Bubba Gets His Pink On with Volvik

Bubba Gets His Pink On with Volvik

A couple of weeks ago the golf world went collectively apeshit when the game’s 650th ranked player made a ball deal. This week, the world’s 10th ranked player announced a new golf ball deal to considerably less fanfare.

In a deal rumored for so long Stevie Wonder could see it coming, Volvik USA has signed Bubba Watson to a multi-year deal to play its colorful line of balls, giving Volvik its highest profile player on Tour. Bubba will be playing Volvik’s 4-piece, 105 compression S4 ball this season in pink, pearl blue/white and green.

This is, without question, the biggest thing that has happened to Volvik since it started operations in the US in 2012.

#ChangeTheGame

Volvik’s announcement comes with the requisite hashtag – #ChangeTheGame – but the biggest game change out of all this is most likely for Volvik itself.

“Already we’ve had more people on the Volvik USA website in one day (Tuesday), than in the history of our company,” Volvik Sales and Marketing chief Jon Claffey tells MyGolfSpy. “That speaks volumes.”

Like Tiger, Bubba clearly moves the needle.

“It’s not like we don’t do marketing. We’ve won on the LPGA Tour; we have our own LPGA Tour event, the Volvik Championship in Michigan. We’re pretty aggressive – we’re the official golf ball of Morning Drive, and we’re on the set every day with our staff bags. But even with all the marketing we’ve ever done and with all the money we’ve spent, we’ve had more people on our website (Tuesday) than ever in our history.” – Jon Claffey, Volvik USA

Bubba first heard about the balls from Volvik staffer Craig Stadler, but what really sparked the deal was last year’s World Long Drive Championship in Oklahoma. Volvik was the official ball of the event, and Bubba was part of the broadcast with Golf Channel.

“All our different colored balls were being smashed by these long drive guys,” says Claffey. “Bubba’s watching and tweeting about it, and that’s when he saw the pink golf balls being hit 439 yards. It kinda sparked an idea in his head.”

Bubba, or any tour pro for that matter, is not about to sacrifice performance just to play a colored golf ball, no matter how sweet the deal. Claffey says Bubba tested the Volvik S4 head-to-head with his old gamer, the ProV1x, and found no discernable difference.

“We were hoping he’d say it was 10 yards longer, but he just came back and said ‘there’s no difference. I can play pretty much the same thing.’ He’s such a feel player. He tested it about four times and was very confident the S4 was everything he needed.”

Volvik is making a special shade of pink for Bubba for the Tournament of Champions, as well as a green for the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Both will be available at retail.

Bubba will also be heavily featured in Volvik’s print, digital, broadcast and social media marketing efforts.

The Volvik Story

Volvik has been making golf balls for 36 years, with a factory in South Korea. The company has been part of S.M Culture and Contents, a South Korean entertainment and travel agency and television production company, since 2012.

Up until about nine years ago, Volvik made lower end 2-piece balls, as well as balls for other brands. Claffey says it was about that time the company decided to get serious about Tour-level performance.

“We decided to change who we were, to rebrand,” he says. “We stopped making 2-piece balls and stopped doing OEM business out of our factory and put all our emphasis on making some of the best golf balls in the world.”

Claffey says management saw an open niche in high-end, color-tour level balls, and decided to dedicate itself to filling that niche.

“Nobody else was making anything more than a yellow 4-piece ball. We’re the only company right now making a 4-piece ball in green, in pink and in orange. We have our own innovation and our own technology. We have 43 different worldwide patents that we utilize across our product line, and we are the only ones to combine performance with the entire color spectrum. That made everyone realize that colored golf balls aren’t just two-piece non-performing balls that feel like a rock.” – Jon Claffey

Pretty In Pink

Bubba’s affinity for pink makes the Volvik match a no-brainer. He’s been using a pink Volvik ball during practice rounds at Kapalua and will be putting one into play in today’s opening round.

Bubba Watson

“The game is supposed to be fun,” says Claffey. “I think that’s been lost, with the golf ball at least. Color has started making golf fun again, with Bubba and his pink driver, with Rickie and his orange. The golf ball has been holding on to this traditionalist mindset. Why does that have to be the case?”

