Can Volvik Golf Make 2013 The Year of the Colored Ball?

Hi, my name’s Dave and I play a colored golf ball.

(by Dave Wolfe) That’s right, I said it. I prefer to play golf with a non-white golf ball. No, I don’t know why. Maybe it’s the increased visibility or maybe the color just improves my mood. All I know is that I just really like playing colored balls. Right now it’s the yellow Wilson Staff Duo, but I have also dabbled with the Yellow Callaway Hex Chrome and Srixon’s yellow Z-Star. I know that some of you white-ball-purists are already tuning out, but you get to like what you like. For me, it’s color.

For the past few years it seems like the golf ball makers have figured out that there are quite a few of us who like the non-white on the course. They have also realized that while we want color, we also still demand a ball that performs.

As much as I like colored balls, I am not going to play one if it ultimately hurts my score.

Head to the shop and look at the ball selection.  You will find colored offerings, mainly yellow, from Wilson Staff, Titleist, Srixon, Bridgestone, and Callaway. Those are some big names in the ball industry. Many of us remember when Srixon introduced the yellow Z Star, promoting it by somehow getting some of the PGA guys to play it for a tournament or two. I loved seeing those yellow balls being played on TV. Their tour play didn’t last, but it did seem to help keep the colored balls on the shelf, even if there are only one or two colors to pick from.

Look at those colors!

As a lover of colored golf balls, my attention is usually drawn to new ones that I see in the shop. That’s how I first became aware of the Volvik brand. The bright colors caught my eye. However, at the time, I didn’t know anything about Volvik, and as a result, I didn’t buy any. I found the bright colors appealing, but without some more information, I was not going to risk my golf money on them.

As fate would have it, a bit later I ran into one of the Volvik reps at a local golf expo. It became immediately apparent during that conversation was that the colored Volvik ball was not just a cosmetic novelty, but rather a high-quality ball that came in different colors.

What made me think the Volvik ball was high quality?

Data is king is the golf industry. If you make performance claims, you had better be able to back them up. If Volvik says that their balls outperform others in the market, they had better have some numbers that support that claim.

Here are some of the Iron Byron test numbers that Volvik’s uses as the basis for its performance claims:

Volvik Crystal

Iron Byron Data: Volvik Crystal

  • Volvik Crystal tested  #2 in Driver Ball Speed, beating Bridgestone, Callaway, Nike, Taylor Made and Srixon
  • Volvik Vista iV beat Bridgestone and Callaway in Total Driver Dispersion

What Do Those Numbers Mean?

There were two things that I looked at in their testing. First, what balls did they test against, and second, what were the conditions of the test? I think that the choice of competitors seems appropriate for each of the balls. The Volvik Crystal was pitted against the quality, but second-tier balls from the other companies while the Volvik Vista iV challenged the big name tour balls.

The “compared to what” part of the test seems solid. The testing parameters seem appropriate as well. All of you “ask the robot” guys will appreciate the Iron Byron part of the test, although many on the other side of the robot argument don’t think that Mr. Byron gives real world golfer type swings. Driver and 8-iron swings are fine for comparison, although I would like to see wedge scoring as well. My only real question comes from matching driver swing-speed with the 8-iron. Odds are that the person who swings a driver at 95 mph is also not swinging the 8-iron at that speed.

These concerns aside, lets look at the results. Iron Byron testing shows that the Volvik Crystal and the Volvik Vista iV ranked first or second in every category. Spectacular colors, supported by performance.

Tell me more about Volvik Golf Balls

You can see why this colored ball intrigued me. I needed to know more about Volvik and their Crystal and Vista iV lines so I posed these five questions to John Claffey, Volvik’s National Director of Sales and Marketing.

What is the common golfer’s perception of the colored golf ball?

“In the past I believe there has been two misconceptions that exist with color golf balls. One is that they are not high performance. The other is that color golf balls are only for women or seniors. We have recently come to market with our current line up to shatter these misconceptions.  Golfers are more open to color than ever before and it’s following a global pattern. I truly believe that with the Baby Boomers coming to a point where visibility in the air and knowing where you are on the golf course trumps following a traditionalist mindset that colored golf ball sales will climb as high as 25% in the US market.  It helps that the youth has embraced color in golf and that it’s considered cool again, but the reality of it is that color golf balls can make the game more fun to play, speed up the game and bring a little personality back to a segment of the game that has been geared towards a low-end, price point market for far too long.”

