The Next Scotty Cameron

The Next Scotty Cameron
“Scotty wasn’t doing the caliber of work at 27 that I am now.” – Tyson Lamb

For the better part of 25 years, Scotty Cameron has set the standard by which every other putter maker is measured. He’s part craftsman, part politician, and 100% marketing opportunist.

His putters and accessories are responsible for an incomparable collectible market and he’s the reason we’re okay talking about putter prices in the five-digits (and $300 headcovers).

He is Scotty Cameron and this is a space he’s created. But he can’t last forever, and we believe we know who’s next in line

On-Deck Circle

No one is suggesting the Cameron empire is going to crumble overnight. There’s far too many fanatics and collectors for that to happen. The more likely scenario is a gradual transition where Scotty fades to the periphery and in his place stands Tyson Lamb.

lamb-1

Respect the Legend, Do Your Thing

Scotty is 53, Tyson is 27. Scotty has built an empire and Tyson is, by his own admission, trying to figure things out. If you didn’t know any better, you might think Tyson is intimidated by all of Scotty’s success.

While he readily admits a profound and deep “respect for all SC has done” and acknowledges Cameron’s model as the only one worth emulating, Tyson is anything but star-struck. In fact, (CAD technology notwithstanding) Tyson proclaims “Scotty wasn’t doing the caliber of work at 27 that I am now.”

Tell it Like it Is

In this over-commercialized world where every interview seems scripted and political correctness is valued more than honesty, it’s invigorating when Tyson tells you “Camerons are over-engineered and Bettinardi does way too much paintfill.” He goes on to say, “Scotty is smart, but he thinks the industry is stupid… he talks down to the consumer.”

His intent isn’t to slander the very names who make his livelihood possible, but rather Tyson can’t help but be anything other than brutally honest. Moreover, Tyson sees himself as a true artist and craftsman, not simply someone who “stamps dogs and smiley faces on putters.”

That’s something you need to know about Tyson. He’s brash and arrogant, and his putters are unlike anything on the market. Period.

It’s like my father used to say, “It’s not arrogant if you can back it up.”

Tyson backs it up. And then some.

Not Just Gamers, Collectibles Too

In high school Tyson would buy an off-the-rack Cameron Studio Stainless for $300, modify it and turn around and sell it for three to four times what he bought it for. “I just figured it out” is his only explanation as to how he got this good, this fast. It almost seems too easy, but this kid is Picasso with a milling machine.

Tyson doesn’t view himself solely as a putter maker. He does a large volume of custom work (signage, etc.) but if selling five custom pieces for $2,600 a pop through Jim Butler is any sort of harbinger, custom signs and metalwork is going to be taking a back seat for a bit. Or the next couple decades. Tyson is already establishing himself as a credible player in the high-end collectible market and he’s fitting into a self-defined “weird hole” with his custom pieces, which start at $1,000 and only go up from there.

This puts his price above a typical Bettinardi or Piretti, but well below the $1,700 price tag of a basic Circle T Cameron. Tyson is quick to note while “$1,000 is crazy for a putter”, he’s picking up more and more former Cameron clients because “I’ll do what Scotty won’t”. If you’re paying a premium for a handmade, custom putter you’d like to think the name on it is the same person who created it.

“Not made in China”

lamb-2

If you scan Tyson’s Instagram, you’ll see “Not Made in China” stampings, which is his way of giving a middle finger to the “B.S. of marketing and lack of connection between consumer and process.” It’s not that Tyson is some type of xenophobe, but he reacts with disdain when someone just plants his name on a product, giving the impression he actually created, designed, milled, stamped, polished and delivered the product. I think this is what Tyson means when he says “Piretti is just a face.” Bold? Yes. Accurate? That’s debatable.

Do you want one yet?

Don’t check in your local PGA Superstore, on Ebay, or any green grass account. Right now, you can DM Tyson through his Instagram account while he continues to build his official website. Call it purposeful exclusivity.

