row is the PING G25. The G25 performed well across the board, and realistically, a few extra yards here or there and it could have finished on top.

It’s a new year, and while most of the driver are different, you just never know. The G25 is one of those rare clubs that allows lower swing speed players to thrive while still remaining playable for more aggressive, higher swing speed types.

PING G25-2

Stock Shafts: PING TFC 189D
Retail Price: $349.99

17. Mizuno JPX-EZ

Last year limited options combined with the lack of adjustability hurt the Mizuno JPX 800 Driver. While average swing speed guys did well with it, higher swing speed players would almost certainly have benefited from less loft to help take some of the spin off. That was then.

This year Mizuno is offering up the JPX-EZ. It’s the first adjustable hosel driver from Mizuno, and we hope that the added flexibility that comes from Mizuno’s QuickSwitch means better numbers for both our low loft and high trajectory players.

Mizuno JPXEZ-2

Stock Shafts: Fujikura Orochi
Retail Price: $299.99

18. Callaway X2 Hot & X2 Hot Pro

What needs to be said here? When you’re the defending overall champion it makes nothing but sense to come back and defend your crown with the latest model.

It’s really simple. X Hot won last year. Can X2 Hot repeat?

Callaway X2Hot-1aCallaway X2Hot-6b

Stock Shafts: Aldila Tour Blue / Aldila Tour Green
Retail Price: $349.99

19. YONEX EZONE XP

For my money, the YONEX EZONE XP is the single most compelling entry in our test…at least as far as having a good story goes.

The XP has Tungsten in the head, and Tungsten in the grip, with a lightweight shaft in-between. YONEX calls the design a “breakthrough” that leads to more power from the same effort. At the very least, the EZONE XP is a pretty damn cool looking driver.

Yonex EZONE XP-1

Stock Shafts: YONEX EX300
Retail Price: $349.00

20. Callaway Big Bertha Alpha

You didn’t think Bertha would show up without the Alpha did you? Two words for you: Gravity Core.

Big Bertha Alpha’s entry means that Callaway will have 3 different drivers vying for the title of Golf’s Most Wanted Driver (2014 Edition). And to think, they could have sent FT Optiforce too.

Callaway Big Bertha-13

Stock Shafts: Fubuki ZT
Retail Price: $499.00

21. TaylorMade JetSpeed

The continuation of the low/forward CG story that began with the SLDR, JetSpeed should not be overlooked in this test.

Offering more forgiveness than SLDR, with just as much pop, TaylorMade’s lower priced offering is a serious threat to walk away with the crown.

TaylorMade JetSpeed Driver-2

Stock Shafts: Matrix Velox T 49/ Matrix Velox ST 60 (TP)
Retail Price: $299.00/$399.00 (TP)

22. TaylorMade SLDR

No doubt the one everybody’s been waiting to see (if only because most of you were expecting it anyway). It’d be a little silly to call it the Most Wanted Driver test if we left out the current #1 selling driver in golf.

With as many bells and whistles as you’ll find on any driver ever, the SLDR is equal parts hype and performance. We know the low and forward CG can produce absolutely massive distance, but how will the SLDR hold up on those strikes that aren’t exactly dead solid nutted?

We’re about to find out.

TaylorMade SLDR Driver-1

Stock Shafts: Fujikura Speeder 57 / Fujikura MOTORE Speeder TS 7.3 (TP)
Retail Price: $399.00/$499.00 (TP)

23. Wilson D100

Joining the PING G25 as a holdover from last season, the Wilson D100 is back, and ready to make another run.

Truthfully, the ultralight design, coupled with a limited section of lofts and flexes means the D100 probably won’t provide an ideal fit for everyone. That said, I’m all but certain there won’t be another driver in the test that, swing for swing, is as much fun to hit.

Wilson D100-1

Stock Shafts: Matrix Ozik HD 4.1
Retail Price: $299.00

I would love to test some of these drivers I hit the irons well but the driver is a different beast I have been through probably 8 drivers in the last year and cant seem to find one I can consistently hit ive been wanting to try the covert tour, krank formula, and ping i25 but dont want to buy one without hitting them first because they are all expensive to not like then have to take a loss trading it in.

Does no one comment over the Agent orange driver ? Agent orange was used in chemical warfare against Vietnam, it is used in most broadleaf weed killers we use today, you know 2 4-D, but it was used in very high potency in Vietnam, killing millions of people of poisoning, it shocks me that someone so stupid, would put this on a driver like it is a laughing matter. Google what the results of the poisoning does to people, and tell me if it is a laughing matter, come on people wake up, I remember when golf was about talent, goes to show you what this sport is coming to, anything for a dollar.