Where did this perception come from?

“The perception or misconceptions of colored golf balls came from years and years of color golf balls being made without the core golfer in mind. No one was focusing on a tour quality color golf ball and trying to get tour players using different colors other than a few instances. The way to change a perception in golf is always to do it through tour play. If they do it out there, it’s OK for other golfers to try it. It happens all the time in our sport. We saw an open niche in the golf market being the highest quality and performing color golf balls and also noticed an uptick in colored golf ball sales and ad dollars. But still people were holding onto the traditionalist mindset that they had to play a white golf ball. Just years and years of conditioning at work there. It’s still a hurdle, but we’ve seen a major sea change in a very short amount of time to people wanting to bring color to their game.”

Why is the Volvik colored ball different?

“We are very proud of the performance of our golf balls, regardless of color. We spend a lot more money on the manufacturing process and we feel we utilize different materials no one else has thought to use.  We combine a solid inner core encased in a softer casing that provides the optimal spin separation and optimizes the balance of both distance and control. Optimal spin generated by the more solid inner core creates longer distance off the driver and long irons the spin increases closer to the green due to the firm outer core, producing higher spin for total control and the ability to stop on a dime on the green.

Most other companies feature a soft inner core with a harder outer layer. Our secret is we do the opposite, a solid inner core combined with a soft outer layer. The dual core optimizes distance by transferring the power from the more solid inner core to the softer outer layer instead of transferring inertia from a soft inner core to a solid outer layer like the competition.

The outer layer also reduces excess driver spin, increasing the moment of inertia and centrifugal force, leading to more distance and more roll.  The outer core of the golf ball that contributes a great source of power, Bismuth, is compressed in a high temperature heating treatment. Unlike normal metal, Bismuth expands 3-3.5% in volume, leading to greater energy transfer.   Zirconium is the base material for ceramic and improves durability of a golf ball cover without sacrificing spin control. This is all our own technology, most of the dimple patents and everything else do. We’ve been making golf balls for 30 years, so we feel we are leading the way with this soft outer cover and solid inner core technology and not just following the leader so to speak.”

Will we see more colored balls on tour?

“By getting 4 different colors on play on the professional tours this year, we have the most different colors in play by a golf ball manufacturer in the history of golf. Regardless of color, Volvik has been as high as the #3 most played golf ball on the LPGA Tour this season and our stats have been very impressive. In the last 13 LPGA Tour events, players using Volvik colored golf balls have earned one Victory, 11 Top 10 finishes (including eight Top 5’s) and 23 total Top 25 finishes.

We also have 20 players using us on the Symetra Tour, where we are the official golf ball. We still need to penetrate more of the men’s professional tours, which we have started doing through the Web.com Tour this year. Three-time All-American from UCLA Erik Flores, our first male professional to sign a deal in the US, hit a 349-yard drive with an orange Vista iV ball the other week for the longest drive of the BMW Charity Pro Am on the Web.com Tour. So we are definitely breaking down barriers. We have several players on PGA, Web.com and Champions currently testing the ball. Our plan is to continue what we are doing with the LPGA and to expand on the Web.com and Champions and to evaluate we are with the PGA TOUR.”

“I did extensive testing with the golf ball and I found it to be an extremely high performance golf ball that does everything I need it to do,” said Flores. “I enjoy the strong flight of the ball and the heavier feel off the club face due to the solid core of the ball, as opposed to the soft core of other golf balls. This also adds more control to my approach shots. I am excited to be a part a company that is bold in their use of new materials and is not afraid to break the paradigm of the white golf ball. Finally a golf ball that contributes to my game and my style.”
Erik Flores, Web.com Tour Player

How does a smaller company like Volvik plan on competing with the giants in the market like Titleist, Callaway, Wilson Staff, and the others?