There’s no reason for Tyson to grow too quickly. He could make a bunch of prototypes, call in a couple favors and take his chances next to every other bag on the practice greens every week on the PGA Tour. He could catch lightning in a bottle or it could be a colossal waste of time and money. The more prudent approach, according to Lamb, is to solidify a strategy which will allow him maintain control over every step of the process and see how things go if he ramps up production to 15 or 20 putters a month.

lamb-3

If he’s as good as I think he is, it’s only a matter of time until a major OEM comes calling with the resources and reach to take Tyson Lamb from garage artisan to penthouse icon.

As for critics? Tyson doesn’t spend a lot of time worrying about that noise or becoming the next “whomever.” He’s more concerned with refining his craft; petty critics claiming he doesn’t have the clout or name recognition to be “charging what he does” can kiss his ass. But excuse him if he doesn’t exactly take them seriously – he’s kind of busy becoming the best putter architect you just heard about.

Man this hasn’t aged well. Lol just read for first time and have seen 2+ years squandered by Tyson Lamb. With new guys on the scene it’s obvious to me Tyson is not capable of keeping up with the likes of those who actually know what they are doing. Take Olsen for example, guy just duplicated Tysons look and actually makes putters! Then you got companies like Swag! My god swag was just a dumb name 3 years ago now they got the cover world by the balls and their putters are starting to blow up. I’d even argue in past two years Tyson Lamb may have gone backwards. Just my .02

My hat is off to any young intrapreneur making their mark in today’s product development market. As a mechanical engineer who has been designing new products for over 30 years, and has extensive CAD and CNC experience, I think Tyson’s work is marvelous. The only observation I would make is that Scotty Cameron made his fame/fortune by copying the basic Karsten Ping design from years ago and converting the Ping Anser profile to a CNC machined version. Cameron putters are indeed beautiful putter’s, but let’s not forget Karstan Solheim’s contribution that started the initial revolution.

Wow. Months later and this is still going on . Well, it’s a cold day, may as well chime in. :) Yes, I have seen these putters in person. And over the past 2+ decades, I have been lucky to buy, sell, trade, build, design, make, deliver, refinish, rebuild & screw up more putters than I care to count. Also have been exposed to many backgrounds, personalities, stories & the people behind a lot of these putters/equipment. First – designing ANYTHING from scratch like that (that works) isn’t easy. Just like you can take the basic shape of a 2 door car- you can take an ‘Anser’ shape and come up with thousands of variations. You can also screw it up. That goes for ANY design. Weather it’s a TP Mills looking Trad 1 looking Blade to the Anser. (Which is pure genius in design). Second, I will say,the oddest thing I have seen in 25 years in the golf business, is what has happened in the world of (wait for it) putters. yes, putters. I have literally seen .. intense personal & online arguments , near fistfights, & friendships/relationships lost over………putters ??? . I can understand if someone is sponsored by brand X, and someone defends brand X. That’s a professional thing that happens daily. But losing friendships by defending OR tearing down a piece of metal made by someone you never met? Some weekend warriors who defend a brand to the death, like they are paid sponsor lol. It’s nuts- Makes no sense to me. Now, I know plennnnty who have legit business dealing reasons for some genuine bad feelings. But, the politics of putters, has gotten pretty ridiculous. There’s plenty of canvas for anyone who decides to be an artist – we should be lucky to look at what’s offered today.

Jimmy MacIlroy Happy to continue. First of all Tyson makes an Asner yes but he makes it better than anyone I have seen make them in 16 years of both being in golf and putter design. I tip my cap to him, he has a talent even if it is using a canvas others have previously used. Unfortunately for putter designers if you want to make it you have to have an Anser, that is what golfers stupidly continue to buy. Now, on to Bobby Grace designs. I have seen just about every putter design over the past 25 years, both being in the industry, designing them and buying them for analysis. His putters are the poorest quality of any I have seen. His new business model is a scam. He is one of the worst people we have dealt with personally in our time at MGS. Ask people in the industry, not what Bobby tells you and I think you will get a much different picture of the guy you sound like you think you know. But I digress. Lets get back to his putters. His welds are shit, his epoxy jobs are horrendous, his machining is sloppy, his designs are not only dated but poorly designed, his finishes are the worst I have seen by anyone not working in a garage. He did have ONE tech that worked though HMT. Problem is it sounded and felt like shit. No one wants his tech or his personality on their team. Now I know Bobby, his designs and others that he has dealt with over the past 15 years I am using as evidence.

