SPY PICS – 2016 Wilson Staff FG Tour and C-200 Irons

Are you a Wilson Golf fan?

We know Wilson Staff is working on some exciting things in the iron category. Late last year Wilson’s Director of R&D, Mike Vrska had this to say about the prototype iron his team was working on:

“I know we’re going to have to have some conversations with the USGA, which is a fun conversation because it means we’re pushing the envelope. Some of the CT rules for irons, we’re going to have to look at.” – Michael Vrksa, Wilson Golf

Fast-forward 9 or so months later and one of our spies snapped this picture of what we believe are Wilson Staff’s next generation FG Tour (V5?) and C-Series (C200 to be specific) irons (alongside the current FG Tour 100 blade.

As we reported in Our Series of Wilson Golf Articles last year, while the company isn’t the powerhouse it once was, it’s moving in the right direction.

Does one of the irons pictured feature the sort of break-through technology that Mike Vrska hinted at? We’ll know soon enough.

You Tell Us

Have your perceptions of Wilson Staff over the last few seasons? Are you more likely to consider Wilson irons than you have in the past? Would a significant tech break-through change your opinion?

I think WIlson are in for a super year. I have gone from the Bridgestone J40 dpc’s to the new Wilson C200 irons. I live in Australia and they have been released here.

Admittedly these will never feel like the J40’s, but then again not many irons ever will. I from my brief session with these the feel i would describe as crisp. when you hit these out of the centre you definitely feel the ball spring off the face.

Since getting married I have not been able to play much golf and was struggling a little with the J40’s. The C200 seem like they are a lot more forgiving in a package that is still relatively attractive to the eye.

I got a good price for these in Aus and they threw in the new F5 hybrid for free.

There is no doubt that Wilson Staff is back on track. Due to the efforts and trust from the Parent Company to get Wilson back to the TOP of the mountain . The efforts from Tim Clarke and Mike Verska have been outstanding . By the way Verska was with Wilson left went to Adams then TM bought them and Verska came back Home to Wilson, thank goodness. They listened to the public and with a tiny budget are building the Brand” WILSON STAFF” to get back to where it has a increasingly strong presence due to good decisions in marketing and design.. They are following the plan to the 2 year cycle of equipment where others have not . The profit is on the rise where others like “C” “TM” have large sales but are not as profitable to the point one is up for sale . I believe WilsonStaff will be” King of The Mountain” once again due great designs/engineering and smart business management, so get onboard and “Ride the Tide” be the Future! I have with V2 irons, D200 driver , wedges , putter, ball FG tour.
The Wilson Equipment is liken to the Hemi Cuda and the Boss Mustangs , Thunder Bolts of the sixties! Ooops telling my age again. I have tried all their clubs for 016 and not doubt they are on track .The C200’s will be the Club of The Year, the F5 line is super, the driver is long and straight, the irons fly with a powerful smack!

You guys, it’s called advertising. It’s been going on since the dawn of time. Obviously, don’t ever go out and buy stuff based solely on reviews. Go get fitted and hit them to figure out if it works for you or not. The only objectivity you will get is MGS and their data backed processes. Everything else is just hearsay and conjecture.

I admit it. I am confused. I was under the impression that the topic was the new Wilson releases. How did it turn into a diatribe against THP? Dam these rabbit holes.

So, this year I bought new irons. First I hit alot of different irons – Titleist AP1714, Callaway Hot and Big Bertha, Ping, Adams and then I hit the Wilson C100’s. My first choice would have been the Titleist, I’m not going to lie. If my budget for golf increases over the next couple of years, I’ll buy some. Reality is, I’m a 14 handicapper who plays a couple of times a week, when I’m lucky, and I don’t have the better part of a grand to drop on irons. The C100’s offered solid feedback and allow you to shape a shot to some extent if you want to. I did regrip them immediately as I like an oversized wrap. Even with a change in grip, I still get good feel and feedback from them. The ball flies well on off-center hits and really flies when you catch the center of the sweet spot. I only wish they’d bring back the C:25 Wilson Staff ball. With a swing speed around 108, tops, hitting a C:25 with a C100 is a beautiful thing. The newer grooves are able to bite into that softer cover and the 3 piece construction with lower compression results in short shots that fly high and stick on the green. Longer irons jump off the clubface resulting in good distance.

I hope Wilson stays on this path as they seem to be making the kinds of products golfers look to as best of breed a little more than a generation ago.

I’m sorry you’ve never been this happy about a golf equipment purchase. I do not now, nor have I ever worked for any sporting goods company. I’m 56, been playing since I was 10 and I have proudly worked for the country’s largest grocery traditional retailer for the past 37 years.