“The golf ball market is a tough and competitive arena. For us, it’s our performance that is leading the way. There are a lot of good golf balls out there, but because we make ours so much differently, we feel we have a good technology story to compete with. You add color to that mix and you have a company doing things much differently than the competition.

We know we have a golf ball that will stand up to the other great balls on the market and we feel we have all the earmarks to be the next new big brand in golf: we have the tour story, we have the #1 claim, we have the performance, we have the right golf ball for every skill level and we have the fashion and increased visibility golfers are looking for today. We also have the brightest colors in golf, which helps us stand out on the tour telecasts, so we have a nice buzz going and the word only spreads more when new golfers try our product and see what performance benefits we bring to their game.

We are doing very well with the better golfer. Some of them are better players in the region who are playing our Pink Vista iV for the mere reason that they like bombing a Pink golf ball past their buddies. We’re currently the only 4-piece tour ball being offered in Orange, Green and Pink. We also specialize in high performance, color, low compression, 3-piece golf balls for slower swing speeds, and no one else is catering to this specific market like we are. People have told me that people in the colored golf ball market don’t care about performance and that they only care about price.”

“If you get them 15-20 extra yards, greater durability and a ball that’s easier to see, that kind of thinking goes out the window. Everybody wants greater performance, that’s why they are out there.”- John Claffey, National Director of Sales and Marketing for Volvik.

Did you play them Dave?

I have had a chance to take both balls out on the course for some “testing”. I put testing in quotes because I am not an Iron Byron, and I don’t have a spare Flightscope lying around. Think of my testing parameters more like your buddy’s when you see him playing a ball and you ask him how he likes it.

The short report is that I enjoyed playing both balls. The colors really jump out at you on the course. The pink is crazy bright, allowing you to easily track ball flight from start to finish. You can find them rapidly, and I could see the simple change to playing colored balls speeding up pace of play. I prefer the putter feel of the Vista iV over the Crystal, but both performed similar for me in other areas.

Here’s an example of my play:

On two different occasions, one with the Crystal and one with the Vista iV, I found myself putting for eagle. I missed both putts because I had that “this is for eagle” thought before putting, but that’s not important. You see, those two eagle putts brings my total eagle putt count to three. One in my previous four years of playing, and then two in the past six weeks, both with Volvik balls. It’s not controlled, scientific experimentation, but I know that these balls have game in them. Buddy-trials have elicited similar results. Most guys start skeptical, and then flat-out refuse to give me the ball back after they play it.

Have you tried Volvik Balls?

I am curious if any of you have tried the Volvik balls and what your experiences are with them. If you haven’t tried them, you should. They are bright, long, and spin well. Price-wise, these come in at the same price-point as the balls they compete against.

You can get a dozen Volvik Crystals for $32.99, with the Volvik Vista iV retailing for $47.99. If you’re unsure about buying a whole box, see if your shop will sell you a sleeve. Check out the variety packs as well so you can try out the colors. I am a fan of the orange and the pink, but the green and yellow also jump off of the turf. Give them a shot and let me know what you think.

I’m always looking for a longer golf ball. I’ve been following Volvik for a while but hadn’t purchased them. I hit golf balls behind my house from a shag bag and I recently noticed when I went to pick them up that an older Volvik Crystal golf ball was ALWAYS the furtherest from my driving mat. This old Crystal ball was longer than any other brand including Pro V 1’s that were almost new. I’ve got to test them on the course.

I was first curious when Bubba switched to Volvik. I thought if Bubba is playing them there must be something behind it. Then watched the LPGA with Volvik as a sponsor. Curiosity grew further. Then spoke to my club pro. Now after reading this I’m going with orange. I’m curious to see the spin off irons and distance off the tee. I’m an 8 handicap.

I tried the Volvik Vivid for the first time last week on my regular Monday with my pensioner mates.
      In a word… BRILLIANT!
I hit it further with regularity, it didn’t seem to spray as much and it was easier to follow both in the air and on the ground.
How did I ever manage without it?
I checked out this review page and was told there may be sample available at the bottom of the page.
I couldn’t find where it was, but my review comments still stand.
It is without a doubt the player friendliest ball I’ve ever hit.
      Thank you Volvik!!