Adjust the lie angle… I’ll have to find a #9, I assume you have one of my Revealers? There’s so much more that goes into lie angle balancing. My guess is that they reverse engineered one of my putters as guys from Oddesey bought a couple about four years ago. There’s a good chance they’re infringing in my issued patent. I guess I’ll have to look further into it…when you make something great or new advancements its just a matter of time before he big companies try to copy it. I’ve rolled one of the new toe up putters but have to say it looked hooked to my eye was not even close to being as solid as a DF and couldn’t get it fitted so considering all that I’m not to concerned but will still look into them further when I have time.

not the same physics , very low moi, over rotates , cheap casting instead of DF forged followed up with CNC’s , only comes in one lie angle(so it really can’t be fitted) , no Press Grip and we have made large investments in time and money so the wait is about 5-7 days … Brad , here’s a link to a video that I made to Test other tie up putters, most people don’t understand that just because it’s toe up doesn’t mean it’s lie angle balanced (not even close, I own the patent ) , there a reason we received a 5 out if 5 star review and the odyssey received a ‘flop’. Also excluding the shaft, the DF is 100% made in the USA.https://youtu.be/dWPLcyZ8ZYM

I have a valid question. If they’re all cnc and basically aesthetically all the same for argument sake, then what makes a Scotty, with or without a circle T, as well as their head covers, command so much more in selling price? Just wondering, are there that many sheep in our game who just don’t consider valid quality and pricing value of an item? Or is it a “hey I just wanna look like everyone else out there” I’m puzzled a bit, isn’t the game all about individuality and owning your own style?

He may be good. It appears it’s all esthetics though, and at a hefty fee, which shrinks the market (most of us are concerned with balance and feel, not $2k worth of “in your face stamping). So, to ever be anything more than a boutique (using his own name and product), he’ll need to steal market share from Scotty himself, and that will never happen. Ever.

The rest is a catch 22; he needs an OEM to pick him up to get to the “penthouse” but he clearly hates the OEM market (given his Scotty-esque stamped barbs). So he’ll have to sell out in order to thrive, thus killing the very cache that got him to where he is now.

      Time will tell.

Regardless of his fate, great story….very well done.

I read this interview and heard nothing but a narcissist being interview by an enabler, I have yet to find a hand milled original design by Tyson Lamb, I did find many Karsten Solheim design copies with “inspired” stamps, think we have all seen the “tour dots” the circled (insert item here) and finishes offered many years ago.
Mr. Tyson has also succeed in alienating many purist and older golfers who have the disposable income to purchase his Anser copies. And finally, in this age of technology, does not take more than money to be the “next Cameron”, scan and add your “specs”, send it to a finisher like BOS and you can call yourself a “putter maker”,,,,,,

Tyson quit calling yourself a machinist. You’re not a machinist. You’re a privileged young man from Dallas who learned cad/cam and figured out how to use a CNC mill to make putters. A machinist spends years honing a trade, working in tough conditions for next to nothing. You can’t do what a machinist does and you don’t deserve the title. It’s a spit in the face to all those who do.

Geoffrey since when did working in poor conditions for next to nothing make you a machinist? Maybe you should do just a little more research before posting idiotic comments. At the end of the day, literally thousands of golfers who had never heard of of Tyson Lamb know his name now. And not for anything, a lot what is being said about him is exactly the sort of thing that was said about Cameron. Mind-boggling that some inside the Lamb camp feel they need to resort to damage control.

The kid is really, really good, and he knows it. Haters gonna hate. I guess that part is new to him, but he’ll get used to it. I’m sure Scotty has.

Ryan – Chris responded to your question within the comment feed on the post itself. Here is that reply:

“Honestly, that’s a ridiculous question. Every piece of the article is 100% factual and accurate. End of story.”

