TaylorMade Announces SLDR White. . .Seriously

Written By: Tony Covey

How do you improve the #1 Driver on Tour?

You could make it more adjustable. You could offer a bevy of zero upcharge shaft options. You could make it sound and feel better.

You could even make it longer.

Or, using the TaylorMade logic, you could make it available in a second color.

Seriously. That’s what TaylorMade is going with. SLDR is now better because of an alternative paint scheme.

TaylorMade is calling the White SLDR The Other #1 Driver.

I thought that was Callaway’s Big Bertha.

If I had written this article two and half weeks ago, none of you would have any trouble believing that today’s announcement that TaylorMade will be releasing a Limited Edition version of their SLDR driver was just another in a growing line of killer MyGolfSpy April Fools gags.

I assure you it’s not.

The SLDR White is real. This is happening.

The only thing that’s surprising about the SLDR White is that it took TaylorMade this long to do it.

Rumor Becomes Reality

Rumors of the SLDR White date all the way back to 2013 (soooo long ago, right?). Well ahead of the PGA show we hear rumors – I’d almost call them confirmations – from two separate credible sources that TaylorMade would be announcing SLDR White at the PGA Show. Wouldn’t that have been something? Almost nobody of any repute announcing anything at the show anymore.

When I started digging for answers late last year, TaylorMade representatives were understandably cagey about the topic. And while nobody has really come clean on the topic, my belief is that TaylorMade had every intent of announcing the driver at the PGA show, but ultimately decided to push it back. Whether the delay was to clear the stage for Hack Golf or to simply wait for a more necessary or advantageous time to push forward, would be speculative on my part.

Since I don’t have any problem speculating, I’m going to suggest it was probably a little bit of both.

sldr-big2

What is SLDR White?

Fortunately, TaylorMade has made this particular section insanely easy to write.

SLDR White is exactly the same as the existing SLDR. It’s available in the same lofts (9.5°, 10.5°, 12°, and 14°). The stock shaft is exactly the same (Fujikura Speeder 57), which explains why the price point is exactly the same ($399) too. You still need to #LoftUp.

What’s different…in fact the only thing that’s different, is the color of the paint.

“The white crown with black button-back delivers a remarkable appearance at address. Many golfers fell in love with white when it came out in 2011, and now we are delivering a limited edition white SLDR with low and forward CG for more distance when you loft up.” – Brian Bazzel, Sr. Director of Metalwood Product Creation

Now in fairness, offering up a different colorway and calling it Limited isn’t exclusively a TaylorMade thing. Cobra has done it for the last several years. Generally Cobra’s releases appear more purposeful (Orange like Rickie, or Green to celebrate a Major Championship), they often upgrade the shaft, and generally Cobra is pretty forthcoming about how many they’ve actually produced, but the ultimate purpose is basically the same.

Golf companies create clubs, even limited ones, because they want  to sell more clubs.

sldr-big1

How Limited is Limited?

What is different is that when Cobra (and most other companies) release limited offerings, they tell you exactly how limited the product is. For now anyway, TaylorMade isn’t talking numbers.

TaylorMade’s SLDR White is a Limited Edition, and we’ll all just have to take their word for it.

My guess (and it’s just that) is that they are in fact producing less SLDR Whites, but given how deep we are into the SLDR lifecycle, and that fact that everyone (including TaylorMade) is growing more sensitive to retail inventory levels, that’s not so much limited as it is logical.

Produced in Logical Quantities doesn’t have quite the same draw as Limited Edition though, right? So Limited it is.

Why White? Why Now?

At some point TaylorMade may talk about how a segment of golfers really missed the white crowns of R1* and RocketBallz series drivers. While I’m certain there are guys that really do love white (I think it’s cool), there’s a whole lot more to this than caving to the quiet demands of a small market segment.

“SLDR has to live.”

Those 4 very simple words (if you consider SLDR a word) came from the mouth of a TaylorMade representative several months ago. Let’s put them in context.