Hey Mike i share your sentiments. I’m not sure because i have now way of verifying it but i don’t think that was the intentions behind the name. The font on the bottom of the driver is done in a very “James Bond” way. I think like the movie Reservoir Dogs where all the hit men are named after a color. Like “Mr.Brown, Mr. White, Mr. Pink…etc”. I would imagine if they continue with that name, next years model might be called “agent blue” or “agent red” and so on. I will admit the name was puzzling at first and maybe insensitive but i’m sure no company would pay homage to such a horrific event. We all know the events of the Vietnam war were unspeakable and suffering on both “sides” continues to today and maybe even millions of citizens of Vietnam still suffer from birth defects cause by agent orange. And of course the nightmares that haunt many of our vets from first hand experience. But I think sometimes we read to far into names just like TMag and the “Lethal” ball. I’m sure TMag didn’t think it would be funny if someone got hurt from a ball called lethal. Hahaha besides with the way Tiger was swinging at Doral it looks like Nike balls are claiming more victims……that was meant to lighten the mood ;) Conversely maybe companies should start to consider the names of their products more carefully.

Thought burnz’s comment was a joke but I would love to see that as well. Also comparison’s of other year club’s I.e. cobra amp cell vs bio cell, SPDR vs. R1, etc. Also, I do believe we would get so much more out of these tests if we had a control group shaft used w different heads. I just don’t believe you can compare a bio cell + with a 62 gram shaft to a SPDR with a 57 gram shaft. I truly believe that your test is a test of shafts much more than of heads! Please more shaft comparisons w same heads or compare some diff heads w same shafts. Thanks for the info for what it’s worth though.

Very Interesting scanning through the available selections. I’m quite impressed with the looks on the Yonex Drivers. If they perform as well as they look they will sell a lot of them.
Years ago I owned the Yonex Graphlex, they were great. Also Happy to see the Krank being
tested. I sincerely hope you remember on each test to make a comment regarding whether they would be suitable for Seniors. YES THERE’S A LOT OF US THERE. LOL.

Having just looked back at last years results I think those expecting there to be a standout winner are going to be highly disappointed. As Mark Crossfield keeps stating, with the COR rule having been in place for a good many years, you’re never going to get a club that suddenly goes 30 yds further. He’s just tested the BB and BBA and got the typical results he’d expect for his swing speed. There was a difference having the gravity core high or low but it was only a few yards. In this test last year in the ‘longest’ category there was only 3 yds difference betwen the top 5 in terms of overall distance and for high and slow swing speeds. In the overall longest category it was only 10 yds from first to last. There will be no magic club.

IMO the late release of the test results will prove to be beneficial. Instead of relying on anyone else’s swing outcomes, one will be more inclined to rely on their on fitting outcomes. Last year(and for the first time) I opted to ignore my own testing and purchased the beloved X-Hot.Alas, it proved to be as terrible a driver(for me) as any I have gamed in 54 years of golfing. this year I look forward to simply comparing my own results and impressions with those generated by MGS testers. I love the SLDR which I played last year and I look forward to playing the BB which I have spent 6-8 hours demoing the past week or so.

All of you that are salivating to the point that you are beginning to question the MGS staff of milking or calling it ridiculous that they have not released the results have obviously never written a review for a club. Much less 20+ clubs at the same time. Be patient, when the results are ready they will release them. There is no reason for them to “milk” the release of the information. I would argue the opposite. The faster they can get the results released their website traffic will skyrocket as all golfers in the market for a driver will rush to read the results. If you are in such a hurry to buy the winning driver, just buy a Sinister Golf Agent Orange. Then you will be ahead of the rush! :)

Oh…I know it’s horrible how long this is taking us. Let me break it down for you.

Yes, we are trying to build buzz, which is why this post went up when the first drivers started to arrive. We can’t start testing until everything arrives. There was a solid 2+ weeks between when the first club came in, and when the last came in.

As for testing itself, here are some quick numbers. 6 guys had to hit 23 drivers (including a control club), so effectively our team has to hit 138 drivers. Testers hit an average of 18 “valid” shots with each club”. Factor in the throwaways (mishits, misreads, and other dropped shots), and the sum total of golf balls hit is over 3500.

Total time spent doing nothing but hitting golf balls exceeded 40 hours.

Each one of those shots results in 11 data points, plus 4 additional calculated fields. With 23 different clubs in the mix, that yields an additional 13,000 or so individual calculations (per testers); things like individual averages for all data points, along with standard deviations and whatnot). That’s before we consider the tables that handle averages for distance, total driving, and accuracy (not to mention the accuracy formulas).

