Amazes Me The Response We Get On Putters

It always amazes me the responses we get when we post pictures of new putters yet to be released to the public on the blog or forum.  Putters as a whole are generally extremely polarizing…people either love them or hate them…and golfers form their opinions fairly quickly.

Typically if the putter looks similar to a past design with simple modifications (finish, slightly wider flange, milling, etc.) the overall response is more widely accepted.  Although if a designer tries to think outside the box and create something with a new technology or design that is less conventional the response is almost always more negative in tone.  It could be the most game changing technology in the world for a club that you use 3 x times more than your driver and if it looks odd people are most likely going to bash it.

Remember…Non-Conventional & Innovative Is Almost Always Going To Look Different

Although in the rest of the industry golfers are always wanting a ground breaking technology to be introduced year in and year out…for example: drivers.  Which is unfortunate for the putter industry…because it gives these designers no real reason to push the envelope…especially if all they have to do is remake the Ping Anser for the 1,503 time to be able to sell more putters.  Why create something new…when there is not much reward for your risk?

But remember when you go beyond conventional thinking and create something more innovative it is almost always going to look different than anything you have seen before.

And since day one of making their putters…STX has always been a more non-conventional option.  And for this reason…it has for the most part not been as accepted in the putter field as some others.  Up to this point they were really known for their inserts more than anything else…yet when most golfers think of inserts on putters the majority think Odyssey.  But you might find it interesting to know that STX actually had inserts in their putters (1985) before Odyssey (1991).

Introducing the 100% Milled – STX Xform Putters

But as these images show STX seems to be looking to add a 100% milled line of putters to their line-up.  I had been asking for years if they had a milled line in their plans and it looks like I got my answer.  And while they still have a more non-conventional look and feel to them compared to other milled putters…the response from our readers was quite surprising.  We released the first ever seen “spy pics” of the new STX Xform 1 putter on our forum last week and the response was almost 100% positive.  I have also received quite a few emails and private messages asking for us to do a review of this model….the MGS readers seem to really like the fresh new look offered by the STX Xform 1 model.

So without further ado…here are the brand new spy pics of the new STX milled line….it includes the Xform 1, Xform 2 & Xform 3 models.  And I am sure they would love to hear your thoughts.

They do look great – and I am happy to hear that they also come in LH!

Will have to find a place to demo them first.

Am I the only one who wants to hurl on these? They are no different/better than the old STX models and at what benefit? I can’t imagine ugly thing will make me start holing putts. There is no talk of technology except them being soft. You can make a putter pretty and still have a soft feel, why make it so ugly? Why are they built like that? The #2 is ok but 1 and kind of 3 are just atrocious.

Very nice look to all three, especially the milling details! The face texture probably makes for a softer feel too. Is the finish anodized or plated or something?

Only complaint is that the MOI about the shaft axis looks like it would be much lower than an Anser-like design. I need the forgiveness!

Nice organic, futuristic design. They look like they could come from a classic Sci-Fi movie. I’d be interested in giving them a role.

These putters look very interesting, would like to see in person, and try them out, but I guess that would be impossible living over here in Thailand.

These look amazing I really like the small bladed one but guessing I would actually have to be a good putter to use it.

I really like #1. #2 is pretty, but wouldn’t fit me. #3 wouldn’t fit and is not my cup of tea, though it is cool looking for what it is.

Art meets function in form #1. Plus, it appears that loft/lie adjustments (often neglected with putters) can be made easily. Looking forward to trying it.