If you’ve been paying any attention at all, you know the golf ball market is getting, well, weird. Snell and, to a lesser extent, Vice and a few other direct-to-consumer brands have been rattling cages for a couple of years now. And Costco, quite unintentionally, is threatening to blow the doors wide open with the Kirkland Signature.

“There’s been a sea change in the open-mindedness of golfers,” says Claffey. “A lot of that is when they spend a certain amount on balls, and then spend a lesser amount on balls, and they see not much of a performance difference.”

Claffey says Volvik’s U.S. market share is approaching 3% (it’s #2 in South Korea), and its retail footprint is spreading. “We’re now in every Dick’s Sporting Goods, all 740 locations, as well as all the big box stores you can name. Our distribution points are up to about 4,500 doors in the U.S.”

Bubba Watson

Colored golf balls aren’t anything new, especially if you play a lot of Miniature Golf. Both Jerry Pate and Wayne Levi won on Tour using orange balls back in the 80’s, but since then it’s been a sea of white, with just a dash of Optic Yellow for those daring few. Volvik, with Bubba riding shotgun, thinks the time is right to bring a rainbow of color to the game.

What do you think of Bubba’s new color splash? Would you game tour-level performance balls in pink, green or orange?

I’ve been using the Volvik green matte color for a while now and love it. I see the ball better in the Florida sun light plus I like the feel of the ball when putting.

If you are Red/Green COLORBLIND, the Volvik Vivid in Green is a must try… Hopefully you wear sunglasses – if so, this ball visibility is even better !! It launches a little higher, but that is a plus for most, especially on iron shots..

To add to what some other colorblind golfers have already written, it is really discouraging and frustrating when I hit a white golf ball into the air and I simply cannot see where it goes due to certain sky (contrast) conditions. I sometimes can tell by the quality of my ball strike, but is annoying when I don’t even know where to go look for my ball. It makes it almost impossible to continue to play… but I always keep playing, hoping the sky conditions will change.

I have played the Volvik Vivid–the one with the matte finish–in orange and green and the Vice Neon (which is their “Pro” model ball in neon green). Let me add that I have only played the Vivid and Vice Neon a limited amount of time. I am a big fan of Srixon balls and play some in their tour yellow. All are easy to see. For me, the Vivid, especially the orange, and Vice Neon are the easiest to spot.

I like the Vice Pro in both white and neon green. It is my favorite of the Vice balls. Many have stated that it is Volvik’s equivalent to the ProV1.

The Vivid is interesting. Its green is yellowish in hue. The orange I can see much better than the green. Two final comments on the Vivid: the ball carries a good distance and I always seem to get a long rollout or chase. I don’t care for the feel off the putter. The ball seems dead or heavy. Yet, most interestingly, so far I have putted with it really well.

Obviously Bubba doesn’t have the same problem we have in OZ. At our course we call coloured golf balls “Crow balls” because whenever we use them the crows steel them. Even during the seasons when the crows are ignoring the white balls they will still take the coloured balls. Our local Pro had a deal to trial the Volvik matt finish ball and most people liked them but everyone I know lost them to a crow.

I think that it is brilliant by both Bubba and by Volvik. That’s a great example of a win/win that betters both the sponsor and the sponsored. Bubba will increase his personal branding. This will help sell Volvik balls, and given that Volvik actually makes a good ball will leave people pleasantly surprised with their purchase.

There’s one other hidden win with colored balls — it speeds up pace of play because they are easier to find. I’d rather have a colored 2 piece ball than any white ball regardless of price point for that reason. The exception is green and some blue — those are hard to find or to track in the sky.

One thing they would agree though is that you could see those puppies from pretty far away and yes they stood out on the fairway, in the leaves and in the bunkers. You also never incurred a penalty for hitting the wrong ball.

I used to use a $30.00 a dz ball, but couldn’t justify the expense when lesser costing balls Started to perform just as good. I’ve raised this point before, why doesn’t some ball mfg make “illegal” balls that go longer? The USGA has rules on how far balls can go as well as clubs. But who cares what the USGA says? USGA rules are good for most of us most of the time, OB, water hazards, ground under repair, yadda yadda. The USGA controls tournament play and what equipment the big boys play. But for the 99.999% rest of us if a ball that could “truly” go longer or some club design that improved play would be welcome even if violating current USGA rules. The truth is either we are at the veritable diminished return end of golf technology or being held there by the USGA.

