The biggest problem with facebook vis a vis site is that when you are on facebook and then have to sign on to mygolfspy, you are not always brought back to the mygolfspy page you were on via facebook and have to try to navigate back to where you were. Not always that easy.
Lots of time I have been dumped back onto the mygolfspy homepage and have just given up on either the contest or the issue at hand, especially when using a smartphone…

Marcel V August 27, 2012 at 5:18 am

smart move, u need to have a facebook page to “like” and then enter the contest. Its, actually, a great way to get “likes”

Jon Guertin August 22, 2012 at 9:17 pm

when are we gonna find out who the 10 lucky contestants are? thanks again!

Daniel August 21, 2012 at 1:13 pm

Wow, can’t believe I am at least slightly in the running. Not bad for a guy that just joined facebook to enter this contest. Thanks for the great opportunity guys. It has been a blast so far and here’s hoping I can make it onto the next round. Love this site.

RP Jacobs II August 19, 2012 at 7:47 am

Anthony, the rules have been posted since day one…No surprises…..Though I have an FB account, I barely have ever used it & know even less about it, though the one thing that I deduced, long before this contest was even an idea, is that FB is one huge popularity contest….

So come on…NOW you see it’s “just a popularity contest”….”It’s really not fair?”……”It will come down to who has the most friends”….No sh*t Sherlock…..Let me fill ya in on a little….Not really, cuz anyone with an IQ north of 100 could deduce this, however this who contest is to get MGS exposure…To bring in new readers, members and ultimately more $$…

And to reward you for assisting them, they are giving you the opportunity to win just over $10,000 in prizes, with over 5K of it for you if you win….You just noticed that it was a popularity contest?…There’s also another avenue to the prizes, though I read your entry & between you & I, it’s nothing special, definitely not top 5….

Anthony, you take yourself and your entry a wee bit too seriously…Instead of moaning and whining, how about submitting another entry….And regarding the popularity contest?…Don’t feel so bad, when this contest started, I had four frickin friends…Now I got a reason to bitch and it’s got nothing to do with MGS or this contest….

Grow up & compete like a man and instead of crying and moaning, go find some more friends….lol…..

Fairways & Greens 4ever……..

Anthony Audino August 18, 2012 at 2:28 pm

I entered th contest on Facebook. I took it seriously with ideas that I think would make your site better. I thought things out and took the time to write it and now that it is on Facebook, and now I see it is just a popularity contest. That’s not really fair. I opened the account back up for this contest and now it will come down to has the most “friends”. Not at all fair and definitely not the contest I though it would be. That’s what really SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jon Guertin August 16, 2012 at 9:19 am

i can’t wait till this contest is over so i can stop using facebook again, that is until the next contest.

Dustin August 15, 2012 at 8:10 am

I have a good amount of votes right now but I noticed I forgot to put my Name on the entry. Will my entry not count. I was in such a rush to get entered i just put my email and comment and hit publish.

I love the contest everyone should stop complaining. The only thing that is a problem is it is very cumbersome to vote especially from a phone. But I am showing everyone how to do it so I hope since it takes a little work to vote some people will be turned away and i can get 1st or 2nd. This is a contest I feel I can actually win instead of just a random drawing. Will the second round of voting be different.

Rev Kev August 18, 2012 at 11:20 am

I was able to pick out your entry so I’d thing the MGS guys will be able to as well. Good luck!

TwoSolitudes August 15, 2012 at 3:55 am

Quick question. If you go over 100 by a bit, can you correct it and repost in the comment section with the right number and have that count as the entry? Or do you need to have the whole thing deleted and start over?

I was over on two ideas by 5-15 words or so and re-wrote it to get under 100 words in the comments. Will that be OK?

Mikerio August 15, 2012 at 1:14 am

On a serious note you know what I find quite funny (semi-serious) is that technology has allowed us to become more interconnected and from that we can share information with everyone….though YOU can control the amount you wish to share. If the MGS guys asked you to write a small essay detailing why you should be a worthy winner and send it off to an address in one of their many tax havens you would be livid! Wondering which century they were in. Writing on rocks is the earliest form of facebook…….SHARING INFORMATION! I learnt last night that my wifes cousin was hit by a car whilst cycling, I learnt that a pupil I used to teach now owns a house in Sydney-Australia, I saw a beautiuful image of Mars from the curiosity rover, and I posted an amazing picture of my three year old daughter in her new school uniform for family to see…..all on facebook!
Then we have the sheer audacity and cheek of people to get in touch (via a blog…much like facebook) and complain after the guys have slogged their arses off to provide its readers with a class competition……maybe MGS should just ‘dislike’ these cretinous individuals, who display no manners, in the future!

Peter August 14, 2012 at 7:17 am

Aaaaarggggggggh Facebook!!!!

Oh, wait — I joined in the summer of ’05 when it was **actually limited only to those with an active college email** Oops. Maybe I should complain about how crowded the bandwagon has gotten in the meantime, instead.

Dang. And I could have used a good keyboard rant.

Awesome contest!

Jon Guertin August 14, 2012 at 12:20 am

Its facebook your not signing your life away. I’m glad all you old farts don’t use facebook maybe I can win! Thanks and I hope you have more facebook contests in the future. You guys should be thanking the people who run this website and provide valuable information and these sweet contests. ftw!

Pierre M August 13, 2012 at 9:49 am

No facebook = no contest. :-(

Fleeter August 13, 2012 at 5:09 am

One question… If I live in Canada can I enter this contest?

Ice August 13, 2012 at 6:17 am

Read a little bit, you’ll find the answer.

Fleeter August 13, 2012 at 8:03 am

I click on the contest link to read the rules and of course my firewall (at work) blocks facebook. Good luck to all who enter this!

Sean August 12, 2012 at 4:09 pm

Is there any way to delete entries?

GolfSpy T August 13, 2012 at 6:21 am

We can delete it for you if you’d like.

Ice August 12, 2012 at 11:26 am

There should be a leaderboard on there so people don’t have to scroll through all 18 pages of entries to see who the top vote-getters are.