I’ve played the Volvik Crystal ball all summer, and as a result of the improved performance I’ve dropped five points off my handicap (20 to 15), and am scoring in the mid-80s on a regular basis. Distance gained with all clubs, from driver to wedges, averages 15-30 yards. Best of all, I’m keeping it in the fairway or first cut of rough 80% of the time. Only downside was the spate of comments like, “It must be hot out, cuz Dave’s balls have turned bright pink!” Those comments have (mostly) ceased, since I’m now beating those jokers!
Even though Volviks cost twice as much as my other standard ball (Wilson 50 Elite), they will remain my golf ball of choice during the warmer months; I’ll use the lower compression Wilsons during the cold weather rounds.

It’s so funny I ran I to this article. My wife was given a dozen yellow crystals for a tournament, and since they weren’t callaways, wouldn’t play them. I’m a 15 handicap, and like playing yellow balls, so MINE. I have increased driving distance, and shots into the green bite at least as well as a NXT. They do feel hard with my putter, but my last few rounds are low 80’s.

I’m sold. Durability is great, and besides the fact they were logo balls with little ladybugs I’m sticking with them till they are gone. Then, buying more.

strange as it may sound, I found a Volvik ball while walking my dogs along a 347 yd hole. While the dogs get exercise, I look for “lost” balls. Usually I find 6-20 balls per day. Most are the premium ones from Titleist, Bridgestone, Top Flight, Nike, and the like. On this particular day I found my first Volvik. It was the furrthest down the fairway, even though it was out of bounds. I came home and looked up the Volvik on line and was surprised by the technical data. Although I prefer an all white ball, I’d play any color Vista IV based on the apparent greater distance I observed while picking up lost balls. Since I’m older and don’t have the swing speed anymore, this ball may make the difference in my game. Thanks for the opportunity.

One of my playing buddies found a Orange Crystal 3-piece and started hitting the ball further and more accurately! Afterward I found a Pro Shop selling then indivually. Bought 6 and I’m back scoring in the 80’s. Gained 20+ yards on my driver & 3-wood. Better yet, the ball stops on the green like I’ve never done before!! Four rounds with the same ball, haven’t needed the other 5 yet. Also, I love the “feel” of the ball, with all of my clubs, but especially my wedges and putter. I’d opt for the Crystal 3-piece, but would love to try the Vista!

I have read numerous reviews trying to find the right ball for me. With a swing speed around 85 mph, I hit pretty straight 220 yard drives with the Nike balls I’m playing now, but I am losing strokes every round because of poor control around the greens. this is especially frustrating because I can hit an 8 or nine iron to the center of the green only to watch it roll 20-30 feet past the hole. The Volvik Crystal looks like the best candidate. Also, I like colored balls and I want to play Orange to set me apart from all my white and yellow friends.M

I like the ball a lot but it cracked the last round I played with it. I liked it so much I bought a
dozen white ones and I am very happy with the ball but I still crack them after so many rounds with the same ball. I have cracked two out of the dozen that I bought so far. I will continue to
buy them because I love the feel I get when I hit it solid. I also hit it farther than the other balls I use to play.

The first time I played the Vista IV (Yellow) was during a 9 hole league day. I play to about a 12 handicap in peak season. On the 3rd hole I made a hole in one. Followed that with 4 birdies in the next 6 holes. Best 9 holes of my life. It wasn’t all due to the ball, as I was putting well too, but off the tee and into the green, this ball allowed me to get close enough to make those putts. I have a fresh box sitting here, ready to go when the weather improves. Maybe I’ll try that pink ball. I like being able to distinguish my ball from the other guys.

I found a Volvik yellow ball during a round and hit a shot with it that the ball seemed to jump off the club. Unfortuneately it traveled much further than usual and went into the water. The shot was straight but just 20 yards past my usual distance. I couldn’t remember the name but knew it started with a V. I later realized it was Volvik after researching golf balls that start with a “V”. I use a yellow ball now and I am going to try Volvik.

I have been playing yellow balls for the last several years because I simply cannot see a white ball in flight off the tee. I used to play Pro V’s and have been wishing that Titleist would quit being so stuck up about making a optic yellow model. If these balls really perform on the same level as the Pro V, Volvik will find I loyal customer in me for good.

