USGA Approved: Cobra F7 and F7+ Drivers

The USGA has just approved two new drivers from Cobra Golf. It’s a safe assumption, given past release cycles, that KING F7 and KING F7+ are Cobra’s 2017 models, and will be headed to retail in the not so distant future.

What we can tell from the photos is that both are 3 (movable) weight systems. The samples sent to USGA include (2) 2-gram weights and a single 12g weight. Markings on the sole suggest the story will again be one of trajectory and spin, although the explicitly labeled draw position common to both models is new this year.

One noteworthy point gleaned from the markings is the addition of a TEXREME Carbon crown on the F7 model. TEXTREME is the material used in the company’s flagship KING LTD offering. This is particularly surprising given previous incarnations of the standard (non plus) model have leverage all-titanium construction.

Generally, carbon fiber stories are all about saving weight (your run of the mill mass properties stuff), but the use of carbon fiber can sometimes introduce other issues. It will be interesting to learn how the crown material impacts sound, and more importantly for most of you, how, if at all, it impacts the retail price.

Unlike the two previous seasons where distinctions between standard and plus (+) models were clear, aesthetically speaking there doesn’t appear to be much separating the two. The F7+ doesn’t have the CarbonTrac, or any other apparent exclusive to the + technology.  It should be noted that USGA photos don’t convey details (especially scale) particularly well. The USGA also doesn’t publish crown photos which could paint a much more vivid picture of the distinctions between the two.

Agree 2 grams is less than 1% of a 206 gram driver head, hard to believe it can do anything. Also agree it takes a minimum of 20 grams to have any measureable impact. No sure why they never offer the heavier weights? Did TM have a 16 gram weight once?

Golf equipment manufacturers are burying themselves under a pile of new equipment no one will buy because the average weekend hacker has already 5 drivers ( or more) in the garage, hidden from wife – that in the last 10 years promised miracles that never happened. The only rescue is Asia, Asia, Asia and China, China, China and perhaps global warming.

l play the SS 427 changed the shaft , hit it 247 – 254 on average . I’m 67 and not going to pay 4-5 hundred dollars for just a few more yards.

I’m using a Cobra 350 SS from early 2000. I’m tired of searching for distance. This driver goes further and higher than anything I’ve ever owned. The ERC is another driver that is capable of out driving it’s successors.

Love the looks of this, I upgrade to the previous model this year and enjoy hitting this driver.

Will be tempted to upgrade again after looking at those images.

I appreciate that they don’t change their shaft adapter with new offerings; I have a fly z+ as well and love club. It would take a lot to get me to get a new one unless it breaks. Wish they’d get off the new driver every year cycle and take more of a Titleist approach.

Doubt it. If the Cobra Reps cannot meet the shop owners, very doubtful if shop owners care to push the any Driver or clubs the come out with. Cobra reps are about the worst.

I have the Fly Z+ and love it. They have possibly simplified things here by doing weights in 3 spots versus a continuum along the sliding track. It reminds me of a combo of Big Bertha and Bridgestone J15. Maybe they found that simpler is better. My driver has the option of weight in front or back, there isn’t that much dialing in to do. I wonder if the F versus F7+ will be head size, 460 versus 440ish.

Tired of looking at the “next best thing” only for it to be within 3 yards of a 3 year old model. How about testing distance on hits away from the sweet spot? I’ll buy the driver that gets the same distance on hits in a 2 inch circle in the center of the driver TODAY!

Steve, I will buy it too. But it’s not going to happen. Centre contacts will always maximise distance. You know, physics, logic, that stuff. Drivers have reached their limit when it comes to distance – we all know that. However, the “right” driver for each player is available, still. Moveable weight is effective in a driver for many golfers.

On centre shots will create a very pleasant feel but will not always create the longest distance.

They’ve always made top notch drivers problem is their color schemes are too extreme and they release more drivers than TaylorMade does. If they went traditional on colors and slowed their releases, I can see them competing against Callaway, Titleist, Ping and TaylorMade. Until then they are just a company barely getting by thanks to being owned by Puma.

White or black options are too extreme? Also Callaway is releasing its 4th driver this year where Cobra has 3….you’re correct on one thing though, they make top notch drivers

When your lineup includes blue, orange, green, white as an option, it’s hard for consumers to look at them with seriousness. I have friends in retail and it’s always the struggle. Callaway has Odyssey helping them along with being the number one selling iron. They can afford to release tons of drivers. Also, there are two more coming. 816, gbb, and xr16 are about to be discounted. Cobra isn’t making money but Puma s banking on them. Their last 3 releases have been some of the games best across the board. They don’t sell because of the stigma the colors portrait. I hope it turns around for them though.

They reduced colors. Drivers this year were only available in Blue, Black, and Gray, with a special edition orange. And if someone cares about the other colors available more than performance they’re doing it wrong. I tested every major driver out there, and found the F6+ the best. Have it in least forgiving and lowest launch settings, and it’s still more forgiving and longer than every other driver (in fact I found the Taylormade offerings to be the among the worst). They have 4 drivers to cater to 4 audiences. The “MAX” line is the ultra forgiving and helps get the ball up, more for seniors who can’t swing like they used to. The base F6 is for your typical golfer. The F6+ for your above average, and the LTD for your great golfers. It makes sense to have a selection. Also, with the amount of adjustability for lofts and weights, there’s a good chance their clubs will work for anyone. They really should have more respect than they get, but people are convinced that Callaway and Taylormade are the only ones that make good equipment.

They look exactly the same other than the 12 gram weight is in the front position on the +. That makes sense considering the people who will buy the pro are more likely to position the weight there. I really think they found out that additional weighting positions beyond 2 or 3 spots don’t really make much of a difference. But, if they offer additional weights beyond the standard 2 and 12 grams, that could make a big difference. Being able to put a 12 gram weight toward the front AND in the draw position could make for a lower spinning draw bias driver.

The big question is, have they finally gone to different CC for the + version. It doesn’t appear that way, but maybe they have. I bet the + crown is pretty clean vs the regular version probably has some sort of graphic or lines.

      More cosmetic magic !!!
Do you remember when TM had their movable weights call TLC.

Each year they added more and claimed up to 30+yards of draw/fade and then suddenly switched to sliding weights ala the SLDR.

So now, Cobra has exhausted their run with sliders and is going to fixed weights. One month from now there will be a weight kit available to “five tune” your shot shape !!!!

WE HAVE SEEN THIS MOVIE ALREADY ! ENOUGH !!!!!

Hi Alan, what do you propose instead of what Cobra are doing? If you were given free rein to design a driver for Cobra, what design features would you incorporate? It’s tough because there exist no materials that out-perform Titanium and carbon fibre for clubheads. And then there’s the Rules of Golf to conform to. Personally, I think all manufacturers of note are doing an amazing job with their offerings.

Pete I couldn’t agree more! Amazing how some trash products yet they’ve never even tried particular products or brands. Most manufacturers are pushing the limits the USGA mandates but some companies aren’t in a position to buy the Tour and spend on marketing like others do. Go to a demo day and test it against your current driver on a Trackman and see what it can do!

Looks like a step back from the F6… F6 has 5 discreet positions between high and low, all this does is add a draw setting by taking away those additional CG locations… Might sway the slicer crowd, but not me.
