More Majors Won Than Any Other Brand

By Dave Wolfe

It’s interesting how changes over time can be subtle with golf companies. We all expect golf equipment to change frequently, and we all notice when it does. At the company level though, it seems like it takes golfers a couple of years, or longer, to notice the change, and then that change usually comes as a surprise.

Image is a big deal for golf companies, and it is one that must be carefully cultured. Take Callaway’s #fiveyearwar plan of attack. The marketing people and club makers at Callaway are putting a ton of effort into letting people know all about the new Callaway. They are driving the brand away from the “for-old-golfers” perception that had settled in on the Callaway brand toward a new perception more characterized by words like innovative and exciting. Callaway is actively fighting to change golfers’ perceptions of Callaway Golf, and it seems to be working.

There are other companies working to change golfers’ perceptions as well. If the question “What golf company has won More Majors Won Than Any Other Brand?” came up during a local pub trivia night I am not sure that I would answer with Wilson Staff.

I started playing golf after the real heyday of Wilson Staff. If you did too, then you may not realize how they were the company in golf for a long time. A seriously long time.

If you are unfamiliar with the history of Wilson Staff, they have a great history page on their site HERE. As you skim though the timeline, you’ll see that it starts with big names in golf like Sneed and Sarazen, powers on through most of the 20th century. Toward the end of the 20th century though, the Wilson Staff brand seems to drop off the golf pinnacle. Maybe it was the selling of the company a couple of times. Maybe it was the fact that other competing companies like Ping and Callaway came into the market. Regardless, something happened where the Wilson Staff name did not mean what it once did. If you look at that history page, you can see that Padraig Harrington was almost solely responsible for keeping the Wilson Staff name relevant in tournament golf from 2000-2010.

Let’s bring it closer to home. Did you buy any Wilson Staff clubs in the first decade of this century?

But in the second decade of the twenty-first century, things are changing at Wilson Staff. Their clubs are improving, and people are starting to notice. Tour guys are playing them. Kevin Streelman just earned almost $400,000 with Wilson Staff clubs by finishing T3 at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions at Kapalua. In 2012, the FG Tour V2 irons were labeled as Must Demo by this very site, and during last year’s Most Wanted Driver Test, Tony called the Wilson Staff D100 driver “the perfect driver for guys who just love to hit golf balls.” I played the D100 driver a bunch last season, and I’ll attest that it’s fun (and long). Things are changing at Wilson Staff. Again, the gear is getting better.

Vizor Level 2

In every role-playing game I’ve ever played, being first level sucks. I don’t know that Wilson Staff even though of role-playing games when they named this incarnation of the Vizor “Level 2”, but that’s what it made me think of. Usually, if you survive to level two, then you get a little bit stronger, and a little bit more skilled at whatever your character is trying to do. At Level 2, you are simply better than you were at Level 1.

With the Vizor Level 2 line, Wilson has taken what was present in the original Vizor line, and refined it. The original Vizor mallet was a solid performer in our 2013 Most Wanted Mallet test, finishing in the top half of the pack with an accuracy score of 83.  What did our testers like about that Vizor? The soft insert, and the I-Lock alignment system. So what has been improved in Level 2? Well the urethane insert is now softer, the color and designs have been changed to promote a “more modern” look, and the I-Lock technology has been improved. Taking the strong points, and making them stronger seems like a solid plan.

The Big Deal: I-Lock Technology

Vizor2 Alignment

I am fairly certain that anyone looking at the Wilson Staff Vizor Level 2 putters will immediately notice the I-Lock alignment system. The concept behind the I-Lock system is that it helps the golfer to make sure that his or her eyes are in a position directly over the putter and the target line at address.  According to Wilson Staff, there are three main advantages to the I-Lock system:

  • Improves putting alignment by aiding the golfer in positioning the eyes directly over the ball and line of putt.
  • Visual reminder when eyes are over the target line for more consistent set-up, alignment and stroke.
  • Easy to understand and take from the practice green to the course.