My Dad’s friend found a Crystal(white) in the woods and gave it to me saying that it glows in the dark for driving ranges. I put it in my bag and then played a hole at Ridder’s Golf in MA. I’m a beginner, although older, I could feel the difference from the B’Stones that I use. I haven’t lost it yet (the ball), and I will look around for a dealer. Seems nice though. Thanks for listening.

I just tried out the Vista iV orange and I’m quite impressed. I usually only play ProVs and I did not notice any decrease in distance off the tee or spin. Perhaps there was a bit less spin on chips around the green, but it was very minor. I’ll continue playing them and let everyone know how they feel. First time out with them, I shot 74, so no complaints from me…

I have been playing yellow golf balls for years. I prefer the brighter yellow found in the pinnacle and Titliest brands as opposed to the almost metallic looking yellows of the Srixions and Wilsons. I teed up an orange crystal the other day on the first hole at my golf club and can still see that pumpkin high in the air against that blue sky. Just awesome! Can’t wait to put some lime green Vista iVs in the bag.

I was fortunate to read an article on Volvik golf balls. The article described the different Volvik balls available, colors, and player ability recommendations on which ball to play. I was very surprised at the data collected and the comparisons to what are the best-selling golf balls on today’s market. The ball I play is the Titleist Pro V1. So … I started my Quest to find Volvik Vista IV colored balls. Although the Volvik website listed suppliers in particular areas, the majority of the stores did not carry the balls yet. I did find a sleeve of orange Vistas at an independent store. The PGA Store in Myrtle Beach, in the area of a tournament I was competing in, only carried the pink Vistas. When I had a chance to play the orange Vista, other than a sound difference, I surprisingly found the Vista to be comparable to the Pro V1 off the tee and on approach shots to the green. As soon as I recover from shoulder surgery, I will be picking up the dozen multicolored Vistas I special ordered from our local Edwin Watts store!

      DEFINITELY A MUST TRY !!!

They all laughed until I got up to the tee again and hit a 280 yard drive, never do that and landed by the green on the 2nd shot on a par 5 and again birdie. They’re reply was ………. seriously are golf balls from Latvia legal ?

      Hi John
My name is Bill Force and after watching the Ladies Australian Open last week i could not take my eyes off the Volvik golf balls as well as the Volvik golf bag so yesterday with my regular Friday game at Kingston Heath in Melbourne (where Tiger Woods won the Masters) i was given by one of our members a Volvik orange Crystal – 3pc Distance golf ball so i gladly accepted and only played with it for 6 holes because on the 6th hole the way course was to be played on Friday the 15th Par 3 was the 6th hole and yes you have probably guessed i hit a perfect 4 wood and the Volvik ball went straight into the cup for my 1st ever hole in one so i put the ball in my bag so as to have it mounted, i must say after changing to a Callaway white ball my game was not the same so i will be ordering some of your balls and intend to stick with them as the saying goes when you are on a good thing stick to it. One other thing where can i buy a Volvik golf bag ?Just to finish off i really feel that by using your Volvik ball was the reason for my hole in One.

I ordered a dozen orange Vista iV last summer (from Amazon) and immediately loved them. Easier to see in the air and on the grass. Ordered a variety pack of all 4 colors and broke out the pink one in a tournament. I got the expected ribbing from the boys, but easily kept up with the pro V players in both distance and spin. My favorite color now is the green. Less ribbing and easy to see. I have recently been looking all over the internet for the new Vista iS they are introducing this month. Supposedly a little more spin. Haven’t been able to locate them yet but will keep looking.

