Going Toe-To-Toe With the Young Bucks!
Wilson Golf sits in this uniquely odd position in the golf industry. Their an old-timer from the standpoint of the brands age. But they also have to try and keep up with all the young bucks doing their best to try and run circles around the almost 100-year old golf company. Getting older sucks…but it is going to happen to all of us…just ask Shaq.
What Will Wilson Do?
So what do you think Wilson will do in their old-age? Think they will stick with what got them here or do you think they will try and conform with all the new trends while re-branding themselves all over again? Well…hard to say…but most of the companies that have completely refused to accept any of the new trends have been slowly led out to pasture and soon forgotten about. But in this case I think Wilson has a unique opportunity to capture a little bit of both worlds…which could lead to a huge strike of lighting in a bottle for the brand. Question is do they see this and if so will they capture it in time?
Impressed With Their Most Recent Iron Releases
Time will tell but some of the most recent iron releases would have you thinking that they are moving in the right direction. But then again some of their other product launches have me scratching my head thinking they couldn’t be farther from what I envision. They seem to be having an identity crisis of sorts.
Eh…what the hell do I know though.
I will say this the most recent forged irons from the brand have been everything I expected and much more. I feel if they simply continue to make clubs that the tour guys not only like but also win tournaments with…it won’t be long before they’re getting mentioned a whole lot more again.
Wilson FG Tour V2 Irons
And speaking of new forged Wilson irons…here is one of the newest models they are working on for release in the Fall. This one is called the Wilson FG Tour V2 iron. For more info on the irons be sure to read on below the spy images. And be sure to let the great group of guys over at Wilson know what you think about their newest stick and some of their past designs as well.
MORE INFO (FG TOUR V2 IRONS)
- The FG Tour V2 was designed as a follow-up to the successful FG Tour iron. Describe it as a more modern interpretation of a classic forged iron. Plan is to launch this iron this Fall with full availability targeted for Spring 2012.
- The intent of this club is to provide an iron solution to the Wilson Golf, PGA Tour Staff. Conversations with Kevin Streelman, Ricky Barnes and Padraig Harrington led to the creation of the V2 iron.
- Testing of this iron, as seen in the photos, began around the time of “The Players” Championship in Florida. Results were very positive with the PGA Tour players. The culmination is that Kevin Streelman had them in play for a Top-10 Finish at the Memorial last week.
- European Staff started formal testing last week
- The V2 is designed to have similar performance characteristics as the FG Tour iron. Some of the changes and updates are a softer leading edge, and an overall softer transition between the topline and the hosel. The general comments heard are that the head appears more compact with slightly less offset, compared to its predecessor.

I emailed Wilson’s customer service 8 days ago requesting the offset values…think they responded to me….NOPE! Want to compare the offset to 710 CB’s due to Golf Galaxy and Golfsmith not stocking these in New Jersey…so I cannot compare the 2 clubs.