EyeLock

So what makes this new I-Lock a Level 2 upgrade? Well, the original I-Lock system has been altered/improved in a couple of places. Again, according to Wilson Staff:

  • More open alignment “bridge” to allow additional light in for quicker and easier confirmation of being over the target line.
  • “Bridge” is now parallel (level) with the ground for a more consistent eye and address position.
  • Single color, high contrast black/white alignment system for perfect set-up.

It looks to me like the original I-Lock technology has indeed Leveled Up. They have taken what they had in the original Vizor, and improved it. But we just have their word for it, right? It’s not like they have supported the claims of the I-Lock system with data.

Supported By Data

Vizor Data

Well look at that, DATA! Now, of course, we need to remain skeptical because the data was generated by the company involved, but it is data none the less. How many times do we hear about great new innovations in golf gear that are not supported by any concrete numbers? We don’t get much information about the testing conditions, or the testers, but these two charts do make a pretty good case for the association between eye position and accuracy. 20% improvement is nothing to sneeze. A tour pro that improves 20% on the green would earn a whole lot more cash that year.
Vizor Data2

The Wilson Staff I-Lock test shows us that eye position relative to the putter and line matters, and it also serves as a diagnostic for anyone that is missing. If you are pushing your putts, maybe your eyes are too inside; pulling, too outside. What the Vizor I-Lock does is give you a simple system to know if you are inside or outside, or locked.

No, I don’t find the I-Lock to be the most attractive feature ever added to a putter. However, I find making more putts to be very attractive. I bet you do too. Dismissing functional technology based upon looks is not a solid plan. Would you, could you, with a fish

Wilson Staff Vizor Level 2 – Model 1

Wilson Staff Vizor Level 2-07

The Model 1 is the only blade in the Vizor Level 2 line-up, although some will argue that the addition of the I-Lock alignment system makes it more of a mallet than a traditional blade. I agree, it looks more mallet-like, than blade-like at address, but it really does play more like a blade while putting. It does have the design elements of the typical blade:  plumbers neck, heel-toe-weighting, and a toe-hang around 3:45-4:00.

FIT_FOR_STROKE-1-Slight

Wilson Staff Vizor Level 2 – Model 2

Wilson Staff Vizor Level 2-20

The Model 2, and the Model 3, are definitely mallets. With the Model 2, we get a rounded visual that reminds me a bit of the bottom of a 2-Ball. Obviously, the I-Lock again is the dominant visual feature, but the other design elements, like being face-balanced as a result of the double bend shaft, will make the Model 2 very comfortable for the straight stroking putter.

FIT_FOR_STROKE-1-straight

Wilson Staff Vizor Level 2 – Model 3

Wilson Staff Vizor Level 2-32

The Model 3 is another face-balanced mallet, but this one is a bit more angular than the Model 2 and because of that, it may fit the eye of some golfers better than that more rounded Model 2 head. Play-wise, I personally found the Model 2 more to my liking, but I’m hard pressed to explain why. Both set up to the ball the same with the I-Lock, and both have identical urethane inserts. Maybe it’s a little weight distribution difference, maybe it’s geometry. I guess what I’m telling you is to roll both and make your own decision. They are different…

FIT_FOR_STROKE-1-straight

Wilson Staff Vizor Level 2 – Model 4

Wilson Staff Vizor Level 2-23

I love putters that are easily weaponizable. Hone the edges of those wings and you have a tool to make putts with and then defend yourself with when the zombies storm your course. Wilson Staff describes the Model 4 as Aggressive Mallet with Center Shaft Design. I like the word aggressive for the Model 4. I may have mentioned before that the Odyssey Sabertooth is one of my all-time favorite putters. It still gets game time when the putter review queue is light. This Model 4 reminds me of the Sabertooth, but the center-shaft, and the I-Lock technology make the Model 4 its own entity as well. This one is definitely my favorite one in the line.