I ordered a dozen Vista iV in orange (from Amazon) last summer and immediately liked them better than any ball I’ve played. Next dozen I ordered was a combo color dozen and broke the pink ones out in a tournament. I got the expected ribbing from the boys, but easily kept up with the pro V players in both distance and spin. Since then, I tend to prefer the green color, less ribbing and still easy to see. I have gamed both the Bismuth and Vista iv. I have a fast tempo and low 120 swing speed. I found the vista to be a little longer for me maybe 10 yards with a little higher trajectory and plenty of spin. However I gamed the bismuth in a 2 man scramble where I knocked it to 10 feet with my approach on a par 5 number 13 and made put for eagle. Number 14 par 4 holed out for eagle from 76 yards. 15 par 3 hit 8 iron 18 inches from cup. 16-336 yard par 4 driver and chip to gimme range. Went on to number 3 par 5 hit driver 5 iron to a foot. Number 4 par 3 9 iron to 6 feet . Number 5 was 326 yards hit drive on the fringe lipped out eagle. Was it the ball? I don’t know but my flight and control are better than I have ever had playing any ball and trust me I have tried everyone on the market. I think these to balls fly straight with less side spin but if you are a high spin player you can spin them off the world! Try them!

My wife plays the Orange Crystal. She has a slow club head speed, so the distance is good, but the main reason is you can see these balls. My wife looses track of the ball and can not follow it as it goes down the fair way. It definitely makes the game more fun when you can watch your ball. From 150 yards away, these balls poking out of the grass is like a neon sign screaming for your attention. They are easy to find in the rough. We play almost every day and we have lost 2 in the last month.

I played today with a Srixon QStar yellow ball. This was the first time I have played a colored ball since the 60s when Wilson, I believe, had the orange balls that one of the tour players was using. I loved the feel of the ball, but they were very hard for me to find in the green grass with leaves beginning to fall. I play better than the other guys in my foursome, so I don’t think I would be afraid to tee up a “pumpkin” or a bright pink ball. I would imagine they would be very easy to see against the green grass. Given a choice, I would love to try the Volvik Vista IV.

I’ve been using a colored ball for about two years, and have gotten excellent performance. Using one does speed up play. There is never a doubt which is my ball so I’m not walking from ball to ball trying to figure out which is my white ball. I see no difference in distance from the Pro V1 that I used before and pay more at the store. Guys used to make fun of the colored balls, but I just keep out driving them and taking their money, and now some guys have switched. I’d like to try the Volvik but can’t find them locally. Hope I win a dozen! Thanks

I will see if I can buy a sleeve somewhere. My buddies who do not play well use bright yellow Wilson or other lower priced balls and I am jellous when they find them easily and you can see them from the tee box when they land.

Love the Vista iv for everything in a golf ball , I am a 5 handicapper , & have ho-ed for years with the top premium names in balls & this is a definite challenger to the big companies .
My only concern is that of durability , 1 round maximum in good condition , due to shredding ( my grooves are not that sharp), prob will not affect the pro’s as they change balls every 2 holes .
Sort this out & you have a #1 ball out there , but by sorting this issue may compromise feel etc.
small concern , but worth sorting out .
just wish they were available in the UK , bought mine on vacation in FL
Keep up the challenge Volvik !

But what amazed me was the short game performance. Chips and puts were simply better than before. Now I’m happy to know I can actually get these balls somewhere.

Volvik recently sponsored the Volvik Georgia Women’s Open at my home course. Thanks, Volvik! Each player received a dozen Volvik golf balls as part of the entry fee. I have been playing them for about three weeks now and LOVE them! It makes it so easy to see your ball flight, you can immediately know which is your ball in the fairway, they are easier to see from a distance in the rough. Also, I think I am driving the Vista IV about 10-15 yards further than I used to hit my Pro VI. About a dozen of the women at my club have started playing Volvik….I gave one a Crystal orange and she scored her career low round! She immediately went the PGA Superstore and bought a dozen! Our golf games were fun before, but now they are fun, colorful, and improved! Thanks, Volvik!

Actually, it feels like I am getting more distance with fairways and hybrids than the driver. And, I love the feel off the putter. So very easy to see. You know right away where you are in comparison to your fellow players. Usually I am further down the fairway. I am 59, and as for now, I am a Volvik player.

I played an orange ball years ago, but don’t recall the brand, and I played a yellow Q-Star for the last couple years. I went to a white Callaway Hex Bite this year because (1) I got 3 dozen from my league as a prize (2) turns out I like the ball (3) they don’t make it in yellow (or make it any more, apparently, though I can still get them at Golfsmith for $45 for 3 dozen).