In my position as editor of MyGolfSpy, let me add this: We absolutely stand behind every word and every quote. Chris spent a considerable amount of time on the phone with Tyson before writing this post. Apparently some close to Tyson don’t approve of how he was portrayed, and while everyone is entitled to an opinion, any suggestion that we cut corners, misrepresented what we were told, what have you, is, quite frankly, total crap.

As I’ve had to say far too frequently, “it’s not like we just pull this stuff out of our asses”.

Certainly it can be very difficult to capture the nuances of a personality in text, but I think Chris did an excellent job. Tyson is brash. He says what’s on his mind. He’s supremely confident, and quite frankly we believe he has every right to be.

While I can see how some might see that as arrogance, in the time I spent with Tyson at the PGA Show I saw a guy who was unsure about the next step for his business, but had an absolutely unwavering belief in the quality of his work. He’s good…really good, and he knows it. Some readers apparently would prefer he pretend otherwise.

None of that makes him a bad person.

This certainly wasn’t intended as any sort of negative piece. We don’t think there’s anybody else like Tyson out there right now. In our mind…mine, Adam’s, he is the next in line. That too, obviously is an opinion, but I share it to illustrate that no matter how anybody inside the Lamb circle took it. We love Tyson’s work, and we like his attitude too.

While he wasn’t shy about his thoughts on how he can improve over existing models, I didn’t find him the least bit disrespectful, and it’s not a particularly fine line between respect and worship. Tyson, I believe is on the right side of it.

And hell, let’s be honest about some things, Bettinardi does use too much paint-fill on occasion, Scotty acts as if he’s above offering a certain subset of services…are we really upset somebody would share an honest opinion.

So to rehash…we stand by every single word in the article. We think the world of Tyson’s work (I texted a friend and suggested the big golf company he works for should hire Tyson immediate), and yeah we don’t have any problem with how he carries himself. – Tony Covey, Editor, MyGolf Spy

      Tony,

Thank you for the follow up on this. I think you summed things up nicely. The article didn’t do anything to convey what you stated so clearly in your post. Instead it presented a sense of brashness that is far from the person that many know. I am glad you expressed this in your comments as well since you have met Tyson. There is a certain pride he has that was conveyed in the article but didn’t show how he appreciates those that also do the same thing. He has never had anything but respect for those that have mastered the craft that he is working on every day. He might get upset at me for even replying to this but Thanks to MGS and Chris for putting the story out there and thanks again for the follow up post.

      Chris,

Thanks for your comments. People are certainly complex and whatever layers of Tyson he presented in my conversations with him are perhaps not the entirety of his persona, but they are the pieces he shared with me. I haven’t met Tyson, but would love to. I haven’t had the chance to roll one of his putters, but there’s not another putter out there more captivating than Tyson’s – and for what it’s worth, I don’t think there’s a putter maker with more current upside than Tyson (hence the title of the article!)

Just because he’s honest, doesn’t mean he is disrespectful. Just because he speaks his mind, doesn’t mean he’s wrong – and just because he’s well aware of his abilities doesn’t mean he can’t be proud of them. Maybe he can even knock my handmade TP Mills out of my bag some day.

The few guys I have played with that have owned multiple Scotty’s all loved the sound, feel & finish of my Bridgeport from Tyson. My putter was 100% personal before it was even cut & that in itself has inspired me to PRACTICE more which is what I need to become a better putter.

Amazing to think that it’s all built on a copy of the PING Anser that the great man Karsten Solheim designed over 50 years ago, with no CAD and any of the technology the SC relies upon.
Scotty built his brand by copying PING and Tyson seems to be just following in his footsteps.
If imitation really is the greatest form of flattery then the Solheims can justifiably be very proud.