Consider the realities that new content must be created while testing is happening, a week lost to the PGA show, and the fact that graphics have to be created and write-ups have to be done, and well…I think we’re actually doing a hell of a job delivering in a reasonable timeframe.

But hey, if you want something quick where everybody gets a medal (because licensing that virtual medal brings in big money), where the judging panel talks about things like demand and perceptions but never data, that’s cool. Check your newsstand.

Tony – Thanks so much for the reasoned response. I really do appreciate the work you guys do and how daunting a task this is. It is because of ambitious testing like this that this site is the best out there. Sorry if my impatience got the best of me. It’s only because I’m looking for a new driver and am really looking forward to seeing the results to help me with my decision. And, no, I’m not the only one who is getting a little impatient, btw. Look above. I also understand your desire to get some buzz going about this process. Totally understandable. I just think you guys could be a little more up front about when to expect the results. Thanks, again, for the reply. And I do think you guys do a hell of a job!

How are adjustable drivers going to be tested? Same specs for all the testers, multiple tests per tester or will every tester set the driver to what they believe will fit them best?

I often hear that what is best for you isnt always what you think is best for you, loft wise.

      Reply

      Tony Covey

Great question. We have multiple lofts, flexes, and where applicable stock shafts for each driver in the test. We start from a baseline of what we think *should* work for each tester (our baseline is derived from past experience with the testers, not what they have played in the past or what they *think* fits them).

On the extremes it’s fairly easy to fit. What I mean by that is we have one tester who almost always does best with as little loft, and as stiff of a low launch/low spinning shaft as we can give him.

On the other end, we have a golfer who almost always does best with as much loft as we can possibly give him in a regular flex shaft (although what works from a stock model varies).

From there we do some basic fitting for each driver. If we get better numbers with a different loft, shaft, or flex, that’s what they ultimately go with. We do the same with adjustable drivers, but they do give us a bit more flexibility. While there are always exceptions where we might tweak for loft, generally, I try and leverage the adjustability from a face angle perspective; using it primarily to get the ball started on the most beneficial line.

BEN HOGAN used to say that THE drive was THE most important shot of THE game:he chose exactly THE spot on which to land his shot:it had to be a flat surface ,whenever possible of course :so THE best driver club must be a compromise between carry and précision.
THE KRANK FORMULA 5 ,with THE FUJIKURA TOUR shaft is exactly that ,as précise that THE HONMA BERES ,but with more carry.Knowing THE quality of THE HONMA BERES shafts which are handpicked when you buy a 4or 5 STAR shaft ,that’s a huge compliment .

I’m not a “long driver “(80 years of âge ,but Still playing to handicap of 7 ,with a full prothesis in each knee , THE best part of my game is THE part shots ,from 120 Yards in ,THE chipping and THE putting .But you have to get to THE 120 Yards distance:that’s where THE FORMULA 5 KRANK Driver does help a lot .
I’m a fan of MIKE BAUMAN ‘s”ULTIMATE SWING TRAINER “,I parties every single day with it .I also use THE SWING CHAIN and THE TORSO BURNER.They are fabulous For THE dévelopment of THE core muscles also .
As your are an”aficionado”of KRANK ,what’s your opinion of their Fairway Woods and Hybrids .On THE PAR 5’s you need a second long shot :I Play now an 18° HONMA HYBRID Four Star shaft ,it’s pretty long (And straight )but KRANK has a 16° HYBRID which may be longer :in GENERAL I feel more confortable with irons than with FAIRWAY WOODS ,I used to Play 1 and 2 irons ,but there are nô longer “fashionable “so I converted to THE HYBRIDS .

Hark! The Ping I25 preview article suggests that the driver tests are already underway. You have indicated that this year’s results will be published earlier than April. When might earlier be? As I stare out at Wisconsin’s frozen tundra, I fear that I might purchase 2 or 3 of the aforementioned drivers prior to the release of the test results. I do not know how long I can hold on.

I think SMTR is right on with the PING i25… but I insist keep the callaway X-Hot of last year, and remake all the tests with it, not just the numbers of last year. Last thing to said, talk about the shaft (brand, flex & lenght…)… Keep the same show format with fast & slow swing, very useful, stay objective, it’s a quality hard to maintain.

I purchased 3 of the top 5 drivers for high swing speed players. In the end, I ended up with a 4th pruchase of the G25 driver that will be in my bad for a while. The shootouts are what I use a lot to purchase equipment. My putter was also from a shootout.