I’d select the the Crystal if I win, as it probably fits my game (if indeed i have any) better – any color would be fine (even the pink!), but I’d likely go with the yellow as I think it would be best for my eyesight.

The price is a little off-putting compared to what I am playing now, but wouldn’t be so bad if I could stop losing the darn things. :-P

I play the Wilson 50 Elite in bright orange, and as a senior golfer I like the performance plus enhanced visibility in the air and on the ground. Our Army PX carries the Volvik line of balls, and I really was attracted to their brightness level…just had no idea how they’d perform for a low swing speed golfer such as I. Naturally, if I were to be awarded a dozen Volvik Crystal balls in “blaze orange”, I will write an in-depth review, and illustrated with action photos!

Thanks for the comprehensive article, by the way; it was well worth delaying hitting the sack to read in its entirety!

What a coincidence. I didn’t have any nice balls on the day of a tournament 2 days ago. I immediately just bought any balls that appealed to me. I went to the pro shop and saw the usual; pro v1s, nike pds, etc. Then I saw the Volvik crystals in a super bright green (my favorite color!). Having no idea what volvik was, I bought them because I liked the color and came with the price tag of a premium $40 (pro shop ripped me off as I found out later they usually sell for $32). THEN, I signed in where I received a sleeve of pro v1s. I played my first round with the pro vs; they worked fine as expected. Then in the second round the next day, I drove my pro v OB on the 7th hole and I knew I wouldn’t find it. I finally took out my Volvik Crystals. Having no idea how these would perform, I teed it up and I was sold. They’re like DT solos; I need to do a close comparison between the two! The feel of my Crystals are super solid. Their ball flight is very predictable and distance is incredible. These are now my go to balls.

It is good to see that Volvik are now spending more money in the US
on the promotion of better visibility designs. The colours in the Crystal
balls look quite good, the flatter looking colours of the Vista’s are ok.

The thing you will need to answer in regards to their performance when
testing these balls is ,,,do they feel like your current favourite gamer or
similar or better ?? as that is where the player take up will fly or not as
most balls are closer in overall performance today. If not lets hope Volvik
are listening to your quality feedback and will move the right way as I
believe they need to in order to find that market share that works for them.

Good luck to Volvik and I hope they keep working to make better visibility
through colour a true performance category for players to look at.

      Cheers,
      Boz

I ALWAYS use a colored ball on my home course for the first two holes (because their are always driving range balls all over and I can easily find mine) if I play the first two holes well, I keep using the ball. His drives are just as long with the volvik balls with better roll out than with Srixon Q star and their Junior ball. Not many boys are playing these in the big Junior tournaments (yet) but the Crystal line is perfect for his swing speed. Performance is the key with color being the attraction. Put them together and you have a winner!

Found a Volvik up against the driving range fence a couple of months ago (never mind why I was over there in the first place!). It was in great condition, so I played it for the next couple of holes – which turned into a few rounds, and had me searching for information about that particular ball on the Internet. Very nice performer. I didn’t see it when I purchased my last box of balls, but for the first time I purchased yellow balls (Srixon) based on my experience with the Volvik. Now, I’m sure the Volvik will start becoming more available so I’ll look for it again (although I love the Srixon too).
Oh, if I won, whichever one that blue one is in the first pic is what I’d try…

By far the best reason for playing the neon green/yellow ball for the recreational golfer is the added ease of finding your ball in the rough. I don’t know about everyone else, but the most annoying part of playing a round of golf is trying to find your ball after hitting driver… and this is especially true when you have hit what appears to be just a slightly off-line shot into the first or second cut (but certainly not OB) only to get to where you thought you saw it land and not be able to find it. Typically, the guys I play with are cool about shots like this and we call it a “Tour drop”… basically meaning that if a Tour pro had hit the same drive in the same spot, a marshal or spectator would have surely found it and therefore no strokes are penalized.

My personal favorite are the Bridgstone E6s… it’s incredible how much easier it is to see your ball in the air and in the grass/leaves/pine straw, etc.

If I had a choice, I’d try the Vista iV’s in orange.