Whether it was to fight off a surging Callaway, or to make the financials look better after the late start to the 2013 golf season, TaylorMade took a shot with the R1 Black. When that didn’t produce the entirety of the desired result, TaylorMade released SLDR early…way early.

SLDR was originally slated for launch in early 2014 as the first complete reimagination of TaylorMade’s flagship driver since R7. It was to be the celebration of a decade of adjustability. It should have been the latest and greatest competing on equal footing with Callaway’s Big Bertha series.

Instead TaylorMade used it (and later JetSpeed) to make a late season financial push.

SLDR has been an unquestionable success. It’s one hell of a badass driver.

sldr-big4

Despite being among the oldest in a new line of flagship drivers on the shelf it has so far been able to hold the #1 spot (retail sales). That’s no small feat, but the undeniable reality is that through aggressive marketing, and a very solid product, Callaway has been able to take a chunk out of TaylorMade’s lead.

Even as the footsteps get closer, SLDR has to live.

If they’re going to compete on equal footing, TaylorMade almost certainly has to get back on schedule. That means major product releases happen in the Spring. You can’t continually release new product at the end of the golf season when your major competitors are all on a Spring schedule. You’ll eventually lose.

If you squeeze product lifecycles down to 6 or 8 months, you’re going to piss off the consumer in substantial numbers, and eventually you’re still going to lose.

The conundrum for TaylorMade is that quality and performance in golf equipment is often (too often) associated with newness. The latest and greatest is always better than what came before it…even 4 months before it. We’ve said it countless times. If the goal is to compete, and to win, year in and year out (and it absolutely is that at TaylorMade), you can’t succeed with the oldest product on the shelf.

Unfortunately replacing SLDR now isn’t an option (at least not a good one). SLDR has to live. And it probably has to live for the rest of the 2014 season.

So if TaylorMade is going to retain its crown as the #1 Driver in Golf, they’re going to have to continuously come up with creative ways to keep an aging product fresh.

So far that’s exactly what they’ve tried to do.

sldr-big3

A Very Clever TaylorMade

My opinion; TaylorMade made a pretty big mistake releasing SLDR when they did. With spring finally here, they’re running at a clear disadvantage. With the exception of Titleist, everybody has newer product.

That said, to TaylorMade’s credit they have done an absolutely masterful job of keeping SLDR as fresh as is reasonably possible considering the less than ideal circumstances.

They made LoftUp a story unto itself, and have been relentlessly telling, and retelling it.

When the original lure of SLDR started to fade, they released the 430.

When that story ran its course they made a story out of the 14° offering.

Just about a month ago they offered up the SLDR guarantee. Love it, or your money back. No questions asked.

And just as we’re beginning the golf season in earnest, and consumers are finally starting to spend real money, TaylorMade is rejuvenating SLDR for the 3rd time by offering up the SLDR white.

It’s SLDR, SLDR, and more SLDR. Tweak it, keep it fresh, but don’t change it.

That’s what they’ve done so far, and my guess is they’re not done yet.

SQ034_hero_wide_D (1)SQ034_hero_wide_D2 (1)

Final Thoughts

I have absolutely no issue with TaylorMade releasing the SLDR White. Actually, I’m kind of happy to see the return of white, even if I’ve believed from the moment it disappeared that white would be back.

It would be easy to chuckle at this release and call it what it is (and it absolutely is TaylorMade digging in as best they can to fight for market share). It’s certainly fuel for the fire of the TaylorMade haters out there, and I suppose this time around that’s more fair than it has ever been.

For the rest of you…TaylorMade fans, and those uncomfortably riding the fence, I’m optimistic (but far from certain) that SLDR White could further signal TaylorMade’s commitment to do what needs to be done. I think they may just ride it out this time.

SLDR has to live. It can never be seen as the discount/budget alternative to flagship offerings from Titleist, Callaway, and even Nike. There can be no price rollbacks this season – not with this driver.

