Taylormade R11 Irons

When Taylormade released the white R11 driver…it was basically an FU to the entire industry when you think about it.  Taylormade was basically saying to all its competitors…”We’re going to launch something none of you would ever even dream of doing (because of the guaranteed mockery you would get from consumers and the industry) and oh by the way it’s going to be the biggest driver release ever to hit the golf world.”

Hard to imagine now…especially since it has been out and flooding the Tours and flying off retail shelves across the country…but if you go back to before its launch and think about a company like Titleist or Callaway or Ping releasing a white driver you would have probably laughed…and not even given the new driver a chance on the range.  But with the tour presence Taylormade has…they can roll over a new club to all their pro staff in the blink of an eye.  And the sheer numbers of them give you a great probability that you will get a win on tour with one of these new white drivers pretty quickly…which of course influences the consumer all the way down the line…it is a validation (although not a good one) to them that this thing must work.

Well with all that success the R11 driver had…the question I hear quite often since has been will Taylormade release a set of R11 irons?  Well the images below most likley are not be the actual product that gets launched (most likely counterfeits) but for now this probably answers those questions.

UPDATE: We have updated the photos from the first version we gave you.  We could tell the first were most likely counterfeits…way too many red flags.  But we know they wouldn’t be far off and from the looks of these they weren’t.  Here are what more likely will be THE 2012 Taylormade R11 irons!

I talked to a TaylorMade rep and he says they have a 2 year market plan for the R11 irons. Funny, all the negative comments are about the look or color. The 1 positive is from a guy who hit em. I have too and they are awesome. For the rest of you, get the R11’s and a can of white Rust-O-Leum and you’ve got your dream irons.

Tour fit van was here in Michigan and since I play TM except for wedges decided to see what they fit me for. Got their and warmed up and started talking to the guy who is on TV commercials and he is a real nice guy. I told them I wanted to get fitted for CB’s and they set me up and I hit them pretty good but when I hit my r7’s their wasn’t much difference! He then gave me the new r11 iron with graphite shaft stiff 6 iron and I was hitting them about 1 club longer than my 6 iron. IMO no feel and very expensive. I might have to try the Mizuno 800 pro or the titleist AP’s. Disappointed in their iron offerings but their woods can’t be beat!

Agree these are bizarre looking clubs. Seeing lots of that from many big manufacturers – just think Callaway Diablo – ugly!! Hard to know what these designers are thinking. Bottom line is that even if they work, people won’t buy these things.

I travel a lot with my job and never take my clubs because I would hate to lose them because of an airline glitch. So if I play a business round I either borrow a set or arrange something. And thus I have played a lot of different stuff. I have a low handicap so don’t mind swinging easy, taking a extra club on a shot for control. My anecdotal observation is that Blades rule because when hit properly they feel, sound, and perform better. Woods are very subjective but my preference is for more classic shapes like those from Callaway and Titleist. What makes a huge difference is shaft stiffness and kick point. Most borrowed drivers (shafts) I have played are too soft and thus require a more controlled swing speed. My point here is that if Bobby Jones could play with the crap he had in his day (can you imagine an off-center hit with those irons?) we should be able to adapt to what we have today. You must first appeal to what your eyes tell you and then to feel. What I like isn’t as important as what you like. Kinda like women.

TaylorMade way to make an iron look like a Transformer. Those look extremely beefy and not so pleasant. TaylorMade might be the #1 driver in golf, but Scotty Cameron Putters, Vokey wedges, and Pro V1’s are what has been winning tournaments.

I am interested to see how the battle betweent TaylorMade and Titleist is going to unfold in the next few years. You have (TaylorMade) Johnson, Day, Garcia vs (Titleist) McIlroy, Fowler, & Watney. I think Titleist is going to start gaining ground if Rory keeps playing great. If Rickie ever gets a few wins the momentum would be large.