Volvik’s actually a South Korean company, that’s why it’s been so successful on the LPGA Tour – because of all the South Korean dominance. Since I live in Korea, I’ve had numerous chances to try out Volvik golf balls (more than I can count). My grandparents insist on only using Volvik. However, launch monitor performance aside, I personally don’t like the way balls work for me for some reason. It might be the feel (I’m too used to ProV1’s and Pentas), or it might be mental (looking down at a “tour” ball that’s colored makes me FEEL like it’s gonna perform like a “distance” ball, which in turn affects my real world performance).

Now that I think of it though, the only two models I’ve tried are the Magma and Bismuth. Maybe I haven’t given them enough of a chance. I’d be more than willing to give Volvik another shot.

I’d love to try these colors! I just started gaming yellow Srixon Z-Stars and I am embracing the world of color. I’d love to test the Vista iV’s out against the Z-Stars on my home course.

I would give the Vista IV in yellow a try. I currently use the TaylorMade Penta TP5 and have tried on/off the B330 RX and Hex Black. Always fun to try new “stuff” B4 reading your article never gave the Volvik’s a passing thought.

I have played the Volvik crystal orange and loved them. Great flight and distance. Add durability and visibility to that and you have a winner. So I would go with the crystal in orange.

As a high school golfer I rarely see colored golf balls during the season. Due to that dearth of color, I’d love to be able to hustle some kids by using a Vista IV against their Pro V’s. Bring on the brightness.

I can remember the first go-round for orange and yellow balls back in the early 80’s, with Wayne Levi actually winning a tourney using an orange ball. Would love to try either ball in orange in honor of Mr. Levi, or in pink – probably leaning toward the IV’s….

Excellent write up – had not really considered these before…

Finally some serious color! They’re just so much easier to see I don’t see why every weekend warrior doesn’t use one! So much easier to spot in the woods/rough, it would speed up play.
I would play the Crystals because I am a budget consumer

I’d love to try some pink vista IV’s.

my fiance actually had an opportunity to try a box of the orange crystals and says its easily the best ball she’s played. She was on the hunt for less spin than a typical ‘ladies ball’ and did extensive trails and research with many of the balls listed in the Iron Byron testing, and her thoughts and results mirrored what was posted. She came away impressed with the overall distance, visibility and feel of the ball.

we actually played a few rounds with some strangers and they couldn’t stop asking her about the ball and where she had gotten them. i definitely think there a market of golfers looking for something a little more unique than a plain white ball, while still have all the top level performance of the big guys.

I have played the crystal white for 2 years – 3 piece ball great performer good price. Good feel but driver distance a little off- good spin not great – good all around ball.

I have thought about giving these a try. I’m certainly not opposed to the idea of a colored ball especially if it helps me spot it. I must admit, the idea of me bombing a Pink or Orange ball past some of my shorter hitting, stodgy playing partners would make me absolutely giddy.

I would try the Vista IV!

Volvik Crystal Green. That’s one bright ball! How could you miss it? I’m in for anything that speeds up pace of play in my home courses.

Many times I loose sight of the ball when the sky is overcast. I think the orange or pink Vista iV would help greatly.

I am skeptical at best to hear a ball gives you 15-20 more yards. I would enjoy trying them though. I would take the vista IV if I had a choice.

I thought the same thing, but they are more of a yellow green, with the yellow trending toward the canary hue. Both very bright and visible.

      1. I’ve not played them but I would if I could get them as inexpensively as I do used Prov1x balls.
      2. I wonder being “aesthetically loud”.. how these would fair if a company who seems to share the same style but with a slightly “bigger” name bought them and branded them as their own……the company name rhymes with shmobra.

I like to play colored balls not only for visibility but also to get a good score.. When u can see where your ball is landing from a distance you can start planning your next shot. You loose time if you have to walk to where your ball and then start planning and invariably you end up hurrying your shot.. This is particularly true where your first shot is with a driver..

I like the bright yellow ball and am currently playing the wilson duo. Wouldn’t mind trying out the volviks in the same color or the pink…

I have not played them yet, but I have played many other colored balls, and I really do prefer them over the whites just because I play from the rough and the woods a lot. Any help I can get saving strokes by finding my ball more often! Love to give them a try, the Crystal would be for me!