Jacob Buchanan August 11, 2012 at 7:54 pm

Too bad I can’t sign up for this ridiculous contest (some Scor wedges would be amazing) but I’m definitely looking forward to the next one. Y’all really stepped your game up. Thanks GolfSpy T

Ice August 11, 2012 at 4:01 pm

Question about the prizes: Will TP shafts be available on the woods? Will Adams’ custom shaft offerings be available for the hybos? Will one be able to go get a Mizuno fitting then use those specs when ordering, say if one wanted KBS shafts instead of DG?

Jason August 11, 2012 at 1:22 pm

Thanks for the great prizes. I refuse to use facebook but not mad about the criteria. Honestly its a part of many contests these days for all companies

My only suggestion for future contests would be to let us know up front if facebook or other social media Otherwise we get excited about the prizes and then letdown bc we dont want to participate due to the entry requirements

I’m sure if you let everyone know up front less people would complain less

I’ve learned over the last year that almost all contests use social media so i never get too excited

Thank you for the opportunity and for all the hard work you guys put into this site

Hidden August 11, 2012 at 12:03 pm

Is there any way to delete my own entry?

TwoSolitudes August 11, 2012 at 1:13 am

Some of the reactions to this contest make for interesting reading! My only critic of this would be the voting system which seems a bit arbitrary. You vote for your friends, and not for the post you think has the best ideas. Its also likely that non-golfers (friends and family) will be the deciding votes, which again is not quite right. The extra level with staff votes helps- but if the the goal is really to find the most popular/best IDEA and not just the person with the most FB friends, then the votes will be mostly meaningless.

But its a good attempt! And there will be LOTS of good ideas from it. Just make sure you go through all the entries – whether they have votes or not- so those hidden gems are not missed.

FB just for kids? Is that why the World Bank, the IMF, the United Nations, Chase Manhattan, the EU, the OSCE, SHELL, EXXON, BP, Callaway Golf, Cleveland Golf, TM Golf, Nike Golf, Bridgestone Golf, Adams Golf, Tititlest, Ford, GM, GE, and just about every other global organization and industry have pages on FB? To reach the kids and find dates? Who knew?!

Golfspy Matt August 11, 2012 at 6:53 am

Hahahahahahaha….that last paragraph….made being at work at 9AM on a Saturday a little happier. Thanks.

Mikerio August 11, 2012 at 4:15 pm

I reckon you should write in how far you would go to win the prize….like whose the craziest bastard on this board….it wouldn’t take much cos guys are scared of Facebook……it’d be easy……like I’d piss my pants and wear them to work all day……you know the usual shit….wow got me thinking there….ye I’d shit my pants and wear them to work all day……..T you up for this dude?

Juno August 10, 2012 at 9:57 pm

I’m not going to win this. :( but I’m happy for the guy that does. This prize is pretty amazing.

Outsider August 10, 2012 at 7:31 pm

I don’t usually frequest this site at all, in fact I’m an avid reader and member on another site. But I cannot believe some of the comments. Hey listen, MGS is putting up a contest where you can win thousands of dollars in prizes and people are pissed about facebook/alienation? I’m sorry but not everyone can win and not everyone is part of everything. That’s life. It seems to me the more someone has to add creativity to a contest, the more they find some reason to complain. It never fails.

tunafishdocs August 10, 2012 at 8:32 pm

I completely agree. I could have overlooked it, but last time I checked this contest was FREE. Do you go to a fine dining restaurant and then complain to the general manager about the price of the entrees? Do you go to a bar and then complain to the bartender about the cost of the drinks? I hope not. If you don’t like the prices of the entrees/drinks you have the option to get up from your table and leave the establishment. FB is a part of the contest, so deal with it. I personally deactivated my FB account and will not enter the contest, but it doesn’t mean that I’m gonna cry like a little baby. I’ve got more important things to worry about than me not having a chance at winning a contest because I don’t have a FB account. MGS, I enjoy your site and appreciate your insight and reviews. Keep up the good work. I won’t be entering the contest, but I’ll be back here everyday to catch the latest reviews and new releases.

Gilles Boudreau August 10, 2012 at 2:17 pm

I think I entered the contest but not sure. How do I know?

Ice August 13, 2012 at 3:20 pm

Hit vote now then click ‘mine’ and it should show your entry.

Peter Ciambrone August 10, 2012 at 12:04 pm

I noticed a lot of guys have not read though the rules, it clearly states to keep your comment to 100 words or less, I am guessing those entries will be disqualified?

Justin August 10, 2012 at 12:37 pm

I found it difficult to locate the rules for this contact. Perhaps you could provide a link?

Justin August 10, 2012 at 1:02 pm

and by contact I mean contest

DMann August 10, 2012 at 4:12 pm

I got in there @ 89

Ice August 11, 2012 at 4:36 pm

I had 69 :)

Msp1404 August 10, 2012 at 5:23 pm

I agree, if it is not 100 words or less they should be dq’d. We all have to follow the same rules no exceptions

And not relevant to this topic but have to throw it in.
Yay for mygolfspy and yay for Facebook

Ice August 12, 2012 at 6:30 pm

Finding myself in the top 5 as long as the entry with over 100 words in dq’d, I agree with you!

Justin August 10, 2012 at 10:22 am

Just a question, because I didnt see it posted anywhere, but is this contest only eligible to those residing in America? I live in Canada and wanted to know if I was still eligible to enter. Thanks!!

mygolfspy August 10, 2012 at 11:02 am

This contest is open to everyone 😉

DMann August 10, 2012 at 9:32 am

Rules about voting are a little confusing and I know you’ve tried to explain this already, but….. If someone has voted for your submission yesterday can they return today and re-vote for your same the entry? and the return tomorrow vote and so on?

GolfSpy T August 10, 2012 at 9:39 am

Correct. The database is on a 24 hour timer. So if you or one of your friends vote for your entry at 10:23 AM, you’ll be able to vote for the same entry again tomorrow (after 10:23 AM). And so on for the day after that…and the day after that.