Dunlop made a ball called “The Rebel” which had an illegal weight. Wouldn’t say it was stupidly longer but it was longer. Not hard either. I won a dozen at a tournament a few years ago for getting long drive (irony). Haven’t really noticed them one shelves lately though.

I messed around with some balls as well (ha) that were slightly smaller and heavier than regulation, trying to see if the extra distance would help.

I definitely hit them significantly further and with a lot more roll.

HOWEVER you can forget about control around the green with those things… It became impossible to get the ball to land softly, and if you ever faced a downhill chip you could easily find yourself in the rough on the other side of the green.

It shouldn’t be shocking in a sport where you putt for dough that ultimately a little extra help with the long game ultimately kills you when it messes up your short game.

My follow golfer, why do you and why do I love this game so much – for most as portrayed by the commercial on TV where guys are loading their clubs, three are dead quiet, the fourth, it is over, never again, damn this game, and then in the drivers seat as I know I do, okay what time next week guys. Why, simply, there is not other game, and yes I was an athlete, but only golf gives us a game we dream of always improving, the big win; a game we can play for ever, and a game we can play with all kinds of people of all levels, IF THEY DRAG ASS AND MAKE IT A MANATHON, a great game, so yea, your point make it easy or easier, bend the rules, the result a game that never seems to be about to be everyone’s game is indeed your game and mine, we love that it is hard, that is the critical element, we are always tweaking, working on it, dreaming, and that comes after that career round that most of us then shoot one of our worst next time out because we expected we had moved to a higher level? Enjoy it, the equipment thing, will be a tough one as manufacturers I fear are the money, and without it will they collaspe to the pressure, or will the game evolve to where there is a Pro game and the others game, not sure, but I do know I personally don’t want it easy, then as I sit here looking at the snow I have nothing to work on as even as an old man I still believe I got it, and no not blue balls as it is cold here, and snowing. God Bless, I hope this response comes off well, i hope you see this reply as saying enjoy the game, you are on this site because you love the game, only us read all this stuff all the time who love it so much.
If you lift your ball all the time for those preferred juicy lies, we make that your choice and bet accordingly in my group, but for me I seem to enjoy most the purity of the game, even those bad lies, as that is the challenge, like all rounds they can be memorable at spots, bad or a good memory, a story, best are those rare times watching my opponent, my competitor fade as he thought I was done when my ball ended up in that huge divot, no more like a ditch, (don’t you love those clowns that think it is someone else’s job to replace the sod they busted?) Like Watson (that be the old guy) I smartly said watch this – hoping to not break my wrist as I beat down on it remembering the tips I had watched for years – yea won the hole, No! he lost the hole as he couldn’t believe I got to the green-side apron, he “chumped” it – love the game, the rub of the green.

I’d imagine Bubba at least likes them and they perform well for him, players learnt years ago that balls that don’t work aren’t worth the money unless you’re getting paid more than you would earn on tour. Tony Jacklin made the mistake of chasing money with a unknown ball manufacturer in the ’70s and his game suffered terribly. When he told the company the ball was junk they said, “we know we just wanted the publicity!”

I play the Vice Pro as well. Used to play the ProV1. And I agree. Performs just as well if not better for me than the V1.

I want to try Snell too. Also the Costco balls if you can find them.

Yes, a very good ball but I can get Callaway Chrome Soft for $5 cheaper

I’ve hit the ones with a matte finish. Decent ball, but makes almost no sound off the clubface and dirt/sand sticks to it like crazy.

A green ball? As if finding your ball in the rough isn’t hard enough ;-)

I guess one way of making sure you sell more balls. If they lose more, they buy more!

Yes… the s3 has a great feel and performs well. The s4 performs but also feels like a rock.

I think their matte finish balls (vivid) are more outside the box than the funky colors. They definitely make you take a second look when they catch your eye.
