FIRST PHOTOS: Titleist C16 Irons & Driver

Back in March, MyGolfSpy broke the story to the golfing world about Titleist entering the high-end market, and the effect and influence PXG was having on the “#1 Ball in Golf” company.  A few weeks later some images showed up on the USGA conforming club list.

Today the first in-hand photos have surfaced thanks to JapaneseGolfPro.  Titleist isn’t known for having drivers that look all that different from the USGA pics (black and white).  But, for those gear-heads that want to see a little red and shiny chrome here are the first pics in the wild of the $1,000 driver and irons.

The Marines are looking for a few good men, Titleist is looking for a few good idiots.

Ps. Let me guess, it’s longer than the 915….?

Hah curious about the analogy with Marines . But why would someone be an idiot to buy the club. Perhaps you feel it’s overprice and overkill. Golf is a sport and if the club feels good go for it.

I work for a well known golf shop. That being said, I never thought we’d sell the Titleist T-MB irons. We’ve sold Nearly 20 sets in just under 2 months. Point being, those with money will shell out the cash, even if it’s just to look good…

Its not the arrow, its the indian. If you need to spend $1000 on a driver that might give you a few extra yards and thats if you hit it perfect everytime, then you might aswell just get a Jack Hartounian 12 guage. Too many people relying on technology instead of skill.

The biggest problems here will be golfers’ future perceptions of their irons and woods, if they do intend to have high-end goods, a lot of consumers will see they goods that they once saw as desirable as inferior, will Titleist ‘water-down’ their standard equipment to boast the high-end performance? A high-end OEM doesn’t have that perception as everything is high-end, but a company that staggers their goods will eventually start to lose customers when the customers lose faith in the goods they once saw as desirable.

Titleist need to be very careful how they pitch these, limited editions are fine to some extent, but they may do more harm to their brand than good. If they market them as limited edition prototypes that feature technology that filters down to their main lines then they might get away with it.

Seems like maybe a visual differentiator is missing here. If you’re gonna make a $1K driver, then visually it should look different as well. Not just like the next generation of their “standard” line. For the driver as well as that iron.

I don’t understand all of the complaining here about this. Something is only worth what someone else is willing to pay for it. Titleist or PXG charging $1,000 for a driver has absolutely no effect on me or golf in general. Golf is a perfectly fine game with a $300 driver or even $50 one from the used club bin. They will either sell these at this price or they won’t. If they don’t sell, then they won’t make that mistake again. Either way, it is irrelevant to the game and to most of us.

Do the car websites have people complaining about the price when a new Ferrari is announced?

It’s like the everything else, if you don’t like it or the price then leave it alone. I’ve played my 588 Mt’s going on 3 years, my R15 for 2 and my PAL putter for a 1 1/2 years. I still hit the ball pretty much like I did 30 years ago even at 64. I didn’t pay a mortgage payment for them and I still love playing golf with them. That said, I do hope the equipment companies come to their senses and start pricing clubs for the recreational golfer just like they make clubs for them. Make a $1000 club for the pro and a $300 club for the weekend golfer. I’m also getting really tired about length. We all want to hit it further, so, spend the $1000 if you have it and get lessons. The technology has helped but, if you can’t hit the ball in the center of the club even a $5000 club isn’t going to get you more length. Buy a set of clubs you can afford, get fitted and if your new to the game or struggling to get better, spend the rest of your money on some lessons.

I am sure that they are better, but is the Golfer better. By buying this at these prices we are only convincing Equipment companies that , as PT Barnum said there is a sucker born every moment. Sure R&D is expensive, but the consumer ends up paying for every give away they do.

Fact is Golf is dying and it is dying because of cost, not the cost of the manufacturers or the Golf Courses but the cost to the Golfers to buy and to play the game. It amazes me that the cost just keeps going up and the companies and courses keep having money problems. Do the people that control these courses and Companies have no sense? Sounds to me that Titleist is going after PXG to by the most expensive.

My real problem with these clubs are that when TaylorMade released the M1 @ $499 – the golfing community was outraged. Now, it will seem like a 1/2 price bargain.
Golf should becoming more affordable, not catering to the elitist attitude from it’s history.

No wonder golf isn’t supporting the golf stores and pro shops and courses and teaching pros anymore.

I have seen some really crappy swings sporting M series TMs. I would laugh at their desparation if I didn’t pity them so much.

If you can play in the mid 80’s, you can do it with a set of clubs dumped off by the rich and stupid.

Don’t rush to judgement of titleist on this. I actually hit this driver at a demo day on Friday. It is for real. Incredibly solid and 15 yards more carry over my 915D4 on trackman. Is it worth $1,000, that’s up to the individual. I would check it out before passing judgement, the irons are very nice as well. Best explanation is a cross between the TMB and AP2.

I remember when New Balance came out with a $100 sneaker in the late 70’s and everyone said no way! Remember everybody scoffed at the Titleist Professional Ball when it was priced over $30 per dozen? Anyone bought a hockey stick lately? People will buy it because they want to. They are not stupid if that’s what they want to do. Heck, maybe an expensive driver is just the motivation for someone to start playing more, ( the games needs that). What if this driver is so well engineered that you won’t replace it for many years? That would put you ahead of the every other year (or less) driver changes many of us make. I used to change my irons every couple of years. I got fitted for a set of Miura’s 5 years ago and have no intention of switching anytime soon. Although the Miura’s are expensive, they turned out to be a great investment vs changing every few years. I applaud Titleist for their innovation. I bet some other companies follow, just like Nike did after the New Balance launch.

The New Balance 730s were worth the $100 to those of us who ran marathons back then. They had superior cushioning at the time that helped prevent injuries for those of us who had to run on cement and asphalt most of the time.

The irons are going to retail for around $2300. The head is a multi compound with forged, and cast iron and polymers. There are weights that are inserted into the shafts, one that goes low in the shaft and one up in the grip area. Shop near me received fitting heads last week and has already fit one customer for the irons. The head is as big as the AP1.

How many of us drive a Mercedes or BMW or Lexus instead of a Toyota Corolla? If it is a better tool, properly fitted, then if not for everyone, why not for some? Live and let live. I love my 915 D2 with kah’li blue board 60R. Just because I can’t afford it doesn’t mean I can’t respect the engineering – nor am I jealous of anyone who bags the new C16,

I wonder how someone enjoys spending(wasting) $1000 to go no farther than $200. Very strange logic to me. Maybe it’s to show off or brag but if a guy has one of those in his bag and I’m outdriving him with my considerably less expensive club, I’ll laugh all the way to the bank. Low handicapper or not, it’s ridiculous to spend that kind of cash on a golf club other than to have people think you’re something you’re not. I don’t need, nor would I want a Rolls Royce when my RAV4 gets me from point A to point B in the same amount of time and in relative comfort and, I enjoy that it didn’t cost me as much as the Rolls. It’s just a matter of perspective and perception I guess.

Golf is very meritocratic like that.

However…. In terms of the pleasure of owning and using nice well made things… If it’s not all about the score (which it isn’t for some of us), there is a case for these. Look much nicer than PXG imho.