DMann August 10, 2012 at 9:44 am

Thanks. Your contest rocks

Masta August 10, 2012 at 8:52 am

Absolutely shocked by all the Facebook comments. 99.9% of the people around me use Facebook(I am 30). Lighten up people. If you are afraid of being watched, maybe you shouldn’t even be using the Internet. And what does an overpriced IPO have to do with you? What a joke.

Nevin August 10, 2012 at 7:01 am

I am baffled by all the hysteria about Facebook. My family uses it all the time to stay in touch. Very over the top, especially for a free contest.

John Barry August 10, 2012 at 6:44 am

Thanks guys for all the hard work and the contest!

Don Thorne August 10, 2012 at 6:35 am

When you went out for donations I contributed and got the T-shirt. Then all of a sudden Harrison is all over the front page. I can understand what it takes to continue your effort and I truly enjoy your website 90% of the time. Other times I’m not sure what’s up. I’m disappointed with the FB condition but would not have entered any way as my bag is set. Beside, if any thing I won was white I would give it away.
I will continue to enjoy the website and reviews, and look forward to the future when not required to join a overpriced IPO. I’m of old school, if I want to talk to someone I call or visit, I don’t need to know everything about everyone. Social media is not my thing, I know who my friends are and don’t need everyone else monitoring.

mygolfspy August 10, 2012 at 6:48 am

I appreciate every dollar our readers contributed in regards to donations…trust me. Although Don, you tell me…will $2,000 run a business without accepting sponsors? Because that is what we received over the past 12 months in donations….$2,000. You guys including yourself have no clue what goes on behind the scenes here and if you did you would never complain. Once again you tell me who do you know that would turn down over $250,000 in income to try and keep this place the way it has always been. Maybe when we go away for good because of opinions like your own…you will realize how much we were really dedicated to you and not the other side like all the others are.

blstrong (SeeRed) August 10, 2012 at 9:33 am

$2,000?! Man…that is sad. I guess most people really do want something for nothing.

Mikerio August 10, 2012 at 7:26 am

What… overpriced IPO?…….do you buy goods from overpriced walmart?…do you buy overpriced cars?… you get ripped off with insurance?…….do you buy overpriced golf clubs that cost buttons to make?……do you use overpriced internet to look at your supoosed sell-out MGS?……talk out hypocritical. We all sell out and buy into companies that are ripping us off everyday… an i phone buddy?… you use two tin cans and string i guess!

lexkel August 10, 2012 at 6:33 am

Wow, great competition. Love it. Amazing stuff.
Can i win if i live in Australia? Can’t find any terms and conditions anywhere.
Can’t believe how unthankful some of the commenters are here, rather sad.

skihippy August 10, 2012 at 6:07 am

Guys really I can’t believe how many of you supposed men sound like children. Boys I won’t be able to enter either but this site brings us so much more than that. How about we be thankful for MGS even thinking about us…. and doing this contest at all..

Mikerio August 10, 2012 at 2:39 am

WOW……T I betcha didnt see this coming eh. Quite a debacle. I have planned many event for people to piss on it…..quite disconcerting. Well lesson learnt….next time you have to take into account the fox news watching, conspiracy theorists, Tea party lovin, guys called Mitt who hate the mighty Zuck. Cos if they take part in this competition they may get brain washed by a liberal and turned into a married gay zombie who wants socialized medicine with the help of that Obama fella…ooohhhh and satan! Damn you MGS for asking people to a little for a lot….you have opened up the bowls of hell T!

Anyway I wont be taking part in this competition because I quite literally cant be arsed…. and yes I do have a facebook account and I am not a gay married zombie.

T if I piss off at least ten people can i have an adams hybrid…..?

Drew August 10, 2012 at 8:58 pm

You’re ASS-uming that folks who dislike FB are all conservative. Wrong.

Mikerio August 11, 2012 at 4:08 pm

Er…’s pretty conservative to be afraid of a social media website……and from my many visits to America I am astounded by the conspiracies and general paranoia that everyday folk feel but then you watch fox news….and you kinda get a good inclination of the source of that fear……you guys gotta ban that stuff………ASSuming your American? Your not Canadian right?

stevenhw8 August 9, 2012 at 11:53 pm

Maybe I should call the waaahhhmbulance

Drew August 9, 2012 at 9:44 pm

Dont use FB…won’t be entering. End of story.

ps. I loathe FB!

Mastaj August 9, 2012 at 7:15 pm

These days people want to have everything handed to them and give up nothing. MGS is giving out free stuff! I don’t understand why some people sound like they got robbed.

Good work MGS, I will continue to support you!

Scratch August 9, 2012 at 5:39 pm

Yep another VIP member and supporter not able to enter contest. Hate everything about facebook!

bullwinkle August 9, 2012 at 4:45 pm

It is interesting that everyone is complaining about facebook just as they notified me my Facebook account was hacked from China. I follow a lot of Golf on Facebook, Taylor Made, Ping, Golfsmith, Edwin Watts and others have Facebook tie-ins. I do think after this contest I’ll pull the plug on my facebook account, I’m not sure how far these hackers can backtrace me or my computer through Facebook which has as many holes as swiss cheese in their security.

mybluc4 August 9, 2012 at 4:14 pm

Guys, this is getting nuts already. No one is bitching about the contest…it’s great, Spy is great.
With regard to the contest, it is what it is. You want to enter, you need to go on Facebook.
I don’t like, want or trust being on Facebook, so I’m out. Best of luck to everyone who enters.
Nuff said.

Trebuchet August 9, 2012 at 2:31 pm

I’ve been rolling around the internet for a lot of years, started out on compuserve for my C64. I’ve spent a lot if time on newsgroups, list-serves and IRC channels. (Comes with the job)

I’ve always been impressed with the lack of trolling in the MGS forums, it’s very rare in a public forum. But apparently they just lurk here, and only come out when there’s free stuff to be had.

Great Job on the contest T – Don’t feed the trolls, and don’t let them diminish your passion for the game, or for the unique service that you provide. Your efforts and candor are much appreciated by the majority of us!

