Where Are They Now? (RIFE PUTTERS)

Where is Rife?

Remember the name Guerin?  How about Rife?

Erase them both out of your memory. Immediately.

I’ll give you a second…

NEW NAME: EVNROLL

Guerin Rife, the man behind the name and putters has lots of reasons for wanting the names forgotten (we’ll get in to that later).  First we want to discuss the fact that he’s back in the business.  He’s been keeping a low profile of late, hell we didn’t even know about this one.

Nevertheless, here we are.  An actual launch at the PGA Show, that doesn’t happen often anymore.

What you need to know for the moment is that Guerin Rife (AKA:EVNROLL) knows a thing or two about grooves.  He showed me a video that I think you are going to want to see referring to his grooves and what they can do for you.

Remember the PING Ketsch?  The most dominant performing putter we have ever tested.  Well, I think it might actually have some competition (EVNROLLin this years 2016 Most Wanted Putter Test.

Until the test…

My Uncle was seriously looking at putters We were right next to EVNROLL at the PGA Show and never went over…Now I wished we had. Other then red, putter seems interesting…I’m one of those who does feel $329 is expensive for a putter. But when you think about it, most of us use it 28-38 times a round. Drivers are $299-$499 and are only used a max of 14 times a round. So I guess manufacturers feel they should charge that much…Just my thoughts though.

I would recommend that everyone commenting head over to Bobby Grace’s web site and watch his video on why his putters with grooves are better than the other brand name putters. I’ve used many of his putters and they seem to put the best roll on the ball. Give them a shot you won’t regret it.

OK, I agree with all the comments. But then I watched the video on their website, and I am intrigued.

But then I realized no left-handed putters.

Of course the Ketsch will have competition when you make an almost identical replica and paint it a different color… groves? he’s a few years behind…

So does this mean that Guerin putters will no longer be made? I know that the original Rife putter company was bought by another firm and still makes putters, but GR started a new company called Guerin Putters. Will this go away in favor of Evnroll Putters or are they just another style putter from the company. This is way too confusing to follow.

I’m a mechanical genius and here is what I think. The three most important factors in putting a pure roll on a golf ball are these. 1- Friction 2- loft 3 solid contact. Lets talk about all 3 starting with friction. The best putter face would be one that would allow not grip the ball but immediately allow the surface of the ball to slide up the face as it begins to roll. This would negate the effects of backspin and allow the ball to begin rolling ASAP. Grooves are counter productive. What I would like to know is why a putter manufacturer has not thought of this and come out with a putter insert that creates the least amount of friction with the surface of the ball. Loft- The perfect amount of loft at the moment of a strike in the putter face would be one that would make the ball immediately begin to roll without skidding. This would vary depending upon the ” stickiness” of the putting surface and the consistancy of the angle put on the putter face by any given player. The last thing you want is for the ball to be struck with a negitive loft, in essence pounding it into the ground. An absolute perpendicular 90 deg. angle with a slick putter face insert would be optimal but a slight loft is nesseccary to prevent from ever having a negitive loft at impact. Solid impact- The more forgiving a putter is the less an off-center strike will affect the direction of the ball. We don’t always strike the ball in the absolute center of the face. a putter with a large “sweet spot” are going to impart a lot less deviation from the desired path of roll. There are many other factors in giving yourself the best chance to make a putt. Here are a few of my other observations. Putter weight is critical to any given player. A player with a quick swing pace must have a lighter putter so that the weight of the putter doesnt place an unmanageable amount of leverage on the hands, breaking down the wrists. we all know that a light grip is best for accuracy and control. If you have to grip to tightly to prevent your wrists from breaking down during your stroke, your putter is to heavy! Alignment- Whatever you have to do to your body to put a consistant stroke on the ball that gets the face square, making solid contact and moving directly down the target line……do it! Only practice will teach you this. Everyone is different. Aim- I prefer putters that have a line extending down the aim point that is perpendicular to the aiming point The longer the the better. It makes it very easy to align the putter. Once the putter is lined up, adjust your body to whaere the putter sits. I prefer mallot putters for this reason but there a few that are light enough for my stroke. Shaft length- I prefer to put with my arms mostly extended. I’m 6 feet tall. I crouch more than most but my putter is still only 30 inches long. They don’t sell putters that are 30 inches long. Most players I’ve seen, especially shorter guys, are playing with a putter that is way to long! Remember what I said about the leverage and weight? The shorter a putter is, the more weight you can have without your wrists breaking down during the stroke. Conclusion- There are so many factors that really matter besides the putter that determine the desired outcome of making a putt. It’s far more about the soldier than the gun and most guns aren’t sold to match the soldier. Yours probalby needs to be altered and altering your putter will probably render far greater results than buying a new gun. Be your own doctor, practice and alter your putter to fit you. My putter is an old Carbite GZ mallet. It has 3 parallel alighnment lines perpendicular to the face. It has a brass insert that I keep absolutely smooth and waxed! It’s made of aluminum wirh cobalt inserts at both ends of the face so it is light and has a large sweet spot. It’s ;lofted at 3 degrees because my hands are pressed slightly forward at impact. It’s relatively light, much light that the vast majotity of mallet putters available on the market today. The shaft is 30 inches long and I use a corded Lamken grip so that I can grip it softly with my hands and not wrestle with the weight trying to break down my hands. I make a lot of putts. I’m deadly inside 8 feet on good rolling greens and I hardly ever 3 putt. I make a lot of putts, i’M A great PUTTER!