So… Titleist has declined to send drivers for review. Could it be because they will release a new driver in 2014, let’s say a 914 D2 and D3?

With the accelerated release schedule of TaylorMade, Callaway and others, Titleist might feel it’s becoming more difficult to release a new driver “only” every two years.

It would be curious to see how some of the non-conforming drivers that plague ebay (for instance Roketto) stack up against the money clubs. As a suggestion for this year could you capture some video of each driver tested to gain an understanding of how it sounds and tester reaction to hitting it. Thanks again for pulling this together. As for Titleist deciding not to participate in your test (with the 913), one explanation would be that they will be releasing a new driver in the spring, after your results come out.

It’s true they have been on a two-year cycle, but with Taylormade and Callaway currently in a nuclear war of new releases, Titleist could try to stay in the conversation with a new 914 driver.

Could you include a spin rate comparison of the various heads in the review? Maybe as a little info-graphic or icon at the top of each club review? Not actual numbers (everyones will be different of course), but just an indication from 1-100 as to how much spin the head has. That used to be one of the only useful (and accurate) things that GD included in its ‘reviews’. Not sure if they do it any longer.

Going to ask this since up a little bit it was hinted at but never responded to; is Cobra going to send you a Bio Cell+ as well as the regular Bio Cell? And for the clown that calls all of our choices “Run of the Mill” jump in a hazard for me. Krank may have a good long drive competitor but I am willing to bet that my Cobra Amp Cell with my Axe 6 shaft can keep up with it and beat it. We have no Krank dealers anywhere around here and non of the shops will even consider them, why I do not know but I would like to give one a trial so I can base my thoughts on actual use.

It is good to see the Wilson driver in the mix, added a Fybrid half/half to my bag, they are doing good things these days. Oh hell who am I kidding, I want to hit all the drivers you have pics of so far lol but Dear Krank people feel free to send me a driver in 9.5* stiff flex low torque in the spring so an average Joe golfer can tell you how it hits here in Michigan!

That is some good info about Tommy Armour as a company, I had no idea they were back to designing their own stuff. Hopefully the brand and company can survive, there is a lot of heritage with that name, hoping for the best for them.
The Tour Exotics look great, used to play a TE driver….. for all its pop and distance, I could very rarely control it, ended up giving it to a friend on a fantasy football bet. I am very interested to see how the Exotics hold up, specifically in the accuracy category.
Powerbilt did surprisingly well last year, hoping to see a repeat.

I must say, Cobra is one of the companies I am most looking forward to, along with Callaway. I am a bit surprised they didn’t send the Bio Cell+ and it’s truly premium shafts, but if the more broad spectrum Bio Cell can hold its own, then I’m sure the Bio+ would have also. As I said earlier, I am completely pumped for this and I love the “showdown at the o.k. corral” feel of all these clubs in one test!!!!

“Bombtech sits out the big driver test, but sends drivers to a few MGS readers for review”

Wait. I though the reason they couldn’t take part in the shoutout was because they could not afford to send three drivers without having to increase prices for everyone? How are they proposing to send drivers to readers without facing the same issue? And if they CAN send a few drivers without destroying their business, then why can’t they do this for the shoutout? I’m confused.

Probably the best thing would have been for them just to politely decline to take part and leave it at that. It has made for fascinating reading though.

Some of you are saying MGS is guilty of “bullying” BombTech. I don’t see it that way at all.

MGS simply put it out there the “reasons” why BombTech doesn’t want to participate. That’s not bullying, that’s showing everyone what’s going on.

BombTech is getting their 15 minutes, but they’re not doing themselves any favors here. To say they don’t want to give up 3 drivers at the sake of giving up profits is literally laughable. What they’re doing by not participating tells me everything I need to know about them.

Drivers are fickle creatures (as the variences in club results never fails to illistrate on this sight). What one guy will rant and rave about as the best driver of all time, another may curse ever every letter that spells its name. But I think we all can rest assured that any of the Drivers that crack the top ten on the extensive “Datacratic” system MGS has formulated; are all quality clubs and are ablolutely worth a few swings.

I guarantee people bought drivers based on last year’s top finishers. Of course they did. That’s what they come here to see so they know what they want to try and buy. A few years ago I got a 9064 based on what I read here. I wasn’t one of the guys who emailed X to let him know about it either.

It’s very telling when a big talker starts making up excuses when it’s time to put up or shut up so to speak. The down side to doing that is MUCH bigger than whatever the results would be by putting the driver in the test. Not sayin’, just sayin’.

