Top 10 Golf Gadgets Under $50

Top 10 Golf Gadgets Under $50

Not too long ago we sent out an email asking you to identify some of your favorite gadgets. We got some absolutely amazing feedback, and quite frankly, you guys mentioned some things (ok…lots of things) we never would have thought of…and you mentioned the same things again, and again, and again.

This list, compiled based on feedback from our readers, isn’t a list of what’s hot. It’s a list of 10 really cool things you guys say actually work.

Golfshot Classic  App

top-10-gadgets-5

GPS and Scoring Apps were popular choices among our readers, but none more so than Golfshot Classic. The interface is clean and intuitive, stat tracking is reasonably robust, as is the feature set as a whole. Some will point out that the social media and interactivity pieces aren’t as advanced as some of its competitors, while others will ask why your golf gps and scorecard needs to be social at all.

BallZee Ball Cleaner

top-10-gadgets-1

Because not every course has ball washers, and when they do they, sometimes they’re bone dry, or worse, filled with what smells like raw sewage…. several of you told us that the BallZee is one of your favorite accessories. Who the hell are we to argue? Besides, who doesn’t appreciate squeaky clean balls?

“It’s stupid and I got it as a gag gift at Xmas one year, but I love this thing” – Bram

4 Yards More Golf Tees

top-10-gadgets-2

When we did our golf tee test, 4 Yards More came out on top. That’s cool, but what’s equally as impressive is that you guys think 4 Yards More is a must have. Our readers cited durability, consistent tee height and a variety of sizes, as the reasons why they love this particular tee.

Frogger Brush

top-10-gadgets-3

Frogger Brush, Frogger Towel, take your pick as both received multiple mentions from those who replied to our email. While the towel is great, we gave the edge to the brush because of the lower price point, its replaceable brushes, and the built-in groove cleaner. Toss in the retractable cord (and Frogger did), and you’ve got a no-brainer accessory for your bag.

Eyeline Practice T Alignment Rod System

top-10-gadgets-4

Sure, feel free to pick up some run of the mill driveway stakes from Home Depot, we’re not going to fault you for that (not even a little). For our list we chose the Practice T Alignment Rod System from Eyeline golf. We like the added durability, the anchoring system (works with most golf tees), and the crosspiece which keeps the two rods anchored together in an adjustable T-shape . The crosspiece (also available separately) works with Tour Sticks, and those Home Depot grade reflector rods as well.

Sun Mountain Dry Hood

top-10-gadgets-6

The rain hood that comes with your golf bag sucks (they all do, I’ve never seen one that doesn’t). The Sun Mountain Dry Hood is the first. It works with any golf bag, keeps your clubs dry and more importantly easily accessible. It also easily collapses and fits nicely where your old garbage rain cover used to take up space.

iPing Putting App and Cradle

top-10-gadgets-7

PING awesome little free app works like a launch monitor for your putter. It analyzes key aspects of your putting stroke and shows you how consistent (or not so consistent) your putting stroke really is, and will recommend a putter based type of putting stroke you have (straight back-straight through, slight arc, strong arc). While the app is free, the cradle that allows you to easily attach your phone to you putter shaft will set you back about $30.

Tour Striker Smart Ball

top-10-gadgets-8

You guys hammered us with recommendations for several of Martin Chuck’s training products. Sure, we love the Tour Striker Educator, but this list gives us the opportunity to introduce you to the new Smart Ball. The Smart Ball helps keep you connected while eliminating that nasty chicken wing action.  It weighs next to nothing, and because it’s inflatable, the Smart Ball takes up nearly zero space in your bag.

No 3 Putt

top-10-gadgets-9

Does HackGolf have it wrong? Is the answer to making more putts to actually shrink the size of the cup? No 3-Putt fits into a standard golf hole and reduces the size of the hole by 68%. If that’s too daunting, use only the outer ring for a 42% reduction. When you practice with a smaller cup, the real cup will suddenly look a whole lot bigger.

Tour Tempo

top-10-gadgets-10

The final app on our list, Tour Tempo is the only thing we can offer that’s had its science validated by a Yale University study (for whatever that’s worth).  As the name suggest, Tour Tempo (available for iPhone and Android) helps you integrate the same tempo used by Tour Players into your game. Over 100K golfers, including Major Championship winners have used Tour Tempo to improve their games. Why not see if it can improve yours?

2 For the Road

While we didn’t feel right including them in the Top 10, several of you mentioned the sharpie (we like the mini), and the classic ball retriever. So here goes…

Sharpie Mini

top-10-gadgets-11

The Sharpie is almost a gimme. Doesn’t everyone mark their balls with a Sharpie? The Sharpie Mini is available in a wide variety of colors which gives you the freedom to make your mark just about any way you see fit. Toss it in your back, or clip it to the outside with a carabiner. Either way, the simple sharpie is the closest thing to an absolutely must have on this list.

iGotcha Ultimate Ball Retriever

top-10-gadgets-12

While some will be philosophically opposed to the inclusion of a ball retriever (we’re right there with you…almost) several of you argued their merits on the basis of cost savings. Likely the only gadget on this list that will actually pay for itself, the 18′ iGotcha Ultimate extends long enough to reach into (and probably across) most of the hazards you’ll likely need to fish your precious balls out of. We can’t guarantee you won’t pull out a disproportionate amount of TopFlite’s, but it won’t take many ProV1s before you’ve more than broken even.