Two years ago I bought the W/S Ci9 irons and was so pleased that within the past 6 mos I purchased a set of the FG Tour Forged irons. They are as sweet as any clubs I have ever used and I would not hesitate to play them for the next several years. Yesterday I received the W/S Nexus stand bag and it is top quality . So, I say bring it on W/S and let the world know that you are for real again. BTW- The DUO Spin ball is no slouch either and they feel so good on the irons.

Way back in the day when I wrote golf reviews for the now defunct epinions site, I used to bang the drums hard for underdogs Nickent and Wilson Staff. I played the clubs I preached as well. My bag was Nickent woods and hybrids with Wilson Irons. I used to enjoy taking my buddies for a ride after they drank the TaylorMade, Calllaway Kool Aid, and busted their wallets as well as their scorecards. For the past several years I’ve been playing Adams Woods and Irons. Now that their head designer is over at Wilson Staff, I may end up going back there to Wilson next iron set.

I miss my Wilson CI-7 irons I sold off this year. Wilson really does a good job balancing distance with consistency and performance. I will take a good look at these irons next year.

I agree with Andy and Berniez40. Wilson has represented a great value in golf over the course of the past 5 plus years. Competitive equipment at a nice price point, much like Adams used to be. It’s a good niche and a nice place to be.

I currently bag the C100 and even though I’m not a huge fan of their look they perform as advertised, high launch, some forgiveness but also some workability and good distance. They are ideal for a better player who’s a bit older and looking to recapture a little of that old magic or a mid capper who needs some help.

I’m hopeful that the new C200 will have a cleaner look than the old one, perhaps a bit more player iron type look and a tad less offset on the middle irons.

I think Wilson has to step up their marketing. Edwin Watts still has FG Tour V2s on display on their one small rack in the store and Golf Smith has no Wilson irons unless you ask around or dig through the demo bin. At least that’s the case in Kansas City. As far as making a comeback just give them a try.
Adams Golf made some of the best equipment over the last ten years glad to see some of their people at Wilson. I hope all you guys that liked Adams take a longer look at Wilson gear.
Why do I like Wilson so much? Because I’m 60 and I still like to break out my Staff blades from 1980 from time to time some of the finest and best looking clubs ever made. The more healthy golf companies the better.

I’d consider Wilson. Now that Adams is dead and they have their chief designer I gotta but clubs from someone and its never going to be from Cally or TM. My CMBs and a12 pros are fantastic but won’t last forever.

THP is a sucker site that is ruled by all things callaway so I stopped taking anything they say serious along time ago. MGS is probably one of the better reviewing sites but definitely needs to do more than just drivers! Would love to see a hybrid, iron test even if it’s not as involved as the drivers. As far as Wilson I don’t see it getting turned around and that really sucks to say.

Agreed Joe, that site has all the objectivity of a New York Yankee’s fan club. Incredible cult of personality where everyone seems to have never had a friend before joining the site and now are all about to enter into man on man love relationships.

I had said the same thing a few years ago about them favoring Cleveland. They roasted me. I stopped going there because of the bias. I am sure as the site became more popular and advertising bigger that their “favorites” would shift. I don’t hate the golf companies, I just hate when a site starts favoring because of advertising.

THP has obvious ties with Callaway and it shows in the reviews and constant Callaway pushing. That’s not what frustrates me about the site tho. The most frustrating part is if u have differing views on anything they all gang up on u at the same time. Everyone kisses the main group of guys butts and they all back each other up in the petty little arguments. If ur not one of the “boys” at THP u will never enjoy ur time there.

Your pessimistic opinion was obviously WRONG! Wilson Staff has been putting out extraordinary equipment since this review was posted 5-6 years ago. In fact, I will put the Wilson Staff 2019/2020 Iron offerings up against ANY other OEM’s ‘in the industry! (C300 & C300 forged, D7 & D7 forged, FG V6, Staff Blades,
      C-100, C-200, etc.)

Ah no John, what I don’t like is pushing crap product in the hands of high handicappers who would gush over anything that would get the ball in the air. I’m all for capitalism. I’m not in favor of false flag opinion sites. The sheep think they are getting the best of the best put in front of them when they are only getting what the highest bidder paid to take over the site for the latest trip or giveaway. Amazes me that most of those fools can’t see what is taking place.

Short of seeding the TheHackersParadise of product to elicit kool aide drinking reviews, I see this dying a miserable death at the check out counter. That site has become quite good as becoming a front for the OEM’s to shill.