Well said and agree 100%! I am one of those who bought the 9064 based off MGS review whom did not email you. I still game that driver. Hell, I even play the 2010 Mac Gregor VIP forged irons which happen to kick my custom Wishon irons out of the bag! I love those irons and never would have looked at them if it weren’t for MGS! I, as many others have stated, would like to see past winners(high scorers) put up against the current equipment! If you’re looking for good reviews this is, hands down, the site to see! Thanks MGS!

I’ve probably received close to 500 emails from readers who purchased the Adams 9064 driver that was #1 in our review system. And this is only from the readers who took the time to email. We had about 150,000 readers a month then now we have close to 400,000.

I am fairly certain the much more in-depth head-to-head version sold a few big sticks.

Now that being said, I do see your point, but honestly there is more downside for a clear dominate #1 player to not participate. They already have the market share so only thing they have is downside. If a company such as a Bombtech participates and finishes in the Top 5 the upside could be huge. But like I tell, all the other companies, “If you believe in it enough to put it on shelves you should believe in it enough to compete against who else is on those shelves with you.”

Pretty simple: why make a club if you don’t think it can compete. And when you makes claims like this company in question, you really leave yourself no where to hide when you don’t.

If you actually have 500 readers who bought the Adams sight-unseen, no-testing-attached, I’ve vastly overestimated the judgment of the average MGS reader.

But we’re just going to have to disagree on this one. No matter how many times you say it, believing in one’s product is not the same thing as believing that participating is automatically the best possible business decision.

For Drivers’ test, be interesting to see the drivers hit by a robot at 100mph, all the driver must be off the self, each company using their own stiff shaft ,9.5 degree and hitting a Pro-V1 ball 10 times for example. I think this can be don’t easily and will show some Wow results.
But any test you guys do ,I will be looking forward to see it as always. Me as a HC-4 ,I still use today the Cobra S2 driver winner of a driver test you guys did a few years ago, this driver is probably one of the best kept secrets in golf.

We’ve covered the robot topic. They are invaluable design tools, but when it comes to proving any indication of a golf club will actually perform in human hands, there are some serious issues that make robots much less useful than many believe: http://mygolfspy.com/golf-club-testing-results-you-can-trust/

I’m with you guys Tony. I don’t have a swing that would begin to compare with a robot that hits it on the center of the face at the exact same speed and position every time. I want to see how they perform over a series of shots by a human who’s swing varies every time.

I have a question. I’m wondering… If Driver companies are going to send free clubs to be in the test, how do you know they are not sending you a ‘Hot’ face driver and blow the competition away ?.
In other words, a company can send you a non-comforming driver and win the distance category.

It’s always possible, and you can bet that if anything was unnaturally longer we’d look into it. That said, the risk probably isn’t worth it. If they got caught cheating it would be an absolute PR disaster. Risk far exceeds reward.

Much of what we get is pulled from the same stock as retail, and keep in mind, this stuff is designed to be conforming and shipped directly from Asia. Probably not worth the additional expense of ordering a non-conforming production run.

Can’t provide three drivers for a side by side comparison based on the numbers because of the cost? Providing three drivers would affect the company’s bottom line and have to be passed on to the customers? Baloney. Ain’t buyin’ it. Not for a second. The reviews here aren’t opinion based. They’re data driven. The only REAL reason to make up excuses like that is no confidence in the product to allow a real world comparison based on real world results.

It’s one thing to just say “No thanks” and let people wonder why. It’s entirely another to make up excuses, which is what that is. The excuses removed all doubt as to the real reason. But whatever.

After reading all this banter, especially Sully from Bombtech I checked out the website and think it is well done including the reviews and comparisons with the “best” Drivers on the market and cannot understand why he would not want to include his product. Does he not have the faith in his product he expects customers to have?

This type of testing, or comparison is just what a clubmaker looks forward to, if he has a product that is good enough to compete. Lots of good free publicity for a minor player in the business. I know nothing about Bomtech, and honestly never heard of it, but if it is good it should be entered. The “free Driver issue is laughable because if you can afford to make the product you should be able to provide product to those that can help you.

Just my view and only things I have seen and been through in over 50 years in this great business as a player, designer, and being involved with several manufacturers in the Building of Clubs. Get all the free publicity you can, no excuses.

My thoughts exactly. I find it hard to believe that MGS “threatened” them with negative comments if they didn’t submit a driver. They may have mentioned that their readers always question why certain companies choose not to compete and as an open conversation golf site they want to answer those questions. That isn’t threatening, that is giving them full disclosure. Sounds to me like the driver just doesn’t match up.