White or no white, if TaylorMade is willing to absorb whatever hit that comes from having an old driver on the shelf, and lets SLDR live for the duration, it would go a long way towards restoring the faith of the consumer, and fighting the growing perception of TaylorMade as golf’s discount brand.

If they don’t…no matter how much they want to talk about TRUST, there really won’t be any left to discuss.

The TaylorMade SLDR White Driver is available at retail beginning 5/2.

This is not so much about a grey, white, red, green, or black headed driver. TM has officially become the “Nike” of the golf industry. They are a marketing machine. Thanks to the TM honey hole, adidas. TM pays for more commercials/ads then any other company. TM pays more money to and for Tour players, and local PGA Pro’s to play and promote their product. Just like Nike is a marketing company that happens to make good sports apparel and good equipment. TM has done a great job of becoming a golf marketing company that happens to make good golf clubs. This is not an indictment of TM for their business decisions. Obviously, the business plan is working. In my opinion, Nike once believed they could make a golf club, put the iconic swoosh on it (i.e Nike Forged Ti Driver circa 2003 or the Ignite Driver), and it would sell just like a basketball, baseball glove, shoe, shirt, etc with a swoosh. Well, Nike found out golf is a different animal, and is now making a quality product to compete in the industry.
Golf product, generally, needs to perform better then the current product the player is playing. TM has created a grey area in performance with new vs. old (6-8 months old). TM has done a great job of telling the consumer they need the latest and greatest, even if it does not perform better. The message is “be FIRST to have the NEW”. The results may not be better, but it is new and exciting.
Having the latest and greatest TM driver has become a status symbol, just like having the latest and greatest Air Jordan’s. The driver doesn’t make you a better golfer, just like the Air Jordan’s don’t let you dunk from the free throw line.
Now, this is really for the middle of the road player. The best amateur players don’t care. They want the best product (whether it’s 10 years old or 6 months old) for their skilled game. The less skilled player is generally not going to drop $300-$400 on a new driver every year, because they recognize it’s the skill level, not the club.
Fellow golfers, the game is dying. Fewer players, fewer rounds, fewer courses. The golf club manufacture will tell you to make the hole bigger, make the course shorter and less challenging, or play 15 holes instead of 18. But, they will never tell you to stop spending money on equipment, and spend those dollars on PLAYING MORE GOLF. It’s not about the black or white driver, it’s about growing the game. If you really want to grow the game, do this…

      1. Take the $300 – $400 you were going to spend on the “NEW” driver or $600-$1000 on the new irons, and use those dollars to PLAY MORE GOLF.
      2. Take the dollars, and spend it on your 9-17 year old son or daughter and TAKE THEM GOLFING with a $199 box set. Teach them the game and they will love to PLAY MORE GOLF just like we do.
      3. Only update ONE of your clubs every other year (if you must) but not your whole bag. Spend those dollars on PLAYING MORE GOLF. I believe Bubba Watson just changed his set of irons after playing the same set (at least the same model) for 9-10 years.
      4. Spend those dollars on a lesson, or series of lessons from a local golf pro. I know it’s not as fun as a new driver or irons, but it will help you hit your current driver further and your current irons straighter. That’s why you are buying new clubs anyway, right?

TaylorMade has become a marketing company trying to sell you the “new” product to make them money. They are doing what any really good business does, and they are good at it. Again, not an indictment on TM, or any golf equipment company, but the business/marketing plan will never change until we as the consumer shift the tide on our end.

When SLDR came out last year, I made bets with my friends that TM will come out with a white version.

