First Look – Tour Edge’s $600 Exotics XJ1 Driver

Tour Edge’s upcoming Exotics XJ1 Driver was on display recently at the PGA Fashion and Demo Experience in Las Vegas. While the company isn’t releasing specifics in any official capacity, we were able to track down some details about the upcoming release.

For the sake of making this really fun, let’s lead with the gut-punch. The listed price for the Tour Edge Exotics XJ1 Driver is $600.

$600.

Whether that’s MSRP or street remains to be seen, but either way, we’re a long way away from entry level.

Now certainly there’s nothing inherently wrong with premium pricing, but given that this offering is designed for moderate swing speed players it seems a bit odd. That’s basically the bulk of the golfing population, and there’s already a cornucopia of products available for that audience.

How the XJ1 will be received…we’ll have to wait and see.

XJ1 Features

Tour Edge will use the phrase Super Metal to describe the XJ1, and while that alone may elicit some eye rolls, the feature list suggests Tour Edge has invested heavily in materials. And those materials could have legitimate performance implications.

Ti 9-1-1 Body – Tour Edge will make the claim that it’s the first US company to use the material in a driver body. There’s some nuance to that as TaylorMade has used 9-1-1 in its Japanese Gloire driver. While that wasn’t explicitly marketed for the USA, they very often ended up on Dick’s shelves.

As for the material itself, as with most everything else, the benefit is weight savings, specifically 10 grams over the 6AV4 material it used previously.

Amorphous Kevlar-Carbon Crown – Tour Edge is listing the weight at 12 grams which, in addition to offering significant savings over titanium, the would also put the XJ1’s crown among the lightest in golf.

Tour Edge also says that the material is firmer than what it’s used in the past, which helps preserve ball speed on high face contact.

xj1-face

SP700 Beta Ti Face – A thinner, more responsive allow, SP 700 allows for a larger face plate with thinner edges, which helps to maximize COR across a greater percentage of the face.

Stability Bars – Tour Edge took all the weight it saved with the body and crown and put it into a pair of tungsten weights, positioned to increase heel/toe stability.

Fujikura AirSpeeder Shaft – Tour Edge will be the first to offer Fujikura’s ultra-lightweight (45g) Air Speeder shaft as a…actually the stock option.

Specs, Pricing, and Availability

The Tour Edge XJ1 will be available in discrete lofts of 9.5°, 10.5°, and 12°. The stock length is 45.5”. We’re being told to expect a $600 price tag.

As you would expect, a similarly designed fairway will also be released. It will be available in 15°, 16.5°, 18°, and 21° lofts. Suggested retail price for the fairway is $399.99.

I’m a tour edge fan but have never had much love for their drivers. Their 3 woods are unbeatable. It also appears the EX8 series was a flop. Never heard anything positive about that line of clubs. Does anyone have any info on that production run?

Sounds like you need a driver head with more loft. Assuming your current shaft is OK, a good clubfitter could remove your current head and replace it with a higher loft head. He would have you hit test clubs to determine which one is best before the replacement.

The head is important but an upgraded aftermarket shaft is the critical thing. I switched to a Tour Issued Aldila Rogue Black 60 110 MSI and it is a game changer. Spend your $ on a shaft and get a head from a year or 2 ago.

      James Shiffer

Its a combination. You have to start with a high quality head that fits your game but shafts do make the most difference! It doesn’t have to be a $400 shaft either. Go and actually get fitted. You’ll hit longer, straighter shots… and don’t buy in to the hype of “my new driver came stock with a high end shaft” those shafts may share a name with the premium ones but that’s about it…

I’m as big a fan of Tour Edge as anyone and think their Exotics FWs are top notch. Having said that, this appears to be a reach for them in the driver space.

Of course it really comes down to performance….. It will be interesting to see if they can actually push that envelope. Maybe it’s more distance for moderate swing speed players. Maybe it’s less ball speed loss off center. Maybe it’s more FWs hit (though that is kind of hard to expect at 45.5 and ultra-light). We’ll see.

I love me some TE, I play their CB4 4 wood, but this is ridiculous. In my experience, their strength is in their fairway woods and hybrids, so going with a super premium driver is a big stretch. I know they don’t pay tour pros, but are still bagged here and there, but without a big name to push it, I don’t see this taking off.

Good luck w/that TourEdge. That said I’ll ask what is the purpose of this club? Is it a prestige club desinged to help revive interest in the brand that TE is launching w/full knowledge it will be a money loser? TE’s market penetration has never been particularly high but maybe they figured out a way to to be profitable based on the sales projections. Will be interesting to see given that even TE’s fans seem to like the value proposition they represent. They’ll let us know what kind of value that is.

No offense to pxg but their woods can’t touch exotics in the driver market. I do like the pxg irons and wedges but I’ve hit the e8 beta next to the pxg and I felt the exotics was better feeling and was better performing.

But that was for me. As far as results the PXG could surprise people but I just don’t think it’s anything special in the driver market

Brad you must have a heck of a swing, you are the only person of any age I know that has anything good to say about the E8 Driver Line beta or plain. The shafts are mismatched unless you reshaft it. The E9 is better, but still not close to the M1, M2, or Cobra King line. I still hit the TE XCG 6 3-wood longer than any of the other fairway woods I’ve hit, including most of the later TE models. If most golfers are watching the TE E8 line in its entirety is near Nike’s getting out of business prices.
