SPY PIC: Callaway Big Bertha EPIC Driver

It’s quickly shaping up to be a hell of a week for new club releases, both authorized and less so. Yesterday we showed you the 2017 TaylorMade M1. Cobra Launched it’s F7 Drivers, Fairways, and Hybrids earlier today, and now a photo of Callaway’s 2017 Big Bertha Epic Driver is making the rounds.

As per usual in pre-embargo situations, Callaway isn’t commenting, but here’s what we’ve been able to piece together.

  • Like 2017 M1, the BB Epic appears to make use of a significant amount of carbon fiber in the sole, presumably to offset any extra mass from Jailbreak Technology while freeing up discretionary weight.
  • The usable area of the rear weight track has been reduced on the heel side (likely a limitation stemming from the addition of carbon fiber)
  • The driver features Jailbreak Technology, which we’re told uses two rods to directly connect the crown and the sole (similar to the gravity core in BB Alpha designs). The story will be greater ball speeds within the confines of the USGA limits. You might say it breaks driver technology out of the USGA’s jail. If it works, we’re talking about legitimate breakthrough technology.
  • There will be two models. A higher MOI standard version designed for the majority of golfers will be paired with lower spinning SZ (Sub-Zero) model for aggressive swingers.
  • The RAZR Xtreme neon green color scheme is back. Admit it; you’ve missed it.

Every year the golf companies come up with a new name/gimmick to sell more clubs.Golf drivers have gotten too expensive period. $500 for one club !! Golf costs too much already to play IMO.

I think the green is a bit too Vapor Speed for my liking. I have the BB Fusion (accurate) and the XR16 (long). What would be EPIC would be something with both. Worth a try.

I do like the present Great Big Bertha as it beats even the previous BB ..it even beat the PXG I had.. sold it… look forward to the new one.. Also do like the new Titleist as it is a tick better than the Great Big Bertha..

I just bought the Callaway GBB 6 months ago. What’s it worth now? How can you come up with all this new technology in such a short time and get it into production?

      Seriously ? So I can’t get a fricken
Diablo fusion driver with the stock 44.5
Inch shaft and 15 gram weight in locally to hit before I buy it and they now have a
      NEW driver ?
Hell of a business model they have !

Vic i just bought a 44.5 Fusion last week before this Epic was being talked about. at least you can hit both and make a decision now. so there is a bright side i guess. i love the Fusion though. the local PGA Store only had a demo 44.5 Fusion to hit and only had 45.5’s on the sales floor. the shorter shaft was a way better grouping on the simulator for me and felt great. so i bought the 45.5 and had them make it into a 44.5 and re grip it at the local PGA Store.

I was under the impression that they used a different shaft for the 44.5″ and the 45.5″ clubs.
I had heard that the 44.5″ shaft was about ten grams heavier to accommodate the swingweight.
Wouldn’t be surprised if other aspects were somewhat different as well, such as some torque differences.
Perhaps I misheard, but that’s the impression I got.

Heads up on shortening the Callaway Fusion Driver from 45.5 to 44.5 – the 45.5 model head has a 5 gram sole weight in it from the factory – the 44.5 model head has a 12 gram sole weight from the factory – this is to keep the swing weight of both at D2 (shorter shaft would have lower swing weight unless you add the heavier sole weight).
Various weight shafts can be used and only slightly affect swing weight – torque is most affected by shaft weight – heavier weight = lower torque.

Contact Callaway customer service 800# if you have any other questions.

It is a different line with a different target audience. Would you be mad if Honda released a new accord before you had a chance to buy the new civic? The way people complain without even a basic understanding of the business model being used baffles me. There are 3 lines of drivers:

Fusion/V Series/ Optiforce – Light weight usually best for players with slower swings.

Epic – Premium linexpensive. Normal and low spin version. They deviated from this slight with the 816 and GBB as opposed to the 815 and 815dbd or epic gbb and epic sz.

XR – Midrange, more basic tech or less adjustable than the premium line. Again normal and low spin versions. Lower cost than premium line.

Will be interesting to see the numbers and how the callys compare to the TM driver.. I’d like to see the epic SZ vs the M1 (new M1 that is) both have carbon soles..

Only new since the Razr Fit Xtreme. I would like to think they would keep the crown black and then offer a $1,000 Masters special edition come April cloaked in green.