JBones August 9, 2012 at 2:34 pm

Thank you for posting that so eloquently; I’ve just wanted to get on here all day and tell all the whiners to “F off”.

Mikerio August 10, 2012 at 4:56 am

I wouldn’t label these guys trolls….i would always think of a troll as someone who would target someone with a specific extreme comment to get a rise out of their audience….an attention seeker…a pussy who hides behind his/her laptop. No these guys are just acting quite juvinile and whining about all the bad stuff that facebook might do to them if they sign up…..oooohhhhh got a computer dude…..yeh your open to getting hacked, traced the lot buddy. Got a smart phone….bingo…the same. Chill out…..but they are watching you!
Jim Carrey once observed that if you watch the news its really quite depressing…..then one day he looked behind the tv and saw his garden and saw that the world wasnt such a bad place. Yeh I know he lives in a mansion but you get the point………so dive in and sign up to facebook…………I dare ye!

Steve Pitts August 9, 2012 at 1:23 pm

I also do not have a Facebook account. I can’t believe there is not an alternative method of entry. This is exclusionary and counter-productive to building a loyal membership base.

Ice August 9, 2012 at 1:12 pm

I’m not really a fan of the “voting” thing. It becomes more of a popularity thing. Even if one had the best entry but only 50 facebook friends, how could they possible beat one with say 1500 friends?

mygolfspy August 9, 2012 at 1:22 pm

If you read the contest info on Facebook you will notice that we accounted for that Ice…(5) our chosen because of total votes and (5) are MGS Staff picks. This way you could in theory have 0 votes and still make it to the next round.

Ice August 9, 2012 at 1:24 pm

I understand. It still excludes some from the grand prize if they can’t gather the votes. Enough of my ranting. This is the best contest I’ve ever seen. Seriously.

mygolfspy August 9, 2012 at 1:28 pm

Can’t please everyone, definitely learned that today Ice 😉 Will make you not want to run contests anymore that is for sure.

Ice August 9, 2012 at 1:33 pm

Unless you make a “contest” where everyone who wants one gets a staff bag full of top gear then you’ll always have complainers.

Dan August 9, 2012 at 1:12 pm

it seems like I am not the only one who wants to know why you need a facebook account to enter, I am in the process of having my account deleted, I am fed up with their BS, so with this in mind, I will not enter your contest.

Nate August 9, 2012 at 1:09 pm

As for the contest, I’ll enter happily. As for Scott, I really don’t understand how he could be offended by such a cordial response (at least the first two times) that the admins took time out of their day to respond to. Others have expressed their disappointment in less childish ways, and I really hope you are not this immature in person. If not, you really need to stop trolling as I believe you have expressed your discontent thoroughly enough. Not everything can be all roses and daisies, and you should know that.

RoverRick August 9, 2012 at 12:34 pm

I have a facebook account, and I “liked” but for some reason it looks like the bottom of the page is cut off and when I click enter now it gives me 5 steps to do but does not tell me where to enter my less than 100 word entry.

GolfSpy T August 9, 2012 at 12:38 pm

On the “Enter Now” screen you should see a mostly filled out form. You’ll need to enter your email address as well, and then fill in the box that says “tell us why we suck and how we can improve MyGolfSpy”

Stephen H August 9, 2012 at 12:03 pm

Interesting on the hate for fb…Better chance for me then!

finalist August 9, 2012 at 11:19 am

Watch out for FB… They don’t allow contests for some dumb reason. They could end up canning it.

GolfSpy T August 9, 2012 at 11:22 am

Facebook’s deal is that contests can’t be hosted on their servers. You have to go through a 3rd party. Splitting hairs when you think about, the entire thing is 100% Facebook integrated, but technically speaking, is hosted off the Facebook network.

We’re 100% by the rules, but again…it’s just weird.

finalist August 9, 2012 at 11:22 am

I helped a little with a major health admin company’s FB page and the small print on FB said they couldn’t hold a contest. The company’s lawyers immediately canned it specifically because of FB’s fine print regarding contests.

BUT I see FB contests all the time so you’re probably fine.

mudfish August 9, 2012 at 10:49 am

I commented earlier and figured I would come back to excitement and praise… boy am I disappointed…

Again, great contest, great prizes and great execution. I understand that people think it is a popularity contest, but that only comprises 1/2 of the entrants… For those complaining about having poor writing skills, sit down for a while and think long and hard before you enter. Quality does not come naturally for some, but it will come with time to others.

Thank you …

RP Jacobs II August 10, 2012 at 12:06 pm

Great post MF!….Exactly what he said!!…

Fairways & Greens 4ever……

JBones August 9, 2012 at 10:26 am

Wow, this is ridiculous. T, you a a much bigger man than I, for one taking the time to respond to the WHINERS and two for responding in a cordial manner.

Scott August 9, 2012 at 10:22 am

Hey Mygolfspy, Golf is a gentlemen’s game. Be GENTLEMEN, just saying!

ms1195 August 9, 2012 at 10:14 am

I’m sure this is exactly the response you guys were expecting….It is unbelievable to me that people are actually complaining about this contest!?!? Seems most of the facebook complainers are either conspiracy theorists or lazy and would rather just be handed the prize rather than have to put effort into winning it. I feel bad about this, because you guys obviously put a lot of time and effort into organizing the contest. I hope the positive feedback outweighs the negative, but geez, this must be like dealing with a bunch of spoiled middle school children.

mybluc4 August 9, 2012 at 10:50 am

No one is complaining about the contest, just the requirement of Facebook.

ms1195 August 9, 2012 at 10:53 am

Seems the requirement of facebook is part of the contest.

RP Jacobs II August 10, 2012 at 12:04 pm

+1….Thank you MS, you said it better than I….

Good post!……

Fairwasy & Greens 4ever…..

jromes August 9, 2012 at 9:55 am

Yup just like government programs (which voted itself the authority to invade all aspects of your fb without you being aware and incriminate you on its context thereof) when you hold your hand out for free stuff you don’t get to complain. So just don’t enter the contest. Everyone else that uses fb just go ahead and enter the contest and return to using fb for what its really used for by all the “adults” on here…looking at pictures of young girls you shouldn’t be.