FIT_FOR_STROKE-1-straight

Moving in the Right Direction

So is the Wilson Staff brand moving in the right direction? I think that they are. I can say that these putters are better than the previous Vizors. The aesthetics on these Vizor Level 2 putters still may not be to your liking, but they do find the hole. The Model 3 and Model 4 are taking part in the 2014 Most Wanted Mallet test, and I have already had one tester email me about where he could buy one. Read into that what you will…

When thinking about the status of Wilson Staff in 2014, ask yourself the following question: Are there any Wilson Staff clubs that I would like to demo and maybe game from the current line-up?

Here’s my answer:

  • FG Tour M3 Driver
  • FG Tour M3 Fairways & Hybrid
  • FG Tour M3 Irons or new C100 irons
  • FG Tour TC Wedges
  • Nexus Stand Bag (2014’s MGS Most Wanted Carry Bag)
  • 2014 Wilson Staff FG Tour Ball

That looks a lot like a whole bag of Wilson Staff clubs. The only reason I didn’t list a putter is that I don’t actually get to play one putter for a season, or even many back to back rounds. Regardless, I don’t think that there is a year in recent history when I would have been able to put together such an expansive list of Wilson Staff gear. I think that means something. Granted, I’m just one guy, but if I’m noticing what is going on with Wilson Staff equipment, then I bet others are noticing as well. Will Wilson Staff ever return to its previous spot at the top of golf market, who knows? However, it seems like they are moving in the right direction.

I tested the eye-lock system at the local golf superstore. I was having lots of challenges with putting consistency, or lack thereof. The eye-lock system attracted my curiosity, and a trial. After sinking 10 of 10 on the putting mat, I’m seriously considering one of these putters.

Great article and a good review.

I went and had ago with the m3 and m4 today as I’m currently looking for a new putter. The alignment feature didn’t just catch my eye it opened them. I hadn’t really realised how much movement I had in my stroke but after a few goes with these two id practically got rid of it. The alignment is so easy to use it straightens you out and gets your head right over the ball it seems to work perfectly for me! For me the m4 was the one but is was a close run thing with the m3 and I’ll probably have a go with both again before I actually purchase something.

I’m not a big golfer but this club actually excited me, it might sound stupid but it felt like it would reduce my score straight away. I can’t wait to get one in my bag!

Have tried the mallet style Visor [Level 2/Model 2] – great feel from the softer urethane face and whilst it takes a bit of patience to get used to, the aim/sight line procedure does pay dividends. My putting results pattern correlated closely to the results as depicted.

I like the fact that they made a center shafted normal lenth putter. I have used a center shafted old style Wilson brass putter that gives a high pitched ting when struck correctly. I would love to try one out, but where I live I have not seen any in the local golf stores. The eyelock technology looks like it would be a great improvement for many amatuers along with the professionals.

I mentioned this elsewhere but I had the chance to demo the original Visor and the Level 2 (I believe it was #2) recently. I liked the alignment idea but version 1 didn’t do it for me. Felt heavy and feel with the ball off the face didn’t inspire confidence. A whole different story with level 2.
LOOKS more high end in quality and design. But more importantly, the combo of midsize grip, softer insert and new head felt very good. I did an A/B test with the 2 levels and the new one was far more easy to dial in both distance and accuracy wise. Wilson has been upping their game for the last few years. They’ve wisely De-emphasized some of their lower lines and are concentrating on the D100 and FG lines with improved product. The new FG Tour Ball is a winner also.

I am an old school guy so I really want Wilson to gain ground. That being said, I was pleasantly surpised when demoing their irons last year. I have never changed putters since 1985 but this is the putter (Model1) that could put me over the top. I really like the idea of taking the guess work out of lining up. Would like to be 20% more accurate! Great job Wilson.

