RANKED: Top Equipment Companies On The PGA Tour

We’re all familiar with the claims; #1 Driver in Golf (TaylorMade), the #1 Ball in Golf (Titleist)…with enough creativity, everyone is #1 at something. Equipment companies also like to trade on player rankings as well. Did you know that the current top 2 players in the world play TaylorMade, or that 5 of the current top 14 (use of non-standard numbers is a common ploy to boost percentages) golfers in the world are Callaway staffers?

Several weeks ago we posted a tweet with a quick tally of the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) broken down by primary equipment sponsor (the company that can claim a given player is on their staff – usually it’s the name on the hat). The popularity of the tweet caught us by surprise, so we decided to display the rankings on the site.

With 3 of the 4 Majors in the books, here is a chart showing how the golf equipment companies rank based on the number of Top 25 golfers in the OWGR.

Notes:

  • Charl Schwartzel moved from Nike to PXG immediately before The Open Championship. That change (PXG +1/ Nike -1) is reflected in the chart.
  • Titleist balls are used by 10 of the top 25. Callaway and TaylorMade are next at 4 apiece.
  • Trending indicator is based on previous rank, not player count.

Callaway may be on top as far as the Pros go but their quality to the public is a joke.Buy you a set of clubs off the rack then have the lofts and lies checked then you will see

Seems like a silly list…the companies that pay the most players are at the top and the companies with the smallest staff are at the bottom.

      25 balls = 10 Titleist + 4 callaway + 4 Taylormade + 7 others
What is “7 others” – I thought Srixon would have been worth a mention here?

i would not use a club unless I liked it or felt good about it . I think Minuzo make the best irons on the market , but thye are close to the botom of the list, but dod not pay to many staffers

I play with integra clubs, not their clones but their original designs. They serve me well, I could not care less what the top golfers use.

Can you do a study on pros based on average ranking before and after switching between sponsors?

If you purchase your sticks because of what a pro games, you are doing it wrong.

I play a Bridgestone Driver, Tour Edge 3&5 wood, Adams Hybrid, Bridgestone Irons, Edel wedges and a Scotty putter but game a Nike Ball. I don’t get paid to game anything so I’d rather play a bag that fits me more than one brand because Day or Spieth or Rory game it.

Interesting but doesn’t influence what I buy. Performance with my swing is important; not how well some millionaire does with the equipment….

Interesting that Titleist balls are not as dominating in the top 25. All of them are great balls though.
I would think this list is affected by how much money each company has to sponsor the best touring pros. It would be interesting to get personal opinions from the pros on which clubs they would play if no money is involved. It will never happen though.
I saw somewhere that Tom Lehman is still using a TaylorMade R7 driver because he hasn’t found anything better. With the COR limit that isn’t surprising.

A survey on shafts would be interesting too. There are probably so many models from each manufacturer that it would more confusing than enlightening.

I think it’s a list of clubs the player uses, not the balls..

Does the Sponsor (name on the hat) match the driver, iron, putter or ball used? It’d be interesting to dive further into full bag vs sponsor. Pretty convoluted but would shed more light on #1 “played” driver, #1 “played” iron, #1 ” played” putter, #1 “played” ball….etc.

This is a pretty disappointing article, to be honest. One infographic doesn’t tell the story you claim to tell. This should be broken down by driver, ball, etc. not an asterisk with a note about balls. Ok – 10 of the top 25 use Titleist. Which 10? 1-10, 2-12?

Surely you can do better than this.