GolfSpy T August 9, 2012 at 9:56 am

I swear to god, if this was an actual contest entry, I’d vote for it myself. It’s positively brilliant…at least that last part.

blstrong (SeeRed) August 9, 2012 at 10:04 am

Ah, not true sir. As active participants of this site we have the right, even the obligation to complain. Perhaps one of the reasons some of us do not have FB accounts is to remove the temptation of your last sentence. Not me of course…

RP Jacobs II August 10, 2012 at 11:55 am

Of course….LOL….

Fairwasy & Greens 4ever…….

jmiller065 August 9, 2012 at 1:17 pm

Maybe you need to pull your head out of your own ass. The generalization that all “adults” use social media to look at young girls is ridicules. Do you have sick S.O.B. out their that do sure that’s what the privacy settings are for in locking down your profile from public view, don’t put a profile picture of yourself on their and don’t accept people as friends that you don’t know, really damn simple if you ask me to avoid that kind of behavior from a users stand point.

As long as the user makes their profile friends only, doesn’t post a profile picture or header image of themselves that are public and doesn’t accept anyone as a friend that they don’t actually know in real life they have less sensitive information into FB then you do on any site which you have made a financial transaction of any kind. Besides, most of your information is already public record in the first place that I can go down to the local library / archives and find out about it has been that way for YEARS now.

If you are so against social media in general, what are you doing using the platform that supports the websites in the first place. People when the internet first came out thought it was the devil and was going to corrupt today’s youth. No it helped provide more knowledge to today’s youth. Some now think the new devil is social media, that is just people that don’t understand it and don’t take the time to understand it. When people don’t know anything about an issue / topic they get defensive and jump to conclusions, The better way of approach is education on the issue / topic and then come to a informed conclusion.

Like I said once before, I work as a web applications developer. The company I work for their product targets High School students and College Students. One extremely effective way to connect with these young “adults” and teenagers is using social media. They want blogs, social media streamed into the website, links to the social media pages. If you like it or not social media is not going anywhere it is mainstream now, sort of like the internet in general.

I just suggest that if you are that paranoid about your personal information don’t have a computer and don’t use the internet at all. It is that simple, change with the times and what the current trend is or get left behind in the dust with the third world countries.

blstrong (SeeRed) August 9, 2012 at 2:07 pm

Yikes. Either someone touched a nerve or you have taken at least one person a little too literally.

RP Jacobs II August 10, 2012 at 12:02 pm

No, I don’t think either….Just how would you take the negative posts on this thread?….Figuratively?…Please….SR, you speak of “being an active participant & contributor” and I’m pretty much a regular on MGS and other than this thread, I’ve never seen your “contributions” so I’m assuming that you have “contributed” to MGS by way of a donation…Have you donated to MGS?….

Fairwasy & Greens 4ever……

blstrong (SeeRed) August 10, 2012 at 12:33 pm

Had I not brought it up in the first place, I would respond that whether or not I have donated is none of your flipping business. However, I did and the answer is yes. I feel kind of silly for even addressing this, but just because you have not seen anything I may have written on this site is no reason to assume that I have not “contributed” on other threads. Really RP? From what I have read of yours elsewhere on this site you should be above that nonsense.

And my response to JM was in reference to his people needing to pull their heads out. This has been a polarizing thread, but please.

RP Jacobs II August 10, 2012 at 2:09 pm

SR, you’re right…Though you did bring up “contributions,” I went after the messenger iinsted of the message….My apologies for this….It just bothers me, and I’m not directing this at you however I’m seeing people who have never really participated on this site, and obviously they have not made a donation, yet you would think that MGS was trying to take their first born……

Anyway, I hope that you have a good season……

The Best……

robbo August 9, 2012 at 9:50 am

Facebook account?—uh, no. Sorry i won’t enter.

Golfer Ryan August 9, 2012 at 9:38 am

I commend you GolfSpyT for finding an effective solution to what could be a very complex and demanding problem. People complaining about Facebook need to understand they are trying to get something for free and understand the man power and effort that has already gone in to this project. If you don’t like Facebook, please complain on Facebook. What if GolfSpy allowed you to enter by posting on the blog, and they accidentally miss your post? What if you post multiple times as is allowed and MyGolfSpy misses those posts? Are you going to still complain and say it is not fair since they missed your post? Think about the efforts these guys are putting in to put this together, and be thankful. And if you claim to be a grown-up not using Facebook, then please GROW UP!

blstrong (SeeRed) August 9, 2012 at 9:21 am

I may have failed to mention this in one of my (too many) other comments, but thank you to the MGS staff for expending the tremendous effort it undoubtedly took to bring together one of the best golf prize packages I have ever seen. Even though I will not be participating, I do mean this sincerely. And good luck to those who are in! Those of us who eschew at least the FB form of social media will get over it and look forward to your next great review, article, giveaway, etc.

Andy Greenwald August 9, 2012 at 9:44 am

Well Said. I am in the same boat as you. I refuse to join Facebook for a number of reasons.

I too understand the MGS reasons, but clearly MGS knew there would be some lost people, but chose not to even communicate that aspect before the contest (which may have been the only mistake in this from my standpoint).

So be it. Enjoy the contest, i wish everyone the best. I will keep returning for the material posted here by MGS and the members.

stevenhw8 August 9, 2012 at 10:01 am

Respect to you 2!
A lot of people bitching, but you guys can stand by your point of view in a polite and mature manner.

RP Jacobs II August 10, 2012 at 4:35 pm

SR, class post from both you and Andy…Hopefully some of these other people will follow your lead and at least look at the whole picture….

Considering that I have all of 4-5 FB friends, it’s gonna take more than luck, it’s going to take an act of God….