As a previous poster said I got a chance to put one in my hands last week while participating in the Mallet test with Dave. First, I absolutely love the alignment system. Simple and easy to use as well as being accurate. I’ll preface my next comment by saying that I’ve never been a big fan of inserts in putters be they blades or mallets.just something about the feel of the ball coming off the face doesn’t do it for me. That being said, I loved how the ball felt coming off this putter. The putter felt great in my hands from the first putt. This is a putter I would definitely put in my bag no questions asked. Especially at the price point it’s at.

If I were going to buy one it would be the model 4 and for the same reason that Dave said. I like the ability to “weaponise” it. :-P The course I mostly play at has a couple of families of bobcats, tones of turkeys and several deer that make the course home. Just think I could play a round of golf AND take home dinner. Anyone know if I need to purchase deer tags to hunt them with a putter?

Seriously, (do I get points for tapping into Wilson’s marketing) Anything that makes the game easier for a high handicap golfer like myself, that just doesn’t have the time or to be honest the inclination to spend hours on the putting green practicing is a big plus in my book. And this alignment system does just that.

Oh, and by the way the aesthetics don’t bother me at all that’s never been a reason for me to buy or not buy anything golf related.

This isn’t a new idea. The first place I saw it was in the Ray Cook tunnel vision putters a couple years ago. Seems like Wilson borrowed Ray’s idea. Wilson’s putters look way better than the monstrosity Ray Cook was trying to sell though.

Great article! I have been using a Odyssey Dual Force Rossie II brass mallet since it became available eons ago. It has served me well. I use a straight back straight through style of putting stroke and spend alot of my practice putting time on alignment and making sure that my eyes are over the ball. I do go through some spells when my putts are consistantly right or left of my intended line. I have my foursome watch me putt when I go through one of these spells and they don’t see any pull-push or loop. After reading about the Wilson Visor alaignment guide I think I may have found the cause and cure for my problem. The Visor Level 2-Model 2 I think is the answer for the club I need and I would be happy to get one.

then pray they have two, one for my bag and one for practice in house. (It’s not easy to align a 3 wood for your putter when you ran out and left the only putter against the wall at home.)

I have always loved the look and feel of Wilson golf equipment since the old staff line when I started caddying back in 1962. The Wilson name has always been associated with the Chicago area. But I will be damned if you can find places near by to buy their equipment. they seemed to have given up on selling product in the States and appear to be a bigger player in the other world markets. how the heck did that happen from a name that originally was a leader of sporting goods years ago in this country??

As a big fan of Wilson Staff, I am excited to see the innovation they are putting into their new products. I am a big fan of center shafted, funky looking putters, so the obvious choice for me would be the #4 model. I believe the I-lock system will work to ensure a consistent setup. But I do agree with an earlier poster that I wish there were lie angle options. I putt best with shorter, upright putters. My guess is these sit around 72*, when I would prefer 74/75*. I would be interested in demoing this and seeing how my eyes would line up in my natural stance with the flatter than preferred lie angle.

I have read that a pretty high number of misses result from poor eye alignment due to standing too close or too far away. The adjustments are simple after the fact but having the I Lock is really handy to make that adjustment BEFORE the miss rather than after that opportunity is already gone and also without the last second doubts clogging up your mind while standing over the ball.

Would love to try #1 or #2 in my bag!

I am also planning on trying the Wilson Duo balls this spring. Sounds like a really good combintation of distance and spin. I had been playing Titleist NXT Tour S and was pretty happy with gaining 1 club of distance on my irons over the PRO V and keeping soft feel. If I could get that feel and distance with just a touch more spin for some more agressive wedge shots that would be ideal and the DUO golf balls sounds like they may actually have that. Pretty tough to find a bad review of the Duo.

Would love to hear any experiences with comparing these if anyone has them.

I’m not a good putter at all and though I have been getting better with practice, an alignment aid like this would probably help tremendously. It’s foolproof and I like that it’s backed up with any data (though more would be even better). Right now I’m using a TPM 6 that I had regripped and it feels great. Whether it rolls great or not depends largely on my concentration and confidence at any given moment on the green. Whether I win or not I’d be curious to see how this model works for people who have the chance to try it.