The only reason TaylorMade is the #1 Driver in golf is because they whipped out there check books. I play an R7 425 TP for 2006ish (painted it matte white because i like the idea) and i love it. The R9 wasn’t a bad either. The R11 and Burner 2.0 are about the ugliest drivers i have ever seen. The shape of the head looks like a triangle that is an eye sore to me. Also i don’t think the feel at impact is there with the R11. To me TaylorMade clubs feel hot off the face and I only felt that from the 2.0

So i guess we see all Titleist players using putter off the tee and then wedges into the green do we? The only reason why some of those blokes arent using TM is becasue its now white! Good luck keeping those tour players going forward with the Koreans in charge! There is one brand in golf today that spends more on tour players than any other brand (Acushnet) and the other out performs all others (TM) ??? If we didnt get paid to use ProV than the number one ball would be interesting!

I’ll with hold judgement until after mygolfspy does a test on these. It doesn’t seem like TaylorMade irons are a big seller and like other commenters I think they will be seen at Rock Bottom Golf and EBay shortly. They are really ugly though.

This may be a “chicken or the egg” thing but I believe one must learn to hit the center of the face, period. Using “forgiving” clubs only grooves a bad swing. The tour boys predominantly appear to use blades because when hit properly they perform better. Add to that “feedback” in the form of feel and sound and the club rewards your shot “positively” which is the best type of feedback in sports psychology. Negative feedback works well when touching hot objects but not so much for golf shots.

As a newbie first time poster…. I will stick my neck out and say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as I think these R11’s kinda look cool, although they sort of remind me of a past offerings from Adams. Perhaps not as pretty as the R9’s, but might work better. The red thingie mimics the new forged TM MB/CB’s feature that allows one to adjust the swingweight without messing up the center of gravity and possibly the neutral bias of the club. I am guessing the sole plate that wraps up & back to form the cavity’s backweight could be of a stronger yet heavier alloy to help move that COG down and back and improve launch characteristics as well. I would love to try out these irons just to see how well they work. TM’s website shows some of the R9 clubhead’s hidden technology, like a foam core, and I would be interested to see if there’s anything further TM has cooked up for the R11. I’ll bet TM will also release a TP R11 version that may be more visually appealing to the better players out there.

BTW… I am a 12 hcp aspiring to get better… a lifelong blade user (Spalding, Haig Ultras, Wilson Staff Goosenecks) until I scored a nice used set of TM R7 TP’s last spring for a little more forgiveness, cuz I only play 1x a week, and need all the help I can possibly buy. They are sweet when hit flush, and not so jarring when I inadvertantly hit a chopper! I retired my trusty 40 year old pw and am transitioning to a set of Cleveland CG10’s and a Vokey, but would love to get my paws on a new TM 52 degree with a replaceable face!

Like many older golfers who grew up with the game I went from Sam Snead “Blue Ridge” irons to Wilsons to MacGregors finally winding up with Mizuno’s that I have my umpteenth set of. Feel and visual appeal become more important. There is some nice stuff out there from Titleist and others but for irons Mizuno somewhat sets the style standard in blades anyway. I’ve done the “Demo Days” thing many times and always come back to the feel of a clean forged blade. Learn to hit the sweet spot. Why try to groove a bad swing using an oversized gimmicky club?

doesn’t look like anything new technology wise. Channel back with a wide sole is fairly old design used by several companies. I don’t necessarily agree that they are ugly but there isn’t anything distinct that would knock the socks off of any buyer. Certainly nothing eyecatching like the R11 driver.

Some day no matter what brand it is give some credit where credit due…These guys are leading the market in all catergories dragging along all other brands who sit back and wait for whats new!!! Try them then comment and PS go and hit some more balls on the range so these comments can be validated.

How about this for a suggestion? Soon these clubs will be in retailers all over the country(if they’re not already). Soon as someone scuffs a 6 iron as a demo club, it will go into the demo box to be sold for $10.00 or less- pick it up then, take it to the course and hit it through a round and then see whether or not “pretty is as pretty does”. make sense?