The Best……

jmiller065 August 9, 2012 at 8:55 am

I think any comments about social media in terms of “grown ups” not using it are completely misinformed or you are just living under a rock. I happen to be an adult and use social media as a way of communication. My grandparents that are 60-70s use social media, are you really going to sit here and tell me they are not “grown ups”? Only time I might use the term “grown ups” is when talking to a child, it sounds like you are a child talking to other adults or attempting to insult someone’s intelligence.

Social media has become the primary way for the younger generation to communicate. Universities have started to lean to social media heavily as a way to promote events and get information out to their students and potential students. It is what they are resigned to doing because it is the current trend there is not an option to refuse using it meaning the employees of the university better have a good handle on what it’s all about.

Social media offers different levels of privacy, Facebook especially will allow you to lock the profile to friends only and you can fine tune even what your friends see by adding people to a group and setting content filters. I have a group called “Professionals” and i place majority of the people I work with in that group with it limiting the content that is posted and no images that I have on my profile other then my profile images that have to be public.

If you don’t like the fact that social media is the trend for the youth and a very affordable way to have a custom application through FB interface, don’t complain about how the contest is run if you want a chance at $5,400 grand prize, I’m okay with you not entering thanks to social media it means one less person I have to beat out in this contest.

I can relate to the budget thing, I happen to be a professional web applications developer. I know that when I do “consulting” / “freelance” development outside of work my price tag is anywhere from $25 to $100 an hour, which is actually on the low side of “consulting” / “freelance” development for software. It really gets based on the labor hours and skill sets that have to go into the project as to what you are going to pay for it.

Keep up the great work MGS, you absolutely do not have to justify your logic to anyone that fact that you attempted is more then enough in my book. Lets be honest FB is not just social media anymore, it has become a platform / interface for small businesses to get solutions ou to people in an affordable manner, probably one of the reasons I am not working freelance development.

Trebuchet August 9, 2012 at 9:02 am

I came to say exactly this.

stevenhw8 August 9, 2012 at 9:08 am

Well said, jmiller.
I’m 28 and my parents beyond their 50’s use Facebook to keep in touch with the rest of the family.
I’m sure they’ll be happy to know that someone called them “juvenile” 😛

blstrong (SeeRed) August 9, 2012 at 9:25 am

I only disagree in that I do believe the MGS staff have some responsibility to discuss the reasons for requiring this type of outside subscription for one of their contests with their readership. Perhaps not the gory details, but some idea of the logic behind it, which T has already done.

Rev Kev August 14, 2012 at 5:50 am

Great comment JMiller – I’m one of those 50 somethinger’s that uses facebook – I do it to keep touch with college aged members of my congregation and also friends that are spread around the world.

I wish I could get my mother plugged in so that she could receive pictures of her great grandchildren. Social media is a great tool.

Kudos to MyGolfSpy for using it.

stevenhw8 August 9, 2012 at 8:52 am

Awesome, MGS!
Thanks for setting up such an amazing contest… w00t w00t!

Just a question…
Under the rules it says: 5. Limit One Entry and One Vote Per Person, Per Day.
Does that mean you get to vote every day? Or is it 1 vote per Facebook account?

GolfSpy T August 9, 2012 at 8:58 am

You can, at your discretion submit a new entry each day. You are also able to vote 1 time (total, not per entry) per day for the duration of the contest.

Scott August 9, 2012 at 8:49 am

I come to your site for the golf industry news not for the giveaways. By requiring people to go to Facebook, you and your advertisers are able to track users in a more efficient way which I understand but am against. No signup here and see ya Mygolfspy. Your website has the right to put on a contest anyway you see fit and I also have the right to go elsewhere- Which I will do.

GolfSpy T August 9, 2012 at 8:56 am

Just an FYI for those who would otherwise believe everything they read, Facebook only makes available to us whatever information you choose to make available publicly. This does not give us a magical backdoor to your private information.

Additionally, NOTHING is being shared with our sponsors. We are providing them banners, links, and publicity. We are not sharing any other information, including your email addresses.

blstrong (SeeRed) August 9, 2012 at 9:11 am

Hopefully not many if any of your readers believes that this is how MGS would operate.

Scott August 9, 2012 at 9:14 am

By the way I don’t believe everything I read and I take it as an insult in your reply to my comment. Some of your comments to certain posters are unprofessional and childish. I would hope that is not the direction of your website.

GolfSpy T August 9, 2012 at 9:19 am

Scott – I think I’ve been as polite is warranted given the amount of people irate about having to use Facebook to get something for nothing.

Regarding my initial reply to your comment – you basically suggested that we are somehow using this contest to “track users” (grow our following, yes…’track’ not so much), and that our advertisers would have access to that same info.

Both insinuations are patently false, which is why I wanted to make sure other readers (and participants) understand as much.

Scott August 9, 2012 at 9:35 am

To Golfspy T- Wow, you insult me again, just amazing. ( “Track”- not so much) Your comment needs no explanation. Your PR needs a little refining.

mygolfspy August 9, 2012 at 11:42 am

I am the owner of MGS, and PR (which means BS, lying, stretching the truth, covering up, etc most times) is not what we are about. However if you are looking for honesty, truth, and being a stand-up no bullshit kinda guy we are your site. Unfortunately this old-fashioned way of doing things has been replaced with BS PR and media.

So if what you want is for us to lie to you to make you happy I can, but I would rather tell the truth and if you don’t like it I am sure you can find someone else to blow smoke up your ass. Just not gonna be on MGS.

Here is the TRUTH – none of our advertisers or us are secretly tracking your movements. This contest was done because we thought you guys would like it, and looks like a lot of people already are doing just that. And that Facebook aspect of it came in to save us a couple thousand dollars. And make it much easier to manage. Those are the facts. And who says that readers can insult us and we can’t give our opinion back? You are too used to being told the customer is always right type statement. I don’t get down like that Scott. If you insult what I have worked hard on and I think you have a leg to stand on…I will be the first to admit it…but when you don’t…once again I will be the first to say so.

Scott August 9, 2012 at 12:20 pm

I did not insult you or your work. You obviously read a lot more into my comments than what I truly wrote down. Everything I said was fact- I now see steam rising off the pile of your ego!

blstrong (SeeRed) August 9, 2012 at 12:50 pm

I and probably others admire your efforts here, but I think you are trying to reason with what might be considered a lost cause.