I take pride in my work, just as others do in their own craft. I will be the first to tell you; guys like Scotty, Bettinardi, and Piretti inspired me to become a maker. I have a tremendous amount of respect for them and would never intentionally take a shot at them. It’s tough to sit back and watch others ridicule my work because of one person’s opinion. Based on the article, I don’t blame you, but the ones who know me might have a different opinion. Technology has allowed me to design and create things in ways other guys couldn’t before. I pride myself on listening to customers and creating things that have personal meaning to them. I’m not in the business for mass production; I’m in the business for quality. Someone mentioned here that “nobody likes a guy that talks about how awesome he is.” Really? Our next President (Trump) has a habit of doing that, seems to be working for him.

The kid is just doing some smart marketing, it draws attention to his products. His putters look great and if someone is willing to spend that much money on a putter, he will probably do well, at least well enough for him. Or as is the American way now-a-days, a big corporation will buy him out and #@*! it all up. But he’ll have his money and retire on a island somewhere and be just fine. Best of luck to you Tyson.

Prime example of why kids need to play contact sports. Kids that act like this get popped in the throat, and you can tell when kids like Lamb talk, that he was too sheltered to have been taught how to be respectful. You don’t have to kiss SC’s butt, at the same time though, show a little respect and let your work do the talking. I really notice a difference in feel as compared to the previous models with inserts. He’s done a much better job this time around. Everyone that said the putter feels dead and mushy, its about 70% the grip and 30% the dampening tape on the insert in my opinion.

Plus the head feels much heaver with the thinner/lighter grip, helps with consistency for me at least in my stroke.

This makes me think of him as the Pepsi to Scotty Cameron’s Coke. If you’re going to do your own thing, then do it; don’t focus on the competition.

I do hope someone with interesting designs like this ends up with an OEM, but I think he’s more likely to be another Byron Morgan or Piretti: great sticks with a loyal following, but too niche to ever be successful on the mass market. I guess time will tell!

…with that said, I do like his cheeky demeanor, and hope he has some success, and if he uses “ASS” American Stainless exclusively, and acknowledges that GSS is a total sham, then he’ll have me on board immediately.

Anyone, and I mean anyone, who would pay $1K+ for a putter needs his/her head examined. With the emergence of PXG it appears every maker wants a shot at the “high end” market. Titletist, themselves, will be introducing a new driver ($1K+), but will it REALLY improve your game and just deplete your wallet?

      Chris Nickel

Why? People spend more money than other people think they “should” all of the time. Does everyone who drops $100 for a bottle of wine or $20K on a Rolex need their heads examined as well? There’s a lot more to factor into a purchase than just the functionality to understand why people buy the things they do.

He does every trick in the book to a putter, but he’s missing some major design collateral talent. I’m not seeing anything remotely original from a brand identity standpoint and things like putter covers are dancing scotty rehashes.

And he skipped the most important part of the Scotty biz model… Succeed at the retail level first then start to charge thousands for a putter.

From a brand perspective the kid doesn’t have a story. He makes blinged putters and charges a high premium thinking that’s all people want. You don’t spend 2K just for a putter. You spend 2k for the back story that brings emotional responses.

I agree. No one is doing the type of work he currently is. If people are willing to look at the customization process, finishes, stamping, inlay, etc. no one else is doing it the way he is. If people want to peddle the “every putter is a derivative of Solheim” position, then A) You’re missing out on some awesome work and B) That argument is just tired and while yes, Karsten rightfully sits on the Mt. Rushmore of most important and emulated club designs in the history of golf, it’s most often used to discount something someone has done than to actually give credit to Mr. Solheim.

I met Tyson about 7 years ago when he was saying some of the same things about his belts and buckles. The industry leaders he was comparing his stuff with are still around, but Identity Belts & Buckles isn’t. His putters look great, but there’s lots of competition out there, even at the high end. I’m interested to see how he does.

Tyson still makes great buckles and belts. My son and I have several. The name changed to Black Diamond several years ago when he started making more products. As for his putters, I know several people that have them, and they love them. My son is on the list to get one, and can’t wait. We have talked with Tyson numerous times and have only great things to say. He is a perfectionist and you can tell it in his work. Tyson is confident and very honest. In no way is he arrogant and brash. We wish him the best of luck.