I don’t see anything wrong with the looks of the irons. I would like to see a topline view. I don’t look at teh backs of irons. I don’t look at irons like a woman and see if they are color cordinated or pretty. I am more into how a club looks at address.. The part you actually see.

Sole looks wider than what I like. Looks like it will be a forgiving iron on miss hits. I would give them a try. Heck.. I gave adam’s a try.. I will give this set a try also. I have no brands I don’t like. I try not to limit myself like a lot in here do.

as for the one who said they haven’t seen any TM irons or wedges being played.. May I suggest you open your eyes.. I see several sets of TP irons being palyed. I believe the Darrell Survey had them 2nd to the AP2’s.

I cannot imagine that these are the final product. I do agree that the red weight plate on the back is ugly. Perhaps making that white would correspond to the line of Woods. A set of irons along the concept of the R9’s should be made. That way there is a difference between the CB’s and the R11. Also, these R11 are cast and not forged like the CB’s, so perhaps the look of the club will remain the same, yet just made in a different process and thus $100-$200 less at retail.

I don’t really even see how white heads are all that special. We’ve had nearly white heads with the silver callaway’s and even the real old TaylorMade’s in the past and not so real old TM300 and 200 series… TM also did the copper colored heads (kinda like persimmon), etc. Anyway, These just look like R9TP and the newer line humped. I’ll most likely stick with the R9TP’s, maybe even get a new set so I can finally try my Steelfiber shafts that have been sitting around for too long waiting to be shafted up!

i have seen and physically hit these irons…the PWP is actually red as in ASP R11 driver and the feel of the face is really solid with pentrating ball flight…the best short irons for this target market than all previous TM releases…

Love all the negative comments but take your irons along and try them against these irons…plus watch the global market shares in 3 months after release…numbers dont lie!

I was really hoping for a set of white forged blades, imagine the old Taylor Made Z TP blades with a slick white paint job?! Man that would have been hot. These are kinda ugly, but on the same bloodline as their new MBs so whatever.

While I think a set of irons designed to match the R11 Woods would look really cool, I doubt we’d ever see one. The issue is that the white coating simply wouldn’t hold up against constant ground contact and bag chatter.

They’d look awesome on wall in your local proshop, but two weeks in the bag and you’d probably have serious buyer’s remorse.

Color me surprised. I figured the irons would look as cool as the driver, and boy, am I sorely disappointed. These are terribly hideous. That red weight is awful. I understand why it’s red (to match the red sole plate on the driver), but seriously, that red looks awful next to the finish of the steel. My guess is that these irons were a rush job, or there were too many chefs in the kitchen.

These are pretty terrible. I’m not surprised that TM is releasing an R11 iron, I get tons of questions from customers to the effect of, “I love the R11 driver, where is the matching iron?” I am surprised that these are so bulky, ugly, and SGI looking. Isn’t the R series aimed at the “technician”? Doesn’t that indicate a better player? Moreover, TM has shown that they can make a GI club that looks decent (Burner 2.0), so why not just make something similar and badge it “R11”?

I agree with SB, these irons look horrible and never sell. TM needs to understand that even though a driver sells does not mean that you need to make irons. Even though the R9 irons where great these things look horrible. I would rather get a mixed set of the TM CB and MB irons.

Just a perimeter weight like the new MB irons.

I haven’t seen anyone playing any TM irons in a while aside from the Burner 2.0s. Think about that. Those are gorgeous clubs. It’s no coincidence that the pretty clubs sell, no matter how much better these are. These will sit on shelves like so many of the R series irons did and be under $400 within a few months.

I’d have to agree. Beyond the Burners, and older MB, I just don’t see a lot of TaylorMade irons (or wedges) out on the golf course. Of course, it has to be noted that TaylorMade is absolutely kicking everyone’s ass with drivers and fairway woods right now, and though it’s anecdotal at best, I’m also hearing a lot of interest in their hybrids now too.

My point is that as a company TaylorMade has never been in a better position. If they’re going to try and do something big to win more market share for their irons, now is most definitely the time.