Scott August 9, 2012 at 12:52 pm

Very sad, I am in a private equity firm here in Florida and came to your website first as a golfer to get industry news from a different angle. While here I also did research for possible investment and future strategy in other related fields. Thanks for the heads up- I have all the research i need now. Mygolfspy your attitude and disrepect is beyond reproach . You are your own worst enemy. Once again thanks.

blstrong (SeeRed) August 9, 2012 at 12:53 pm

That last comment was directed at MGS, btw.

GolfSpy T August 9, 2012 at 1:05 pm

Scott what you originally said was “By requiring people to go to Facebook, you and your advertisers are able to track users in a more efficient way”.

All I said in my reply is that you are misinformed insomuch as Facebook does not allow us to track anything, nor will we be sharing any info (the only actual info we’re collecting is email addresses) with our sponsors.

Everything else is you taking offense, I presume, at being told your original statement was incorrect (which it was).

I meant no offense, and it’s too bad you’ve taken it that way, but it’s really time to put this aspect of the thread to bed, and focus on the readers who are interested in participating in the contest, or at least voicing their objections to the Facebook component.

Scott August 9, 2012 at 1:26 pm

SO nobodys tracking anything ! Now thats BS. Not very tech savvy or very gullible! Thanks for the apology by the way .

RP Jacobs II August 10, 2012 at 10:31 am

Scott, I run a private equity firm, as Principal & Managing Partner, in Pgh and also one in Chicago…Your passive, veiled comment leaving it out there that that you were looking for possible investment vehicles for your firm reaks of an amateur & an employee playing on his firm’s computer and not a professional or principal/partner doing legitimate research, because there is nothing regarding this thread or these posts or this contest that would give you enough information, on which to base a decision, either negative or positive…

Just glad that you’re some else’s liability…LOL….

Have a good one…..

Fairways & Greens 4ever…….

Msp1404 August 9, 2012 at 8:40 am

unfortunatly this contest is not for everyone, there are plenty of contests on here for the non FB users. But these guys are giving away $10k worth of stuff, suck it up make a fake account. I would reopen my myspace account if they put it on there, just to get those awsome prizes.

Skihippy August 9, 2012 at 8:40 am

Look the only reason that I am dis-appointed about Facebook is because in my position as a single father with a worthless X. Putting myself out there on Facebook is just asking for problems. But thats my problem, I will always still love MGS!!!! And thanks for the Contests

mybluc4 August 9, 2012 at 8:38 am

No beef with the contest…it’s pretty amazing. Understand the budget constraints…that’s part of the business.
Don’t hate Facebook, just don’t use it, don’t trust it and cannot find a value in subscribing to it to enter a contest. I’m a loyal Spy fan and will remain so. Facebook just ain’t in the cards…and ain’t gonna be!
“With nearly a billion people on Facebook, I don’t think it’s a stretch to assume a few are grownups.” was not a convincing nor relevant response in context of your membership’s response to the facebook requirement.

Golfer Burnz August 9, 2012 at 11:45 am

My feelings exactly, mybluc4. I’m still a MyGolfSpy fan regardless. I’m skeptical of Facebook and don’t plan on joining just because it is free. My disappointment was also in the “no mention” of the Facebook requirement in the buildup. It is still an amazing contest for those that qualify and I’ll still come back to MyGolfSpy on a regular basis and even enter more contests in the future that are “Facebook Free”.

I can also appreciate the budget constraints of the GolfSpys, just hope they can understand where some of us are coming from.

CODY August 9, 2012 at 8:38 am

Brian August 9, 2012 at 9:17 am

Just an FYI…it’s the 21st Century.

CODY August 9, 2012 at 9:35 am

hahaha yeah thats what i meant i guess i need to do some catching up my self haha!!

Brian August 9, 2012 at 8:23 am

T – don’t sweat the haters. I think this is a great contest. What an amazing way to both hand out great prizes and get constructive feedback on how to make this site better. Is it wrong to be a little happy with every comment I see about people not entering because it’s on Facebook? It just means one less person I have to compete against!

On a side note a couple of my friends have already asked me why I hate your site so much because of the comment I wrote on Facebook. I had to explain I actually love your site and that it’s part of a contest you’re running.

blstrong (SeeRed) August 9, 2012 at 8:38 am

Don’t assume we’re haters- just disappointed. I can just imagine the amount of effort that went in to putting together such great prize packages. I get that I will not be able to enter without the free FB account. I have my reasons for not having one in the first place and if that excludes me from the contest, so be it. The disappointment comes from the build-up, as someone has already said, with no mention about the FB connection, from a site that prides itself on doing things a bit differently. But in the end it is also a business with budget considerations, which I also get. I’m not going to bail on what I believe is a great site because of this, but I am allowed my disappointment. Good luck.

Eric August 9, 2012 at 8:23 am

I’m not angry about the Facebook, and I understand your budget issues, but what’s wrong with using this comment feature of the site to log “non-facebook” users entries? There is no additional cost, and I would be happy to include name, address, etc in comments field to ensure no multiple entries……..just a thought. It is an awesome prize, and having a shot to win is worth coming back again and again to the site.

Golfspy Matt August 9, 2012 at 8:43 am

“No additional cost” ignores the man hours that would be spent moving your comment from here to facebook to be voted on.

Golfspy Matt August 9, 2012 at 8:23 am

Isn’t joining facebook free? Apparently I’m missing something, because I don’t get all the anger towards the facebook requirement. I don’t think anyone is requiring that you post your address, phone number, SSN, or anything else on facebook…just open a FREE account. Hell, open a facebook-specific email address if you don’t want Zuckerberg to have your “real” one.

I have had almost zero involvement in setting up this contest, but based on the lack of responses I’ve gotten from T and X lately, I know they are spending 24 hours a day trying to make this work.