      Hi Sully,

I understand coming from a small business it can be hard to justify sending out something without payment. There is no guaranteed return from participating in the review process. However I think purchasing a driver without being able to hit it is just as dumb as not driving a car before buying it.

For me I trust the work and process that MGS puts into their tests and it carries a big weight in choosing to try something new. I’ve been keeping an eye on Bombtech, Krank, Sinister and a couple of the other smaller companies for a while now, but with no unbiased reviews that I could find and not having the ability to hit the club before buying it, that’s all it will ever be. Me keeping an eye on the company and products released without ever purchasing one.

I can’t speak for everyone, but for me the reason I’m so passionate about this issue is that I’m genuinely interested in how the smaller golf companies products perform against the bigger OEM’s. I love playing equipment that isn’t available at every big box store you walk in to.

I do wish your company the best of luck, but I can’t help but think that the exposure you would get from participating in a review like this one would more than offset your cost of 3 clubs to send in. Anyway that just my opinion and either way I wish you the best of luck down the road.

BombTech vs. My Golf Spy….lets play GOLF not War…

I’ll start by saying, I joined the BombTech Army in July 2013 after calling it quits on my R11. The club has been everything that Sully represents it as. The company has been awesome to work with. I sent mine back to get a stiffer flex, it was no problem, Sully wanted to make sure I was happy.

The sound the club makes is so clean – you can clearly feel and hear the difference in the premium materials. The club without a doubt has improved my game. The off center hits (and I have a lot of those) don’t balloon OB, my mistakes are much more playable. When I do hit it sweet… the ball latterly explodes off the hot face… for a 10.5 it feels like a 9… the ball flight it is low and the roll is long. I am longer and more accurate. I couldn’t be happier with the club.

Not to mention… the club looks bad ass and its fun to play with a club that everyone in your round and club house wants to talk about and try! I don’t let them, its my secret weapon! If you want to know what people this about the club follow the facebook feed. People are always sharing their excitement, photos, and videos.

So now that there is a review her eon MGS… I want to say this..I agree with Jeremy… as consumers we really don’t need this squabble to continue…. its BORING and frankly MGS just looks like a bully. I understand MGS has lots of followers and we all want to know more about Bombtech, but its just upsetting you guys decided to rip on this company.

There are plenty of great reviews from quality sites on Bombtechs Grenade Driver. Google them and you can find it… Bottom line, all reviews are more or less the same anyways, how many ways can you review a golf club? You tell us what you like and disliked but bottom line we still have to take it to the course and play the club.

It is unfortunate the MGS didn’t get the chance to review because Bombtech could benefit from the exposure, but based on the way you have called out Bombtech like an upset teenager and the tone your readers often see you attack other companies in the past likely justifies this decision. There are sites other then MGS where consumers can get great info. Disappointing to see the discussion go this way. I’m confident Bombtech will make it with or without MGS….I wish you both took this up privately, but unfortunately MGS took the first swing.

There are a lot of individual reviews on the Bombtech driver but I have never seen any head to head testing done with it. The head to head testing is a lot different than any single review so it would have been nice to see how it compared here.
I like the fact that MGS calls out the companies that refuse to participate. I do commend Bombtech for not making excuses about it and just saying no.
Either way, it will not change my mind about their driver. I have hit it and did not like it. So even if it was included in this testing, and came up #1, I would not buy one.

This sucks for the consumer. It sucks that any website owner thinks they will be able to resolve a participation issue with the insulting tone or manner of approach above. It sucks that this tone is too frequent on MGS. It sucks that Bombtech couldn’t relish the opportunity to compete more than they dislike the tone. It sucks that things appear to have went sideways early on and both sides are only becoming more entrenched in their positions rather than finding common ground for the sake of “consumers” they both clearly care about. It sucks that both products will now suffer; the Most Wanted Driver shootout for being without a piece of equipment to test and Bombtech for not getting the opportunity to show how they stand against the competition.

I would normally suggest that both parties appoint intermediaries to resolve the issue so both products are improved for the consumer but at this point I doubt Sully would believe his product would get a fair shake and I doubt MGS wants to offer the opportunity to be included. I hope I am wrong and you can both have your wives talk in your place so this is resolved in about 5 minutes time.

So in the end consumer loses along with both parties involved.

      Jeremy,

Here’s my perspective (as the guy who heads up the testing). It’s not personal, and I have no personal issue with Sully at all. As I said, I’ve spoken with him. He seemed like a solid guy.

He’s chosen not to participate. Whether he has reasons or excuses…that’s up to the consumer to decide.