I’m not sure why you would have the urge or need to personally attack people that like TMag. This additional color is no different than when PING released the pink g20 or Cobra and their exclusive colors per retailer. Like the green Bio Cell. Oh wait but Ping charged and extra $100 or more for the additional color. Its not milking the audience. How many people that bought a SLDR are really going to spend another $400+ just to get it in white. All they are doing is trying to appeal to other people that would like white better and have been borderline on their purchase. Not sure if you remember but white was almost TMag’s trademark for the last few years. Sure some might trade in the grey for white but that’s only the people with a lot of disposable income. And if they do trade in their old for the new that makes it even more affordable for people to buy the SLDR who are impartial to color. TMag is not expecting this to double their sales from people that already have the SLDR. As far as continuing to call people “dumb” because they like TMag maybe those comments should be left to yourself. Saying something as negative as that, how are you really helping anything. Its because you yourself is the selfish and small minded person. I’d prefer if people like you would actually leave the game. You probably turn more people away from the game with your dumb comments then help it.

Nice distance numbers by Gunmetal. I have a R9 and I’m sure the new stuff is about the same. Why spend $400.00 for not much difference. Golf still comes down to hitting greens and chipping and putting. If we believed everyone’s hype we would drive the ball 450 yards by now. By the way, if bigger is always better, why the mini driver. Surely the great minds at TM can make a 460cc driver go straight, well maybe if they stop putting 46″ shafts in them. How about making accurate drivers for a change? 3 yards longer but 15 more yards offline is dumb.

      Wow.
Just when you think TM has really learned how to deal with customers, they try to foist something else on us. They got away from white (hurray IMHO) and sent us a club that works and you can look at it even on a bright Florida day without sunglasses. Now they come up with this. Next they will release another version with the Franz Klammer ski sweater on the crown.

It amazes me as to why IF you put out a superior product, you simply don’t let the product sell itself? If the Sldr really is better it should capture more market share all on its own. Before i’m categorized as a TM hater, I have both the 460 and the 430 in thank God grey color. For further argument’s sake, the 430 is better.

Guess TM never heard the phrase if you build it and its better, they will come.

I am probably on a rant with this, but I really have trouble with TM’s marketing people. They will do anything.

kidding aside, seems like a few companies are releasing limited editions this year. I’t been a bad year for sales, especially the northern US/Canada. Nike is releasing an all black version of their performance head, and now TM with the white SLDR – something has to lure the consumer in.

They outa call TM the money making scheme company because they push out ckeaply made products with little or big rediculous different ideas to make an excuse for a new driver to come out. I hit the wilson driver the other day and it blows any of those TM drivers away in distance FEEL and is so much more consistant, while the staff irons quality is 10000 times better quality than TMs current irons, why do people continue to buy into this marketeting making machine TM is. I hit the slider its ok but it would be alot better with a decent quality shaft in it but for 400 bucks a driver you think thats at least TM would do without an upcharge on top of the 400 dollar price tag, but hey TM only cares about sending out cheap shafts to save money to pay their advertising bills.

As much as I’d like to agree with you, I just can’t. I have an R1 driver that I purchased new last year for 500$ (which is fair, since it’s the “pro” model so to speak) and was able to get the Matrix 7M3 as a no upcharge option. A 300$ shaft for no upcharge, and it’s the legit aftermarket shaft too. On another point, what company isn’t a money making scheme? I’ve compared a Cally Big bertha to my R1 and it went the similar distance, even though they say they’re super long. All companies are out to make money, and they do whatever they can to make more of it.

I like it! I bought the SLDR (based on MGS testing and got fitted) 2 days before the guarantee came out and used it for 2 weeks. If white were an option, I probably would have gone for it since I have the Rocketballz fairway and hybrids. Unfortunately, the LoftUp doesn’t seem to work for me. When I get to 17 degrees loft, my carry distance suffers and I also got less roll than my 8 year old driver. TM was nice enough to honor the guarantee. They sent a box and FedEX mailing label and I have sent it back. Wish it worked because I was very accurate with it and could work the ball. So I am still looking.

One reason i like the white is its a matte finish like the others and doesnt scratch as easy as the glossy finishes. Maybe now Tmag can get back on track and release clubs in a timely fashion with both colors available from the start.