Once again, I think the guys who are doing all this bitching and whining are overlooking the very simple reality that there is NO BUDGET. Tim, Dave, and myself are paid NOTHING. T and X left jobs that pay much more to work on this site full time. I’m sure there were ways to run this contest without facebook, but it seems they were cost prohibitive.

“Sorry” for the rant, but this is a huge contest that two guys spent months working on, and when I open this page I see a stream of guys bitching about it.

GolfSpy T August 9, 2012 at 8:16 am

As I said, we knew the Facebook component would alienate some readers…and some of those would be long-time loyal readers. It’s not like this is the only giveaway we have, or will ever offer. There will be future opportunities that don’t involve Facebook.

But again, the complexity of the contest we wanted to run, along with our time and cost considerations left us with Facebook as the best option.

Quite honestly I find it trouble that long-time, and loyal readers, subscribers, etc. would truly have a problem with this. You guys know our situation (no big OEM advertisers), and what the implications are on our budget (we don’t have one). Despite that we were able to partner with OEMs both big and small to put together one hell of a prize package.

I have invested weeks of my life putting together this massive contest for those who choose to participate. The fact that some people are angry (disappointed I get, but angry…the sense of entitlement is bewildering) because they aren’t able to enter a huge giveaway 100% on their terms is offensive,

tanksfurnutin August 9, 2012 at 8:25 am

You can be offended just as I can be annoyed. I have not entered any of your contests in the past even though I come to this site several times a day. I will not enter any contest that requires facebook and if that’s what is needed to enter so be it. Three days of buildup with no mention of facebook being a requirement is just a plain waste of my time. I

RP Jacobs II August 10, 2012 at 10:03 am

TFN, then instead of wasting your time responding you should just have posted your username:

I love how people post just to read their own writing…LOL…..

Fairways & Greens 4ever……

BackNine29 August 9, 2012 at 8:12 am

It appears that a Facebook link is required to participate. Seriously? The fun is NOT beginning. I guess “old schoolers” not doing FB are out.

blstrong (SeeRed) August 9, 2012 at 8:05 am

f***ing facebook?!?! nice. guess I’m out. amazing prize packages, yes. amazing contest? not so much. count me very disappointed. to me “we knew we might lose a few entries” reads like “we knew we would be excluding a few of our loyal readers, subscribers and contributors.” yeah, I’m bitter.

RP Jacobs II August 10, 2012 at 9:47 am

SR, I don’t recall your name from ANYWHERE in the forum as a “contibutor,” so I’m curious, have you made a monetary donation to MGS that would qualify you as a “contributor?”….

RP Jacobs II August 10, 2012 at 9:56 am

And Dude, if a benign contest, that you voluntarily choose not to participate in, is enough to cause you bitterness, you’ve got issues far deeper than your disdain for FB…JMHO…….

Fairways & Greens 4ever…

brent holden August 9, 2012 at 8:01 am

well so much for the little website that could,, facebook? wow what a let down,,:(

mybluc4 August 9, 2012 at 8:00 am

Guys, grown-ups do not use (or for that matter necessarily trust) Facebook. Can’t believe the moving parts could not be managed in alternative technologies.

GolfSpy T August 9, 2012 at 8:05 am

With nearly a billion people on Facebook, I don’t think it’s a stretch to assume a few are grownups. And yes…there are alternative technologies here, but when you consider that we have 2 full-time employees, and almost no budget, efficiency and cost control are extremely important to how we operate.

We knew Facebook would be a non-starter for some people. And while we do regret that some people will choose not to participate because of that, at the end of the day all we’re offering is a chance to win over 10K in prizes. Participation in any of our giveaways, regardless of the terms, is always optional.

Rev Kev August 14, 2012 at 5:44 am

How more gracious can our hosts be in answering a blitz of questions and explaining themselves. It makes sense that they’d need someone to manage this contest for them. If it weren’t facebook it would have to be someplace else.

I have an account, I’ve entered, I’ve encountered issues in entering despite the fact that I use facebook regularly but I’ve taken the time to learn how to work the contest. First place is worth $5,000. Do you expect something for nothing? At the very least we can be grateful to MyGolfSpy for everything the guys there do. Hopefully they’ll gain more recognition and membership from some of our facebook friends.

Thanks guys very much.

FACEBOOK!!! That’s very disappointing!!!

John Sabourin August 9, 2012 at 8:26 am

DLouis808, are you in the USA ? If you are, then you can’t imagine all those who are dissapointed at not being able to enter 100’s,(if not 1000’s) of golf related contests,(or even in some cases, can’t even buy items) simply because they live in Canada ‘;’ Talk about putting up fences. Even if i never win one thing from MyGolfSpy, i can still take away the knowlage that i’ve gained about so many things golf related, and the cool people that add to the whole MyGolfSpy scene.

Jim Angkham August 9, 2012 at 7:52 am

Graham August 9, 2012 at 7:51 am

Can we enter if we are based overseas in Europe? Sorry can’t find ant T’s & C’s.

mygolfspy August 9, 2012 at 8:20 am

Yes 😉

Jacob Buchanan August 9, 2012 at 7:45 am

What if we don’t have a Facebook account?

GolfSpy T August 9, 2012 at 7:55 am

Unfortunately a Facebook account is required. Facebook was the only way we could manage the moving parts inexpensively.

GolfSpy T August 9, 2012 at 7:41 am

We knew we might lose a few entries because of the facebook requirement.

The actual back-end of the contest is complex…essentially we have to account for entries, multiple rounds of voting, final results, etc, and of course, what gets displayed when requires a calendar/dating component as well.

Simply put, the website tools we have at our disposal don’t allow for us to manage this contest to the degree that it needs to be managed. Facebook applications provide an affordable way for us to put on what we think is a pretty amazing contest.

tanksfurnutin August 9, 2012 at 8:03 am

I find it really annoying that in order to enter this contest you need to join facebook. It would have been nice to know this ahead of time. I will not be joining and would like to be removed from your e-mail list. Thanks.

Eric August 9, 2012 at 7:36 am

can’t enter unless you have facebook account? what’s up with that?