This started because last year taught us that when companies choose not to participate, our readers want to know why (essentially the blame – if you want to call it that – was put on us). This year we decided it was better just to spell it all out. For better or worse, I think you’re getting the full picture this time around.

We strive to be transparent, and sometimes transparency can be a little ugly. This is what’s real, and it’s not wholly uncommon when you work against the conventions of the industry. We fight our battles, Sully fights his, and this just happens to be where they intersect. Yeah, this is ugly, but man…if you really want to know why Bombtech isn’t in this year’s driver test, is there any better way?

Again…it’s not personal, and hopefully Sully understands that, and hopefully it’s the same on his end. It’s business, it can be ugly, and sometimes you fight light cats and dogs, sometimes you yell, and cuss, and swear. You throw f-bombs, they throw f-bombs and when you punch the clock for the day it’s done. When the opportunity presents itself you sit down, you have a beer, and you talk about anything but business. You part ways on good terms, but do so knowing it’s invariably going to happen again.

It’s business, and so long as you never let it get personal, in the bigger picture; it’s all good.

The deadline to receive samples hasn’t passed yet. Bombtech still has the option of sending drivers, and everyone interested has my word that they’ll be treated the same as anything else…fairly, with results 100% by the numbers.

Simply not the case Jeremy or Sully.

      Here are the facts:

      1. Bombtech (Sully) requested us to review his driver (3) times. This was just through me, he also spoke with Tony multiple times. In addition to requesting us to review his driver he also requested help with marketing, advertising and distribution of his product.

      2. He sent plenty of FREE product to other golf sites for reviews. So the rationalization that it would raise “your” prices, is well, just that, a rationalization IMO. Here is (6) other golf sites he has sent product to for reviews: http://www.bombtechgolf.com/Professional_Reviews_s/1839.htm

      3. When speaking on the phone with BombTech (Sully) he stated that after speaking with others sites and people in the industry he learned how in-depth our reviews were and replied by saying “Honestly, I’m scared for you to review my driver.”

      4. His slogans which he has many are as follows: “Got Balls” “Pull The Pin”, “Light The Fuse”, “Bomb It Deep”, etc. We simply ask him, the consumer wants to know, “DO you have balls?”

Listen, everyone has the right not to participate, but lets not mislead consumers WHY you chose not to participate. IMO, this comes down to a smart plan, send the driver to other sites that are smaller and less likely to tell the true story about how the product performs. They are less likely to bite the hand that feeds them. We just care about one thing: does your product perform or not. Claims are just that, claims. Performance is all that matters at the end of the day though.

      Ball in Bombtech’s court.

If that’s really true Sully you just alienated 400,000 potential customers that were genuinely interested in how your product performs and stacks up against the competition.

As for the rest of the response you made it sounds like pure malarky to me, MGS is the one site you CAN trust to tell it exactly like it is. Maybe that’s where the hesitation is coming from.

I get that you may not appreciate our direct approach (you wouldn’t be alone). We have our abrasive moments. Based on what I’ve seen from Bombtech, it’s clear you understand that there is benefit in going against the grain and ruffling some feathers as well. We’re not so different.

      “Pull the Pin”
      “Got Balls?”
      “100% Total Destruction”
      “Light the Fuse”
      “No Excuses”

These are your slogans. They’re good ones too (there’s a reason why you have our attention). These slogans are in part how you sell your product to the consumer, and yet when given a pretty damn good opportunity to show how well (presumably) it actually performs against the big boys, you drop a couple of letters from that last one.

      “Excuses”

When it comes to reviews, like us or not, we bust our own asses like nobody in the business. There’s a reason why most major manufacturers, and nearly anyone else we invite to participate (and a few we didn’t) is willing and often eager to work with us. We level the playing field.

You think you’re the only one who doesn’t like us? That line started forming nearly 5 years ago, but it’s never personal.

You have a product. You’ve made claims about that product. We’ve simply asked you (and absolutely we’ve been direct about it), as we ask everyone else, to back up those claims by sending that product in for testing. Anything above and beyond those basic facts is just background noise.

You may trust other sites (call it what it is…friendly guys who told you want you wanted to hear about the Grenade), but because of our dedication and rigorous standards (our testing protocols exceed those of most manufacturers) the consumers trust us…and they do so in substantial numbers.

The decision to not participate is yours to make, and as I’ve personally said, I can respect that. Taking part in a MyGolfSpy review is absolute a risk. Positive reviews are anything but guaranteed, and not everybody has the stomach for that.

At the risk of splitting hairs, as has been stated before, to include Bombtech in our test we would need a single sample in each flex. That’s 3 drivers NOT 6. The 6 you keep throwing around only comes into play for companies who offer pro/tour models, heads in more than a single loft, and multiple stock shaft options.