Out on the course I find it hard to determine the position of my stance, especially when putting. While I consider myself a feel putter, having actual visual feedback on the position of my body, would mean a tremendous boost in confidence, that should be very valuable to putting with feel.

So in other words, the i-Lock system sounds very promising, wish some retailers in my area would sell these putters.

If I like these two things I will work with my putter in practice and then feel confident when I pull it out of the bag on the course. I think all of us have a few club makers that we love and favor, a few we hate and refuse to try, and a bunch that we overlook and don’t bother to even consider. But every so often, one of those overlooked companies does a few things that causes us to sit up and take notice. For me, Wilson is that company right now.

They’ve done about four things in a row that cause me to say “Don’t overlook them anymore.” I like the look of the FG Tour driver and it has an adjustable hosel, their Urethane ball deserves a poke or two, I like the way they clearly segment their products into three easy to understand player types, and now these putters. I spent several months using mirrors and various putting tools because my pro identify a flaw in my eye-line over the putter that I couldn’t see. These would have highlighted that flaw in two seconds.

      UPDATE:

Am I wrong or are these visors all DETACHABLE?! It looks like they are and I can find no mention of that fact in the article. If so, they just shot way up in my interest list.

Also, I think it should be mentioned that when adjusting your eye line, it’s important to set the club flat and MOVE YOUR HEAD, not cant the “roll” plane of the putter with your hands (from toe up to toe down etc.). The goal is get your hands shoulders and grip in the right place for a good stroke, and this may require more extensive fitting with shaft adjustments, then get your eyes in the right place over the clubhead.

New innovations are usually awesome. So is this new I-Lock! Customizing golf clubs is very important, because we are all so diffirent from each other. Customizing a putter is in my opinion even more important than a driver because in every 18-hole round of golf we stroke just 13-15 shots with the driver but over 30 strokes with the putter. Many guys sometimes over 40 strokes. Customizing your putter let’s these “40” guys be at the 30 digits.

I really think the Wilson Staff Vizor Level 2 – Model 4 caught my eye. Mostly because it looks like an attack helicopter so it kinda looks bad ass and dangerous! With this kind of putter I really would feel confident and would definetly attack for the putts. Look so cool!

The alignment idea seems sound. I would think that I might prefer a white line indicator of perfect setup, versus the all-black indication they have, to create a better flow from the line drawn on my ball. I also like the softer urethane insert. The putter heads overall are a little “busy” looking, but if they get the job done who cares! Good to see Wilson Staff back in the game.

If you start sinking more putts that’s a bonus. It’s the individual’s technique that gets the ball in the hole. Don’t get me wrong, I’d try it in a heartbeat and would be happy to get one.

The one that appeals to me is the Model 1. Similar to a 2-Ball Blade 2 that I used for a while.

What I don’t see in your article is any discussion about lie angle’s effect on this alignment aid. It would seem to me that lie angle would have to be absolutely perfect for this alignment aid to work. For example, a lie that’s too upright will tilt the toe of the putter into the air and cause the putter head to be further way from the person with the alignment “locked” than the actual optimal position should be. The opposite would be true for situations where the putter is too flat.

The solution seems stupidly simple to me and that’s an adjustable neck. Wilson can feel free to pay me $1 million for this idea. With an adjustable neck and a plumb bob dangling from between your eyes, you could set your putter up exactly perfect and then lock the neck into place at the correct angle. Combine this with PING’s adjustable length idea and you’ve got a putter that you can make perfect with very minimal effort.

Love the looks of the entire WS Vizor Level Two line.Instead of blowing up a good idea and starting over they refined the material and the look to appeal to the better golfer. Awesome update that blends with the entire 2014 lineup.

I’m very interested in this new alignment technology…and I need all the help I can get. I like Model 3 the best.

Super article. Great looking putter line from Wilson. Concept for alignment is very innovative!