      Mechanical genius?????? LOL

“The best putter face would be one that would allow not grip the ball but immediately allow the surface of the ball to slide up the face as it begins to roll. ” This would create backspin. You want the clubhead moving up on the ball, not the the ball moving up face. Putters have positive loft. If the ball rolls up the clubface, that means the ball has backspin. “This would negate the effects of backspin and allow the ball to begin rolling ASAP.” – so that’s wrong.

“Grooves are counter productive. What I would like to know is why a putter manufacturer has not thought of this and come out with a putter insert that creates the least amount of friction with the surface of the ball.” Because they have done tests and know what you are saying is just flat-out wrong! If you are hitting up on the back of the ball, the friction between the ball and the back of the club will, if anything, aid in topspin – not destroy it. The putter is moving up; you want the back of the ball moving up – why would you want it to slip and roll up the face? You don’t. You want them moving in the same direction!

I appreciate your humbleness regarding your genius both mechanically and on the putting green.

Bry, the putter face creates backspin. If you look at any high speed video of the moment of impact in a putter stroke you will see clear evidence that the putter always creates backspin. Think about it again. The typical putter has a few degrees of loft. That in itself will create backspin. Look at the ball position of most golfers, especially the pros. The ball is positioned slightly ahead of center and at impact their hands are slightly ahead of or right on top of the ball. The putter is not rising at the point of impact and even if it was it would still create backspin. So, there are two oposite forces acting on the ball at impact. The backspin of the ball created by the club opposes the top spin that the friction between the ground and ball creates. Is essence, the ball is pinched at impact. We can’t negate the friction between the ball and the ground but by creating a slick surface on the putter face we can negate minimize the backspin allowing the greater force of the grass to allow the ball to begin rolling quicker. Grooves do the opposite of what is preferred.

That’s interesting. Everything I have seen recommends playing the ball ahead of center in order to hit the ball with an ascending blow in order to crate topspin (or lessen the degree of backspin). This is what is causing our disagreement. If the ball was being hit on the descent, then, yes, you would want a slick surface. If you’re hitting it on the ascent like I’ve been led to believe (doesn’t mean it’s correct), the you want friction to help with the topspin. Check out table 2 (page 8) of this study reference angle of attack:

I apologize for being degrading. It was a bit unwarranted. The cocky feeling I got from your post spurred me on. I’m sure you didn’t mean to convey it as so.

Think of it this way. If it were legal, the best way to get the ball rolling off of a putter would be to put a thin coat of patrolium jelly on the putter face. If you like, try it the next time you go to the practice green. Just don’t do it in the course of play because like I said, it’s illegal. And by the way, it’s ok not to agree with someone but it’s not ok to be degrading towards people. Civilized people disagree without being disagreeable and don’t resort to insults. I”m just providing information that 40 years of life experience and golf experience have taught me. Take it for what it is and move on. In the end all I know is this, I’m a GREAT PUTTER!

I can’t understand dropping $300 plus on putters. No reason to drop that coin on a putter especially. I have had dozens over the years and all brands, I actually currently play a Rife and love it. Roll is phenomenal, lighter than I would like so I want to play with a Ketsch for a little while cause I think I would like the heavier feel. Paid $49 for my Rife brand new, spent $25 adding a grip and counterweight. Snedeker uses a 15 year old Rossi putter, does 15 years of “technology” not appeal to him or is this a perfect case of “its not the wand, its the magician”.

This is a joke…the is a ping ketsch that’s been spray painted…how can a new putter company think that the formula for success is to copy one putter from odyssey(7) and one from ping…I know they have an anser style blade as well and im not even talking about that…but then they also charge over 300 for each….Great design Guerin…rofl

MMM, and while he may like his name forgotten there is still a Rife company selling putters by that name with the roll groove technology.

My understanding it the “old” Rife company was bought be someone in Washington state and the company is now located in Bellevue, Washington. Website is rifegolf.com. I was just at a demo of the putters last week. They are still very nice putters.

OK, watched the short video on the website. As a marketing tool, that looks pretty cool. MGS, now it’s up to tell me, is it real? I love my Ketsch Heavy, I need to know if this is better!

Although, at $325 US, that is a steep upgrade price here in Canada. It’s going to have to be significantly better than a $229 Ketsch.

Being completely honest, I thought the same thing. I was walking the how floor and saw the red putter and went wow that is an exact copy of the PING Ketsch. I looked up and there was Guerin Rife.

That being said, I think there is an interesting story behind the hold similar look. Hope to bring it out soon. Or maybe Guerin will chime in with his side.