First let me say…all respect in the world for Sully for his willingness to come here and discuss. He and I have spoken in the past…seems like a good dude. We’ve also been quite impressed with what Bombtech has been able to achieve given it’s relative size in the industry.

With slogans like “Pull the Pin”, and “Got Balls”, he has been bold and brash (even going so far as to call out TaylorMade). In many respects he reminds us a bit of ourselves, but we’re also firm believers that if you’re going to talk the talk…well you know.

It goes without saying that anyone is free not to participate, and we respect those decisions, but we also know that when a small company with a following opts out, you guys always want to know why, and so we tell those stories. Sully has been decent enough to stop by and share his side of things, and I respect that too.

That said, there are a couple of points of contention here.

First and foremost, I abhor the suggestion of “free product”. From start to finish the actual time involved in testing these drivers will be in the ballpark of 40 hours (that’s just guys hitting clubs). From there you can add another 20 or so man hours to crunch the data, write the articles, and create all the graphics.

When that’s done, every product in the test (top, bottom, or middle) will be exposed to our nearly 400,000 readers in a series of at least 3 posts (probably 4 or 5 given that we’ll likely do a behind the scenes post and a Q&A article in addition to the 3 performance articles). Even guys who finished near the bottom last season report being more than satisfied with the exposure and the impact to their bottom line. Considering that it’s an absolute certainty that these driver articles will be the most viewed content we publish this year, playing our request off as something for nothing (the very definition of free) is at best short-sighted, and at worst, wholly ridiculous.

As for “this much free product”. We have a template…let’s call it what it is…a form letter, that we send out when we request product. Among other things, it details the ideal fitting scenario for each of our testers. OEMs are invited to send anything they would like (so long as it’s off the rack) to provide the best fit our guys.

Our invitation also includes this line: “Where multiple stock options are available, or when stock options do not cover all lofts/flexes, we will be happy to make recommendations based on previous experience with our testing team.”

The Bombtech Grenade is available in 1 loft, and 3 flexes. Given that reality, the actual volume of product Bombtech would need to send consists of all of 3 drivers (one each in R, S, and X flex). Sully and I have personally discussed our requirements in the past.

Obviously I don’t have access to Sully’s books, but if you’re honestly telling me that the Bombtech’s costs are so high that providing 3 drivers to a site with the readership of MyGolfSpy is actually going to impact the price that everyone else pays, man…I’ve got a hard time believing that. I would think that the exposure itself would be more than worth whatever your actual costs are.

Any update to on if Krank is participating?

I do enjoy these unbiased club tests versus the medal rankings on other sites.

I really want to see how the new Krank Formula 5 stacks up in areas such as forgiveness.

It’s a forgiving club as well as “Long”. It transfers energy back to the ball better than most.

I’m curious why did Golf Magazine and Golf Digest exclude the Krank products from their reviews. Did they have them and they didn’t make the Monday qualifiers or do they not take Krank products serious?

See Kranks reply. It’s should stand above the crowd.

Absolutely agree. The current ‘Hotlists’ harp on about the new gear, but I suspect that gear hasn’t improved THAT much.

Agreed. Even if you cant get another driver I would even take comparing the numbers for this years winner against the numbvers from the previous year’s winner.

I also think this would be a very good idea. After all, it is how we test clubs ourselves! We game a contender to see if can knock our current champion out of the bag. If a challenger can’t impress us, the old champ stays in the bag. My champ in 2013 was your champ until a late year release (which came after your survey) dethroned it.

I too agree. Love the looks and now that it has an adjustable hosel, I will find one and try it. Hard to find though. However, the mere fact that I’m lured into trying it is a step up.

How about listing them under ‘Reviews’ in the header as you did in the past too (and maybe updating those lists too)? That made the comprehensive reviews much easier to find and read. Just a thought.

If this is independent testing, why even send out an invite to the manufacturer? Why not do a poll of readers to find out the 20 most ‘wanted’ drivers, then test those?

Because if the manufacturer doesn’t give them the equipment to test then they would have to purchase themselves and this site wouldn’t be free any more.

Burnz…probably no persimmon models in this test, but if things go as planned for us, that’s exactly the type of thing we hope to be able to do with regularity in the near future.

You should check out a you tube video. I think it was Rick Shiels he tested a 1997 model Callaway Big Bertha against the Callaway Xhot and after 16yrs of innovation between the two of them, it equaled a total of only 5 yds gained. Funny goes to show how much the golf ball has actually contributed to distance gains.