What about the $2 sheet of white circular ring stickers that are used for protecting the punctured holes in ring binder paper.
If you want to make sense of what I am saying read a book called ” keep your head down damn it”
That sticker will change your golf game for the better, I guarantee it.

Well, most gadgets and training aids are bummers, they are things that work for a while and then get thrown in the Garage. They are great however for the seller cause they make money off this junk.
Ballzee Cleaner, good thing to have
Practice Alignment Rods, Get some small PVC pipe and make one, cost 3 bucks max. Good idea though.
Dry Hood, Good to keep clubs dry in rain. Bags do come with covers also.
No 3 Putt, I like the idea of making the hole smaller, but why have it white, the same color as the cup, why not green so the actually looks smaller.

The absolute best and most simple thing is a weighted club. A heavy club makes you have a good swing by taking you to your strong position and thru the ball to a good finish. Get one, work with it for a time and you will develope a grooved swing. But remember, it takes a while to make the change from a bad swing to a good swing. Great gadget.

      About Ping putting app.
Your stroke is out of wack, I attached the phone to my putter shaft, follow instructions with the app, then i get my putter swing corrected which by the way, was done with the phone attached adding more weight to my swing. Now, im ready to play golf but I removed the phone, You think my swing will be the same now that i dont have the phone weight?
Someone plz make sense of this.
      Thanks

We’ve all seen this elastic contraption before : http://www.callawaytag.com/products/swing-easy but has anyone ever tried one? I got one yesterday at Dick’s for the heck of it and tried it out this morning. All I can say is that it fixed 3 issues I’d been dealing with. Address, take away and proper release. As a struggling low handicapper, I’d of sold my soul to the devil for a new swing. Good thing I didn’t because this $12 elastic aid really does work.

I have to disagree with the inclusion of the Frogger brush. There’s no way to wet your clubs on the course, unless you pour water over them from a water bottle, which is a hassle. Using water makes cleaning clubs easier and more thorough. A better alternative is The Groove Tube, which wets and cleans your clubs. Available from Thegolfersbuddy.com. And at only $5.95, it’s significantly cheaper.

I meant to mention the Rain Wedge when I filled out the survey. I have seen it at a few golf shows and TGW carries it. Works well in heavy rain and wind conditions. $20.00 on their website! I did mention the BallZee. Glad to see it made the list! Thanks!

Well, true confession coming. I noticed as the snow melted that the local mall where my favorite GS shop is located had A LOT of those reflector sticks that make a nice substitute for Tour Stix or whatever they are called. I waited for the snow to entirely melt, and only picked up the ones that had fallen over, unlikely to be salvaged by the mall maintenance company. The security guard that came up behind me did not think this was a constructive, ground maintenance activity on my part, and made me give them back. Off to Home Depot I go! But that little cross brace looks pretty useful to me….on the one featured here!

I offered the Ball washer idea and use the Tee they listed. In fact, still useing same Tee after 16 rounds. Its tough to break and loose. As for the promise of four additional yards…..cannot stablish a reference for it.

I am not ashamed to carry a Ball retriever, with the shear number of water hazards and snakes on our course…..65 has nothing to do with it…..

It wasn’t Adam Scott. It was martin Kaymer using a tennis ball on a string. In my opinion the tennis ball is too small unless you maybe have been a number one player in the world! The smaret ball is a lot more user friendly to a variety to players!

Ive only ever used Golfshot. I keep my scores, prefer a rangefinder for yardage. One thing I pay attention too is stats. If you change something up, stroke or equipment, look at the stats per club change to see if there was in fact any improvements or not. Even for putting, putter changes. No hype about it, it was either worth it or not.

This retriever is really good, but it’s too short. Only the really long ones are worth it. I’m under 55 and have carried a 24ft ball retriever since I was 12. It means I don’t buy balls for the range or for actual play — ever. I play only the unblemished ProV1’s I find, all the others are hit away one time as range balls. How many do I find each year? Well I average about 50 to 75 balls PER ROUND. About 10% of those are ProV1’s. I can’t even hit all the leftover Srixon, Taylormade, Callaway and Nike shags at the range so I probably have about 2000 in the garage.

      Joe Golfer

If you are collecting 50-75 balls per round, you must either have extremely patient people playing behind you, or you are playing a course that very few others play.
I’m not opposed to people using a ball retriever, especially since a good golf ball is quite expensive nowadays. That said, I wouldn’t want to be playing behind anyone who was holding up play be snagging 75 balls per round.

      markb

Clearly, I’m playing at times and on courses where no one is pushing me from behind. No one could grab that many balls on a crowded Saturday morning. But often when I play in ones or twos, I’m stuck behind slower foursomes. When that happens, out comes the retriever and I kill time by hawking balls.

      jeff

must be a lot of happy golfers behind you. sounds like at least a five hour round hawking that many balls
